MUBI, ADAMAWA STATE, NIGERIA: GUNMEN KILL 25 STUDENTS AT FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC

At the rate at which Nigerian students and indeed Nigerian youth are being killed, the life expectancy is going to sharply drop. This is nuts!! An attack that killed 25 people, mostly students, at a Nigerian school Monday night appeared to be “an inside job” in which the gunmen called out the names of their targets.

“The attackers went to the houses of the victims, called them out by their names and killed them,” said Adamawa State Police spokesman Mohammed Ibrahim. “They used guns and knives on the victims.” Some of the victims suffered slit throats, he said.

The armed men attacked a student facility at the Federal Polytechnic, a university in Mubi, Nigeria, Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency spokesman Yuhau Shuaib said.

Among the 25 killed were 19 Federal Polytechnic students and three students from the School of Health and Technology, Ibrahim said. The three others killed were a school official, a former military man and an older gentleman, he said.

Investigators are trying to determine if the attack was related to upcoming campus elections, he said. “We believe this was an inside job.”

“By God’s grace, in the next few days we will have some suspects,” he said

Mubi is in northeast Nigeria near the border with Cameroon.

Three policemen attached to him were seriously wounded during a gun battle with the kidnappers, which created panic and sent many students and workers running into the bush to avoid being hit by bullets.
An eyewitness said the incident occurred at 11.30 am when Prof. Onyeji was driving in his official Honda Accord car into the campus with his police escort driving behind him.
On sighting the two vehicles, the kidnappers who had laid ambush near the gate, fired several shots at the escort van and displaced the policemen before jumping out of the bush to get at their target.

By press time yesterday, Prof. Onyeji’s whereabouts was still unknown as the kidnappers were yet to contact his family or the school authority.

PENNSYLVANIA MANUFACTURER’S ASSOCIATION, PENN STATE’S INSURER SEEKS TO DENY COVERAGE

Penn State’s legal battles continued Wednesday with the university’s primary general liability insurer filing a motion claiming coverage should be denied because the administration failed to disclose what it knew about former coach Jerry Sandusky’s behavior, according to legal documents.

The motion, filed in common pleas court by the Pennsylvania Manufacturer’s Association, says Penn State did not provide it with information relevant to the insurable risk the association assumed. The association has already sued Penn State over the coverage of one of Sandusky’s victims’ claims against the university, filed in November 2011.

The association has insured Penn State under general liability policies since 1976.

“It would be unlawful and contradictory to public policy to require PMA to provide coverage to PSU under any policy issued to PSU after May 1998 with respect to PSU’s concealment of Sandusky’s sexually abusive conduct … and failure to take appropriate action to prevent Sandusky from molesting minors,” the motion read.

The motion comes days after former Penn State President Graham Spanier denied a role in a university cover-up of Sandusky’s actions. Spanier has not been criminally charged in the case. However, an investigation by ex-FBI chief Louis Freeh concluded that he helped university officials conceal allegations of sexual abuse against the former assistant football coach.

KANO POLICE STATION ROCKED BY EXPLOSION AND GUN FIRE ATTACK

Kano, Nigeria’s second city and the largest in the north, was the site of Boko Haram’s deadliest attack yet, when coordinated bombings and shootings left at least 185 people dead in January.
The Islamist group’s insurgency, concentrated in Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north, has killed more than 1,000 people since mid-2009.

KANO  (AFP) – Gunmen with explosives attacked a police station on Tuesday in the northern Nigerian city of Kano, previously targeted by Islamist militant group Boko Haram, a police source said.

“Goron Dutse police station is under attack by gunmen using explosives and guns,” a senior police official said on condition of anonymity.
An AFP journalist heard five blasts and saw smoke in the area of the police station. The explosions later halted, and the extent of the damage remained unclear as well as if there were casualties.

THE HUNT IS OVER: 3 YOUNG BOYS KIDNAPPED IN ABUJA, NIGERIA RESCUED BY TRACKING DEVICE

The kidnap nightmare of three young boys by their father’s driver in Abuja ended this afternoon with the rescue of the three boys unharmed in Makurdi ,Benue State. The rescue was executed by the Nigerian police through a tracking device that was also used to rescue kidnapped victims in Owerri and the little girl kidnapped in Enugu.

The kidnappers placed phone calls demanding a ransom of N250m for the boys.
The calls triggered the search and rescue.
The tracking device was able to pinpoint the exact location from which the call was made.
The search paid off this afternoon when the kidnappers were apprehended at their hideout and the kids and vehicle used recovered with no ransom. The kids and their parents are on their way back to Abuja accompanied by security agents.
This is the third time this new tracking device has  been deployed by a Nigerian using latest American technology to rescue victims of kidnapping in Nigeria.

CHURCH EXPLOSION IN JOS, NIGERIA: 5 KILLED AND 48 INJURED

Jos, Nigeria (CNN) – At least five people were killed in a car bomb blast that leveled a church in Jos, Nigeria, during services Sunday.

The attack injured at least 48 people, hospital officials said.

Witnesses said a suicide car bomber drove toward several churches in the area before plowing into the Christ Chosen Church of God.

Bruised and bloodied parishioners emerged from the rubble after the blast.

There appeared to be a large number of casualties, including children.

Young people set up checkpoints nearby after an angry crowd drove security officers away from the church.

Many questioned how the car made it past government security checkpoints and into the area.

A March car bomb attack outside a Catholic church in Jos killed six people, according to officials.

In December, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in several northern states following a series of Christmas Day attacks on churches.

MAJOR BRIDGE COLLAPSE IN ENUGU, NIGERIA, MY HOMETOWN

The Abakpa-Nike metropolitan main bridge, in Enugu, Enugu State, Nigeria on Wednesday night caved-in due to heavy rainfall and has cut off over one million residents. My brother, Maduka and I drove over that bridge while we were at home in Nigeria, in April. My family and I actually lived in Abakpa-Nike when I was about 6 or 7 years old
The 37-year-old bridge that was built shortly after the Nigeria civil war, did not initially show any sign of threat before its sudden collapse at about 7.30 pm on Wednesday night when there was a heavy down pour. No casualties were, however, recorded.
Mrs. Rosemary Obika, who lives close to the bridge, said that at about 7.00 pm that night, they heard a loud noise, but the time they arrived on the scene, the bridge had already gone down. “People scampered for safety as motorists and other road users were diverted to Penoks area to avoid the collapsed bridge. As this was going on, another section of the bridge also collapsed and it completely cut off the road. There was great confusion.”
