HOW TO GET SEXY MALE MODEL ABS

Ngo okafor Black male model abs

If you treat your abs like an after thought, they will look like an after thought.

Good morning all!! It’s Sunday morning, which means that another week has come to an end and another week is set begin in a few hours. Sunday is a great day to reflect on the week past and plan/get ready for the new week. My Sundays are usually spent researching ideas and articles on varying subject matters and then write about them. Today I’m going to write about how to get sexy male model abs. I don’t have to research this topic because I live it….everyday.

Abs are the key to being successful as a model. It is especially important for someone who has a desire to become a fitness model. Abs are the ultimate measure of fitness. Ripped abs shows that you have put in the work in the gym and you have discipline to eat healthy in order to get lean. In order words, it means that you are in beast mode!!

When you walk to into a modeling agency, seeking to become a fitness model, the first thing the agent will ask is for you to take off your shirt. This request is not personal. They are not trying to put you down. The truth is that if you do not have ripped, sexy abs, you cannot work as fitness model. PERIOD!!!

In this blog post today, I will share how I got my abs to become more muscular and ripped. Contrary to what many people may say, you have to treat your abs just as you would treat any other muscle in your body. You have treat your ab muscles just as you would your chest, biceps or triceps. You have to work them hard. Many people do not train their abs until the end of their workouts and then they wonder why their abs do not grow and get ripped. If you treat your abs like an after thought, they will look like an after thought.

I will share one example of my workouts in this blog today. This way, you will get a chance to try this routine without getting overwhelmed by information. When you have tried it, please write back and let me know how you fared with it. I will share more workouts shortly, so stay tuned.

No matter what movement or body part(s) that I’m working on for each day, I begin every workout by doing 20-30 minutes of cardiovascular activity on a treadmill, bike or jumping rope. I then move on to abs, before lifting any weights. To start, I do side planks for 45 seconds on each side and then I do 60 seconds in a regular plank position. After this, I move over and do the weighted rope crunches-leg raises combination. This means that I will do a set of weighted rope crunches and then go over and do a set of leg raises, without resting. The rope crunches work the muscles in the mid to upper region of the abs and leg raises work the lower region of the abs. See the pictures of the exercises below. My goal for working my abs in this routine is to get my ab muscles stronger and make them more dense by using heavy weight on the rope crunches. I would not suggest using heavy weights on leg raises because the lower ab region is weak on most people and may cause abdominal or lower back injury.

The workout is as follows:

Weighted Cable Crunches:

1 Warm up set followed by 4 Sets of 8-10 reps

Leg raises on an incline bench:

1 warm set followed by 4 sets of 10-15 reps

Stretch out your abs and then move on to your movement/body part lift for the day. ENJOY!!!

HOW TO REACH YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS GOALS FOR 2013

Happy New Year 2013

5…4…3…2…1…HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Oh yes, for anyone that has been living under a rock, a new year was ushered in less than 72 hours ago. We are now in 2013. A new year means new opportunity. New opportunities to better our financial lives, health and relationships; both personal business. We make new year’s resolutions to help us better ourselves. This is great, but it is nearly impossible to become successful with our resolution goals without a plan of action. We wait and hope, but get no closer to our dreams.

I have come up with 10 steps to help all of us, reach our goals in 2013.

1. Clarity of purpose. For a dream to become a goal, it must be specific. While it’s fun to dream about being rich, it takes courage and hard choices to decide exactly how much money you want and how you are going to earn it. Being “thin” is an image; losing 23 pounds by your birthday is a goal. In life, we probably can’t have it all. You can lose 23 pounds, or you can have the cake and ice cream. Your choice. Be clear.

2. Commitment. There’s a story from ancient Greece about a general who landed his troups on the beach, then burned his ships. He wanted each soldier to know there was no turning back, no retreat, no alternative to victory. Once your goal is clear, emotionally commit to achieving it. There are no alternatives.

3. Talk about it. This is called “accountability.” Once you’ve defined your goal and committed yourself to achieve it, start talking about it! If you want to lose weight, don’t blame your spouse for buying ice cream if he or she does’t know and understand your goal! Talking about your goals makes them emotionally real and powerful. It allows people to help you reach your goal and support you along the way. Some people will also criticize or undermine you. Don’t talk to them.

