GENDER DOUBLE STANDARD WHEN TEACHERS SEXUALLY ABUSE BOYS

When male teachers sext or have sex with their students, nobody laughs. When female teachers do this, the titters don’t stop. Fictional examples: Skins, Big Love, and many more. Real-life example: this wink-wink blog post about Gabriela Compton, a 21-year-old (former) middle-school teacher’s aide in Phoenix, Arizona.

Compton sent a 14-year-old boy at her school a picture of herself topless. He sexted back a photo of a penis he’d found on the Internet. A few sexts later, Compton found herself accused of having sex with the boy in the back of her van. A 13-year-old went to the police and said he’d sexted with Compton, too, and she reportedly admitted to that and the sex, too. She was charged with three counts of sexual abuse, three counts of sexual abuse with a minor, and one other related count. Altogether the charges carried a maximum sentence of 39 years in prison. In March, she pled guilty to the sexual abuse counts—and got a sentence of lifetime probation. She’ll have to register as a sex offender, but she won’t go to prison.

As law professor and sentencing guru Doug Berman points out, it is not really possible to imagine a male teacher getting off so lightly for having sex with a 14-year-old girl. Is Compton’s light sentence typical? Can it be justified?

The answer to the first question is mostly no: Compton’s wrist slap is in important ways an outlier. My colleague Will Saletan has been here before me. A teacher named Beth Geisel pled guilty to molesting a student in 2006, prompting CNN’s Nancy Grace to ask: “Why is it, when a man rapes a little girl, he goes to jail, which I’m all for, by the way, but when a woman rapes a boy, she had a breakdown?” Saletan pointed out a 1991 study that found little difference in the likelihood that male and female sex offenders would go to prison. And he updated the numbers with his own informal survey of 37 inmates who’d recently been sentenced. What was different was how long they would remain incarcerated: Will found that the men were in prison for an average of 11 years, while the women were there for less than two. But the women were also far less likely to have molested multiple children or to have molested kids under the age of 16. That is where Compton is in unusual and unfortunate territory. Since she was accused of having sex with a 14-year-old and sexting him and a 13-year-old, she’s not a Notes on a Scandal gal having sex with an older teen. She was doing something ickier.

Is her sentence of probation nonetheless justified because women molesting boys is just different than men molesting girls? There are salient differences between men and women when it comes to sex offenses. For starters, men are far more likely to commit sexual assault than women are, accounting for 96 percent of the total. They are also rearrested much more frequently.

The women who perpetrate this misconduct not surprisingly have serious problems. Like the men, they have poor coping skills and trouble showing empathy. This report by the Center for Sex Offender Management breaks female sex offenders into three types, based on clinical observations. The first group were coerced by men into abusing children, even their own. The second were themselves victims of incest or other sexual abuse—this kind of history is far more likely for women sex offenders than for men, and the women in this category also tend to victimize young children in their own families. The third type, labeled “teacher/lover,” sounds more like Gabriela Compton. They were “often struggling with peer relationships, seemed to regress and perceive themselves as having romantic or sexually mentoring ‘relationships’ with under-aged adolescent victims of their sexual preference, and, therefore, did not consider their acts to be criminal in nature.”

All the joking assumes that 13- and 14-year-old boys just want to have sex, but the law provides that it is in fact criminal behavior for an adult, male or female. Saletan has written about how the age of consent varies by time and place. The research on the cognitive ability and psychosocial maturity of teenagers shows (not surprisingly) that both tend to rise as they get older. Did the student who sent Compton Internet photos of a penis understand what he was getting into? What about the 13-year-old who went to the cops—does that suggest that something was off here, and that it makes sense to view the pairing of a young teenager and an adult as a crime, no matter who is which gender?

I’d rather the law err on the side of caution and uniformity here. And I can’t really get my mind around probation for a woman who was facing nearly four decades in prison, even if it is probation for life that includes sex-offender registration. Thirteen-year-old boys should be shielded from predatory adults the same way girls are. If they don’t think they want the shield, well, maybe they don’t know what’s good for them.

WALK A MILE IN THEIR SHOES

Sometimes I lay in bed at night thinking about my future and where I would like my life to go. All this hustle and bustle, everyday. What does it all mean? Am I doing what I was put on earth to do? What is my mission in this world? Will I be a good father? If I have children, will I be able to protect them and give them a great life? Will they be proud of me? Did I make the best of today? Did I squeeze every last drop of life-juice, out of today? I think about all this, I can’t sleep, so I get up. I walk over to my computer to do some research and write. Writing usually calms me down. It helps me get the energy out. I look through the internet for topics and ideas and then I see a picture such as this one and it puts everything in perspective.

I’ve been so blessed. I have achieved so much, but yet I worry. I look at the picture to the left and take deep breath and feel quite stupid about my state of mind. It doesn’t matter.None of it does. My focus should be on allowing life to flow through me and affect others, making the world a better place.

