SPOTIFY STUDY SHOWS MUSIC IS MORE AROUSING TO WOMEN THAN TOUCH

Couple kissing by Ngo Okafor www.getingo.com

DAMN!! All that time that we, men, spent perfecting that special touch. All those countless hours of practice, spent, in an effort to close the gap on the lesbian advantage. Now a new study shows that all we should have done was play a song for the ladies and the deal will be sealed….Damn you Marvin Gaye….Damn you Lionel Richie!!! Well, maybe not completely. Music does make her loose control!!The study was commissioned by digital music service Spotify to examine the relationship between music, romance and seduction.

“Dirty Dancing” was the top pick for both men and women, although the study’s author, music psychologist Daniel Mullensiefen, also pointed out that men are more willing to adjust their tastes in music in order to ensure “greater success in the bedroom.”

Well played, gentlemen.

Another surprise finding? Respondents said music playing in the background is 40% more likely to turn them on than the touch or feel of their partner.

Rather not listen to “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” during sex? Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” placed second on the list, with Ravel’s “Bolero” finishing third.

“It’s no surprise that so many respondents claimed to find music arousing in the bedroom,” Mullensiefen said in a release. He said music activates the same pleasure centers of the brain that respond to rewards such as food, drugs or sex.

One in three participants identified Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” as a song that is “better than sex.” Next on the list was “Sex on Fire” by Kings of Leon and “Angels” by Robbie Williams. Mullensiefen describes these as songs that take unexpected turns that we respond to in highly emotional, but positive, ways.

The study interviewed 2,000 people in the United Kingdom between the ages of 18 and 91, with an almost equal gender split.

Mullensiefen is co-director of the Master Program in Music, Mind and Brain and senior lecturer in the department of psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London.

He said even though some UK pop hits were favorites coming out of the study, he believes many results would also hold true in the United States. Mullensiefen said the best tracks for getting in the mood all possess similar vocal qualities, like a wide, dynamic range, more use of the “high chest voice” and raspiness. He offers Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” and “Let’s Get it On” as examples.

PRINCE HARRY OF ENGLAND NUDE PHOTOS APPEAR ONLINE AFTER PARTY IN LAS VEGAS

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas — unless you’re Prince Harry and TMZ publishes pictures of you cavorting naked during a game of strip billiards.

The tabloid website posted the photos online Tuesday night. It said the romp featuring the royal, who is third in line to the throne, took place four days earlier at a “high rollers hotel suite” on the Las Vegas strip.

One photo shows Harry, stark naked but for a wristwatch and a necklace. His hands cup his genitals. His face is turned toward the television set in the suite. And his body partially shields that of another person, also naked.

A second picture shows him hugging a woman from behind next to a pool table. Both are naked.

“Harry, along with a large entourage, went down to the hotel bar and met a bunch of hot chicks … and invited them up to his VIP suite,” said TMZ, which like CNN is a Time Warner company.

Palace officials confirmed the photos are of the prince, but declined to comment further.

Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper website said the publication of the photographs “risks embarrassing Buckingham Palace and raises questions about the prince’s security arrangements.”

The website of the Daily Mail, a middlebrow tabloid, suggested that “Harry needed a rest after all that Olympic duty but it appears the fun may have got out of hand.”

Neither website ran the photos, but the images quickly circulated worldwide, providing plenty of fodder on Twitter.

“The Queen must be sooo proud that Prince Harry showed us his crown jewels!!!! Lol,” said Danielle Monaro, part of the Elvis Duran And The Morning Show, a syndicated radio program.

“Prince William shows his cojones by rescuing stranded women in the ocean. Prince Harry shows his cojones by, well, showing his cojones,” tweeted Jennifer Burke with Canada’s CTV network.

Last week, William helped save a teenage girl who was in danger of drowning off the coast of Wales in his role as Royal Air Force search and rescue pilot.

The 16-year-old girl was caught in a rip current and rapidly losing strength when the rescue team was called out.

William, known to his RAF comrades as Flight Lt. Wales, has been stationed at a search-and-rescue base on the remote Welsh island of Anglesey since 2010, and lives there with Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge.

His younger brother, 27-year-old Harry, is no stranger to controversy.