4. Write it down. This is basic, and one of the oldest, simplest and most powerful techniques for achieving any goal. Write it down! Describe precisely what you want, how you will earn it, when you will have it and the benefits you’ll receive from achieving your goal. Write the details. Write the colors, the shapes and the dates.

5. Repeat it every day! Every morning, use a small card or a corner of your appointment book to record a short description of your goal where you will see it all day long. Don’t carry the same card day after day! If your goal is worth anything, it’s worth one minute of your time to write a simple sentence describing your dream and focusing on your priorities. Do this every morning.

6. Have a plan. Create a map for getting there. And put dates on it! A goal to retire at age 40 has no meaning without a savings and investment strategy. A goal to create your own business is just a fantasy without a plan to attract investors, find a location, hire staff and sell your goods or services. The beauty of a plan is that it shows you a path to your goal.

7. Take action every day! “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Any goal that is worthy of you is worth a few minutes of your time and some of your energy every single day. To write a novel, write a chapter this week. To open your own business, read a business magazine today. To create a more loving family, give someone a hug today. To be salesperson of the year, make a phone call right now!

8. Use constant affirmations. One of my clients is a PGA golfer. From the moment his ball lands on the green until he sinks the putt, he repeats over and over “I will make this putt!” He repeats that phrase as many as 200 times before every putt! Do you think he would be more, or less, successful if he spent those moments thinking, “I just hope I don’t miss it”? Tell yourself what you want to hear!

9. Review, and re-commit, often. Never be afraid to review your goals, evaluate whether you are still 100% committed to them, and re-commit to achieving them. If your values or your choices have changed, change your goals accordingly, and be honest about it! And if your goal still fits, run to it with all your heart!

10. Celebrate each milestone! Never wait to have a party! Each deposit in your savings account deserves a checkmark on the calendar and a hug from your partner. Each day without a cigarette deserves a smile and congratulations from your loved ones. Every step toward your goal should be documented and celebrated! When you get discouraged or have doubts, your record of past successes will quickly get you back on track. Not sure about this? Ask any marathon runner whether they count each mile on their run to the finish line! Celebrate each and every milepost on your path to victory!

BEST TIME TO EAT FOR WEIGHT LOSS

Certainly, what we eat has an enormous impact on our health and weight status.  But did you know that when and how we eat also make a huge difference? Eating at  the appropriate times throughout the day will help to maximize fat burning and  keep hunger at bay.

Aim to eat every 3 to 4 hours. Most people eat three meals and one  snack, while others may prefer four smaller meals; you’re free to find the  combination that works best for you. Timing your meals in this way will improve  your fat loss by preventing excess insulin, allowing leptin to work its magic on  appetite control and metabolism, and by balancing the stress hormone cortisol.  You should also enjoy your meals at the same time every day.

Eat within 1 hour of rising. Your mom was also right when she told you  breakfast was the most important meal of the day. When you skip breakfast, you  lose its stimulating benefits on your metabolic rate. You also become more  likely to eat unbalanced meals, more calories, and larger amounts of saturated  fat throughout the day. Plenty of research shows that those of us who skip  breakfast are actually heavier. Missing out on a healthy morning meal also  increases stress hormones.

Never eat within 3 hours of bedtime. Eating too close to bedtime  raises your body temperature, increases blood sugar and insulin, prevents the  release of melatonin, and cuts down on growth hormone release. All these factors  interfere with the quality of your sleep and the natural fat-burning benefits of  a good night’s rest. Furthermore, sleep deprivation leads to more cravings and a  greater likelihood of overeating the next day.

If you must eat before bed, opt for a light meal or snack that’s high in  protein and low in carbohydrates and fat, such as a protein shake made with  berries and water, salad with grilled chicken, or a shrimp and veggie  stir-fry.

Start the day with protein. For better appetite control throughout the  day, try combining your starchy carbs at lunch, dinner, or after your workouts  rather than at breakfast. Stick to eggs or whey protein smoothies for breakfast  and you’ll eat less throughout the day.