I hope it does the same for you

WHAT THE HELL IS AN I.P.O.? WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

All over the world, we kept hearing news about Facebook going public. We heard about stocks, shares, markets, public this and public that,… and we heard about… IPO’s. What the hell is an IPO? What does all this jargon mean? Ohhhhh….Mark Zuckerberg is now worth $19.18 Billion after selling 503.6 shares at Facebook’s asking price of $38. Whaaaaaaaat!!! Well i got to the bottom of it! I did a lot of research on this and I will break it all down for you.

What is an IPO?

An IPO is the Initial Public Offering is the first time that a company’s shares are traded on a public market

Privately Owned companies have full control over their shares and are not required to disclose key financial information to the public. On the other hand, shares of publicly traded companies can be owned by anyone. Companies must answer to their shareholders and face increased regulatory scrutiny.

Why Would a company go public?

A company goes public because there is only so much money a company can raise on its own. The company therefore will go public in order to raise money that it needs to grow and  achieve it future goals. The company decides how much money it needs to achieve its future goals, their team of underwriters then helps them determine a realistic amount they can charge for each individual stock in order to reach the amount of money they need to reach their growth goal.

Why have an IPO?

An IPO brings profits to initial investors and employees and raises capital for the company.
  • Investors: Initial investors can make large profits while selling the shares they obtained early on at much cheaper prices
  • Employees: In the early stages of most companies, employees are compensated with equity (shares of the company). Founders and employees can now cash in on their shares
  • Company: The company raises capital to continue growing and expanding. It also opens doors to new investors.

How does an IPO work?

A company follows several steps in order to have an IPO.
  1. File S-1: The company must first file an S-1 form with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which includes basic business and financial records
  2. Underwriters (The Team): A group of investment bankers are selected to act as underwriters (people who vouch for the company), who help in raising capital from investors.
  3. Exchange: A public stock exchange such as the NASDAQ or NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) is selected, and a ticker symbol is chosen such as FB for Facebook and MSFT for Microsoft.
  4. Roadshow: The company and its underwriters make presentations to investors in major cities, seeking buyers for large blocks of shares.
  5. Preparation: Once the SEC has approved filing, the company and its underwriters set the opening price and numbers of shares that will be sold.
  6. Go Public: The investment capital is transferred to the company and investors get their shares. The next day, they begin selling those shares on the public market.

So, there you have it my friends. That is a little business blogging for you. I hope that this helped shed more light on all the news hitting all of us lately about our beloved Facebook. I know I learned a lot while doing the research for this post.

MISSISSIPPI HIGHWAY SHOOTER ARRESTED

Damn!!! Say it ain’t so! I just saw on the news that a suspect in the Mississippi highway shootings has been arrested. I am relieved that a serial killer has been caught and taken off the streets. I have to say that I was disappointed to find out that he is a young black man. As if we don’t have enough problems. Read the full story from CNN below.

(CNN) – Authorities have arrested a suspect in the case of an alleged police impersonator who is believed to have killed two motorists in Mississippi, the Tunica County Sherriff’s Office said.

James D. Willie, 28, of Sardis, Mississippi, was arrested and the 9mm handgun authorities say was used in two recent highway shootings was in his possession, the sheriff’s office said.

The arrest may put an end to a case that caused a massive manhunt by law enforcement and created panic and fear for many drivers throughout Mississippi.

“Hundreds of man hours have been devoted to tracking down and arresting this individual,” Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant said. “Public safety is of paramount concern to us. Just as a week ago, with the resolution of the kidnap/murder case in north Mississippi, again we see the effective results of a unified effort of several law enforcement agencies working together.”

Investigators with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation had raised the possibility that someone posing as a police officer was to blame for the shooting deaths of 74-year-old Tom Schlender and 48-year-old Lori Anne Carswell, which happened 55 miles apart in northwest Mississippi.

Willie was arrested Tuesday on an unrelated offense. Authorities found the suspect with a woman who claimed that he raped her.

He was arrested, and the semiautomatic Ruger handgun he had was also taken into custody.

“It was determined after testing by state Crime Lab scientists, the weapon matched the weapon used in two murders in northwest Mississippi last week,” a Tunica County Sherriff’s Office statement said.

The news of this arrest comes a day after authorities said they were questioning a different suspect in the case.

Authorities said a different man was picked up after stopping two drivers Wednesday night. That man, identified as James Lucas, 45, of Yazoo City, was driving a blue Mercury Marquis that used to be a police car and still had flashing blue lights behind its grille, Humphreys County Sheriff Investigator Sam Dobbins said.

Dobbins said investigators searched Lucas’ home and found handcuffs and fake badges.

Early Friday, it was unclear what, if any, connection Lucas had to the case.

DONNA SUMMER DISCO DIVA DEAD AT 63

Legendary disco diva Donna Summer has died, a spokesman confirmed to  TheWrap.

The “Hot Stuff” and “Last Dance” singer was 63.

No cause of death was given, but TMZ reports Summer had been battling  cancer.

In a statement, Summer’s family praise the singer’s religious faith.

“While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary  life and her continued legacy,” the statement reads. “Words truly can’t express  how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive  time.”

Bing: Listen to Donna Summer’s biggest hits

Summer’s soaring mezzo-soprano voice and catchy lyrics provided the  soundtrack to the 1970s, making it nearly impossible to think of many of that  decade’s cultural touchstones, be they bellbottoms or disco balls, without  calling to mind her hit singles.