In 2002, Harry faced accusations of under-age drinking and cannabis use. The young prince was a 16-year-old schoolboy at the time of the alleged incident

The allegations were made in the UK tabloid News of the World newspaper, which also reported his father, Prince Charles, had taken Harry to a drug rehabilitation clinic to alert him to the dangers of drug abuse.

He did not faces charges because police found no evidence to support them.

In 2005, photos of Harry were splashed across the front page of The Sun newspaper wearing a Nazi soldier’s uniform to a fancy dress party, accompanied by the headline “Harry the Nazi.”

He later apologized for the incident.

“I am very sorry if I caused any offense,” Harry said.

Four years later, Harry issued another apology after videos surfaced showing him using offensive language to describe members of his military unit.

In one clip, a voice said to be Harry’s calls a soldier a “Paki,” a derogatory term for people of South Asian descent.

In another clip, the voice tells a soldier wearing a cloth on his head that he looks “like a raghead,” another offensive term for someone who wears a headdress.

Now comes this latest controversy — one that certainly gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “hanging out.”

BLACK MALE MODEL IMAGES – EXCLUSIVE IMAGES FROM MY BRAND NEW SHOOT

It was a battle to wake up this morning. My bed would not let me get up. No matter how hard  I worked to get out, it kept pulling me back in! I finally won and that’s how I’m able to write this blog.

It’s been a challenge getting back to the level of leanness that I had before I started boxing. The body for boxing is designed differently from a body for modeling. The boxing boxing body is designed for performance, so it holds a little more body fat for power and protection. The modeling body on the other hand, just has to be muscular and super lean. No need for for power here. My fight has been to get leaner without losing my speed and power. I still do my boxing workouts everyday and I don’t want to lose my boxing edge for sparring.

I was finally able to acheive this and as luck would have it, a shoot came up with a top photographer yesterday and I think these two pictures show that I’m getting closer to my goal of being lean without losing power.

What do you think?

RYAN LOCHTE: THE MAKING OF AN OLYMPIC SEX SYMBOL

I worked on a fashion editorial with Ryan Lochte a little while back, which featured 6 athletes representing their individual sports. I represented for boxing and he did for swimming. Ryan has since then blown up in the sports branding realm and with his recent defeat of Michael Phelps, the sky is the limit. Looks definitely matter in the business of sports entertainment and Ryan Lochte’s looks will take him to places Michael Phelps didn’t.

AFTER finishing three hours of laps, sprints and weighted strokes at the University of Florida’s Olympic-size pool here, Ryan Lochte, the record-setting, gold medal-winning swimmer, was showing the briefest glimmer of fatigue.

“I just want to be done,” he said on the drive to a nearby Hilton, steering his white Range Rover with his knee, sitting far down in the bucket seats, blasting Lil Wayne. He was to spend hours shooting a commercial for a cellphone company, posing shirtless on a locker room set. Tomorrow would bring a double session of exhausting practices to rack up the 70,000 meters he swims weekly in preparation for the London Olympics next month. And then more shoots, more training, a grueling schedule of never-ending shirtlessness.

“If I do really good at the Olympics,” he said, “it’s going to be 10 times worse. Balancing all that stuff out” with swimming, he added, “just drains me.”

It was a momentary lapse in Mr. Lochte’s otherwise laid-back demeanor, so slacker-ready that he rides his scooter when walking his dog. “I’m one of the laziest people,” he’d said, grinning, “outside of, like, working out.”

Right, that. Even if his muscle-bound 6-foot-2 frame and sculptured abs — justifiably famous in their own right — weren’t evidence of his work ethic, the last few months have been a test of Mr. Lochte’s supposed laziness. In addition to training for the Games, where he plans to face off with the sport’s reigning champ, Michael Phelps, he has been on a breakneck tour of national appearances and promotions, making him this Olympics’ all-American swim hunk even before the United States team has been announced.

With his twinkling blue eyes, aquiline nose and dimpled smile, Mr. Lochte, 27, is being groomed to be a breakout Olympic superstar, with millions in corporate sponsorships to match his athletic accomplishments. He is already featured in ad campaigns for Gatorade,Gillette and Nissan. A fitness DVD is also forthcoming.

NBC, which will broadcast the London Games, has referred to Mr. Lochte as “arguably the face” of the American team on its Olympic Talk blog.