Always eat within 45 minutes of finishing your workout. This meal or  snack is the only one of the day that should not contain much fat and should be  higher in carbohydrates. For example, have a smoothie made with juice, fruit,  and protein powder, but no flaxseeds or oil.

Never do your weight training on an empty stomach. You will need  energy from your foods to perform optimally. You may, however, complete your  cardio before eating if your session will be less than 30 minutes.

Focus on your food. Do not eat while you are doing anything else  (i.e., watching TV, working, surfing on the computer, etc.). Focus on chewing  your food and relaxing while you eat.

Eat protein first. Eat the protein on your plate first to help speed  the signal to your brain that you are full.

Drink alcohol last. If you have alcohol or wine, do so after your meal  to enhance the hormones involved in appetite control and digestion.

CHURCH REFUSES TO MARRY BLACK COUPLE, CHARLES AND TE’ANDREA WILSON, IN MISSISSIPPI

WLBT.com – Jackson, MS

Hurt. Devastated. Crushed.

Those are words an African-American couple used to describe how they felt when they were forced to change the venue of their wedding because of their race.

“Because of the fact that we were black, some of the members of the congregation had got upset and decided that no black couple would ever be married at that church,” Charles Wilson told CNN on Sunday night.

“All we wanted to do in the eyes of God was to be man and wife in a church that we thought we felt loved. What was wrong with that?”

Charles and Te’Andrea Wilson had planned to marry this month at the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs in Mississippi, but were asked at the last minute to move.

Their pastor, Stan Weatherford, made the request on behalf of some congregants who didn’t want to see the couple married there, according to CNN affiliate WLBT. He performed the ceremony at a nearby church.

“This was, had not, had never been done here before so it was setting a new (precedent) and there were those who reacted to that,” Weatherford told WLBT.

“I didn’t want to have a controversy within the church, and I didn’t want a controversy to affect the wedding of Charles and Te’ Andrea. I wanted to make sure their wedding day was a special day,” he reportedly said.

On Sunday, some church members reacted to news of the wedding with surprise, many hadn’t known what happened to the Wilsons until they heard about it on the news, and offered apologies.

“I would say I’m sorry this happened and would you forgive the people who caused it? Because we’re gonna try to,” Bob Mack told WLBT.

Talking about the group that opposed the wedding he said: “We hope we can straighten them out, you know, get them to understand what Christianity is all about because they have some misconceptions about it.”

But for Charles and Te’Andrea Wilson, support from the church now might be too little, too late.

“I had dreams of having my wedding the way I wanted it, and I also dreamed of having it at the church and unfortunately, it didn’t happen,” Te’Andrea Wilson told CNN.

Her husband said if there was a time to “step up and be Christ-like,” it was before their wedding. Hindsight is 20/20.

“If it was such a minority of people, why didn’t the majority stand up and say, ‘in God’s house we don’t do this?’” said Charles Wilson.

MANNY PACQUAIO: GOD TOLD ME TO RETIRE…BUT NOT YET

This kind of statement will not make any promoter or any investor or endorser feel good about an athlete. Statements such as this will make promoters such as Bob Aram and endorsers like Nike rethink their position on backing Manny Pacquaio. I believe that this was the reason why Timothy Bradley was granted the win in his bout with former champion Manny Pacquaio. The problem here is that it does not make business sense to back an athlete whose decision to go on or retire is based on “what God tells him”. Like St. Augustine’s prayer “God make me chaste – but not yet,” Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao’s personal conversation with God may not lead to his retirement anytime soon.

Pacquiao said in a radio interview on Monday he had a dream in which God had told him to hang up his gloves, fueling speculation he may back out of a long-anticipated fight with American Floyd Mayweather.

“I will not stay long in boxing because He said: ‘You have done enough. You have made yourself famous but this is harmful’,” he told Manila’s DZMM radio.

However, his team say retirement is still a long way off.

“A few years ago the pressure for him to retire was coming from his mother,” Pacquiao’s business manager Eric Pineda told CNN. “But recently he dreamt that God told him to retire but there’s nothing definite about his retirement either this year or next year.

“This year it’s out of the question,” Pineda said. “And I’m not even sure about next year either.”