Among the hits that helped cement Summer’s legacy were “She Works Hard for  the Money,” “Bad Girls” and “Dim All the Lights.” She would earn five  Grammy awards and 17 nominations over the course of her career.

In a 2003 interview with The New York Times, Summer said she felt that  her propulsive, candy-coated dance numbers captured the national zeitgeist of  the 1970s and helped people turn the page on the chaotic social upheaval of the  previous decade.

“In that period people were in a dance mood,” Summer said. “They wanted to be  lifted up, they wanted to have fun, they didn’t want to think.”

Photos: In Memoriam: Donna Summer

”You were coming out of the Vietnam war, the 60′s , the protest era, and I  was coming out of it as well,” she added. ”I think people were just in a  different mindset. When dance music came out, with that beat and that movement,  it was a switch.”

Yet while Summer may have downplayed her political significance, one group  who embraced her music was the gay community. Emboldened by the Stonewall Riots,  Summer’s anthems of empowerment struck a chord with a group that was  beginning to agitate for greater political rights and freedoms.

That relationship endured throughout her career, but it did undergo  significant strain after reports surfaced that Summer made anti-gay remarks  about AIDS victims in the mid-1980s and called the disease divine  retribution.

She claimed that she never made the statements and would later sue New York  magazine in 1991 for libel when it reprinted the allegations.

In a 1989 letter to an AIDS activist group, Summer wrote, “I was unknowingly  protected by those around me from the bad press and hate letters. … If I have  caused you pain, forgive me.”

Though Summer and disco were nearly interchangeable, she proved herself to be  a musical chameleon, one who survived the end of the Studio 54 era and continued  to produce chart-topping songs into the 1980s and beyond.

Over the ensuing three decades, Summer branched into new genres, such as new  wave, with her 1980 album “The Wanderer”; swing on her poorly received 1991  album “Mistaken Identity”; and gospel with her 1994 holiday album “Christmas  Spirit.”

The singer is survived by her husband, singer and producer Bruce Sudano;  their daughters, Brooklyn and Amanda; and Summer’s daughter, Mimi, from a  previous marriage.

COME ON MAN! VERIZON DITCHES IT’S UNLIMITED DATA PLAN

Verizon has decided to throw their loyal customers under the bus in order to make a boat load of money!! Come on man!!! Do you guys not make enough money? As if we our cell phone bills are not high enough, Verizon is now getting rid of it’s unlimited data plan. Verizon is already not offering the unlimited data plan to new customers, but they now plan to end it for customers who were ‘grandfathered’ into the plan.

Verizon Wireless is planning this summer to begin forcing smartphone customers with unlimited data plans to switch to tiered plans when they upgrade, the company’s chief financial officer told Wall Street analysts on Wednesday.

At the JP Morgan Technology, Media and Telecom conference in Boston, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said the company will unveil a “data share” pricing model by mid-summer, which will give customers the ability to buy an allotment of data that can be used across multiple devices linked to the same account.

As that plan rolls out, Verizon (VZ,Fortune 500) will discontinue its practice of allowing customers who have legacy unlimited data plans to keep those plans when they buy a new smartphone. Verizon stopped allowing new customers to buy unlimited data plans a year ago.

“As you come through an upgrade cycle and you upgrade in the future, you will have to go onto the data share plan,” Shammo said, “[We're] moving away from, if you will, the unlimited world and moving everybody into a tiered structure data share-type plan.”

The CFO emphasized that the plan is “paper, not actual.” A Verizon Wireless spokesman declined to comment on issue.

AT&T (TFortune 500) Wireless, which led the industry with the first tiered data plans, continues to allow customers with legacy unlimited plans to keep that service when they upgrade. Sprint (SFortune 500) remains the only national carrier that offers new customers an unlimited data plan.

The idea behind Verizon’s change in strategy, Shammo said, is to increase the company’s revenue at a time when the cell phone market is already saturated with customers and voice minutes are dropping, sending average revenue per smartphone user down $10 over the past two years.

As attracting new customers grows more difficult, finding new ways to increase revenue from the customers Verizon already has is becoming the company’s top priority.

Though Verizon’s lowest, 2 gigabyte-per-month tier currently costs $30 — the same price as its legacy unlimited offering — the company knows that data usage is increasing, particularly as 4G-LTE networks make possiblehuge HD video downloads and machine-to-machine communications.

As customers increase their data usage on their devices, the company thinks they’ll move to higher and pricier tiers.

Or, in CFO-ese: “With the construct that we have dealt with around data share and where we see consumption of LTE going, when you put the combination of them together, we are fairly confident that we will see people start to uptake in the tiers, which is really where we will get the revenue accretion in the future.”

That’s how Shammo put it in his JP Morgan talk. Translation: You’re going to suck down more data and pay Verizon more for that privilege.

Dragging existing unlimited customers away from their unlimited data plans isn’t the only way Verizon is upping its take. The company recentlyimposed a $30 “upgrade fee” on customers, which Shammo said has been a success.

