INMATES REDUCE SENTENCES BY RIDING BIKES FOR ENERGY AND READING BOOKS

For hours at a time, Ronaldo Marcelo Wanderlei da Silva pedals on a stationary bike for a cause. But it is not an ordinary bike, nor an ordinary cause.

Da Silva is an inmate at the prison in Santa Rita do Sapucai,Brazil, near Sao Paulo. He is among a small group of inmates who have been given the chance to lower their sentences by exercising on customized stationary bikes attached to car batteries that charge as they pedal. The batteries are in turn used to power street lights in the local plaza.

The program exists only at this one prison, but is not the only recent effort at out-of-the-box thinking in Brazil’s penal system.

Jose Henrique Mallmann, a judge in Santa Rita do Sapucai, came up with the idea for the pedaling program while doing internet searches for cost-free, clean energy sources. It was a personal curiosity, he said, and it led him to a story about an American gym that is partly powered by its patrons’ bicycle workouts.

In his small city, it was easy to adapt the idea and put it in practice with the local prison, he said.

The program provides a type of poetic justice, he said. Most inmates at some point deprived a sense of security from their victims. Now, by providing clean energy that powers the city’s plaza at night, they are providing a sense of security.

“This has been very well received. We are very satisfied with the public reaction,” Mallmann said.

Brazil’s prisons, by and large, are overcrowded and unpleasant places. According to the ministry of justice, Brazil’s prisons are at 167% of capacity, as of December 2011. The prison population has more than doubled since 2001.

But new initiatives are finding creative ways to address these issues while helping inmates and society at the same time.

Another recent program — this one at the federal level — allows inmates to reduce their sentence for reading books. The idea is to help inmates be better prepared for success when they reintegrate with the outside world.

Inmates can shave four days off their sentence through each book they read, up to 48 days per year, the new law states. The “Redemption Through Reading” program, as it’s known, requires the inmates to write a book report. The law goes as far as to specify that these reports must be written neatly and must not stray from the topic of the book.

The books available to inmates will include literary classics and scientific and philosophical tomes, among others.

“There is very alarming crisis in the penal system,” said Leonardo Schmitt de Bem, a Brazilian professor and expert on criminal law. “Proposals like this, which reduce sentences and give a social and cultural foundation to people are very interesting.”

The reading program addresses the overcrowding problem and gives inmates a cultural foundation, he said. Reading is an important tool because a large percentage of Brazilian prisoners come from poor backgrounds and have little education.

Nearly half of Brazilian inmates — 46% — have not completed more than nine years of basic education, according to the ministry of justice. More than 26,000 prisoners (5%) are illiterate.

The new law gives inmates something to do, and better prepares them for then they reintegrate with society, de Bem said.

“It is a necessary measure given the prison crisis in Brazil,” he said.

The program has existed for several years, but was codified into the law just last month. It is a “pioneering” initiative, de Bem said, but would have much greater impact if it were imposed on all prisons, not just the federal ones, which hold just a fraction of the country’s inmates.

In Santa Rita do Sapucai, Mallmann says he has bigger dreams than having inmates powering street lamps. He envisions a system where the battery power is converted into electricity that can be used to power houses.

In the short term, the goal is to power the city’s entire plaza with clean energy produced by the prisoners.

Currently, there are four bicycles that require 10 hours of pedaling to fully charge one battery. The energy is enough to power 10 street lamps, out of 34 lamps that provide light for the plaza.

Authorities hope to expand the number of bikes to 10 in the near future, Mallmann said.

For every 16 hours of pedaling, inmates have their sentences reduced by one day, with no maximum on how much they can bike, he said.

Da Silva, the inmate at the Santa Rita do Sapucai prison, said at first the prison population didn’t know what to make of the stationary bicycles, but estimates that now, some 80% of prisoners want to participate.

“I started to learn more about the project and only then I understood how important it is for the city,” he said.

For now, there are two teams of four inmates who were chosen to participate, based on their good behavior.

“The project is very good for the prisoners, it shows the good they can do,” he said.

Da Silva is serving a five-and-a-half year sentence for assault, and has erased 20 days off his punishment since he began pedaling two months ago, he said.

The 36-year-old said that the time on the bike also gives him time to reflect on his situation.

While he’s pedaling, “I think about my imprisonment, about my freedom, my wife, my kids,” he said.

AMIR KHAN KNOCKED OUT BY DANNY GARCIA!! LOSES TITLE BELTS!!!

