MOVE YOUR BODY!! EXERCISE CAN DRAMATICALLY CURE AND PREVENT DISEASE

It wasn’t too long ago that people with conditions such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar, arthritis, asthma and heart disease, were told by Physicians to “take it easy”,”stay in bed” or ingest several medications in order to stabilize these conditions. Today, there is little doubt how the impact of lifestyle changes, including exercise, can dramatically prevent, treat and even cure many of these ailments.

Any sustained movement, like walking, bicycling, swimming, or cross-country skiing, will reduce the risk of several life-threatening diseases, such as coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and possibly cancer. Exercise does not need to be boring, expensive, time-consuming, or inconvenient. Moderate forms of exercise will give the benefits needed to prevent disease. Gardening, dancing, walking, household chores, and even shopping expeditions can give you enough exercise to meet the daily requirement. All that’s needed to personalize your fitness plan is a creative and adventurous spirit.

Exercise v.s. diet is often the debate that many health professionals evaluate. By examining each disease through clinical trials, we can better determine the efficacy of both exercise and diet in the treatment of many common ailments. Diet, for example, is the cornerstone of diabetes care, but if diet is combined with exercise, diabetics dramatically improve their condition by more than 45% than with diet alone. “The problem with our health today, is that people are just not moving enough. You’re talking about a dramatic decrease in our level of physical activity from just 30 to 50 years ago. That’s a relatively insignificant amount of time for our bodies to adapt in comparison to the activity levels we had evolved to before the technological era. This combined with irresponsible eating habits is creating the health crisis you see before you today.”

For people with chronic ailments, exercise used to be viewed as asking for trouble. However, current evidence suggests that in both health and disease, the overall prognosis is better for the exerciser than for the sedentary. For example, a recent study showed that intensive workouts can not only slow the progress of coronary disease, but actually restore lost coronary function when the disease is still stable.

Clinical trials indicate that exercise can help reduce the pain and joint damage caused by arthritis, decrease attacks and the need for medication in asthma sufferers, and ease anxiety and depression. Other research 11indicates that regular workouts may cut the risk of symptomatic gallstones by one-third. Exercise has also recently be found to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and improve adherence to such treatment.

For chronically ill individuals, the psychological as well as physical benefits of exercise can be profound. Even ten minutes of light exercise a day, can help most chronically ill patients feel more vibrant, energetic and alert.

One of the most effective killers in North America is cardiovascular disease. It is also a disease which is so easily preventable through proper exercise and diet. Out of a recent study conducted by Consumers Reports, almost 60% of people who had heart conditions, reported that exercise and diet (types of exercise and diet were not specified) helped them feel much better. Hypertension, a common precursor to cardiovascular disease is also directly influenced, treated and prevented by supervised exercise and diet.

Studies still show that most doctors still fail to advise patients about lifestyle changes to prevent and treat disease. Economic pressure for briefer doctor visits, lack of formal training in nutrition, exercise and lifestyle medicine, seem to underlie doctors’ poor performance in this area.

People with chronic medical problems should insist their health-care providers give them information on how execise and lifestyle changes can affect the course of a disease. If patients cannot obtain this information from their doctors, they should find an appropriate health professional who can.

The Chart below indicates the maximum improvement for both diet and exercise for 6 common disorders, based on well designed clinical trials. These lifestyle changes can also lead to weight loss, which eases many of these disorders, thus increasing the maximum improvement.

BETTER SEX THROUGH EXERCISE AND FITNESS

Kim Kardashian and Reggie Bush Sex

The link between physical fitness and sex is an interesting one, and one that should not be underestimated. While there are several great reasons to exercise, there is one more significant advantage: a better sex life. Recent research indicates that people who are physically fit get more enjoyment from sex and are more likely to be sexually active. Regardless of age, regular exercise results in greater sexual confidence, desire and ability to attain orgasm. Experts are not sure as to how and why aerobic exercise boosts the libido.

One theory, however, is that exercise leads to endorphin release, creating a sense of well-being that makes people more receptive to sexual activity.Exercise that is performed over a sustained time leads to a so-called “runner’s high,” caused by the release of endorphins. These endorphins are stimulating, and as well as causing us to feel great, they stimulate the release of sex hormones. The added bonus is that exercise causes us to feel better. It elevates our mood and creates a feeling of calmness. The lowering of heart rate, improved digestion, lowered blood pressure and lowered stress hormone levels combine with the feelings of well being caused by the endorphins. Add to that an increase of another hormone, oxytocin, and the result is a relaxed, content, person.

