LOSE WEIGHT WITH HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING

Push your muscles harder: Using heavier weights, in reducing the amount rest between sets,  may help you blast more fat, according to new research in the Journal of Translational Medicine.

In the study, scientists had two groups of trained lifters do different workouts. One group performed four sets of 8 to 12 reps of these 8 exercises: 1. Bench press 2. Machine row 3. Military press 4. Biceps curl 5. Triceps extension 6. Leg press 7. Leg curl 8. Situp

They did the exercises in straight sets—a traditional method—completing all four sets of the first exercise before moving on to the next. They rested for 2 minutes after each set of the compound exercises, but just 1 minute after the biceps curl, triceps extension, leg curl, and situp. They lifted to failure in each set.

The second group of men used used a “rest-pause” technique and did just three exercises: 1. Leg press 2. Bench press 3. Machine row

For each exercise, they chose the heaviest weight they could lift six times. (Their six-rep max.) Then they performed six reps. As soon as they were done, they rested 20 seconds, and using the same weight, immediately did as many reps as they could—usually two to three more. Then they rested another 20 seconds, and did as many reps as they could again. After the third series, they rested for 2 minutes and 30 seconds. That counted as one total set. They did three of these sets of the leg press, and then did two sets of the bench press followed by two sets of the machine row.

This created a workout that used heavy weights to “induce mechanical effects on the muscles,” while the short 20-second recovery periods gave it an effect “comparable to high intensity endurance training,” say the study authors. (Note: The rest-pause technique has been around for years, but hasn’t been studied for its benefits as a potential fat-loss protocol.)

Twenty-two hours later, the rest-pause group had a resting metabolism that was 452 calories higher than it was before their workout; the other group saw an increase of just 98 calories. This is despite the fact that the rest-pause lifters exercised for just half the time as the conventional lifters.

The reason: When your muscles work harder, they have to do more post-workout rebuilding. That burns calories and lifts levels of metabolism-boosting hormones, says study author Antonio Paoli, M.D., of the Università degli Studi di Padova in Italy.

One caveat: The researchers didn’t measure energy expenditure during the workouts. And given that the traditional-lifting group did a significantly higher volume of work, it’s likely they burned a greater number of calories in their actual training session than did the rest-pause group.

FOR POWER OUTPUT, TECHNIQUE WILL DESTROY SIZE ANY DAY!

While I was sweating my butt off in a spin class at Fly Wheel Sports in NYC on Saturday, I looked up at the screen and saw that a girl in the class was pushing her power output dangerously close to my max power output. I couldn’t allow that to happen because men have more muscle and are generally heavier and stronger than women, so men should produce more power….right??……WRONG!!!

I was chatting with a male trainer at Peak Performance and he believes that group fitness classes should utilize heart-rate monitors in order to make sure that participants in the classes are working hard. I told him that each bike at Flywheel has a digital display which measures the total power output acheived by each participant in the class. The digital meter pushes everyone in the class to work hard to improve their final power output number. The male trainer countered this point by saying that men and heavier people are supposed to generate more power.

I contemplated this conversation for a quite a while. I later attended the Peak Performance Trainers’ and family party at a Bowling alley in NYC,  where the trainer’s point was put to the test. At the Bowling party, I created a different kind of competition. Once I discovered that the speed of the bowling ball could be measured, it was on!!! The competition shifted from hitting pins, making strikes and spares, to who could throw the bowling ball the fastest. It was so much fun!!!

But, back to the point at hand. The trainer, with whom I had the power conversation, got in on the competition and so did the biggest trainer at the gym (Peak Performance NYC). The trainer in question weighed about 175 lbs and the biggest trainer weighed about 245lbs. At the end of the competition, the 175lb trainer was able to throw the bowling ball faster than the 245lb trainer. Even though there was an astounding 70lb difference between the two guys, the lighter trainer was able to generate more power becasue he had better technique.

I believe that technique will destroy size any day. What are thoughts on this conversation? Feel free to share your ideas and thoughts here or on Facebook.

EIGHT AIR MARSHALS FIRED FOR DRINKING AT LUNCH DURING TRAINING

Eight federal air marshals are being fired for drinking alcohol during training, and six others are being disciplined for not reporting it, according to the Transportation Security Administration.

The marshals, who typically fly with guns to protect commercial flights, were in New York in February for training and were not scheduled to fly that day.

The group, which included one supervisor, went to lunch at a restaurant, where eight drank alcohol, TSA spokesman David Castelveter said.

Some of the marshals had their weapons with them at the time.

The incident was reported to an internal federal air marshal website by a marshal who was there, and the TSA launched an internal investigation, Castelveter explained.

Under employment rules, seven of the agents will have a chance to appeal their terminations. One of the agents had recently been hired and was still on probationary status and so was fired immediately.

“TSA holds all of its employees to the highest professional and ethical standards and has zero tolerance for misconduct in the workplace,” Castelveter said in a statement. “TSA’s decision to remove the individuals involved in the misconduct affirms our strong commitment to the highest standards of conduct and accountability.”

WHY WRESTLING IS BOOMING IN SENEGAL

Dakar, Senegal (CNN) — In most of Africa, football reigns supreme among sports, but in Senegal wrestling challenges it for popularity. It provides entertainment and exercise, and offers young men dreams of fame and fortune.

Wrestling’s popularity in Senegal makes it big business. For the sport’s superstars the rewards can be huge, with the biggest names earning up to $200,000 per contest. In a country where unemployment is pushing 50%, some young men see it as a way out of poverty.

Gris Bordeaux is a star in Senegal, a wrestling champion who also teaches at a wrestling school in the capital Dakar.

He says wrestling is a mental, as well as physical, discipline and that reaching the top of his profession takes dedication.

“It’s all about making sacrifices,” says Bordeaux. “It requires training and meditation; your mindset is important. You have to educate yourself well.

“Not all wrestlers get to realize their dreams, because on the bigger level it is few that get to where I am. You need to be focused on the sport — like over 5,000 wrestlers you will get only 10 that make it.”

Bordeaux credits wrestling with changing his life, bringing him success and wealth.

“What I do know is that it has given me a lot of opportunities,” he says. “It has opened doors for me because I am able to take care of myself and my family and especially to help the young people in the community.”

It’s perhaps a desire to emulate the likes of Bordeaux — as well as a desire to keep fit — that motivates young Senegalese men to work out on the beaches of Dakar.

Lacking the money to use a proper gym, some men have built a makeshift gym of their own. On the city’s public beaches they have set up workout benches, using whatever materials they can — be it car tires or wheel rims loaded with rocks to make them heavier.

Some of those training at Bordeaux’s school and pumping iron on the beach may one day make it onto the professional wrestling circuit, earning the right to wear the wrestler’s traditional pre-fight regalia.

Bordeaux describes the costumes as art. He says: “The way we dress is to show harmony — we dress for the fight and we become different. When we wear the full attire for a fight, you won’t recognize me!”