“We are really not seeing any impact from a customer base from that fee, so that was the right thing to do,” he said. To top of page

CHUCK BROWN DIES: THE GODFATHER OF GO-GO WAS 75

Pulled from the Washington Post By ,

Chuck Brown, the gravelly voiced bandleader who capitalized on funk’s percussive pulse to create go-go, the genre of music that has soundtracked life in black Washington for more than three decades, died May 16 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He was 75.The death, from complications from sepsis, was confirmed by his manager, Tom Goldfogle.Mr. Brown had been hospitalized for pneumonia.

Known as the “Godfather of Go-Go,” the performer, singer, guitarist and songwriter developed his commanding brand of funk in the mid-1970s to compete with the dominance of disco.

Like a DJ blending records, Mr. Brown used nonstop percussion to stitch songs together and keep the crowd on the dance floor, resulting in marathon performances that went deep into the night. Mr. Brown said the style got its name because “the music just goes and goes.”

In addition to being go-go’s principal architect, Mr. Brown remained the genre’s most charismatic figure. On stage, his spirited call-and-response routines became a hallmark of the music, reinforcing a sense of community that allowed the scene to thrive. As go-go became a point of pride for black Washingtonians, Mr. Brown became one of the city’s most recognizable figures.

“No single type of music has been more identified with Washington than go-go, and no one has loomed so large within it as Chuck Brown,” former Washington Post pop music critic Richard Harrington wrote in 2001.

Mr. Brown’s creation, however, failed to have the same impact outside of the Beltway. The birth of go-go doubled as the high-water mark of Mr. Brown’s national career. With his group the Soul Searchers, his signature hit “Bustin’ Loose” not only minted the go-go sound, it spent four weeks atop the R&B singles chart in 1978.

“Bustin’ Loose” was “the one record I had so much confidence in,” Mr. Brown told The Post in 2001. “I messed with it for two years, wrote a hundred lines of lyrics and only ended up using two lines. . . . It was the only time in my career that I felt like it’s going to be a hit.”

It was Mr. Brown’s biggest single, but throughout the 1980s “We Need Some Money,” “Go-Go Swing” and “Run Joe” became local anthems, reinforced by radio support and the grueling performance schedule that put Mr. Brown on area stages six nights a week.

While rap music exploded across the country, go-go dominated young black Washington, with groups including Trouble Funk, Rare Essence and Experience Unlimited (also known as E.U.) following in Mr. Brown’s footsteps.

Mr. Brown performed less frequently in his final years but still took the stage regularly. He would often comment on his golden years in rhyme.

“I’m not retired because I’m not tired. I’m still getting hired, and I’m still inspired,” he said in 2006. “As long as I can walk up on that stage, I want to make people happy. I want to make people dance.”

Charles Louis Brown was born in Gaston, N.C., on Aug. 22, 1936. He never knew his father, Albert Louis Moody, a Marine. He took the surname of his mother, Lyla Louise Brown, a housekeeper who raised her several children in poverty.

VIDEO OF GIRL CONSOLING HER SOCCER PLAYER DAD IS THE CUTEST…TOUCHING

This is the cutest video ever. This video clearly shows how important it is, for fathers to stay present in their daughter’s lives.

De Graafschap midfielder Rogier Meijer, whose Dutch soccer squad was relegated from the Eredivisie following a 1-1 draw with FC Den Bosch on Sunday. But shining a light in the gloom was his daughter, who made her way onto the pitch to console her dad in the most adorable way possible. Thank heaven, for little girls.

FIRST AMERICAN FEMALE BOXER QUALIFIES FOR LONDON OLYMPICS 2012

Female boxing will be introduced to the Olympic games for the first time ever at the London 2012 Olympics. I always why that was? I guess many people do not want to see women fighting. There are so many great female fighters in the world and I’m happy that these girls will be able to showcase their skills on the world’s largest stage.

Flyweight Marlen Esparza has become the first American female boxer to qualify for the London Olympics. Esparza secured her birth by beating Luu Thi Duyen of Vietnam in the second round of the Women’s World Championships in Qinhuangdao, China, on Tuesday. The boxer from Houston took a 28-13 decision in the three-round bout.

U.S. lightweight Quanitta Underwood’s hopes of qualifying for the Olympics at the tournament ended when she lost 26-25 to Norway’s Ingrid Egner in a third-round bout Tuesday.

The Seattle fighter’s hopes of competing in London now depend on an international commission that will select the additional lightweight from the Americas to compete in the Games.

BASKETBALL WIVES HAVE DONE IT – WILL YOU SELL YOUR SOUL FOR FAME?

Will you sell your soul for fame? That is my question of the day. These grown women from Basketball Wives have sold their souls for fame. I’ve always believed in hustling hard and doing what it takes to succeed. There is a fine line though. These women on Basketball wives have trampled all over that line. One so many levels, the behavior of these women shows that they are morally bankrupt. We all owe it to ourselves to upload a certain level behavior. All these women have children. Most of them have daughters. To watch 40 year old black women act the damn fool on TV is embarrassing. Black women are already viewed as ghetto,  aggressive and disloyal. Basketball Wives puts these black women on display and further cement the view of black women.

