THINK IT’S HOT WHERE YOU ARE? IMAGINE LIVING IN THE BAKING HEAT HERE

For many Americans, the past month has been miserably hot.

Heat advisories and warnings have been issued from coast to coast, with high temperatures often reaching into the triple digits. More than 4,500 record highs have been set across the country in the past 30 days, according to the National Climatic Data Center.

But in certain parts of the world, this is the norm — or maybe even on the cool side.

Try Kuwait City, for instance. In July, its average high temperature is 116 degrees Fahrenheit.

Or Timbuktu in Mali, where the highs average 108 in May and was once recorded at 130. 130! That ranks fifth on the all-time list.

The highest temperature ever recorded on the planet was in 1922, when a thermometer in El Azizia, Libya, hit 136. Some dispute that mark, saying it was improperly measured. If that’s true, the record would be the 134, reached nine years earlier in Death Valley, California.

But the world’s hottest place might not be any of these, according to a team of scientists from the University of Montana. It says the highest temperatures on Earth are found in areas that don’t even have weather stations.

“The Earth’s hot deserts — such as the Sahara, the Gobi, the Sonoran and the Lut — are climatically harsh and so remote that access for routine measurements and maintenance of a weather station is impractical,” said David Mildrexler, lead author of a recent study that used NASA satellites to detect the Earth’s hottest surface temperatures.

The satellites detect the infrared energy emitted by land. And over a seven-year period, from 2003 to 2009, they found Iran’s Lut Desert to be the hottest place on Earth.

The Lut Desert had the highest recorded surface temperature in five of the seven years, topping out at 159 degrees in 2005. Other notable annual highs came from Queensland, Australia (156 degrees in 2003) and China’s Turpan Basin (152 degrees in 2008).

It’s important to stress that surface temperatures are naturally higher than the air temperatures measured by weather stations. Air temperatures have to be measured by thermometers placed off the ground and shielded from sunlight, according to global meteorological standards.

But the study shows that today’s modern records might not necessarily be the most accurate.

“Most of the places that call themselves the hottest on Earth are not even serious contenders,” co-author Steve Running said.

The world’s highest recorded air temperatures 1. El Azizia, Libya (136 degrees Fahrenheit) 2. Death Valley, California (134) 3. Ghadames, Libya (131) 3. Kebili, Tunisia (131) 5. Timbuktu, Mali (130) 5. Araouane, Mali (130) 7. Tirat Tsvi, Israel (129) 8. Ahwaz, Iran (128) 8. Agha Jari, Iran (128) 10. Wadi Halfa, Sudan (127)

Highest recorded air temperature (by continent) Africa: El Azizia, Libya (136) North America: Death Valley, California (134) Asia: Tirat Tsvi, Israel (129) Australia: Cloncurry, Queensland (128*) Europe: Seville, Spain (122) South America: Rivadavia, Argentina (120) Antarctica: Vanda Station, Scott Coast (59)

WHY DO SO MANY GREAT SPRINTERS LIKE USAIN BOLT COME FROM JAMAICA?

When the fastest men on the planet contest the Olympic 100 meters final in London on August 5, it will be a major upset if the winner does not come from the small Caribbean island of Jamaica.

Injuries or false starts aside, Usain Bolt will take center stage as he bids to retain the title he won in Beijing in 2008, but if he slips up then young pretender Yohan Blake is waiting in the wings, not to mention veteran former world record-holder Asafa Powell.

With such a pool of talent, 4x100m relay success is almost guaranteed, and Bolt is an even heavier favorite for 200m individual gold.

In the women’s events, Jamaican domination is also a common theme, with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce defending her 100m crown and Veronica Campbell-Brown going for a hat-trick of golds in the 200m.

Sprinters from the United States have won the majority of gold medals in the modern Olympic era and the likes of Tyson Gay will be keen to knock Bolt off the top of the podium in London.

But Gay represents a country with a population of over 300 million people with a massive tradition in track and field through the eras of stars such as Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis and Florence Griffith-Joyner.