For women, the link between exercise and sex has been explored by Cindy Meston and her colleagues. Their results indicate that working out – albeit vigorously – primes women’s bodies for sexual activity. It is not simply that exercise increases genital blood flow or makes women sexually aroused. Instead, there seems to be something, as of yet unidentified, that prepares women’s bodies. After working out, she found that women’s bodies respond faster and more intensely to sexual content (such as an erotic film). Her findings are exciting because they counter the long held belief that relaxation is necessary for a good sexual experience, and assumption that might be due to the link between anxiety and erectile problems for men. I should mention that so far these effects have been documented immediately after exercise and seem to diminish quickly- indeed, they seem to be the strongest 15 minutes after exercise and fade fast.

As for men, sexual experiences also benefit from exercise. White and colleagues (1990) had two groups of men, whose average age was 48 years, all of whom were sedentary but healthy at the start of the study. One group engaged in walking, while the other in aerobic exercise. The latter group reported higher levels of sexual intimacy, more satisfying orgasms, and more reliable sexual functioning. Thus, men who are physically inactive and then aerobically exercise three or four days a week, regularly, for at least an hour at a time, soon report more sex and better sex. However, all men experienced an improvement, leading the researchers to conclude that enhanced sexuality is directly correlated with their improvement in physical fitness.

Satisfying sex lives isn’t just about the nuts and bolts of biology – it also involves self image. People who exercise often have a positive self body image, which might make them simply enjoy their bodies more, too. Penhollow and Young (2004) found frequency of exercise and physical fitness enhanced attractiveness and increased energy levels. They write that those who exercise are more likely to experience a greater level of satisfaction and a positive perception of self, which may cause them to believe they are more desirable and may perform better sexually

One last thought – sex itself is a physical activity and burns calories and increases fitness. Many factors influence how many calories are spent during sex, but most reports seem to indicate about 85 for a half hour to hour session, which is about the same as bowling. Unlike bowling, though, sex can also increase self-esteem, cardio-vascular health, emotional intimacy, improve sleeping, and increase immunity!

One thing is for certain: the benefits of exercise are endless and can lead to a longer, healthier and happier life. Despite the advantages of an active life, more than 60% of Americans do not exercise regularly, while a mere 18.8% of adults in 2009 met the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Physical Activity Guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening physical activity.

The Center for Disease Control recommends three or more sessions per week of “activities that last 20 minutes or more at a time … that require moderate to vigorous levels of exertion.”
Regardless of your current exercise habits, it is never too late to begin a workout program. You could join a gym, hire a personal trainer and learn how to exercise correctly and safely. Consult a doctor if you are just beginning an exercise regimen to maximize safety.

OLYMPICS: WHY AFRICAN ATHLETES FELL BY THE WAYSIDE

Lagos, Nigeria (CNN) — Two weeks ago I visited the Africa Village at London’s Kensington Gardens, to appear on a radio show being broadcast from there. After the interview, I lingered, wandering around the national stands, savoring the Nigerian hip-hop that blared from the speakers. I stood in line to receive an inscription — carefully traced out on paper by a cheerful, elderly man wielding a quill pen — of my name in English and Arabic.

So you can imagine my shock when I heard news of the premature closure of the Village — fallout of a debt row involving the company managing events at the village, and a key supplier.

For me that tragic turn of events symbolizes all that is wrong with sports administration in many African countries. Government funds meant to help Nigeria’s contingent prepare for London 2012 — a total of $14 million, according to Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi — weren’t released to the ministry until April, just three months before the opening ceremony.

Abdullahi himself was only drafted to the ministry in December 2011, in an acting capacity; his substantive appointment was not announced until May.

Now I’m not a sports technocrat, but something in the realm of common sense suggests to me that the Olympics are generally won and lost long before the opening ceremony cauldron is touched by fire.

Nigeria, an unrepentantly heavy trader in the stock market of optimism, went to London the way it likes to travel to global engagements (be they sporting events or climate change summits) — eschewing serious preparation, expecting the best, and inevitably attracting the worst, which actually varies in degree depending on the amount of good luck in the air.