How do they think their daughters feel watching them fight, throw drinks on each other and scream and yell? How do they think that impressionable young girls see them? They must not care about that. They don’t care about the younger generation coming up behind them. Many young girls watch this stuff and think that it’s the way to behave. It is not.

It is not worth it to sell your soul for anything. Definitely not for fame. Fame will go away and you still have yourself to look at.

MANNY PACQUIAO, WORLD CHAMPION BOXER, REBUKES OBAMA’S SUPPORT FOR GAY MARRIAGE

I think that there is a problem when a man concerns themselves with what another man is doing in the bedroom. I have always been a fan of world champion boxer Manny Pacquaio. I think Manny is a great fighter. He has risen through several weight classes, winning world championship belts, all the way up. His fast, hard punching, forward marching style is always entertaining to watch. I disagree with Manny Pacquiao on this. The foundation of Christaian belief and indeed any belief at all, is to love thy neighbor.

If you missed it, Pacquiao told the National Conservative Examiner that he doesn’t agree with the president. He then cited Leviticus 20:13, telling the publication that “if a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads”

Many Christians feel the same way about same sex marriage that Manny feels, but that does not go along with love thy neighbor. I was raised very strict catholic and read the Bible extensively. As far as I can remember, I don’t remember anywhere in the Bible where Jesus talks about gay people or his lack of support for it.

I think there’s a problem when another man begins to concern themselves with what another man does in the bedroom.

CNN DOESN’T GET IT!! NEW VIDEO – COPS DON’T TREAT BLACK PEOPLE AND WHITE PEOPLE THE SAME WAY

CHECK OUT THE VIDEO BELOW!!!!

As much as I respect CNN’s reporting of news all over the world, they are wrong here. I just saw a news segment on CNN about someone killing drivers along Mississippi highways. The CNN specialist that was brought on to talk about the case advised viewers that if a cop is pulling you over, the best thing to do is to turn on you hazard lights, drive slowly, and pull into a well lit, public place. This will not work for black people…

CHECK OUT THE VIDEO BELOW!!!

My issue with this is that in the south and actually in many parts of the country, if a cop is attempting to pull over a black person and do not stop immediately, the cops usually get pissed and you run the risk of getting shot. The same advice was given in Cincinnati,Ohio and a man was shot in White Castle, an extremely public place. For those who don’t know what White Castle is, it is fast food chain, just like McDonalads.

What do you think of this advice?

NIGERIAN ARRESTED FOR STEALING A DEAD MAN’S IDENTITY FOR SECURITY JOB IN THE USA

Who is at fault here? The man who committed the crime or the department that did not catch it? How did this happen? I would assume that in order to obtain job, a rigorous background check would be carried out. This man, BIMBO OLUMUYIWA OYEWOLE was arrested for using the identity of a dead man, JERRY THOMAS to obtain a job as a top security officer at the international airport in Newark,  New Jersey.

This security breach of the highest order was uncovered at Newark Liberty Airport, NEW JERSEY on Monday. I live in New York and have flown out of this airport several times. How secure does news like this make me feel? If this man could do this, anyone can do it. Get it….ANYONE!!!

BIMBO OLUMUYIWA OYEWOLE is a 54- year-old illegal immigrant from NIGERIA. His co-workers claimed they knew him as Jerry Thomas. During investigation, it was uncovered that Bimbo, somehow obtained the birth certificate and Social Security number of a man murdered in Queens in 1992. He then used them to obtain a New Jersey State driver’s license, a state security guard license, airport ID Card and credit cards. While working as a security official in Newark, Bimbo had access to the tarmac and passenger planes without ever being detected, officials said.

At the time of his arrest he supervised 30 other guards. CHA CHING!! “THE AVENGERS” TOPS $1 BILLION AT THE BOX OFFICE

In just 19 days, flying faster the speed of a speeding bullet,  ”The Avengers”  has reached the billion-dollar mark at the box office. The superhero blockbuster took in $103.2 million to lead for a second-straight weekend, raising its domestic total to $373.2 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The Avengers” was the first movie ever to pull in more than $100 million domestically in its second weekend, passing the previous best of $75.6 million for “Avatar.” The film also topped $300 million domestically Saturday after just nine days in release, beating the previous record set by “The Dark Knight,” which hit that mark in 10 days.

Already the year’s biggest hit worldwide, “The Avengers” is on the verge of passing “The Hunger Games” at $386.9 million to become the top-grossing film domestically for 2012.

With $95.4 million more overseas, “The Avengers” lifted its international receipts to $628.9 million and a worldwide haul of just over $1 billion, only 19 days after it began rolling out in some markets.

“You never think that it can happen this quickly,” said Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney, whose Marvel Studios unit produced the ensemble film after a long buildup in its solo superhero outings. “You hope you can get to this day, and the fact that it is happening this early is a testament to a lot of work that went in on the Marvel side over the last six years to get us to a place where people wanted to see the Avengers assemble.”

Revenue for “The Avengers” was off just 50 percent from the film’s domestic debut of $207.4 million the previous weekend, a remarkable hold given how big it started.