Last night, I witnessed the delivery of the perfect shot that boxing desperately needed. The shot came in an HBO  fight between The Champion Amir Khan, and the undefeated challenger, Danny Garcia. Amir Khan was scheduled to fight Lamont Peterson, but when Peterson tested positive for synthetic testosterone, Danny Garcia was selected as a replacement.

Amir Khan was a 6-1 favorite and by far the bigger man. He came swinging and landing fast, hard shots and early on in fight, it seemed that Khan would stop Garcia. Garcia on the other hand showed tremendous poise while weathering the storm and keeping his hands up, on defense. Then in the third round, Amir Khan jumped in to throw a wild combination, but got caught by a perfectly timed and placed counter left hook. Khan went down and was badly hurt. With all credit to Khan, he fought valiantly despite being on extremely shaky legs.

Khan survived the third round, but got knocked down two more times in the fourth round and the referee, Kenny Bayless jumped in and stopped the fight after giving Khan an eight count. This was truly an amazing fight on HBO. A fight that boxing has needed for a very long time. Amir Khan is a true warrior. He fights anyone and everyone that’s put in front of him. Unfortunately, he did not come out victorious in this one. It’s going to be a great summer for boxing!!

CNN’S ANDERSON COOPER COMES OUT: I’M GAY, HAPPY AND PROUD

In a lengthy e-mail message to the Daily Beast’s Andrew Sullivan that was posted to the site on Monday, CNN’s Anderson Cooper comes out publicly as gay.

Sullivan, who writes that he has counted Cooper as a friend for more than two decades, says in the article that he asked Cooper to weigh in on a recent Entertainment Weekly piece that examined the trend of gay people coming out in a “more … matter-of-fact way” than in the past. Sullivan, who is openly gay and an advocate of same-sex marriage, says he asked for Cooper’s opinion “for reasons that are probably obvious to most.”

And in an e-mailed response, which Sullivan writes the “Anderson Cooper 360″ anchor gave him permission to post, Cooper writes that he’s thought about the topic over the years, and has decided to be clear about the fact that he’s gay.

Cooper says he refrained from being so straightforward in the past because he was trying “to maintain some level of privacy in my life,” for both personal and professional reasons.

“As long as a journalist shows fairness and honesty in his or her work, their private life shouldn’t matter,” Cooper writes. “I’ve stuck to those principles for my entire professional career, even when I’ve been directly asked ‘the gay question,’ which happens occasionally.”

Recently, however, Cooper says he’s been reminded “that … the tide of history only advances when people make themselves fully visible. There continue to be far too many incidences of bullying of young people, as well as discrimination and violence against people of all ages, based on their sexual orientation, and I believe there is value in making clear where I stand.”

He said he wasn’t comfortable with the assumption by some that because he wasn’t speaking about his sexuality, he was trying to hide something – an impression that he finds “distressing because it is simply not true.”

And so, for the record, Cooper writes: “The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.”

He adds that he’s always been this open with family, friends and colleagues. “In a perfect world, I don’t think it’s anyone else’s business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted,” Cooper says.

“The ability to love another person is one of God’s greatest gifts, and I thank God every day for enabling me to give and share love with the people in my life,” Cooper says in closing. “I still consider myself a reserved person and I hope this doesn’t mean an end to a small amount of personal space. But I do think visibility is important, more important than preserving my reporter’s shield of privacy.”

WHERE THE HELL ARE THIS GIRL’S FRIENDS? NOT SEXY AT ALL!!

I don’t even have any words to describe this picture. Let’s start from her house. Are all the mirrors shattered in her house? Moving beyond the house, where are her friends? Can they not tell her ridiculous she looks in that thing. Maybe they lied and told her that she looks hot! Sometimes you just look, shake your head and just wonder what the world is coming to.

FORMER NFL PLAYER, WADE DAVIS COMES OUT AS BEING GAY

Wade Davis works at the Hetrick-Martin Institute, which serves lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning youth in New York.

If it seems like a unique occupation for a former NFL player, it probably is … especially since Davis is one of those rare ex-players who’s come out of the closet.

The former cornerback’s name isn’t a well-known one, but Davis did attend training camps and even played in preseason games as a member of the Tennessee Titans, Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins from 2000 to 2003. He never stuck on a regular-season roster but did earn stints in NFL Europe with the Berlin Thunder and Barcelona Dragons.