In the end, the opening ceremony march-past turned out to be the high point of our London 2012 performance. From a tally of four medals in Beijing (1 silver and 3 bronze) we dropped into medal-less oblivion in London.

As with Nigeria, so has it been with Ghana (Ghana’s last Olympic medal was its Barcelona 1992 bronze in the men’s soccer event).

Kenya, with a much better Olympic record, has also disappointed in London. The east African country, 13th on the medals table four years ago, with a total of 14 medals, all in long-distance athletics (six of which were golds), dropped to 28th place in London, with 11 medals (only two of which were golds).

From the tales of woe filtering out from the various national camps one might be forgiven for assuming it’s the same set of officials managing the Nigerians, Ghanaians and the Kenyans.

Cameroon’s problems are of a slightly different nature — seven of its athletes vanished from camp two weeks into the Games, presumably envisaging brighter prospects as asylum-seekers than as home-bound Olympians.

Across the continent there will be much handwringing and gnashing of teeth in the weeks and months to come. Governments will set up probe panels and probe panels to probe those probe panels.

Two years ago, after Nigeria’s disastrous outing at the 2010 World Cup, President Goodluck Jonathan, still fresh in office, fired the football federation board and placed a two-year ban on Nigeria’s participation in international football competitions. The purpose of that ban, according to a presidential spokesperson, was to “enable us put our house in order and enable us work out a more meaningful way to engage the global stage in terms of football so that this kind of rather embarrassing outcome we had in South Africa will not repeat itself.”

Two years on, our embarrassments have grown muscle and wings. Like Usain Bolt recycling his wins with a certainty bordering on the surreal, we have made a spectacle of recycling our sporting failures. Different arenas, same scenarios.

I shouldn’t be too negative. It’s perhaps not a totally hopeless situation. In a recent interview a chastened minister Abdullahi was quoted as saying: “If we want to win and compete sustainably, we have to develop systems that establish clear connection between process and outcome.”

Sadly systems are something Nigeria is not very good at or keen on building or sustaining. But for now we’ll have to trust that the reform-minded minister has it all planned out. “Failure can have a galvanising effect. And, I believe it is easier to deal with failure than to deal with success. This failure is an opportunity to do the right thing,” he went on to say.

I bet he knows only too well that failure also presents an opportunity to fail again, and fail worse. Which is where the bulk of Nigeria’s experience lies.

Abdullahi will have to do several things all at once — fight mafias and cabals for whom self-enrichment is the pre-eminent sport, enlist private sector funding (long stifled by corruption) on a larger scale, rebuild a comatose school sports, raise the standard of the National Sports Festival, and offer his unconditional support to the Segun Odegbamis and Mobolaji Akiodes and others who, against many odds, and often in spite of the government, are striving to build the next generation of sporting talent.

None of these will be easy. If the past is anything to go by, time is not on his side. And this is not only because the countdown to Rio 2016 has started. Since democracy returned to Nigeria in 1999, we’ve had a total of 12 ministers for sport, translating to a new minister roughly every 12 months.

Going by that arithmetic, Abdullahi and his lofty dreams already have their expiry date bearing down on them with the speed of Usain Bolt, and the deadly accuracy of Yi Siling. He will therefore be needing large doses of good fortune; the sort that every now and then transforms an underdog into an Olympic champion.

MARK CUBAN BLASTS SPORTS MEDIA OVER NBA FINALS COVERAGE

I always had a lot of respect for Mark Cuban. He is a great businessman and unselfish sports team owner. The athletes on his basketball will die for him on the basketball court.

Mark Cuban, billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks, was a guest on ESPNs First Take on Friday morning and took a number of shots at the media for the way they cover sports, and specifically singled out Skip Bayless, who hosts the show with Stephen A. Smith and Jay Crawford:

“It’s not just Skip, it’s sports writers, sports media in general where everything is generalities, ‘excruciating pressure,’ what the hell is that?”

“You guys like to talk in complete generalities, where nobody can question you, right? You don’t ever use facts, you don’t ever use substance. [Y]ou have the presumption that people care what you say. They don’t.”

Cuban went on to say that it’s ridiculous for Bayless to say that the Miami Heat won the championship because they wanted it more than the Oklahoma City Thunder, and said that ultimately it comes down to execution.

When Bayless told Cuban that LeBron James played harder than Kevin Durant in the NBA Finals, Cuban said:

“That is the most ridiculous thing any sports writer has ever said.”