OKORIE OKOROCHA, NIGERIAN LAWYER, TAKES ON BIG HOLLYWOOD AND JOHN TRAVOLTA

He is up against one of the most famous lawyers in the United States. Marty Singer has represented countless stars, including A-listers Bruce Willis, Jim Carrey, Celine Dion, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is the guy you go to if you need a good lawyer for the stars (and can afford one) although it is safe to say that he has never had a case quite like this one.

In fact Travolta’s lawyer is already threatening to counter-sue Okorie Okorocha and the two clients who raised the allegations against John for bringing (they say) phony allegations to court:

“The problem in America is anyone can sue anyone. However, in this case this unidentified plaintiff [John Doe] and his lawyer will regret they filed this fabricated suit. We intend to sue both of them for malicious prosecution.”

But Okorocha has come back swinging for the fences:

“If Marty Singer thinks he can sue me on the validity of Mr. Travolta’s denials, and if he wants to file the lawsuit now, I will give him a waiver allowing him to proceed with it at this stage of the case, even though under California law he has to wait until he wins the case, and that absolutely won’t be happening. It will never happen, he won’t win, so we might as well get it over with now. Bring it on.”

Bring it on, indeed. So who is this David among lawyers, Okorie Okorocha?

Biography: He is a sexual harassment and employment discrimination attorney located in Pasadena, California, which is located in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. He works on sexual discrimination cases and other matters for a law firm that he partners with his brother. You can find it through their Twitter page here. As you can see, both of them could benefit from a visit to a hair-club for men.

Although he takes sexual harassment cases such as the massage scandal, Okorocha is mainly known for expertise in drunk driving cases. He has taken many DUI cases to trial, and won them, and is in fact a member of the California DUI Lawyers Association and an expert witness on the subject. You can see him strutting his stuff in the video below.

Okorie Okorocha has a bachelor of arts degree in 1999 from California State University, Northridge campus and a law degree from Whittier College in 2002. Neither of these are top of the line, but who needs gravitas when you are willing to go tooth and nail with the elite lawyersin the country.

By the way, Okorie is studying to obtain a master’s degree in forensic science from the University of Florida. That must be an on-line program because he can’t very well attend classes in Florida when he is practicing law in California.

According to his public profile, which you can find here, Okorie has nine years of litigation experience and he mentions spending more time in the courtroom that most other lawyers. He bills himself as California’s “most aggressive and prolific trial lawyer.”

That doesn’t bode well for Travolta. Usually the Hollywood stars want these things to go away quickly and quietly.

I really love the photo of the dashing looking Mr. Okorocha and his brother sitting between three lawyerly women with their hands on him. These gals are the sweet part of his legal team, accomplished attorneys in their own right.

So that is what we know about the John Travolta massage scandal lawyer. He is up against a Hollywood bigshot with a bigshot attorney, but Okorie Okorocha and his team is not shrinking from the fight.

AFTER RED TAILS, GEORGE LUCAS DOES SOMETHING AWESOME….AGAIN

Just when you thought that George Lucas had done it all. He does it all over again. George Lucas is master of proving people wrong. He did it with Star Wars, which was so far ahead of it’s time that film bosses believed that it will fail. It did not. He then decided to make a film about the Tuskegee Airmen with an all black cast. Once again, the film suits told him that films with all black casts do not make money. George made the film with his own money and it made tons of money. You go George!!!!

Now George Lucas is ruffling feathers once again. George Lucas has long wanted to build a massive studio complex on his posh property near San Francisco, but has been foiled by his Marin County neighbors for 25 years, even as subdivisions have gone up around him. Now he’s fighting fire with fire, giving up on his dream and instead building low-income housing on the property. We know — it’s pretty sweet. In the exquisitely titled article, “George Lucas Does Something Likeable For a Change,” Peter Hall nails it: “If there’s one thing rich people will hate more than having movie magic made in their backyard, it’s poor people moving in.”

NEWSWEEK COVER DECLARES OBAMA ‘THE FIRST GAY PRESIDENT’

Four days after President Barack Obama affirmed his support of gay marriage on Good Morning America, the editors at Newsweek are ready to anoint him with a new title, “The First Gay President.”

At least, that’s what it will say on the cover of magazine’s May 21 issue, which is available on iPad today and will be on newsstands Monday.

The cover shows a close-up portrait of the president with a rainbow-colored halo over his head, the colors referencing symbols adopted by the LGBT movement. The cover advertises an upcoming piece by Newsweek writer Andrew Sullivan in support of Obama’s record with the gay community.

Newsweek has released this preview of the article:

It’s easy to write off President Obama’s announcement of his support for gay marriage as a political ploy during an election year. But don’t believe the cynics. Andrew Sullivan argues that this announcement has been in the making for years. “When you step back a little and assess the record of Obama on gay rights, you see, in fact, that this was not an aberration. It was an inevitable culmination of three years of work.” And President Obama has much in common with the gay community. “He had to discover his black identity and then reconcile it with his white family, just as gays discover their homosexual identity and then have to reconcile it with their heterosexual family,” Sullivan writes.

The move comes mere days after Newsweek’s competitor Time Magazine offered a controversial cover of their own, depicting a young mother breast feeding her 3-year-old boy. A Newsweek spokesman would later tell the New York Post that when their Editor-In-Chief Tina Brown saw the cover she responded, “Let the games begin.”