Calling him a sex symbol is hardly a stretch. There he is on the cover of this month’s Vogue, arms linked with his fellow Olympic hopefuls Hope Solo, a soccer player, and Serena Williams, the tennis star. Inside, he does his best Blue Steel look next to supermodel Karlie Kloss (she in a Haider Ackermann evening gown, he in a Speedo), a pose that seems to come as naturally to him as his signature backstroke. And Men’s Health recently ranked him No. 1 on its list of best summer bodies.

“We always sort of internally refer to him as the rock star of the swimming community,” said Katie Malone, the director of marketing at Speedo, which has sponsored him since 2006 and has him under contract through 2016. Ms. Malone added that Mr. Lochte was not typical of the sport’s hive-minded athletes, who often do little but train. “If someone’s zigging left, he’s zagging right,” she said. “He wants to stand out.”

RYAN LOCHTE won four medals at the 2008 Games in Beijing, two gold and two bronze, and set a world record in the 200-meter backstroke. But it was Mr. Phelps, with an unprecedented eight gold medals, who basked in the post-Olympics limelight, hitting the talk show circuit, enjoying a slew of lucrative endorsements and hosting “Saturday Night Live.”

Mr. Phelps, with 16 medals to date, needs just three more Olympic medals to have the most in the history of the Summer Olympics. And yet Mr. Lochte is emerging as the bigger story, marketing experts say. He has the golden-boy looks, the regular-dude demeanor. He even has a catchphrase: the exhortation “jeah!” — adopted from the rapper Young Jeezy and pronounced like “yeah,” but, in Mr. Lochte’s case, with a surfer boy slope.

“We’re a little Phelps’d out,” said Bob Dorfman, the executive creative director of Baker Street Advertising and author of the Sports Marketers’ Scouting Report. As a brand, Mr. Lochte’s appeal is “through the roof,” he added. “He has potential for winning golds, and then just the fact that he’s so damn good-looking. If he can’t beat Michael Phelps in anything else, he can beat him in that category.”

Mr. Lochte has also taken care to broaden his image, making it no secret that he wants to move beyond his sport. “I don’t want to be stuck in the swimming world,” he said. “I don’t just eat, swim, sleep — I don’t do that. There’s so much more to me than swimming.” Away from the pool deck, he added, “I hate talking about swimming.” He prefers playing basketball, or practicing his terrible golf game, or drawing surreal nature images.

His style has already set him apart. Like his idol Lil Wayne, he has a hip-hop and skater-inflected look, with flashy jewelry and swaggy high-tops. He has worn diamond grillz over his teeth on the winner’s podium, and designed a pair of emerald rhinestone-encrusted sneakers with Speedo. “He wanted green, he wanted bling,” said Ms. Malone of Speedo, which sells a flip-flop version of the sneaker for $24.99. “He likes to make a statement when he walks onto that pool deck.” Even his swim briefs are neon.

Mr. Lochte’s dream is to eventually become a clothing designer. “I want to be different, and fashion gives me that outlet to do that,” he said, lounging on a couch after a practice in loose basketball shorts, a T-shirt that read “Google Me” and black Dolce & Gabbana slippers. For public events, he steps it up: Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren have dressed him, and he was signed by Ford Models.

His nearby townhouse — which he shares with Ben Hesen, a blond swimmer who often functions as his stand-in for commercials; his younger brother, Devon Lochte, a college student; and Carter, his Doberman — could be called bland bachelor pad, with boxes of Gatorade stacked on the pool table.

But he does have a room-size closet.

“Ho, I think I have about, a total of 130 pairs of shoes,” Mr. Lochte said, warming to the subject. “So you can say I like shoes.” (“Ho” is another Lochte-ism, kind of like the inverse of Homer Simpson’s “D’oh!”) For the Olympic trials this month, he plans to sport high tops with star-spangled wings, like an all-American Hermes. “Don’t duplicate!!” he wrote, posting a picture of them on Twitter.

And he’s already considering his London wardrobe. Having to stick to the official Olympic team uniform designed by Ralph Lauren “stinks,” he said, “because I really want to wear my shoes.” He plans to accessorize with diamond bracelets and some new grillz: “Maybe like red, white, blue — a flag, so when I smile, it’s like, pshoosh!” he said, imitating the sound of a firecracker.