Cuban went on First Take after his tweets on June 19 prompted Bayless to invite him to come on the show; Cuban had tweeted that his two-year-old son knows more about the NBA than Bayless.

PLEASE LET ME PLAY

I was writing an article in order to make a case for the importance of my charity, Champion Spirit Foundation in Nigeria. Due to the extreme poverty in parts of Nigeria, many children are idle and as we know, an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. Playing sports offers children more than just physical benefits. Sports typically help kids academically and socially as well. The benefits are the same whether or not your child actually excels at the sport. Although if they are really good they will probably want to continue playing when they are older. If your child isn’t good enough to play competitively on a school team try signing them up for a city league or encourage them to just go shoot some hoops with their friends or church group.

Read on for ten ways playing sports benefit children.

2. Research has found that kids that play sports, especially girls, are more likely to have a positive body image and higher self-esteem. They also are less likely to be overweight.

3. Kids involved in sports are less likely to take drugs or smoke because they realize the impact that these destructive activities can have upon their performance. Girls who play sports are also less likely to become pregnant.

4. Physical activities are a good way to relieve stress and reduce depression.

5. Sports help kids develop discipline. They learn to set goals and then work to achieve those goals. They learn that by working hard they can accomplish the things that they want to in their lives.

6. Kids who play sports quickly learn that sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. They learn to be a good sport in both situations. It also helps them learn to deal with disappointment and go on.

7. Statistics show that kids who are involved in sports while in high school are more likely to experience academic success and graduate from high school.

8. Sports help develop teamwork and leadership skills. Kids quickly learn that they have to work together as a team to win the game.

9. Motor skills, strategic thinking, and even math skills are learned by playing sports. Students develop strategic thinking as they figure out plays and the best way to get around a player or score a goal. Math skills are used as they calculate scores and stats.

10. Regular exercise increases quality of life. Children who exercise are more likely to continue the practice into adulthood.

Whatever way you look at it sports benefits your child.

ARE YOU A FITNESS KNOW-IT-ALL?

It’s monday morning and plenty of snow is still on the ground. I wanted to run a few miles outdoors, but the snow on the ground is no bueno! I guess I’m going to have to do it on a treadmill. I prefer running outdoors because it’s more interesting. You can look at the scenery and you can actually people watch (which is one of my favorite pastimes), while running. The treadmill can be so boring. I like to get my run out of the way before I do my boxing training because I’m usually so exhausted after boxing. We’ll see how today goes.

I was researching a blog post idea and stumbled on this cool article on WebMd that discusses 9 of the biggest fitness myths out there. Check it out below:

Top 9 Fitness Myths — Busted!

It’s easy to fall into the trap: A workout buddy passes along an exercise tip, and then you pass it on to several folks you know. Your kid’s coach gives you advice, and sure enough you hear the same thing from several other parents. So you figure it must be true. But experts say that in the world of fitness, myths and half-truths abound – and some of them may be keeping you and your family from getting the best and safest workout.

“Some myths are just harmless half-truths, but many others can actually be harmful,” says professional triathlete and personal coach Eric Harr, author of The Portable Personal Trainer. “They can cause frustration in working out and sometimes even lead to injury,” he notes.

One reason myths get started, says Harr, is that we all react to exercise a little differently. So what’s true for one person may not be true for another.

“In this sense you sometimes have to find your own ‘exercise truths’ – the things that are true for you,” says Harr.

That said, experts say there are also some fitness myths that just need busting, and the sooner the better!

To help put you and your family on the path to a healthier, safer, and more enjoyable workout, WebMD got the lowdown from several top experts on what’s true and what’s not when it comes to exercise tips.

Fitness Myth No. 1: Running on a treadmill puts less stress on your knees than running on asphalt or pavement.

“Running is a great workout, but it can impact the knees — and since it’s the force of your body weight on your joints that causes the stress, it’s the same whether you’re on a treadmill or on asphalt,” says Todd Schlifstein, DO, a clinical instructor at New York University Medical Center’s Rusk Institute.

The best way to reduce knee impact, says Schlifstein, is to vary your workout.

“If you mix running with other cardio activities, like an elliptical machine, or you ride a stationary bike, you will reduce impact on your knees so you’ll be able to run for many more years,” says Schlifstein.

Fitness Myth No. 2: Doing crunches or working on an “ab machine” will get rid of belly fat.

