THE BEST DIET FOR KEEPING THE WEIGHT OFF

You’ve lost weight, but will you keep it off? A low-glycemic-index diet may work better than others at burning calories and helping people ward off those pesky Lbs, reports a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

In the study, researchers had 21 people who’d lost 10 to 15 percent of their body weight try three different diets, each for 4 weeks. The diets consisted of a low-fat, a low-carbohydrate, and a low-glycemic-index—which endorses carbohydrates that keep blood sugar levels low—eating program.

The result: Even though the participants ate the same amount of calories on each of the plans, they burned an average of 300 fewer calories per day on the low-fat diet compared to the low-carb option.

But the low-carb diet wasn’t a win-win alternative, either. Although it was better at encouraging calorie burn, it also caused the greatest increases in cortisol and C-reactive protein levels—both of which may elevate heart disease risk—among the study participants.

The low-glycemic-index diet, however, seemed to strike the right balance in terms of heart health and resting metabolism, says study authoer Cara Ebbeling, Ph.D., associate director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Children’s Hospital. And any help you can get torching extra calories is beneficial after a big weight loss. That’s because the more weight you lose, the more your metabolism slows, making it  increasingly difficult to burn calories, explains Ebbeling. (Here’s the truth behind the glycemic index, a notion many experts disagree with entirely.)

So is a low-glycemic-index diet the savior for people who want to keep the excess baggage from creeping back? The problem of “weight maintenance” may not be so easily solved, warns Alan Aragon, M.S., and a Men’s Health nutrition expert. “You can’t tell a whole lot after 4 weeks,” he says. “And looking at the nutritional makeup of the diets used in the study, you’re really comparing two extremes in the low-carb and low-fat diets to a more moderate diet, which will almost always be best in the long run.”

Avoid diets that condemn whole nutrient categories, he suggests. Instead, eat proven weight-managers—whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts, as well as proteins like fish and meat. “Your body requires about ten times more energy to process a gram of protein than a gram of fat. So you’ll burn more calories just by eating more protein-packed foods,” Aragon explains. Follow our 6 Grilling Recipes for Weight Loss to cook up some of the leanest, healthiest, and tastiest dishes of the  summer—and effortlessly drop pounds  while you’re doing it.

Exercise will also play a big role in whether you’re able to fend off the old weight, Aragon says. Running or other aerobic exercise is good, but you should mix in weight training at least half of the time. “Resistance exercise boosts lean body mass and metabolism, both of which help your body burn calories even when you’re not working out,” he says. Shoot for a minimum of three 30-to-60-minute workout sessions a week, he advises. Try the 18 cutting-edge workouts found in the Speed Shred program. TERRELL OWENS FIRES LONGTIME AGENT DREW ROSENHAUS

Terrell Owens just keeps finding people to blame for his downward spiral. Everybody cannot be wrong. I have always said that I have a lot of love for Terrell Owens, but there is no smoke without fire.

Owens has severed ties with longtime agent Drew Rosenhaus and hired Jason Woy, a Dallas-based agent who represents current Cowboys Anthony Spencer, Jason Hatcher, Kenyon Coleman and Dan Bailey.

“I am making changes in my life so I can continue my career as a professional football player,” Owens said in a statement on his website. “I have hired Jordan Woy as my new agent.  It was important for me to hire someone who believes in my ability to help an NFL team and believes in me as a person.”

The 38-year-old wide receiver, recently released by the Allen (Texas) Wranglers of the Indoor Football League, still harbors visions of a return to the NFL, where he last played for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2010.

“I love the game of football and I know I can help a team,” Owens’ statement said. “I have had to go through some humbling times, but I am more determined than ever to show a team that I can be a huge asset to them as a player and a team leader in the locker room.”

After his very public release from the Wranglers, it was reported that the team offered Owens a $50 severance package that also included TO being evicted from the home the Wranglers provided him and forced to hand over the keys to a loaner Jeep Cherokee.

Shortly after, Owens demanded a public apology from the Wranglers and $160,000, an amount Owens believes he is owed for four game checks. According to his attorney, Owens was most upset that the team said a missed charity appearance at a local hospital played a role in his release.

Owens claimed the Wranglers privately acknowledged that a team publicist gave him an incorrect date for the visit.

“Our fans are amongst the best in the league and it is impossible to maintain a player when even our fans notice and comment on a player’s lack of effort both on and off the field,” Wranglers owner John Frankel said in a statement at the time of Owens’ release. “We need to do what is best for this team, our fans and this community.”

Owens appears ready to put the episode with the Wranglers behind him and focus on a return to the NFL, where he has played 15 seasons for five teams. For his career, Owens is sixth on the all-time list in receptions (1,078), second in receiving yards (15,934) and tied for second in receiving TDs (153).

“I am in the best shape of my life and preparing daily,” Owens said on his website. “I am looking for a team who will give me that chance and I know I will pay big dividends to them as a player and teammate.”