His fashion credentials got a huge boost his month when he became the fourth man to grace Vogue’s cover, in a spread photographed by Annie Leibovitz. Of the cover boys, “I’m the only one who had two girls,” he boasted playfully, adding that the response to his chest-baring image has been “insane.”

“Everyone just started blowing my phone up,” he said. “They’re still doing it, on Twitter, on Facebook.” And his TV spots are in heavy rotation on ESPN, MTV and in prime time. “I randomly see it come on and I’m like, ‘Damn, that’s tight.’ ”

FOR many athletes, this kind of attention may be a distraction. And with a hard-charging business manager, Erika Wright, recently hired to expand his marketability (the fitness DVD was her idea), Mr. Lochte has seen his downtime all but evaporate as he juggles the demands of training with his professional responsibilities outside the pool. It adds up to some growing pains.

“I’m really sick of this place,” he said of Gainesville, as he cut through the University of Florida campus, where he graduated in 2007 with a degree in sports management.

He’d taken a girl out on the town for drinks the night before. “I kind of just let her go and I did my own thing,” he said. That, too, has become difficult: fans ask him to lift his shirt, wanting photos with his abs. By his own admission, he goes on a lot of bad dates. “I’m over the whole college scene,” he said. “The only reason I stay is because I have the best coach in the world. He knows how to motivate me.”

His longtime coach, Gregg Troy, said the secret to Mr. Lochte is to set him loose. “It impacts his performance at practice when we don’t get a little free time from the sport,” he said. He has prescribed a night out, Mr. Lochte reported gleefully, and doesn’t ask too many questions about extracurriculars like surfing and skateboarding, though he drew the line at sky diving. Mr. Lochte will always find a way to make his coach sweat: he once sustained an injury at home, break-dancing.

He has been a bombastic goofball since childhood, when his mom and dad, Ileana and Steve, were his first swim coaches. Now divorced, they still live nearby, in Daytona Beach, and the bro-iness of being the middle son of a large sports clan (two older sisters and two younger brothers, all but one swimmers) surfaces often. At home, Mr. Lochte can’t even be bothered to get off the couch to summon his roommate. Instead, he fired up a remote control car “and I drove it with a piece of paper that said, ‘Hey, c’mere,’ ” he said with a sideways grin.

But he’s also had a competitive streak since he was at least 3, when he remembers orchestrating milk chugging contests with his dad over the breakfast table. He wants to move to Los Angeles after the Olympics, though he still expects to compete, commuting to Gainesville to train.

Mr. Phelps, on the other hand, who at 26 is a year younger than Mr. Lochte, has said this Olympics will likely be his last. He’s a Jeezy fan too: “jeah” was something he and Mr. Lochte used to text each other, when they became buddies after the 2004 Olympic trials, before Mr. Phelps became an athletic paragon.

“My hat is off to him, because he had to deal with so much,” Mr. Lochte said. “I got a glimpse of it this year.”

It was just after another punishing early morning practice; Mr. Lochte had barely been able to climb the stairs to his coach’s office. Yesterday, his legs felt like Jell-O, he said. “Today they feel like cinder blocks.” There was time for breakfast, maybe a nap, before the afternoon training. And then another shoot for the cellphone commercial.

The first one, Mr. Lochte said, “wasn’t bad. It was actually easy. I kind of liked it. ”

STEPHANIE RICE, OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL SWIMMER, CRITICIZED FOR WEARING RACY SWIMSUIT

Swimmer Stephanie Rice, who swims for a living while wearing a swimsuit in a swimming pool, is catching flak in her native Australia for tweeting a picture of herself in a swimsuit. The nerve of some people.

The three-time gold medalist took the shot of herself wearing a birthday gift from designer Ellie Gonsalves and posted it on Twitter. It made figurative waves one month before she defends her Olympic titles in both individual medleys.

Some Twitter commenters thought it was another disgrace to an Australian swim team that’s recently dealt with a gun controversy. There was also concern that Rice’s sponsor, Speedo, would be upset by the photo because — I don’t know — they don’t like free publicity? But, rest assured, Rice isn’t even with Speedo anymore!