Don’t believe everything you hear on those late-night infomercials! Harr says that while an ab-crunching device might “help strengthen the muscles around your midsection and improve your posture,” being able to “see” your abdominal muscles has to do with your overall percentage of body fat.  If you don’t lose the belly fat, he says, you won’t see the ab muscles.

But can doing ab crunches help you to lose that belly fat? Experts say no.

“You can’t pick and choose areas where you’d like to burn fat,” says Phil Tyne, director of the fitness center at the Baylor Tom Landry Health & Wellness Center in Dallas.  So crunches aren’t going to target weight loss in that area.

“In order to burn fat, you should create a workout that includes both cardiovascular and strength-training elements. This will decrease your overall body fat content,” including the area around your midsection, he says.

Fitness Myth No. 3: An aerobic workout will boost your metabolism for hours after you stop working out.

This statement is actually true — but the calorie burn is probably not nearly as much as you think!

Harr says that while your metabolism will continue to burn at a slightly higher rate after you finish an aerobic workout, the amount is not statistically significant. In fact, it allows you to burn only about 20 extra calories for the day. While there’s a little bit more of a metabolic boost after strength training, he says, it’s still marginal.

“It doesn’t really count towards your caloric burn,” he says.

Fitness Myth No. 4: Swimming is a great weight loss activity.

While swimming is great for increasing lung capacity, toning muscles, and even helping to burn off excess tension, Harr says the surprising truth is that unless you are swimming for hours a day, it may not help you lose much weight.

“Because the buoyancy of the water is supporting your body, you’re not working as hard as it would if, say, you were moving on your own steam — like you do when you run,” says Harr.

Further, he says, it’s not uncommon to feel ravenous when you come out of the water.

“It may actually cause you to eat more than you normally would, so it can make it harder to stay with an eating plan,” he says.

Fitness Myth No. 5: Yoga can help with all sorts of back pain.

The truth is that yoga can help with back pain, but it’s not equally good for all types.

“If your back pain is muscle-related, then yes, the yoga stretches and some of the positions can help. It can also help build a stronger core, which for many people is the answer to lower back pain,” says Schlifstein.

But if your back problems are related other problems (such as a ruptured disc) yoga is not likely to help, he says. What’s more, it could actually irritate the injury and cause you more pain.

If you do have back pain, get your doctor’s OK before starting any type of exercise program.

Fitness Myth No. 6:  If you’re not working up a sweat, you’re not working hard enough.

“Sweating is not necessarily an indicator of exertion,” says Tyne. “Sweating is your body’s way of cooling itself.”

It’s possible to burn a significant number of calories without breaking a sweat: Try taking a walk or doing some light weight training.

Fitness Myth No. 7:  As long as you feel OK when you’re working out, you’re probably not overdoing it.

One of the biggest mistakes people tend to make when starting or returning to an exercise program is doing too much too soon. The reason we do that, says Schlifstein, is because we feel OK while we are working out.

“You don’t really feel the overdoing it part until a day or two later,” he says.

No matter how good you feel when you return to an activity after an absence, Schlifstein says you should never try to duplicate how much or how hard you worked in the past.  Even if you don’t feel it at the moment, you’ll feel it in time, he says — and it could take you back out of the game again.

Fitness Myth No. 8:  Machines are a safer way to exercise because you’re doing it right every time.

Although it may seem as if an exercise machine automatically puts your body in the right position and helps you do all the movements correctly, that’s only true if the machine is properly adjusted for your weight and height, experts say.

“Unless you have a coach or a trainer or someone figure out what is the right setting for you, you can make just as many mistakes in form and function, and have just as high a risk of injury, on a machine as if you work out with free weights or do any other type of nonmachine workout,” says Schlifstein.

Fitness Myth No. 9:  When it comes to working out, you’ve got to feel some pain if you’re going to gain any benefits.

Of all the fitness rumors ever to have surfaced, experts agree that the “no pain-no gain” holds the most potential for harm.

While you should expect to have some degree of soreness a day or two after working out, Schlifstein says, that’s very different from feeling pain while you are working out.

“A fitness activity should not hurt while you are doing it, and if it does, then either you are doing it wrong, or you already have an injury,” he says.

As for “working through the pain,” experts don’t advise it.  They say that if it hurts, stop, rest, and see if the pain goes away. If it doesn’t go away, or if it begins again or increases after you start to work out, Schlifstein says, see a doctor

HELLO…GOOD MORNING FROM NEW YORK!