So how is it that they are now largely second best to athletes from an impoverished island inhabited by fewer than three million people?

And it’s not only athletes who don the famous gold and green trim of Jamaica who have made their mark.

Olympic 100m champions Linford Christie (for Great Britain in 1992) and Donovan Bailey (for Canada in 1996) were born and bred in Jamaica, as was the now disgraced Ben Johnson, who also represented Canada.

So what is the secret of this remarkable Jamaican sprinting pedigree and will it continue into the future?

Role models

With role models like Bolt and Campbell-Brown, the conveyor belt of talent certainly shows no signs of slowing. The 22-year-old Blake, who won last year’s world championship 100m in Daegu when Bolt was disqualified in the final for false starting, is the latest to emerge.

Bolt himself drew inspiration from a former Jamaican great — Don Quarrie, who won the 1976 Olympic 200m title in Montreal and six Commonwealth Games gold medals.

“For me Don Quarrie was somebody to watch and to be amazed by,” Bolt told CNN’s Aiming for Gold program.

“That’s why I love the 200m so much because I’ve seen Don Quarrie and I said, ‘I can be that good.’ Quarrie, (Herb) McKenley, these are the guys that I looked up to.”

McKenley and Arthur Wint were the first Jamaicans to taste Olympic success, at the 1948 London Games.

The elegant Wint pipped McKenley for gold in the longer 400m sprint, while the latter achieved the rare feat of reaching the finals of the 100, 200 and 400m at the first post-war Olympics.

Of Jamaica’s current crop of women stars, Campbell-Brown was mentored by the great Merlene Ottey, who won a record 14 world championship medals for Jamaica in the sprint events and was still competing at international level for her adopted Slovenia past her 50th birthday. Now 52, Ottey still has hopes of qualifying for London 2012.

“She (Ottey) is a very positive person, very strong, very hard working, very passionate and she is a friend,” Campbell-Brown told CNN.

A hard school

Campbell-Brown went to the same high school in Jamaica as Ottey — Vere Technical — and both earned their trade in the ferociously competitive track and field schools competition on the island.

Bolt is convinced the key to Jamaican success is the intense rivalry of grassroots athletics from an early age.

AFRICAN CONSUMERS CONTINUE TO BE UNDERESTIMATED BY WESTERN FIRMS

Western companies operating in Africa have long underestimated the continent’s consumers, according to a top executive in one of the world’s biggest consumer goods groups.

Frank Braeken, executive vice president of Unilever in Africa, said that for a long time multinationals have thought of the vast continent as a “monolithic” market, failing to address its diversity.

“The African consumer has been underestimated, underserved and underserviced,” said Braeken. “What I mean is we have looked at it a little bit generically, like ‘the Africans,’ a little bit patronizing generically. Now we start to take the African consumer seriously.”

Unilever, the maker of brands such as Lipton and Knorr, has been active in the continent for more than a century, with a presence in 15 countries and employing thousands of workers there.

Yet, despite its long history and deep presence, Braeken acknowledged that the company had been slow in engaging with the diverse types of consumers in the continent.

“I’m almost somewhat ashamed to admit that we are still very much in learning mode about what the differences are within Africa.”

Braeken said that it was becoming increasingly clear that there were major differences between the different countries in the continent.

“What we now increasingly do is we think much more in terms of sub-clusters, where you have east Africa, where you have west Africa, where you have southern Africa,” he said.

MICHAEL PHELPS IS GOING FOR A WORLD RECORD OF 10 GOLD MEDALS

Michael Phelps may be looking to one-up himself.

The decorated swimmer has entered himself into seven individual events for the USA Olympic Swimming trials, and if he manages to qualify for all of them, and participates in all three team medleys, he could set himself up to take away 10 medals in this year’s London Olympics.

Perhaps Phelps is thinking there’s no other way to cap his record-setting eight medals in Beijing than to go for a few more.