He said a Mayweather fight would be up to the Mayweather camp, but that Pacquiao was more than ready to meet him in the ring.

“Manny is a fighter and there is still the desire,” Pineda said. “He really wants this thing with Mayweather to happen.

“He doesn’t want to retire leaving unanswered questions.”

Pacquiao, 33, has a 54-3 win-loss record with two draws and plans to pit his World Boxing Organization welterweight crown against undefeated American Timothy Bradley in Las Vegas on June 9.

Boxing fans have long sought a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao. The pair were in negotiations for a fight to be held later this year but talks fell through. The 34-year-old American boxer has won all 42 of his professional fights, 26 by knockout.

Manny is a fighter and there is still the desire eric pineda

“People are clamoring for this fight — and it will probably be bigger than the Ali/Frazier fight. Manny still wants to prove to himself that he can beat Mayweather,” Pineda added.

Pacquiao also has an ongoing defamation suit against Mayweather, claiming the American fighter has insinuated that his success is the result of performance-enhancing drugs.

Pacquiao is the first boxer in the sport’s history to have won world titles in eight weight divisions and recently launched a successful political career after being elected to the Philippine House of Representatives in June 2010.

Formerly a heavy gambler and late-night party-goer, Philippines media reported in February that Pacquiao had renewed his commitment to his faith, shutting down a restaurant and bar he owned, selling shares in a casino and nightclub and selling his cockfighting gamecocks.

IT’S HOT AS HELL OUTSIDE: 8 TIPS TO BEAT THE HEAT

Hundreds of record high temperatures have baked the United States this week. On Wednesday this massive heat wave pushes east! Temperatures will reach dangerous levels in cities such as Chicago, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Houston, Philadelphia and many more.

Look for highs to climb into the mid- to upper 90s and even triple digits. Plus, there’s still no relief for the scorching West and Plains states. With this dangerous heat in the forecast, here are some safety tips from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to keep cool:

  • Slow down. Reduce, eliminate or reschedule strenuous activities until the coolest time of the day. Children, seniors and anyone with health problems should stay in the coolest available place, not necessarily indoors.
  • Dress for summer. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing to reflect heat and sunlight.
  • Put less fuel on your inner fires. Foods, like meat and other proteins that increase metabolic heat production, also increase water loss.
  • Drink plenty of water, non-alcoholic and decaffeinated fluids. Your body needs water to keep cool. Drink plenty of fluids even if you don’t feel thirsty. Persons who have epilepsy or heart, kidney or liver disease, are on fluid-restrictive diets or have a problem with fluid retention should consult a physician before increasing their consumption of fluids.
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages and limit caffeinated beverages.
  • During excessive heat periods, spend more time in air-conditioned places. Air conditioning in homes and other buildings markedly reduces danger from the heat. If you cannot afford an air conditioner, go to a library, store or other location with air conditioning for part of the day.
  • Don’t get too much sun. Sunburn reduces your body’s ability to dissipate heat.
  • Do not take salt tablets unless specified by a physician.

Remember those over age 65, children, and those with chronic medical conditions are more susceptible to heat-related illness. The best place to be during extreme heat is in an air-conditioned place indoors. Public libraries, shopping malls and public cooling areas are free places to go if you do not have air-conditioning at home.

AND YET THEY CALL AFRICANS BARBARIC? INDIAN FATHER ACCUSED OF KILLING BABY FOR BEING A GIRL

You hear stories like this from around the world and yet we, Africans, are the ones being called barbaric? I don’t think so. If you think your life is hard, imagine if you were never given the chance to begin your life. This is the most dangerous place to be born a girl.

Nineteen-year-old Reshma Banu sits on the stairs outside her parents’ home, staring at the tiny screen on her cell phone. The video on the screen has her mesmerized: a very short home video of her baby girl, Afreen. The moments captured are precious because they show Banu’s only child alive and well.  Afreen died in the hospital. She was three months old.

Authorities say the baby was admitted to the hospital with bite marks, cigarette burns and a dislocated neck. Police say she was killed by her father.

“After my delivery my husband had come to see me and the baby. He said, ‘It is a girl, why did you give birth to a girl?’”