I woke up a few hours ago from such a deep sleep. I passed out last night, shortly after I came home. I think I passed out at about 11pm. I tried to stay up for as long as could, so that I wouldn’t suffer the effects of jet lag. It worked. I don’t like being slowed down by jet lag, so I make sure that once I arrive in a city, I sychronize my sleep to match that city in order to make the sleep transition easy. It was so cold last night. I can’t believe that within 24 hours, I went from warm and tropic to frigid amd miserable. It’s all good though. Nobody said that life in the trenches would be easy.

I have to get back into my routine of eating three meals a day. While in Nigeria, I would eat breakfast and most of the time, skip lunch because we had so much running around to do. Later in the evening, we would sit down for a big dinner and drinks. This routine is not ideal for building muscle. If you are working out, you have to take in enough calories in order to support muscle building. In order to keep my metabolism firing, I have to eat at least 3-4 meals per day. You never want your body to go into starvation mode because that it causes it to store fat. I definitely was not doing that and that is why I lost 4 pounds. I’m happy that I lost weight instead of gaining weight though. I can always put muscle on by eating more food. Besides, a slimmer me is a leaner, more defined me. I’m happy either way. I don’t stress my weight, although I have to say that if I have a shoot, I work to stay leaner. I do like to keep my weight at about 201 pounds for boxing. I don’t want these young guys thinking that they can push me around.

That said, I’m going to eat breakfast and then head to the gym. Today will be my first full workout in NYC. I’m dreading it a little bit because I know that it will be tough. No pain…No gain!! That’s what they say. I will try to remember that when I’m kicking my own ass. I will also train with my boxing trainer at some point today. No rest for the weary!! What’s on your agenda for today?

YOU MUST ADAPT IN ORDER TO WIN!!

It’s raining outside in NYC…again. Actually, I shouldn’t complain because the past several days have been very nice. It’s been unusually warm for the last week in November. Global warming Anyone? Or should I say….CLIMATE CHANGE.

In business and in the building of a brand, you must be willing to adapt in order to win. For years, I beleived that I had come up with the perfect name for my documentary. I had come up ‘The Triumph of The Will’. It was perfect!! It truly described my story. I willed myself to win. I had put the title on all sorts of press materials and even on the trailer.

I then received a message from a friend of mine which informed me that there was a huge Nazi propanda film titled “The Triumph of The Will’. My friend is Jewish and I felt terrible.  F*#@K!!!! What would I do now? I should have done better research on the name that I had chosen. It would take so much to change everything. I have to re-edit videos, change my bio, change the graphic on the film’s poster, the list goes on and on. Initially I thought, well, what a blow it would be the Nazis for a black man to triumph against all odds and live to tell the story, using a film by the same name as theirs.

But then I thought deeper about it and realized that I will spend all my time explaining why I chose to keep a name that is associated with evil. It just would not have been a smart thing to do. My story is such a positive one that not changing the name would demean it. So I dug in. I started editing the trailer and kickstarter page, altering graphics, changing my bio and more. I was so focused to get this done that I didn’t leave the apartment. I didn’t even go to the gym for two days. I could not risk hurting my Jewish friends and millions of Jewish people all over the world.

Even though it was a lot of work, it was worth it. I was happy to disassociate myself with all that negativity. You must adapt in order to win!!

GREETINGS FROM THE TRENCHES

It’s been quite a few days since I wrote in my blog. If you are in America, I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving.

As you might have noticed, I haven’t written a blog post in a while. This is so because the past two weeks have been the busiest in a very long time. I had been putting in 18 hour days. It’s difficult to get the mind settled for long enough to write when there is so much going on. It was difficult to wind down enough in order to get some sleep, let alone write a blog.

I was working on setting up a kickstarter.com page. Kickstarter as I mentioned in a previous post is a website designed to help filmmakers raise funds to complete their projects. People usually have a graphics and media department that handles things such as this. Being that I don’t have such a department, I have to do all the set up myself. I did all the writting and graphic design for the page. Take a look at the image to the left, I designed that. It is the poster for the film. I usually love writting, graphic design and video editing, but there was just so much of it. I got it done though. Noone wants to listen to excuses, they just want to know that you delivered. It literarily felt like I was in a trench while I was doing much of this work because I rarely saw the light of day. It is all done though!!