Oh, how you disappointment me my Aussie friends. I can see how this would be a big deal in America, what with our Puritanical sensibilities and penchant for affected moral outrage. But in Australia? The land founded as a penal colony where everyone’s laid back, even when comparing the size of their knives? She’s a swimmer in a swimsuit! That’s like getting upset at Michael Phelps for walking around shirtless. Plus, isn’t it like 115 degrees during Melbourne summers? I just assumed everyone walked around like this.

My theory: This controversy was ginned up so papers in Australia had a legitimate reason to run the photo. For shame, y’all. We’d never stoop so low in the United States. (See below for more Rice photos.)

Photos: See more of Stephanie Rice

The current 400 IM world-record holder has been in trouble before for tweeting racy pictures. A few years ago, she posted this picture of herself dressed as a police woman.

Stephanie Rice cop outfit on Twitter

(Twitter)

Despite the absurdity over the uproar, Stephanie isn’t necessarily in the right. Doesn’t she know the rule about taking racy photos of yourself in the mirror and sending them over social networks? Angle the phone to the right so the flash doesn’t obscure your face! Or don’t take them. Yeah, that’s what I’m probably supposed to say there.

LOLO JONES, OLYMPIC ATHLETE: BEING A VIRGIN MAKES FINDING A BOYFRIEND DIFFICULT

Feel free to chime in at any time and let me know if you agree that being a virgin makes dating difficult. You will agree, by taking a look at the nude picture of Lolo Jones to the right, that it would be difficult for most men to have a sexless relationship with her.

With her perfectly sculpted body, model looks and Olympic success, you might think track-and-field star Lori “Lolo” Jones would have her pick of men.  But the athlete admits she’s found it difficult to land a steady boyfriend — and she thinks the fact that she’s a 29-year-old virgin is to blame.

Jones says there aren’t many men out there who can deal with her decision not to have sex until marriage, reports Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.

The Olympian confesses that she has tried several different online dating services as well as Twitter to look for a potential love, but she hasn’t found the “one” yet. Not helping the matter is her admission on Twitter that she has never had sex.

“It’s something, a gift I want to give my husband,” she says on the May 22 episode of the critically acclaimed HBO sports program.

Jones adds that steering clear of premarital sex has been the hardest accomplishment of her life.

“This journey has been hard,” she adds. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. Harder than training for the Olympics. Harder than studying for college has been staying a virgin before marriage.”

The Olympic hurdler adds: “I’ve been tempted. I’ve had guys tell me … ‘Hey, you know, if you have sex, it’ll help you run faster.’”

No matter how much Jones wants a gold medal, some pre-competition nookie just isn’t going to happen. “If you marry me,” she jokes on the show, “then yeah.”

“NAKED BLACK JUSTICE” CAMPAIGN IS ART, NOT PORNOGRAPHY

Click the image to open in full size.I FOUND THIS ON LIPSTICK ALLEY. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS? CHECK OUT THE VIDEO BELOW AND READ MORE:

Here we go again. Someone is reporting us to Facebook for violating community standards, and this week’s example (last week it was a photo of an indigenous woman breastfeeding her child) had to do with a “Naked Black Justice” campaign that, quite frankly, was powerful and resonated with many (hundreds of likes and shares in about 30 minutes). Artististically, naked, nude black male and female models is an art form. We made sure the the image linked back to the campaign’s original link. We thought the message was amazing. The image is to the left:
This morning we logged into our Facebook and were told that this image violated its community standards. It was just a generic violation, we are sure it was automated, so we don’t know EXACTLY why the photo got taken down. Yet, we are thinking that it has to do with the “nudity” clause. According to Facebook, this is what they have to say about “violations,” in their own words:
Facebook reviews reports to determine whether or not the content violates our Terms of Use. We remove content that is considered obscene, violent, malicious or otherwise offensive. If you received a warning about an item that was taken down, then we have established that it violated these terms.