He wanted a boy, an heir. Girls were too expensive, he said. A couple of days after giving birth, Banu says her husband gave an ultimatum.

“For her wedding we will require a hundred thousand rupees (about US$1,800 dollars) for all the expense. If you can get that amount from your mother, then keep her, but if you can’t, then kill her,” Banu recalled her husband as saying.

She didn’t believe he meant it and was sure he would change his mind once he held his soft, bright-eyed baby girl.

Three months later, her baby is dead, and her husband is under arrest, accused of beating the baby to death. Police say he confessed to the killing.

This is by no means the first case of its kind in India. Attitudes, traditions, and economics have come together to make being a girl a dangerous prospect in the country, doctors say. Most of the time girls are disposed of long before they are born.

How? Sex-selective abortions.

India has a growing gender gap: The 2011 census showed that for every 1,000 boys six years or younger there were only 914 girls. It is the lowest child sex ratio since India’s independence in 1947.

The United Nations has said India is the most dangerous place to be a girl. Dr. Anand Krishnan at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), who has studied the gender gap for years, agrees.

“Yes, largely this is from the point of view of mortality statistics for girls versus boys,” Krishnan told CNN.

Sex-selective abortions are against the law in India but are still happening at an alarming rate, he said.

His study shows a surprising trend: Sex selective abortions among the educated and well-off seem to be more prevalent than among the desperately poor and uneducated. Despite greater prosperity, their mindsets have not changed and they have the money to pay for ultrasounds and abortions.

“A boy is seen as a better investment. They prefer boys,” Krishnan said.

The explanation goes something like this: In traditional Indian families the men marry and bring their bride home to live and take care of his parents.

Girls, on the other hand, marry and leave the home without providing extra financial support.

Moreover, a girl’s family can go broke trying to pay a dowry to get her married. Although outlawed in India, dowries are still common and take different forms throughout society.

Indian law also forbids doctors to tell a couple the sex of their child after an ultrasound, but many clinics break the law and do so anyway.

India has made an effort across the country to stop female infanticide.

CNN visited a village in Haryana state with one of the worst ratios of boys to girls, according to the Indian government. A campaign is under way to change villagers’ minds about girls.

Tiny placards above the doors of several homes say in Hindi: “If you get rid of your girls, where will you find your daughter-in-laws?”

A teenage boy wore a T-shirt that said, “Save our girls.”

Nonetheless, there were young boys everywhere and only a few young girls. Villagers only affirmed why there appeared to be an imbalance.

She had just come into the world. She was like a flower bud, and he killed her. I lost my daughter. What can be worse than this?
Reshma Banu

“Girls are mostly aborted here. The people want more boys. There is a shortage of girls,” Chandravati said without hesitation.

DO YOUR KIDS A FAVOR, LET THEM KNOW WHEN THEY SUCK!!!

Editor’s note: LZ Granderson, who writes a weekly column for CNN.com, He is a senior writer and columnist for ESPN the Magazine and ESPN.com. He wrote this article. Read below:

When my son was in middle school, I remember attending one of his school band concerts that wasn’t very good.

In fact, it sucked.

At times, it sounded as if half the band was playing one song and the other half was playing something totally different. And because I don’t want my son to grow up to be a loser, I told him straight out what I thought.

“How was it?” he asked.

It was pretty bad,” I said.

“I know, right?” my son agreed, smiling. “We’re not good at all.”

And then we both laughed until we had tears in our eyes.

I don’t claim to know everything about parenting, but I do know parents do their children a disservice by constantly sugarcoating their shortcomings to protect their feelings. I can’t think of a more surefire way to raise a loser than not allowing a child to learn what it really takes to be a winner.

Not that everything in life is a competition. But if children can’t handle competition when it’s necessary, or take some criticism, or never strive to be better because their parents inadvertently programmed them to believe they are already the best even when they’re not, then they are in for some serious shocks and bumps down the road.

That’s the part of the discussion that’s missing from all the chatter about David McCullough Jr.’s controversial “You Are Not Special” commencement speech. He didn’t call the Wellesley High School Class of 2012 a bunch of lowlifes who won’t amount to anything. Rather, he was adjusting their lenses so that they could see the world they were about to enter more clearly.