Another major thing that took up much of my time was working on finalizing contract issues with a PR company in Nigeria. In my experience, much of business lives and dies in the contract. You have to go through every word, every line and every paragraph with a fine tooth comb. It’s always best to have a lawyer take a look at all your contracts before you sign. Contracts are usually written to cover the interests of the other party, so you must make sure that you are covered before signing. This was a rigorous process, but thankfully, We were able to get it done. It is signed now and we are ready to move forward with the trip to Nigeria.

So now the page is done, please check it out and give. Please help support my project and help make this film come true. Thank you

WE HAVE TO FIGHT THE POWER!!

Black Male Model Ngo OKafor

Today’s blog will be short and hopefully, sweet, because I have to run out to a sparring session in a few minutes. I didn’t want to run out without leaving you with some food for thought. It’s all about consistency. The past few days have been hectic and I haven’t had time to sit, collect my thoughts and write a blog that anyone would want to read. So, here it is….

I know many people would think that I’m talking about the rap song, ‘Fight The Power’, but not this time. In this case the ‘power’ is temptation. We have to fight the temptation to stay on the couch and watch TV instead of working out. The temptation to over eat. The temptation to do all the things we know are bad for us, but feel good. It’s important to know that it feels good in the short term, but hurts us in the long term.

Like I said, short and sweet. See you soon. I promise that the next one will be longer.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON OUT HERE!!

Ngo Okafor Black Male Model

Monday was a great day for me. I didn’t want to talk about me yesterday because I felt that news that was bigger than me happened. Joe Frazier passed away on monday. Monday was a great day for me because I ran 7 miles in 58 minutes. That is major for me!! It’s hard for me to talk about that in this post today because as I was leaving the gym yesterday, I received a tweet that rapper, producer, actor Heavy D passed away. Back-to-back days of people I admired passing away was just crazy. Heavy D was only 44. The scond act of his life was just starting. What a year. All this news of death makes me wonder what the hell is going on out here!!! It just shows once again that you’re here today and gone tomorrow. With all this bad news, it just seems so trivial to talk about running on a treadmill or lifting weights to build muscle.

Some say that talking about happier things, keeping our minds away from the pain of loss, makes us feel better, but it doesn’t. We might feel better for a few minutes while we laugh, but we have eventually have to deal. We have to face it and then we can make sense of it and move past it. So crazy! Until then I’ll continue to work hard because that is the one thing I can control. I can control how fast my legs or how much weight I can move. I can control whether I give in to the pain or push through it. Everything else is up to the higher powers.

As I run my 6-7 miles today, my mind will be full of people that we have loved and lost and pray that they rest in perfect peace.

TRUE WARRIOR GONE

Joe Frazier by Ngo Okafor Black Male Model

Joe Frazier by Ngo Okafor Black Male Model

The boxing world and indeed the world in general has lost a great warrior. ‘Smoking’ Joe Frazier died yesterday, losing his battle with liver cancer. He was only 67 years old. In this day and age, 67 is extremely young. Joe Frazier was the first man to beat Muhammad Ali. He dominated the fight from begining to end. Frazier was not a big heavyweight. He was only about 5’10″ tall and a little over 200 lbs, but knocked out guys much bigger than he was. He was in such great condition that he was always in perpetual motion during fights which made him hard to hit and gave him power in his punches.

What makes this story even more sad is that Joe Frazier was such a good person. When Muhammad Ali was in exile from boxing due to his refusal to fight in the Vietnam war, Joe gave him money and supported him. Frazier actully petiotioned to the government to reinstate Ali. He spoke to the president on behalf of Ali. He was still fond of and respected Ali even when Ali continued to disrespect him in the media, calling him a gorrilla and an Uncle Tom.

Joe Frazier showed that with hardwork and dedcation you can summount all obstacles. No one gave him a shot against Ali. He was smaller than Ali and most felt that the combination Ali’s blazing speed and size would be impossible for Joe Frazier to overcome. Joe on the hand trained his ass off and belived that he could and would beat Ali. He hunted him down and never got tired. He scored a devastating knockdown that Ali surprisingly got up from. It was an amazing fro ‘Smoking’ Joe. He got his nickname due to his work rate.