And it may not be a bad way to cap off his record career. After all, Phelps said in a recent interview with 60 Minutes that he was going to retire after this year’s Olympics.

Of course, Phelps could also be keeping his options open. If he were to fail to qualify in one of the events, he’d have plenty of backups. And some swimmers often enter themselves into additional races only to scratch themselves from some events to focus on others. Phelps may be waiting to see what events he and his coach feel he is best suited for.

It wouldn’t be a first for him to scratch a few events. During the 2008 Olympic trials he scratched himself from three events.

Phelps has signed up for the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley, the 100-meter and 200-meter butterfly, the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle and the 200-meter backstroke during Olympics trials taking place on June 25 in Omaha, Nebraska, according to USA Swimming. Phelps is expected to be picked to be in all three men’s team relay events.

But he could also be preparing to dazzle a crowd that’s used to having all eyes on him in the swimming pool during recent Olympics.

He also brought in less than half of golfer Phil Mickelson’s $47.8m (£30.51m).

Woods had topped the Forbes list since 2001 but saw a drop in his earnings of $16m (£10.21m) from the previous year and was down by half from his peak in 2009.

He has suffered a tail off in endorsements since then as a result of being embroiled in a sex scandal.

Miami Heat star LeBron James ranks fourth at $53m (£33.84m), the highest of 13 basketball players and on the list. Swiss tennis star Roger Federer was fifth at $52.7m (£33.64m).

Real Madrid and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo earned $42.5m (£27.10m) and can lay claim to the top annual salary of any athlete in any league at $20m (£12.75m).

THE WORLD’S DUMBEST CRIMINALS ON FACEBOOK: PART I

An Englishman has been convicted after testifying his innocence in court, then coming home and posting “I think I get [sic] away with it” to Facebook.

Michael Ruse, 21, initially pled not guilty to assault charges involving a 45-year-old man in Hampshire, England.

But an anonymous person who’s Facebook friends with Ruse printed out the update and delivered it to the court, forcing Ruse to change his plea to guilty.

Afterward, Ruse updated his Facebook status to call the case’s judge, Ian Pearson, “stuck up.”

In his ruling, Pearson ripped into Ruse. He said, “[Y]ou were stupid enough to put on Facebook what amounted to a full confession” and “your stupidity really is not much mitigation.”

Pearson sentenced Ruse to 46 weeks in prison, plus by six months of strict curfew.

During the trial, Ruse’s lawyer admitted his client “needs help with regards to thinking skills.”

And maybe a copy of Facebook for Dummies.

There is buzz all over the web and in entertainment outlets that Jennifer Lopez may be leaving American Idol. J Lo just topped Forbes magazine’s top 100 entertainment list and much of her comeback can be credited to American Idol. Sources from J Lo and American Idol are mum on the matter.

It is said that Jennifer does not have time for the show anymore because she has a world tour coming up and she would like to spend more time with her kids.

Is this a ploy for a big pay day…..hmmmm

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Yesterday, Sunday, was a very relaxing day. I started the day by writing a blog about what people like to do on Sunday. I wrote the blog because I often wonder what other people are doing at the same time that I am. It became an interesting post to many people because they don’t care what others are doing. Most people only care about themselves and what they are doing. And therein lies the problem and brings us to the topic of my post today. Just because we are blind to other people’s existence does not mean they do  not exist. Ignorance is not bliss!! Jeff Van Gundy, ignorance is not bliss!!!

I was watching the recently masked Kobe Bryant and Ron Atest…Metta World Peace, tear into Dwayne Wade and the Miami Heat yesterday evening and had an ahaaa moment.  While the game was going on, I kept hearing World Peace does this and World Peace does that. That was when it struck me. At that moment, it all made sense.