“Across the country no fewer than 3.2 million seniors are graduating about now from more than 37,000 high schools,” McCullough said. “That’s 37,000 valedictorians… 37,000 class presidents… 92,000 harmonizing altos… 340,000 swaggering jocks … 2,185,967 pairs of Uggs. But why limit ourselves to high school? After all, you’re leaving it. So think about this: Even if you’re one in a million, on a planet of 6.8 billion that means there are nearly 7,000 people just like you.”

One man’s “ouch” is another man’s “right on brother,” and you can count me among the latter.

My son is special … to me.

He is special to his mother, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends.

But he is not special to everyone, and he is not great at everything. None of us are.

If the students at Wellesley didn’t know this before their last moments of high school, I am glad McCullough was there to help them out before life taught them that lesson in less forgiving ways.

Some folks have faulted McCullough, an English teacher at Wellesley, for his tough words. Sure, the job of high school teachers is not to tear down students’ self-esteem. But it’s certainly not to inflate students’ sense of self-worth with a bunch of unearned compliments and half-truths.

There is a middle ground where “how things are” and “how things can be” meets. It is at this middle point where growth happens. But if parents, teachers and the other adults in a child’s life never acknowledge “how things are” — no matter how good the intention may be — then they are denying that child an opportunity to mature, to develop a strong sense of self-confidence that can only be earned by recognizing shortcomings and dealing with disappointments and failures.

“And I hope you caught me when I said ‘one of the best,’ ” McCullough said. “I said ‘one of the best’ so we can feel better about ourselves, so we can bask in a little easy distinction, however vague and unverifiable, and count ourselves among the elite, whoever they might be, and enjoy a perceived leg up on the perceived competition. But the phrase defies logic. By definition there can be only one best. You’re it or you’re not.”

Which is why McCullough also talked about the importance of pursuing passions for the sake of passions, rather than seeking accolades or striking off items from an arbitrary checklist. Accolades and lists may tell us about accomplishments, but life is meant to be experienced, not just accomplished. It’s like the difference between reading books for the sake of reading and reading books just to get a good grade. Tell me, once you’re done with school, are you then supposed to be done with reading books? I sure hope not.

McCullough’s point was that students should focus less on being seen as special and instead understand that living life is special in and of itself. As Rudyard Kipling so eloquently stated in his poem “If”:

If you can dream — and not make dreams your master; If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with triumph and disaster And treat those two imposters just the same;

The synopsis of “You Are Not Special” may seem scathing, but I found the speech to be quite uplifting, and I shared it with my son. He has another three years to go before graduating from high school, but I always like to remind him that his family and friends think the world of him — and for the most part, just about everyone else on this planet doesn’t give a damn about him. That’s not mean or cruel, good or bad, that’s just the reality of life. And that’s OK — everyone is special to someone, but no one is special to all.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR MIND TO REMEMBER ANYTHING

Once upon a time, the idea of having a trained, disciplined, cultivated memory was not nearly so strange a notion as it might seem to be today. People invested in their memories, in laboriously furnishing their minds.

Over the last few millennia, we’ve invented a series of technologies — from the alphabet to the printed book to the photograph to the iPhone — that have made it easier and easier for us to externalize our memories and essentially outsource this fundamental human capacity.

These technologies have made our modern world possible, but they’ve also changed us. They’ve changed us culturally, and I would argue that they’ve changed us cognitively. Having little need to remember anymore, it sometimes seems as if we’ve forgotten how.

One of the last places where you still find people passionate about the idea of a disciplined, cultivated memory is a strange contest held each spring in New York called the USA Memory Championship. Contestants compete to see who can memorize the most lines of poetry, the most names of strangers, even the most random digits in five minutes.

The sport of competitive memorizing is driven by a kind of arms race. Each year someone comes up with a new technique to remember more stuff more quickly, forcing the rest of the field to play catch up.