THE MOST DOWNLOADED BLACK MALE MODEL

I’m writing this blog on my Android phone. This is the beauty of technology. You are free to blog anywhere! You don’t have to be tied to a computer anymore! I just found out that getingo.com is ranked #3 worldwide, by Google when the term ‘black male model’ is searched . The other two websites are blogs which feature different black male models for each daily post. It’s a  pretty big deal for a one-person site to be ranked so high. Such a high ranking is paramount to my ‘most downloaded black male model’ moniker.

People ask me constantly what the X-factor for me in this business is, and I tell them that I can sum it up in one word; my brain. I’m the biggest nerd I know. There are many other male models and guys who are not male models, that would be considered to have stronger faces or are more ripped than I am, but they don’t have my brain. They are not able to decode the game in order to stay ahead of it. I can do search engine optimization for my website, I can edit images and video and upload them, I’ relenless with all of it. I have been able to figure out what works for me in the business. I figured out how to be successful, happy and maintain control. It doesn’t hurt that I know computers inside and out, so I’m able to understand how to market and promote my brand online. I study internet marketing intensely.

Being the perfectionist that I am, I won’t be able to rest until I get to #1. Something tells me that even when I do get to #1, I’ll still be hustling to keep that top ranking. Everybody is vying for that top ranking, so you can’t rest when you get there. I have to continue writing and blogging in addition to uploading images and videos, as well pushing other bloggers to write about me. It all adds up. Online marketing and promotion is one venture where grinding directly pays off.

DO THEY KNOW IT’S CHRISTMAS TODAY?

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!! Christmas fell on a sunday this year. That’s two reasons for people to go to church today. I haven’t been in church in quite a while now. I feel that at this stage in my life, I have built a relationship with God that no religious institution can define. I grew up heavily Catholic. I was actually an alter boy when I was growing up in Nigeria. I loved being a part of the church and serving at mass. It was a performance. I guess I never realized that performing was in my blood.

I think back to Nigeria today and I remember all the people who did not have the means that many of us take for granted today. I think back to the kids I visited at the boxing gyms in the neighborhoods that nobody wanted to go in to (my camera crew was nervous about going to Mushin, in Lagos, where one of the boxing gyms was). There is a parallel with this situation here in the US. There are poor kids everywhere. There are poor kids in bad neighborhoods here in America and I just hope that they all have something nice happen for them today, to let them know that its’s Christmas today. It’s supposed to be a happy day for all, but somehow , I think that it isn’t for many. While we are busy obsessing over what gifts we got or didn’t get for christmas, there are others who may not even have a meal. As the saying goes, “Without bread, all is misery”.

One way to make it a happy day for all is to make sure to give to the needy this holiday season. It will make you feel better and make a difference in the life of the needy person.

HELLO…GOOD MORNING FROM NEW YORK!

I woke up a few hours ago from such a deep sleep. I passed out last night, shortly after I came home. I think I passed out at about 11pm. I tried to stay up for as long as could, so that I wouldn’t suffer the effects of jet lag. It worked. I don’t like being slowed down by jet lag, so I make sure that once I arrive in a city, I sychronize my sleep to match that city in order to make the sleep transition easy. It was so cold last night. I can’t believe that within 24 hours, I went from warm and tropic to frigid amd miserable. It’s all good though. Nobody said that life in the trenches would be easy.

I have to get back into my routine of eating three meals a day. While in Nigeria, I would eat breakfast and most of the time, skip lunch because we had so much running around to do. Later in the evening, we would sit down for a big dinner and drinks. This routine is not ideal for building muscle. If you are working out, you have to take in enough calories in order to support muscle building. In order to keep my metabolism firing, I have to eat at least 3-4 meals per day. You never want your body to go into starvation mode because that it causes it to store fat. I definitely was not doing that and that is why I lost 4 pounds. I’m happy that I lost weight instead of gaining weight though. I can always put muscle on by eating more food. Besides, a slimmer me is a leaner, more defined me. I’m happy either way. I don’t stress my weight, although I have to say that if I have a shoot, I work to stay leaner. I do like to keep my weight at about 201 pounds for boxing. I don’t want these young guys thinking that they can push me around.

That said, I’m going to eat breakfast and then head to the gym. Today will be my first full workout in NYC. I’m dreading it a little bit because I know that it will be tough. No pain…No gain!! That’s what they say. I will try to remember that when I’m kicking my own ass. I will also train with my boxing trainer at some point today. No rest for the weary!! What’s on your agenda for today?

GOODBYE NIGERIA…I’LL BE BACK SOON

It’s time for my love affair with Nigeria to come to an end. Well, maybe I should really say, come to a pause. I’m going back to New York today. I had so much fun in Nigeria. So many great memories. It will take weeks, maybe even months for me to come down from this high that I’m on right now. Nigeria is a lovely, crazy country; a personality just like mine. I love it!!! Nigeria showed me so much love and support. So happy to see one of their own doing great things in the west. I guess one can only feel that kind of love at home. Even people that didn’t know me embraced me. I felt that all the years of hardwork are being appreciated

I will be back much more often though. I promise to come back to Nigeria every 2 to 3 months. Things have progressed so quickly with the Champion Spirit Foundation. I went and trained with the boxers at the Young Star Boxing Club in Mushin. It was such a cool experience. Everyone is usually so afraid to go to Mushin, but I didn’t care. I have no fear of my people. We had a huge crowd gathered around the ring, cheering us on while we hit the pads and the bag. You could see the hope and joy in their eyes.