When I first heard that Ron Artest had changed his name to Metta World Peace, my first thought that he had lost his mind, once again. Ron Artest was known in past for his erratic behaviour and violent outbursts. He was the guy that started the infamous Pacers-Detroit fight several. During the game, he was hit by a water bottle which was thrown onto the court from the stands. Ron Artest responded by running into the stands an attacking the wrong fan. A huge melee ensued. The fight spilled out onto the court and got several players suspended for an insane number of games. He was also the guy who while still in the NBA applied for a job in the mall. Therefore, when I heard that he had changed his name to Metta World Peace, I couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow.

Last night however, it all made sense. Every time his name was mentioned, it was a chance for millions of people who tuned in to watch the game, to hear something positive. It gave them a break from hearing about all the rapes, murders, wars going on all around them. It gave World Peace a chance. I wondered what the word Metta meant and upon looking it up, I found out that Metta is a traditional Buddhist word that means loving and kindness toward all. “Changing my name was meant to inspire and bring youth together all around the world,” said World Peace in a statement. Yes, I called him World Peace. That is his name. Several people had a problem when Cassius Clay changed his name to Muhammad Ali. When a man tells you what his name, respect him and call him by his name, especially if the name symbolizes positivity.

Former New York Knick coach Jeff Van Gundy laughed whenever he said the name Metta World Peace because it probably made him uncomfortable. He then followed that up with one of the most ignorant statements I had heard in quite some time. His co-announcer said that Metta changed his name to help make kids think more positively and to help reduce gang violence. Van Gundy mocked this comment with laughter, saying that a name change inspires nothing. This is because most english names have no meaning. Jeff, just because your name means nothing does not mean that others names should mean nothing as well.

When children are named in Nigeria or in Africa as a whole, the names mean something. Your name fore-shadows your life, so to speak. No one ever gives a child a name which has negative connotations attached to it. That negativity follows that child wherever throughout their lives. I’ve heard of children being named Pandora here in the United States. In Greek mythology, Pandora’s box was actually a large jar given to Pandora which contained all the evils of the world. Today, to open Pandora’s box means to create evil that cannot be undone. This would have never happened in African culture.

I have a message to Jeff Van Gundy – Just because you don’t understand how gang violence has ravaged the black community and the need to fight it in any way we can, is not a reason for you to mock someone trying to do something positive. If you don’t understand a person’s behaviour, instead of laughing at it or mocking it, take some time out and dig a bit deeper. Get to know them a little bit more, especially if their performance on the court pays your bills.

“I think I accomplished a lot already,” World Peace said. “First I accomplished a lot with the mental health, changed lives. And people I don’t even know, I’ve probably changed a lot of lives, too.”

THE US WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM DEFEATS BRAZIL!!

Wow!! What a game. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire game. Both teams played a great game. This match truly proves that preparation for every phase of the game will defeat pure skill every single time. The US Women’e soccer team clearly was on a different level conditioning and fitness-wise. One of the US Women pulled up her Jersey to wipe the sweat from her face and I could see that she had a heart rate monitor on. The US team monitors the conditioning of it’s players even during the World cup. The team then goes back and works on ways to get better. It was clear also that the US team practices every phase of the game including penalty kicks. None of them looked nervous. They were all so relaxed because they had practiced it so much and it had become second nature.

Hope Solo in a post By Ngo Okafor

Hope Solo in a post By Ngo Okafor

The Brazil Women’s soccer team was amazing, skill-wise. Marta is in a world of her own. So gifted. She has such great control of her body and the ball. Unfortunately, as time went on, it was clear that Brazil could not match the fitness of the US Women. Their mouths were open and they were all hunched over. They did every thing they could to kill time, but they didn’t have the energy and fortitude to finish the game.

Conditioning is everything. It is very evident in my sport of boxing. Say what you may about Floyd Mayweather, but no one, drug free, can match his strength and conditioning. His knowledge of his superior gives him such confidence when he is the ring. That is part of what makes watching him so amazing to people who understand this and boring to those who just don’t get it.

The jury is in!! If you want an edge, get your fitness level up!! Congrats to the US Women’s Soccer team on their awe inspiring win over Brazil.