Newsweek’s cover may be designed to elicit the memory of another White House occupant with a not-so-fitting title. Supporters of then-President Bill Clinton dubbed him the “first black president” for his work with the African American community. The term was first used by author Toni Morrison in a 1998 issue of The New Yorker.

BARACK OBAMA HAS EIGHT BALLS!

Yes, BARACK OBAMA HAS EIGHT BALLS!! I know that that yesterday was Sunday, a day of worship. I know that yesterday was mother’s day, a day in the presence of mother. How dare I say the word “balls” in the presence of mother?! I also know that the title of this blog may ruffle some feathers because we just woke up from of day in church with mother. I know all that, but I can’t ignore that Barack Obama has eight big balls!!

Many people have balls, but very few have the number of balls needed to make the decision to support gay marriage. Why is this is such big deal, you may ask? The reason why this is such a big deal is the fact that Barack, The President of the United States, went against the beliefs of the Black Church. The Black Church is a major power player when it comes to the Black vote. The Black Churches control the Black Vote and the majority of the Black churches do not support gay marriage. I give him so much credit for stepping up and making the decision to change the thinking and beliefs of Black people in America. That is the what a leader does. That is what the leader of the free world is supposed to do….LEAD!!

Some people wonder if the black church will punish President Barack Obama for announcing support for same-sex marriage.

It’s so unfortunate,” says James Cone, author of “The Cross and the Lynching Tree.” “The literal approach to scripture was used to enslave black people,” he says. “I’ve said many times in black churches that the black church is on the wrong side of history on this. It’s so sad because they were on the right side of history in their own struggle.” Call it historical irony: Black church leaders arguing against same-sex marriage are making some of the same arguments that supporters of slavery made in the 18th and 19th centuries, some historians say. Both groups adopted a literal reading of the Bible to justify withholding basic rights from a particular group.

Opposition to gay rights is not the standard position of all black churches. Still, while several predominately white mainline denominations have officially accepted gays and lesbians in various forms, the vast majority of black churches still consider homosexuality a sin.

HOW DOES THIS PICTURE MAKE YOU FEEL?

How does this picture of the greatest fighter of all time, Muhammad Ali, make you feel? How does this quote make you feel? You’ll be amazed at the responses I got when I asked this question. Some people told me that it makes them tired just looking at the picture. Whaaaaaaaaaat? I couldn’t understand why anyone would say that, so I delved deeper. I then found out that when these people looked at this picture, they saw how much work and pain it would take to become a champion and it just made them tired. It made them exhausted. I’m learning not to judge, I don’t understand how anyone would not be motivated by this picture and story, but to each their own.

Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.

When I see this picture and the quote on it, it makes want to get up and do something. It doesn’t just make me want to get up and put forth the hardest work out ever; it inspires me to work hard at everything I do. I think about the fact that Muhammad Ali suffered so much in his life, physically and emotionally, to reach his goal of becoming the Greatest ever! To become the greatest ever at anything takes a great deal of sacrifice, suffering and pain. He gave up his championship belt because he didn’t believe in the Vietnam war. He was broke, but he seffered and rose again, to the top. Looking at this picture gives me hope in the future. Looking at this picture makes me fee that all my hard work will go in vain.

How does it make you feel?

MY MOM GAVE UP SO MUCH FOR ME: HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY MOM!!!

I woke up this morning in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was raining hard. I thought that our flight would be delayed because it was raining so hard. As I sat there, staring out of the windows, I thought of my mom. I didn’t go home for mother’s day because I had to attend a funeral in Ohio. I know that she would have wanted me there. I know that she would have loved to cook my favorite pounded yam and egusi soup for me. I felt badly about that.

My mom gave up so much for me. I was so sick for most of my childhood. I was in and out of hospitals for that time. She was always with me at home on in my hospital room. She put her career on hold in order to make sure that she spent time with me. She supported me. She inspired me. I get my strength from my mom. My mom is an independent, strong, hard working woman and I know that it must have been very hard for give up her career for me. That is pure, unadulterated LOVE!

I LOVE YOU MOM!! HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!!

THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD IS ON THEIR SHOULDERS!

I saw this cover of Newsweek magazine yesterday and thought that it was funny and scary at the same time. The baby looks so excited to enjoy his or her french fries…mmmmmm…tasty!! It looks like the baby is holding on to a check for 1 Million dollars!!

Even though the baby in this picture is white, blonde haired and blue eyed, this condition affects all of us. It affects Africans, Americans, Asians….every single one of us.

We have a social duty to educate each other. We have a duty to educate our children. This is a real problem for our generation. Together we can make a difference.

Lets do it

WHAT MAN CAN DO, WOMAN CAN DO BETTER: NIGERIAN WOMAN SETS WORLD RECORD IN HEROINE SWALLOW CAUGHT AT AIRPORT

THE DREAM OF MERCEDES, HOUSE IN LEKKI, OWAMBE PARTY IS OVER FOR BOLA!!

A Nigerian woman, Bola Adebisi, set an unenviable world record for amount of ingested heroin ever recovered when she tried to smuggle five pounds of heroin in 180 pellets into the U.S. The previous record, set by a Nigerian man, was four pounds of heroin ingested in 100 pellets.