This is exactly what I had visualized for my trip home. I wanted to come home and make an impact. I wanted to inspire someone with my success and I succeeded at that. Such a productive trip home.  I want to send a big, huge thank you to DM+. DM+ did such an amazing PR job for me. They shared my hunger for making a difference in the entertainment business, not just in Nigeria or Africa, but the world. Together, we acheived so much in 10 days. They are the best at what they do. We did things no one thought was possible and it is only just the begining.

Nigeria and Africa is the next frontier. The rest of the world will be looking to Africa for investment in business and we will be ready to lead the charge towards greatness in African entertainment. What are you going to do today?

TURN EVERY SITUATION INTO A PARTY!!

I woke up a little late today and rushed over to the gym. It was a good thing that I woke up late because by the time I got to the gym, I was the only one there. I had the gym all to myself. The music was always uninspiring in the gym. I planned to do some hard running, so great music was paramount. They always play dancy type music, like Cher and likes of that. Since I was there by myself, I asked the gym instructor (or trainer) to play some Nigerian music or some hip-hop. I didn’t want to get him into trouble though. The music might scare some of the people who might want to come in to the gym. I got on the treadmill and started running. The instructor came back shortly after I started, plugged in an Ipod and Rick Ross filled the room. YES!!!! That’s more like it. I ran hard. I ran a 5K to start and then 6, 15 second sprints with 45 second rest between runs.

When I was done with my run and stepped off the treadmill, I realized that a small group had gathered in the gym. The spa therapists, the gardner and other hotel employees had come to gym to listen to the music and watch me train. An audience is always welcome while I’m training. The energy pushes me to train harder. And so I did. I started out with 4 super-set of Squats, leg extensions, leg curls and abs. I then did 4 sets of heavy squat presses, incline pushups and bicycles for abs. This workout was tough to do after a hard run, but I had an audience and couldn’t disappoint them!!

It was a party in the gym. I was dancing between sets and they were dancing in the corner. It was fun. It went from what would have been a dull, un-inspired workout to a PARTY!!!! I have to prepare for an interview which will be followed later on in the evening by me judging The Martini Male Model Search here in Lagos. Until next time, TURN EVERY SITUATION INTO A PARTY!!

STAND IN THE PATH OF TRAFFIC

Location or more specifically, positioning is truly everything. In order to meet the right contacts in the field that you would like to conquer, it is imperative to network at the places where the key players in that particular field hang out. When my brother told me how much the hotel he booked would cost, I nearly lost it. Shortly after I got to the hotel, I quickly realized why it was so important to stay at the hotel he selected. Not only was it the most beautiful hotel in Lago, every body hangs out in the lounge of my hotel. The restaurant is always packed with major players in the Nigerian entertainment and media industries. The number of contacts that we have made here are priceless. Sometimes, when I just come down to grab a drink or go to the gym, I meet someone that turns out to be the director of this major media outlet or the Managing Director of that Television or cable network. You have to be in it to win it.

I was recently told the story of an insurance salesman who set up spies in all service industries. He even had spies in the airline business. His look outs would inform him of when a wealthy person would be flying on a particular airline to London in addition to what seat number they would be in. The salesman would then purchase a seat on the same flight next to them. He would get on the plane and then chat them up. Many times on international flights, strangers bond over fear of death especially when there is a bit of turbulence. The saleman would bond with the wealthy individual and then sell them insurance. When the plane lands, the salesman would have closed the deal. He then turns right back around, gets on the next flight and returns home. Mission accomplished!!

You have to stand in the path of traffic in order to catch fish!! That is the only way to make things happen for yourself.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON OUT HERE!!

Ngo Okafor Black Male Model

Ngo Okafor Black Male Model

Monday was a great day for me. I didn’t want to talk about me yesterday because I felt that news that was bigger than me happened. Joe Frazier passed away on monday. Monday was a great day for me because I ran 7 miles in 58 minutes. That is major for me!! It’s hard for me to talk about that in this post today because as I was leaving the gym yesterday, I received a tweet that rapper, producer, actor Heavy D passed away. Back-to-back days of people I admired passing away was just crazy. Heavy D was only 44. The scond act of his life was just starting. What a year. All this news of death makes me wonder what the hell is going on out here!!! It just shows once again that you’re here today and gone tomorrow. With all this bad news, it just seems so trivial to talk about running on a treadmill or lifting weights to build muscle.

Some say that talking about happier things, keeping our minds away from the pain of loss, makes us feel better, but it doesn’t. We might feel better for a few minutes while we laugh, but we have eventually have to deal. We have to face it and then we can make sense of it and move past it. So crazy! Until then I’ll continue to work hard because that is the one thing I can control. I can control how fast my legs or how much weight I can move. I can control whether I give in to the pain or push through it. Everything else is up to the higher powers.

As I run my 6-7 miles today, my mind will be full of people that we have loved and lost and pray that they rest in perfect peace.