We would still like to know what is “obscene, violent, malicious, or otherwise obscene” about this image. The image is the start of a much-needed campaign to start destroying stereotypes about race and our perception of them. According to the campaign’s creator, this campaign is SUPPOSED to make you feel uncomfortable, to make you think, to make you act. We were not surprised that our community on Facebook (some of the smartest and most amazing people we know) resonated instantly with this image. Here is what the campaign’s creator has to say about his art:
This photography campaign was designed to bring attention to the issues of racism, prejudice and overall ignorance that has been impressed upon Black Americans. This is no longer just a statement…it has become a MOVEMENT to get others to understand that the world would be such a better place if we could just ERASE THE HATE!! Nudity was implemented to demonstrate the RAW REALITY of these issues…so if it causes you to become uncomfortable while viewing this…GOOD…maybe it will challenge you and others to take a stand against these injustices.

SHOOT THE MESSENGER

Let me start by thanking everyone that read and commented on my blog post yesterday. Yesterday’s post about the plus size models caused quite an uproar. Weight and size is a very touchy subject all over the world. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the United States or Nigeria. The United Kingdom or India. No matter where we are, we want to be seen as attractive by the opposite sex…or same sex, depending on what you like. Therefore, when someone, such as myself makes a comment about about a certain group, there will be major hurt feelings.

Be that as it may, the truth hurts. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the facts are exactly that, facts. Shooting the messenger does not make the truth go away. My blog yesterday was not about what I personally find attractive or not. Some people like big beautiful women (BBW), some do not. It is strictly about health. The health of our people. This is not a joke. Many of the coments mentioned the Thyroid as the culprit for weight gain. Even though there is some truth to this, studies on people with Thyroid conditions showed a 5-6 pound weight gain in women, and 3-4 pound weight gain in men over a three-and-a-half year follow up. They did not gain 50 pounds or more! Recently, I have seen young people with all kinds of heart diseases, that in the past were common only in much older people. By young, I mean under 20 years old!! The good news here is that by losing some weight, even if it is a little bit of weight, we will all become helthier.

Cardiovascular disease risk increases due to overweight elevating blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, and increasing insulin resistance. The location of excess body fat can further increase CVD risk. Central obesity for example, is directly associated with an increased risk of heart disease. A 20% reduction in body weight can reduce CVD risk by 40%. This can be achieved by keeping BMI in the normal range. Over 50% of all cases of hypertension are simply due to being overweight.

The incidence of diabetes increases with increasing weight. Diabetes is three times more likely in obese individuals with a BMI of 28 or greater.

Osteoarthritis symptoms are worse in men and women with a BMI over 25. Excess body weight stresses joint cartilage.

Cancer risk can increase due to elevated hormones associated with obesity, influencing cancer development. Excess estrogen is linked with reproductive system cancers. Adipose tissue (fat tissue) is a major site of estrogen synthesis in women. Scientists link a BMI of 28 to 30 with an increase in cancer risk.

Other diseases associated with obesity include sleep apnea, abdominal hernias, varicose veins, gout, gall bladder disease, respiratory problems including pickwickian syndrome (a breathing blockage linked with sudden death), and liver malfunction.

Massive obesity, indicated by a BMI over 40, is so closely associated with health problems that it is regarded as a disease in its own right

Assessment  of weight and health risk involves using three key measures:

  1. Body       mass index (BMI)
  2. Waist       circumference

Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is a useful measure of overweight and obesity. It is  calculated from your height and weight. BMI is an estimate of body fat and a  good gauge of your risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat. The  higher your BMI, the higher your risk for certain diseases such as heart  disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems,  and certain cancers.

Although BMI can be used for most men and women, it does have some  limits:

  • It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build.
  • It may underestimate body fat in older persons  and others who have lost muscle.

Use the BMI Calculator or BMI Tables to estimate your body fat. The BMI score means the following:

BMI
Underweight
Below 18.5
Normal
18.5–24.9
Overweight
25.0–29.9
Obesity
30.0 and Above

Waist Circumference

Measuring waist  circumference helps  screen for possible health risks that come with  overweight and obesity. If most of your fat is around your waist rather than at  your hips, you’re at a higher risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes. This  risk goes up with a waist size that is greater than 35 inches for women or  greater than 40 inches for men. To correctly measure your waist, stand and  place a tape measure around your middle, just above your hipbones. Measure your  waist just after you breathe out.

The reason I write this is because I want people to stand up and do something about our health as a people. I have never believed in making excuses for my shortcoming, and believe me, I have several. The human being is supposed to grow and learning to take care of ourselves is a part of growth. Take a step today

NIGERIANS AND NUDITY – IS THERE A DOUBLE STANDARD?