Airport authorities at the Dulles International Airport, say that 52-year-old Bola Adebisi ingested an incredible 180 thumb-sized pellets filled with heroin. Airport officers became suspicious when she was questioned after arriving on  Ethiopian Airlines flight 500 from Adis Ababa.
Adebisi claimed she was visiting her brother in the U.S., but she was unable give details of her “brother” and his address. A routine pat-down showed that her belly was suspiciously rigid, and an X-ray revealed to astonished officials that she had in her stomach 180 thumb-sized pellets with a total weight of five pounds.

Steve Sapp of the Customs and Border Protection, said: “We were kind of shocked and surprised at the sheer number of pellets she ingested. We usually see men twice her size ingest about half of what she did.”

According to International Business Times, Adebisi broke a previous record for ingested drugs set on March 30, 2011, by another Nigerian man,

46-year-old Yomade Aborishade of Lagos, Nigeria, who was arrested for ingesting four pounds of heroin in 100 pellets.

The lady was taken to the hospital where overnight, she passed out all the pellets containing heroin worth an estimated 150,000 pounds.

Christopher Hess, director of Customs and Border Patrol for Washington D.C. said: “The amount of pellets and heroin this woman ingested is incredible, a serious health risk, and very troubling if these numbers become the new normal.”
Authorities say drug mules often attempt to smuggle heroin and cocaine, and sometimes ecstasy by swallowing latex balloons, often condoms or fingers of latex gloves or other special pellets filled with the drugs and later recovered from feces. It is a medically dangerous way of smuggling small amounts of drugs and a mule can die if a packet bursts or leaks before exiting the body. Statistics from 2003 show over 50% of foreign females in UK jails were drug mules from Jamaica, with Nigerian women making a large contribution to the balance.

Adebisi, according to MSNBC, will be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

THE NEW FACE OF TERROR…WHAAAAAT!!!!

I fly a lot and never get frustrated when there are delays because of security checks. The more security checks the better. I just don’t think that you can ever be too safe. But in this case, I have to say….come on!!!!

The girl in the picture to the right is Riyanna is an 18-month-old from New Jersey. She was pulled off a JetBlue flight Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale because officials mistakenly said she was on the no-fly list.

A toddler yanked off a Newark-bound flight as a security threat had been clear for takeoff, at least when crosschecked against the so-called federal “no-fly” list, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration said.

JetBlue representatives, though, nevertheless thought something was amiss and pulled 18-month-old Riyanna and her parents from Flight 510, bound from Fort Lauderdale International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport Tuesday.

“A customer’s boarding pass was flagged in our system as being on the No Fly list,” according to a statement issued by the airline this morning.

Although children traveling on an adult’s lap are not issued their own boarding passes, but instead have their name included on the adult’s boarding pass, “It was that name” – meaning Riyanna – that was flagged as potentially being on a no-fly list, said an airline spokeswoman, Tamara Young.

But a spokeswoman for the federal Transportation Security Administration, which vets passengers when they purchase airline tickets, says it “did not flag” the 18-month-old, meaning that Riyanna – whose parents declined to be identified – could fly.

Riyanna’s parents are of Middle-Eastern heritage but American-born. Her mother wears a hijab, a traditional head scarf worn by some Muslim women.

TSA clears the issuance of boarding passes by an airline after a crosschecking names on a government watch list, which includes the so-called no-fly list, the agency’s spokeswoman, Lisa Farbstein, said this morning.

“TSA was called to the gate by the airline and after talking to the parents and confirming through our vetting system, TSA determined the airline had mistakenly indicated the child was on a government watch list,” Farbstein said. “Individuals on the no-fly list do not get boarding passes, and the child had a boarding pass.”

But Young, the JetBlue spokeswoman, said the airline has “redundant systems” in place that can help it identify passengers who could pose a security risk.

“When uncertainty arises, we err on the side of caution, follow protocol and do not assume,” she said.

The airline, though, has not yet said detailed what sort of name lists, if any, it has access to.

Airlines, though, do not have access to the no-fly list, the TSA said.

CHECK OUT MY INTERVIEW ON THE MONIQUE SHOW: THE BIRTH OF MY CHARITY IN NIGERIA

It seems like yesterday that I had the dream to start my charity. This video below started it all. I spoke to Monique about my dream on her show and that set the ball rolling. I always knew that boxing was a gift that was given to me in this life. I also knew that it was important for me to use that gift to change the lives of kids in Nigeria. I’m the classic procrastinator and starting my charity was no different. I kept putting it off. It wasn’t until my brother, Ogbogu, passed away that I got my act together.

Losing someone that close to you puts everything in perspective. None of the little things matter anymore. It forces you to focus on the important things in life. I realized that my time on earth could be up at any time. I could be gone tomorrow. I could even be gone today. Once I came back ffom London after the funeral, I went right to work and started putting things in motion for my charity in Nigeria. A few months later, Champion Spirit Foundation was born. This will be my legacy. When I’m gone, Champion Spirit Foundation will live on.

Check out the video that started it all.