In interviews with OutSports and SBNation, Davis, 34, talked about the challenges of being closeted in an NFL locker room.

“I think subconsciously, I understood that being gay — the way I was raised — was wrong, and there was no way that my family, at least in my mind, would accept me,” Davis told SBNation’s Amy Nelson. “And also that my football family would (not) accept me just because of the perception of being gay meant that you’re less masculine.”

That meant holding himself back personally even as he grew close to heterosexual teammates like the Titans’ Jevon Kearseand Samari Rolle.

“You just want to be one of the guys, and you don’t want to lose that sense of family,” Davis told OutSports. “Your biggest fear is that you’ll lose that camaraderie and family. I think about how close I was with Jevon and Samari. It’s not like they’d like me less, it’s that they have to protect their own brand.”

MORE:  Are NFL locker rooms ready to welcome gay players?

Kearse recently showed support to gay athletes in a separate interview with OutSports and suggested the NFL might be ready to accept homosexual players in the locker room.

But Davis, who also now does campaign work for President Obama, never felt comfortable treading on what’s essentially been taboo ground in professional team sports, at least for active players. He was even advised to avoid another unidentified player on the Titans who was labeled as “different” with the thought that such an association would jeopardize Davis’ ability to make the team.

“There was a part of me that was a little relieved because, when I knew football was over, my life would begin,” Davis said to OutSports. “I had this football life, but I didn’t have another life away from that. Most of the guys had a family and a wife, but I had football and nothing else.”

He says he first realized he was gay in 11th grade.

“I can remember being in gym class and having the desire to look at a boy in a way that I should look at girls,” he told SBNation.

If that sounds like a red flag to players who might be skittish with him in their inner circle, Davis says it absolutely shouldn’t be the case.

“At never a point (during) my NFL playing career did I take advantage of the privilege that I had to see a man naked. I never even remotely got aroused in the locker room. It’s a place where those guys are your family, and the last thing that you want to do is make anyone in your family feel uncomfortable. It’s not even a thought,” he said.

“I think the players have to understand that there’s nothing that’s gonna happen.”

What hasn’t happened so far is a pro player in a major North American pro league to reveal he’s gay during his career. And even Davis admits that might fall to a star player rather than a fringe one like he was even though he hopes someone steps out in the near future.

“I’m gonna be flat-out honest with you, it probably shouldn’t (be a reserve player) if he wants to keep his job,” he said. “If he’s the 53rd man on the roster, if he’s a free agent who’s fighting for a job, maybe he shouldn’t. I would hope that he would.”

Is such a courageous step in the offing?

“I can’t say it’s in the next five or 10 years, but I definitely think it’s on the horizon,” says Davis, who came out himself only recently.

“I started to realize that, ‘You know what? There’s an opportunity here for me to really make and affect change — not only with myself but with the world.’ ”

SYRIA KICKS OUT UNITED STATES AND OTHER DIPLOMATS

Syria kicked out envoys from Turkey and 10 Western countries, including the U.S. and the U.K., in retaliation for the expulsion of its diplomats in the aftermath of the Houla massacre.

Diplomats from Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland were also expelled, the state-run SANA news agency said today, citing an unidentified Foreign Ministry official who said the action was in accordance with “the principle of reciprocity.”

The expulsion of Syrian diplomats from the U.S. and other Western nations came after 108 people, including 49 children, were killed in Houla. The massacre was one of the worst atrocities in the 15-month uprising against President Bashar al- Assad’s government. The United Nations Human Rights Council said it was the work of “pro-regime elements,” while Syrian officials have blamed the killings on “terrorist” groups.

As many as 10,000 people have been killed since the unrest in Syria began in March 2011, according to UN estimates. At least 24 people were slain today across the country, the Local Coordination Committees in Syria said in an e-mail.

The U.S. suspended embassy operations in Damascus and recalled Ambassador Robert Ford and the rest of its staff in February. Several European Union embassies, including the German and French missions, have closed down.

Lose Hope

A cease-fire brokered by UN envoy Kofi Annan in April has failed to stop the bloodshed. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said today he is starting to lose hope the plan can succeed. He urged Russia, which has protected the Assad regime against tougher UN sanctions, to change its position on the Syrian crisis to avoid harming its relations with Arab nations.

Syria agreed today to permit UN aid workers into Dara’a, Homs, Deir al-Zour and Idlib, which are among the areas that have seen the most fighting, according to John Ging, director of operations for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva.