I just came across this Picture on Facebook today. It was called of ‘Three Nigerian Girls Posing Nude’. Upon a second look, it is actually the same girl dong her rendition of See no evil, Speak no evil, Hear no evil. As an artist, I have no problem with nudity as long as it is done tastefully. I think the human body is beautiful and a work of art by God, so why should we hide it or be ashamed of it?

I think that this girl beautiful. I don’t care if she is American, British or Nigerian. Beauty is Beauty. We must embrace our beauty. We must love ourselves. We must promote our beauty. If we do not, no one else will.

The person that posted this image said that the comments from the original post have been 90% negative. This is what he said, “Do you think Africans have a double standard when it comes to nude pictures…Lets face it, when Americans or the British pose nude most Africans call it Sexy, Hot, and Creative, and when Africans pose nude  most Africans view it in a negative light”. What are your thoughts?

THEY DID THE BEST THEY COULD

I woke up this morning because my throat was as dry as the Sahara. I grabbed some water and went back to bed, but the damage was done, no more sleep for me! I looked at the clock on the cable box and saw that it was 6:20am. DAMN!! What I wouldn’t do for 40 more minutes of sleep. I watched a little bit of the Austatralian Open Tennis tournament ( I like watching tennis), hoping that I would doze off, but it didn’t happen. So I got out of bed. I might as well take advantage of being up early. I have to get ready to go to Atlanta today to shoot the TV One show. I have to get up and write, go for a run and I haven’t even packed yet.

As I lay in bed, thinking about my trip, I thought about my parents. I thought about the fact they are getting older and will not be here forever. They were probably still sleping at that time. I wondered whether they were proud of me. I want them to be proud of me. I think that no matter how rebelious children are, deep down, they still want their parents to be proud of them. Do my parents close their eyes at night and smile, just before sleep carries them away, thinking that my choices in life make them proud? Do they yearn to wake up in the morning just to hear of my accomplishments? I wonder.

Then my thoughts go back to when I was a child, growing up in Enugu, Nigeria. My mom and dad were very tough. My parents are extremely old school. They believed in ‘Spare the rod and spoil the child’.  I have to put it put it out there that this does not mean that I was spanked with a rod. It’s just an expression. My parents were all about hard work and discpline. And discipline us they did. Spankings were a norm when I was growing up. Physical punishment was not viewed as child abuse when I was growing up. I think that most children could use a spanking or two, but you didn’t hear that from me. It can in some cases, be a bit excessive though. Kids back then never felt that their spanking was isolated because we would all come to school and compare spanking stories. Teachers at school were actually allowed to spank kids on the school compound. I always wondered whether mine was excessive. The battle rages on as to whether I will spank my kids. The jury is still out. Discipline, definitely….spankings, probably, maybe, not sure. See, I still can’t decide.

Even though I believe that most of the disciplinary actions directed towards me was to make me grow up to become a better person, I often wondered as to whether it was done to break my spirit or to make me behave better. Parents often discipline their children out of fear; fear that they would become strippers, become criminals or worse. Most of the time, they worry about what their friends would say about their children’s behaviour or chioces. Many times they worry about what other family members would think or say about their children. In many parents’ minds, their children are their property and must do as they are told. How dare you embarass me?!?! Back then if you weren’t studying to become a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer or architect, you were embarassment and a lost soul. You can only imagine how my decision to become a model went over.

They forget to trust in the fact that leading by example is the best way to raise children. They should trust in the fact that they are not raising a bunch of fools. Parents forget that no matter how much you spank a child, they will still turn out the way they were destined to turn out. I’ve seen many boys and girls raised by extremely strict parents grow up to become their parents’ worst nightmare. Children should be disciplined, but not out of fear. Many of the girls that gracefully slide up and down that golden pole were raised by pastors and so were some of the guys holding up liquor stores.

In closing, I will say that who I am today is a combination of my upbringing and fate. My work ethic and my drive are a product of the environment that I was raised in. I’m not saying that the old school way of thinking is completely wrong, I just think that some adjustment and individuality would not have hurt. I’m not mad at my parents or parents in general. I want them to be proud of me. I also know that at the end of the, THEY DID THE BEST THEY COULD.
