ROBIN GIBBS OF THE BEE GEES DIES AT 62 AFTER A LONG BATTLE WITH CANCER

Who doesn’t remember John Travolta strutting down street in ‘Saturday Night Fever’?I remember listening to the Bee Gees as a kid. The music was amazing. The second that looped disco beat starts up and the infectious riff begins to strut you’re transported to a decade where flares, big chains and silk shirts open to the navel are embraced and desired. The feverishly high voices break out and suddenly we’re all John Travolta on the dance floor.

Their super high pitch stood out in my mind forever. News from London says that Robin Gibbs has died at 62 after a long battle with cancer.

I LOVE SATURDAYS!

As a kid, on saturday mornings, I would get a chance to see both my mom and dad relaxing because they didn’t have to rush off to work and I didn’t have to go to school. My dad would read the paper and grade his students’ papers while drinking tea with milk. They didn’t  drink coffee. Thank God because I might be struggling with caffeine addiction in my adulthood. My brothers and I would wake up and play in our bedroom until it was time to come out for breakfast. Damn…thoughts of Ogbogu run through my head. I remember when he was just a baby. I used to change his diapers. We used the cloth diapers back in those days. One of my chores on Saturdays was to wash the week’s worth of his diapers. I can remember even then that I loved him so much that I didn’t mind doing it. I actually looked forward to doing it because I felt that in my own little way, I was taking part in raising him.

After breakfast we had our chores, but it would be much more laid back than it would be during the week. I remember those dry-season mornings when we would have to wake up and water the lawn and hedges before getting ready fo school. All you youngins don’t know anything about, no running water and having to carry several buckets of water, with sleep in your eyes, to make sure the watering is done adequately.

But those days are long gone now. Very few people read the paper these days. It’s all blogs and news feeds. I can’t complain though. If people still read newspapers, no one would give a damn about the contents of my blog. Either way,  I LOVE SATURDAYS!! It is the one truly free day. You can go out on friday without fear of not waking up on time for work. Even if you do go too hard on friday night, which we have all done, you have Sunday to drink a ton of fluids and recover.

So go out there and enjoy your free day. It’s cold as hell here in New York, but I’m going to go outside and enjoy the day.