“There is now agreement with the Syrian government on the scale, scope and modality for humanitarian response,” Ging told journalists in Geneva today. “Whether this is a breakthrough or not will be evident in the coming days or weeks and it will be measured not in rhetoric, not in agreements, but in action on the ground.”

FIRST SERENA, NOW BIG SISTER VENUS WILLIAMS OUT AT THE FRENCH OPEN

Nooooooo!!! First, it was Serena who lost a few days ago in the first round of the French Open Tennis tournament, now, big sister Venus is out as well. This sucks…for me anyway.

Read more:

Venus out of Paris, into London: With Venus Williams’ 6-2, 6-3 second-round loss to Agnieszka Radwanska on Wednesday and her sister Serena’s historic first-round losson Tuesday, the 2012 French Open marks the earliest exit by the Williams sisters at a Grand Slam tournament. If Serena’s defeat was bathed in drama and struggle, Venus’ exit was a remarkably quiet one. Radwanska, who was on her game, hit a mere six unforced errors and moved exceptionally well. This was one-way traffic from the start and an impressive statement from Radwanska, who has a tough but makeable draw to the semifinals. I’ve never been convinced of her clay bona fides, but if she makes it deep into the second week, consider me convinced.

The good news for Venus is that her first-round win virtually assures her a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. She should be ranked within the top 50 when the rankings cut-off kicks in after the French Open, which is more than enough to earn her place. She’s made it clear that the only reason she came back so early from her autoimmune disorder was to try to qualify for the London Olympics.

Stephens continues her rise: Sloane Stephens was the only American to win on Wednesday. Yes, that’s a bit misleading — she defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands, so obviously there was going to be a U.S. victor either way. But Stephens is into the third round of a major for the second time in her young career. The 19-year-old has a great opportunity to do even better — and, with a little help, perhaps make the Olympic team, too. Stephens next faces Mathilde Johansson, a Frenchwoman ranked No. 93, which is a very winnable match for her.

BRIAN BANKS, CALIFORNIA BLACK MALE’S RAPE CONVICTION THROWN OUT

I’m so tired of seeing stories like these. We say that we live in a color blind world, but that is so far from the truth. A girl falsely accused this black man of rape and he got sent to prison for a crime he did not commit. While in prison, his accuser was awarded an over $1 million civil settlement. How crazy is this?! Read more

(CNN) — Brian Banks was on “Cloud 10″ Friday, the first full day of the rest of his life, after he was exonerated of a rape he did not commit.

“Today, it started to sink in a little more,” Banks told CNN’s Ashleigh Banfield. “I am overwhelmed. I feel great.”

At age 17, fearing a potentially long sentence, the college football prospect followed the advice of his attorney and pleaded no contest to assaulting a Long Beach, California, high school classmate in 2002.

Banks maintained his innocence throughout nearly six years of imprisonment, subsequent probation and registration as a sex offender.

The case took an incredible twist when the alleged victim sent a Facebook friend request to Banks in early 2011.

According to the California Innocence Project, the woman later admitted that Banks had not kidnapped or raped her during a consensual encounter at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, where Banks was a middle linebacker with a scholarship offer from the University of Southern California.

An emotional Banks, 26, lowered his head and fought back tears Thursday when prosecutors said they were moving to have the conviction dismissed.

“We do not believe Mr. Banks did the crime he pled guilty to,” Deputy District Attorney Brentford Ferreira said after court. “Justice has been served.”

A judge concurred and tossed the conviction.

Rape conviction overturned

“I was overcome with relief but reminded of the pain and suffering I went through in prison and parole,” Banks said. “All the false accusations against me.”

Banks put bitterness aside, though, expressing no interest in taking legal action against the woman who recanted.

“For me, I just want to be positive. I want to be in a better position than what I was yesterday,” Banks said. “The only way that can happen is by eliminating any negative ill will or feelings toward anyone.”

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Friday that it is not currently involved in any investigation of the woman.

“Our standard is beyond a reasonable doubt,” spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said, referring further questions to Long Beach police.

Police spokeswoman Lisa Massacani said Friday that there was no current investigation.

According to CNN Los Angeles affiliate KTLA, the accuser won a $1.5 million settlement in a civil suit against the Long Beach Unified School District. She claimed that the school’s lax security provided an unsafe environment that led to the alleged rape.

It was not clear whether the school district will try to recoup any of the settlement. A message seeking comment was not immediately returned.