Three-time World Memory Champion Ben Pridmore invented a memory system, which he alone has mastered, that allowed him to memorize the precise order of 28 shuffled packs of playing cards in one hour. He used a similar trick to memorize the precise order of 4,140 random binary digits in half an hour. Even more incredible than the mere fact of this feat is that this is not an innate talent, but rather a skill he taught himself.

While there are lots of different tricks for remembering better, all of the techniques used in these memory contests ultimately come down to a concept that psychologists refer to as elaborative encoding. And it’s well illustrated by a strange kind of forgetfulness that psychologists have dubbed the “Baker/baker paradox.”

The paradox goes like this:

A researcher shows two people the same photograph of a face and tells one of them that the guy is a baker and the other that his last name is Baker. A couple of days later, the researcher shows the same two subjects the same photograph and asks for the accompanying word.

The person who was told the man’s profession is much more likely to remember it than the person who was given his surname. Why should that be? Same photograph. Same word. Different amount of remembering.

When you hear that the man in the photo is a baker, that fact gets embedded in a whole network of ideas about what it means to be a baker: He cooks bread, he wears a big white hat, he smells good when he comes home from work.

The name Baker, on the other hand, is tethered only to a memory of the person’s face. That link is tenuous, and should it dissolve, the name will float off irretrievably into the netherworld of lost memories. (When a word feels like it’s stuck on the tip of the tongue, it’s likely because we’re accessing only part of the neural network that “contains” the idea, but not all of it.) But when it comes to the man’s profession, there are multiple strings to reel the memory back in.

Even if you don’t at first remember that the man is a baker, perhaps you get some vague sense of breadiness about him, or see some association between his face and a big white hat, or maybe you conjure up a memory of your own neighborhood bakery. There are any number of knots in that tangle of associations that can be traced back to his profession.

As I describe in my book “Moonwalking With Einstein”, the art of remembering better in memory competition — and to remembering better in everyday life — is about figuring out how to turn capital “B” Bakers into lowercase “b” bakers.

It’s about taking information that is lacking in context, lacking in meaning and figuring out a way to transform it so that it makes sense in the light of all the other things that you have floating around in your mind. Pridmore uses a complicated technique to memorize decks of playing cards and strings of binary digits, but we can all take advantage of the Baker/baker paradox.

If you want to make something memorable, you first have to make it meaningful.

AN IDIOT PLANE PASSENGER TRIES TO OPEN PLANE DOOR DURING FLIGHT

Authorities detained a man who tried to open the door of a commercial jet midair on Thursday, officials said.

US Airways Flight 3801 made an unscheduled landing at Boston’s Logan Airport, where Massachusetts State Police boarded the plane and took the unruly passenger into custody, State Trooper Thomas Murphy said.

The flight, operated by Air Wisconsin, was flying from Portland, Maine, to Philadelphia when the incident occurred. There were 50 passengers and three crew members onboard, the airline said.

The passenger “seemed to be disoriented” when he tried to open a cabin door on the CRJ-200 aircraft, Air Wisconsin spokeswoman Annette Daly said in a statement.

Daly said a flight attendant subdued the passenger, but Phil Orlandella, a spokesman for Massport, said other passengers restrained him.

Opening the doors of most commercial jets while in flight is nearly impossible due to the air pressure and design of the doors.

TERRELL OWENS FIRES LONGTIME AGENT DREW ROSENHAUS

Terrell Owens just keeps finding people to blame for his downward spiral. Everybody cannot be wrong. I have always said that I have a lot of love for Terrell Owens, but there is no smoke without fire.

Owens has severed ties with longtime agent Drew Rosenhaus and hired Jason Woy, a Dallas-based agent who represents current Cowboys Anthony Spencer, Jason Hatcher, Kenyon Coleman and Dan Bailey.

“I am making changes in my life so I can continue my career as a professional football player,” Owens said in a statement on his website. “I have hired Jordan Woy as my new agent.  It was important for me to hire someone who believes in my ability to help an NFL team and believes in me as a person.”

The 38-year-old wide receiver, recently released by the Allen (Texas) Wranglers of the Indoor Football League, still harbors visions of a return to the NFL, where he last played for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2010.

“I love the game of football and I know I can help a team,” Owens’ statement said. “I have had to go through some humbling times, but I am more determined than ever to show a team that I can be a huge asset to them as a player and a team leader in the locker room.”