Joe Frazier died poor. Muhammad Ali made and continues to make millions from his image as a fighter, but Joe Frazier, who is considered one of the top 10 heavyweights of all time, died poor. Really sad. He gave his whole being to the sport and boxing did not love him back. He probably was feeling symptoms but because he couldn’t afford adequate healthcare, never went to get checked out. By the time he did, it was too late. He was diagnosed about 4 weeks ago. By the time he was diagnosed, his body was probably too ravaged by the disease that there nothing that could be done for him.

OPEN UP YOUR MIND, SO YOU CAN GROW

Writing can be a challenge at times. I’m sitting at my desk, but the words are slow to come.  So, I’m  just going to sit here, push these keys and hope that something good comes of it at the end. This weekend was more eventful than most because I got to perform in an Opera on saturday. It was so much fun. I didn’t sing in the Opera, but played a key part in it, which included being in certain state of undress. The women loved it, the undress I mean. The guys were inspired by it…I hope. I got to kick some ass as well.

The show was a dinner style show at the Tuxedo Park Lodge. The audience was close to us. I’m sure they felt as though they were in the show. As a matter of fact, some audience were called upon to join the certain parts of the show. It reminded of one of the shows that a speakeasy. I’ve been watching the Prohibition documentary on PBS, so excuse my excitement about speakeasies. The other performers were seasoned veterans but had never performed a dinner style. It was fun for all of us because there was a lot of improvisation because the piece was designed for a stage, not a dinning room. I was happy that I allowed myself to experience and be a part of this show. I always thought Operas were long and painfully boring, but now I see that are beautiful and the music will blow you away.

I never knew that a place such as Tuxedo Park existed. Tuxedo Park is in the town of Tuxedo which is about an hour drive upstate New York. It’s a small village of a little more than 700 people (using the census figures from 2000). It’s a very beautiful place. It’s kinda Sleepy Hollowish. I wish I could shoot a movie here. They have their own school, church, bank and they even have their own mayor. Kinda cool.

Now I have to open myself up to the 6 miles that I have to run today. I usually don’t listen to music when I run, but I think that I need some Lil’ Wayne and Rick Ross to get me through the run today. I will keep you posted on how my workout goes today. Hmm..the blog was not so bad after all!

OMG!!! SHE HELPED ME DO IT!!!

For a very long time, my workout routine has consisted of the following – running, boxing and strength training(weight training). Lately, I started to incorporate other training modalities. I started taking spinning classes at Fly Wheel Sports in New York City. Most strength and conditioning trainers and coaches oppose large group classes. They do so for the most part because the classes are usually too large for the instructor to pay attention to each person in the class. They can’t watch for incorrect technique or ask questions about prior injuries. I can completely understand that. At the same time, I must say that I have never seen anyone get injured during any of the classes that I have attended. I’m sure that it does happen, but I haven’t witnessed it.  In my experience most of the injuries occur due to the client being over zealous and taking way too many classes.

Furthermore, enough cannot be said about the camaraderie that exists in these group classes. I have seen it. I have benefited from this as well. Let me give you a scenario – It’s Tuesday afternoon, but it feels like 11am on friday. You are exhausted and all want to do is take a nap. Unfortunately, you have a class scheduled after work. It’s too late to cancel without being charged. You would give anything not to go, but you know that you will feel worse if you don’t go. So you drag yourself there. The class starts and all you can think of is quitting; no one will notice, but then you look over to your right and there is a girl who is half your size crushing the workout and smiling while doing it. You can’t let he beat you, so push through. You try to beat her and show her that you are the man! Before you know it, the class is over. You did it! She helped you do it. You sweated your ass off and burnt a ton of calories. That’s exactly my point. It doesn’t matter how you do it as long as you get it done.

Most guys think that group classes are for girls. That is not true. If used properly, It can make you leaner. I don’t think that classes should be done without strengthening work, but it definitely is better than not doing anything at all. As I continue to take these classes and do my strengthening workouts(consistently), I have been getting progressively leaner. I am actually stronger than I was when I started taking classes. The classes are so intense that I believe that there is some carry over to my heavy weight lifting. If you can tolerate the extreme burn, withstand the pain of the super high repetitions performed in these classes, you should be able to handle pushing out an extra rep, even while lifting heavy weights. Most importantly, you can make so many new friends and that is worth more than the cost of admission!!!

For this to happen, you have to BE OPEN TO TRYING NEW THINGS!