The California Innocence Project took up Banks’ case and went to court on his behalf, saying he and the woman never had sexual intercourse. The alleged victim expressed concern about having to return money she received in the civil suit, the group said.

The group’s director, Justin Brooks, said the Banks case is not uncommon. “Plea bargains have become the 95% solution.”

“Brian has learned that anger is going to eat you up,” Brooks said. “If we hadn’t gotten that recantation, Brian would have gone through this the rest of his life.”

Although he did not have the opportunity to play college football, Banks maintains a dream of playing for the National Football League.

“I’m hoping to draw the attention of some team that takes interest in my story, takes interest in my hard work and gives me an opportunity,” he told KTLA.

THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL

“I believe that love that is true and real creates a respit from death. All cowardice comes from not loving or not loving well, which is the same thing. And when the man who is brave and true looks death sqaurely in the face, like some Rhino hunters I know or Belmonte, who is  truly brave, it is because they love with sufficient passion to push death out of their minds until it returns as it does to all men. And then you must make make really good love again”

The quote above is from the film ‘Midnight in Paris’ by Woody Allen. I came home early yesterday evening because I injured my right hand while sparring yesterday. I sprained the knuckle on the middle finger of my right hand as I threw a punch. I felt it happen, but continued for a few more rounds and even did a few rounds of drills. The fact that it happened to my middle finger made me happy because it meant that I landed the punch correctly.  When I was finished and pulled my right glove off, my knuckle had swelled up to more than twice it’s normal size. This injury is very painful, but quite common for fighters. It’s hurts like hell to open my hand and typing this blog is extremely difficult, but I have to suck it up in order to remain consistent with my blog.

This leads me to the topic of my post today. My blog today is about consistency. Come what may, the key to success in any field is consistency. Due to the fact that my hand was injured yesterday, I decided to make it a movie night. I chose ‘Midnight in Paris’ by Woody Allen. I’m usually not an Owen Wilson fan, but he was perfect for this role. Watching him in this film made me feel as though I was watching a younger, better looking Woody Allen with all the characteristic neurosis to boot. Great casting! If there were a picture next to the definition of consistency in the dictionary, Woody Allen’s would be it. When you watch a Woody Allen film, you are guaranteed an amazing story, a great cast and beautiful shots in each and every scene. He can shoot a film in London, on a dark, dreary winter day, and make it look beautiful. I have seen several Allen films and I’m yet to be disappointed. THAT MY DEAR FRIENDS, IS CONSISTENCY. I had visited Paris a few years ago and was not a big fan, but the color Woody Allen created with ’Midnight in Paris’ was so beautiful that I wanted to go back Paris.

I work hard to maintain a similar level of consistency with everything I do, be it blogging, staying in shape as a male model and for life in general, and boxing. This is the only way to truly be the best. STAY CONSISTENT MY FRIENDS!!!

YOU CAN’T GET ME…AT LEAST NOT TODAY

My younger brother, Maduka and I did so much running around today in preparation for my brother’s funeral. I didn’t realize how much work goes into planning a funeral. Due to the fact that most of us only see the final day of the process, its hard to imagine all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. There are so many details to take into consideration before actually locking down a date. All the running around including phone calls and emails takes its toll especially when you’re planning it for a loved one. I needed to workout to release.

As I embarked on a long walk to gym while listening to Lil Wayne’s “I am not a Human”, thoughts of my own mortality dominated my mind. I always considered myself to be a machine. I could work through anything. I am not  afraid of death itself.  I have readied myself for it every time I walked into the ring. My only concern is for the people that I would leave behind. What would be my legacy? Would I have made the world a better place? My parents would be devastated if they were to lose another son.

For that reason, death will not get me…at least not now!!

When I got to the gym, it was closed. Yesterday, May 1st, was a public holiday or as it is called in London, a bank holiday. I guess gyms don’t open on holidays here. I was not going to be stopped though. I walked back to my brother’s house. I had pull out  his weight set from way, way back-in-the-day from the shed in the backyard of his house. The rusty barbell and weights build character!! Check out the video of my workout at the bottom of the page. I jumped rope to warm up and then I did 10 sets of  bench press/bent-over row/v-ups circuit. I know…I know…I’ve been doing a lot of upper body work lately. That’s because that is my comfort training. Just like some people for comfort, I train my upper body for comfort.

That workout was brutal!! I felt much better at the end of the workout. I promise to do a hard leg workout tomorrow.