After his very public release from the Wranglers, it was reported that the team offered Owens a $50 severance package that also included TO being evicted from the home the Wranglers provided him and forced to hand over the keys to a loaner Jeep Cherokee.

Shortly after, Owens demanded a public apology from the Wranglers and $160,000, an amount Owens believes he is owed for four game checks. According to his attorney, Owens was most upset that the team said a missed charity appearance at a local hospital played a role in his release.

Owens claimed the Wranglers privately acknowledged that a team publicist gave him an incorrect date for the visit.

“Our fans are amongst the best in the league and it is impossible to maintain a player when even our fans notice and comment on a player’s lack of effort both on and off the field,” Wranglers owner John Frankel said in a statement at the time of Owens’ release. “We need to do what is best for this team, our fans and this community.”

Owens appears ready to put the episode with the Wranglers behind him and focus on a return to the NFL, where he has played 15 seasons for five teams. For his career, Owens is sixth on the all-time list in receptions (1,078), second in receiving yards (15,934) and tied for second in receiving TDs (153).

“I am in the best shape of my life and preparing daily,” Owens said on his website. “I am looking for a team who will give me that chance and I know I will pay big dividends to them as a player and teammate.”

IT’S NOT HOW MUCH YOU MAKE, IT’S HOW MUCH YOU SAVE: 5 WAYS TO SAVE MORE MONEY

Like so many things in life, setting money aside as savings is a habit that needs to be developed. If you want to see your nest egg grow, you need to do what you can to encourage a savings habit. Setting money aside needs to become a way of life, instead of some sort of burden. If you are having trouble getting into the habit of saving, you should try these 5 ways to keep you motivated:

1. Set Achievable Savings Goals

One of the biggest issues is that you may not have a goal. You just have an idea that you need to save money, but there is no true purpose for your money. It’s hard to stay motivated when you have no clear idea of what the money is for. So it is much easier just to spend it.

Instead of pointlessly saving, create achievable savings goals that give purpose to your money. Whether you want to save $5,000 in the next six months for a vacation, or whether you want to save up five months of expenses by the end of the year for your emergency fund, having a realistic goal gives you something to work toward — and progress you can see.

2. Reward Yourself for Reaching Small Milestones

Depending on the length of your goal, you can reward yourself at certain milestones. This helps you track your progress, and also helps keep you motivated to continue saving. These rewards should be fun things that you might not normally do, but that are still small and within reason. It might be a day off (if you can take a personal day at work), a picnic in the park, dinner at a nicer restaurant than usual, or some other enjoyable activity. Just don’t blow all your savings while enjoying your small reward.

3. Automate Your Savings

One of the easiest ways to get into the habit of saving is to set up some automatic method of moving your money around. Whether you have money from your paycheck automatically deposited into a savings account (including a retirement account), or whether you do an automatic transfer each month, automatically having your savings moved around can help you adjust your lifestyle to what you end up as “take home” pay. Soon you won’t miss the money, but it will still grow and work for you.

4. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

Always denying yourself the small treats you enjoy, and focusing on penny pinching, can bring you to hate saving. While you can cut back on some of those small expenses that eventually add up, you might actually feel better about saving if you focus on cutting back on the big expenses. Forgoing the big TV is an one time thing that can save you $700 to $2,000. And you can still get good entertainment on your current TV, or use the Internet. You will probably find that you will get over the TV pretty quickly and move on. However, constantly telling yourself that you can’t get that delicious $2 bagel you love can start to create resentful feelings toward saving. It’s a daily litany of denial that can start to make saving a chore.

5. Look for High Yield Accounts

One of the most depressing things about savings is how slowly the money grows. You can increase your satisfaction with savings by looking for high yield accounts. While yields are still generally low, you can still do better than the less than 1% offered by a traditional savings account. You can also look for alternative products like money market accounts and funds, high-yield CDs and bonds. However, be aware that some of these options may not be FDIC-insured, and come with greater risk.

Bottom line: Setting aside money for the future is important, but you need to find ways to keep yourself motivated. Do any of these things work for you? What keeps you motivated to save?
