Old Dominion wide receiver Reid Evans, who will be a senior this fall, was suspended indefinitely from the team after he and another ODU student were arrested and charged with two counts each of rape, sodomy, abduction, conspiracy to commit sodomy and conspiracy to commit abduction.
Evans, the team’s second-leading receiver last season, and ODU student Jack Ly are scheduled to appear in court Monday in connection with the charges.
Old Dominion football coach Bobby Wilder announced Evans’ suspension Sunday. The university did not comment on the charges but said the alleged victims were not students.
“We hold all of our young men accountable to high standards of conduct, as they serve as ambassadors for our University,” Wilder said in the statement. “We respect the due process of our legal system as these charges are investigated, however I want to ensure the integrity of our football program and university are not compromised throughout this process.”
ODU police said the rape-related incidents took place June 17 in one of the school’s residence halls. School spokeswoman Jennifer Mullen Collins sent an email to students Friday saying that circumstances “may suggest the possible involvement of date rape drugs.”
Evans and Ly are being held at Norfolk City Jail. Evans had been suspended once before for “conduct unbecoming a Monarch,” missing much of spring practice in 2011, according to The Virginian-Pilot. Old Dominion never specified what Evans did, but court records show he was convicted of being drunk in public in March of that year.
Evans, 22, led ODU in receptions during his first two seasons and was second last year. He was on the All-CAA third team as a wide receiver and punt returner.
