4 EXAMPLES OF HOW LIST PRICES ARE MEANINGLESS: LIST PRICE=FAKE PRICE

After reading this, I wondered why these practices were not ilegal. When almost no one pays full price, what does “full price” even mean? From  cars to college to health  care, consumers today are  surrounded by huge markdowns—which, when you think about it, wouldn’t exist if  goods and services weren’t marked up so high in the first place.

Why is the consumer landscape filled with prices that no one is really  expected to pay? You know, the “original” or “compare to” prices, also known as “MSRPs,” which are typically listed right next to the actual purchase price. If  almost no one pays a list price, isn’t it meaningless?

Not entirely, says Kit  Yarrow, a consumer psychologist and occasional contributor to Time.com. “People really aren’t very good at  calculating the worth of a product or service,” she says. “It might seem like  they should be jaded, but consumers still absolutely, positively rely on list  prices to determine value.”

Marketers love to use the concept of an “original” or “suggested” price as a  way to convince shoppers they’re getting a can’t-pass-up bargain. As a result,  we’re surrounded by initial prices that buyer and seller alike know are  unrealistic and inflated, and yet that somehow serve a purpose—as a point of  comparison, or as a starting point for negotiations. Life would probably be a  lot less frustrating and confusing if fake “full” prices didn’t exist in many  areas, including these:

Health Care Anyone who has ever looked closely at a bill  from a hospital knows that the health care pricing systems in the U.S. are  completely absurd. In Steven Brill’s recent TIME cover story about overinflated  medical bills and why health care in general has become so expensive, many  hospital representatives admitted that the initial prices listed on  bills—decreed by someone or something called the “chargemaster”—are basically  meaningless. “Those are not our real rates,” one hospital spokesperson told  Brill, flatly, when asked about prices listed on a bill. “I’m not sure why you  care.”

The justification for such as system seems to be that it allows hospitals  to use a crazily inflated price as a starting point for negotiations with  insurers—and also for patients who have no insurance. The argument is also made  that hospitals want to be able to charge wealthy foreigners top dollar for  services, with the idea that these easy profits will be used to help provide  subsidized services for the poor.

The sad truth, detailed in the story by Brill, is this:

I quickly found that although every hospital has a chargemaster, officials  treat it as if it were an eccentric uncle living in the attic. Whenever I asked,  they deflected all conversation away from it. They even argued that it is  irrelevant. I soon found that they have good reason to hope that outsiders pay  no attention to the chargemaster or the process that produces it. For there  seems to be no process, no rationale, behind the core document that is the basis  for hundreds of billions of dollars in health care bills.

Cars The new-car purchase is probably the most obvious,  well-established example of how the “sticker price” isn’t a real price. Due to  auto dealership incentives and rebates, leasing and financing deals, and  old-fashioned haggling, virtually no one pays the price listed on a new  vehicle.

Despite the fact that consumers hate that’s it’s a hassle just to get to a final price for a new car, the  system persists because, well, it just always has. Most dealerships apparently  think that it’s still in their best interests to operate this way, though some  admit that the process is designed for idiots.

College For decades, we’ve watched in horror as tuition and fees have soared at public and private colleges  alike. Costs at state schools have increased by 40% or more overnight, while  dozens of private universities have crossed over the $50K-per-year barrier.

At the same time that students and their families are instructed to freak out  due to skyrocketing costs, they’re also told that it’s wise to ignore the  numbers when navigating the college search. Why? Because relatively few students  pay full price.

Studies have shown that thanks mostly to scholarships and financial aid private college students get a 33% discount, on average, off  the full price of tuition. Many of the public and private institutions recently named as “Best Value” colleges made it to the list not  because of low starting prices—but because the widespread availability of  discounts brings costs down. Many students get 40% or 50% off the college list  price, once grants, scholarships, and aid are factored in.

Retail Think about how many easy ways shoppers can “save” on everyday purchases—store reward programs, online coupon codes, and  old-fashioned weekly sales to name three. It seems as if every price tag must  point out a “Compare to” or “Original” price to demonstrate the discount being  offered, and every receipt must proudly tell the customer “How Much You  Saved.”

First off, this has been pointed out by loads of personal finance wonks, but  it bears repeating once more: When you’re spending money, you’re not saving  money. That goes even when something is “on sale.”

Secondly, the ubiquity of markdowns and discounts via sales, loyalty  programs, and such has brought to light something of an existential  bargain-shopper conundrum: When everything is always “on sale,” what exactly is  a sale? Do the terms “full price,” “original price,” “compare-to price,” and “manufacturer’s suggested retail price” mean much of anything? Do they have any  relationship to genuinely good prices?

About a year ago, JCPenney CEO Ron Johnson came clean about how the store’s original prices were fake prices cooked up mainly to make  the inevitable markdowns seem more impressive and tempting to shoppers. The  strategy is known as “price anchoring,” and it’s standard practice at most  stores. Johnson said that perhaps 1% of all JCPenney merchandise was sold at  full price—the rest was bought “on sale.” The plan was to replace fake prices  with a new, “fair and square” system that got rid of pricing games  involving coupons and sales.

While the new system sounded great to many consumer advocates, it proved to  be a failure with shoppers, and JCP scrapped the idea. The result is shoppers should expect “sales”—and artificially inflated “original” or “suggested retail” prices—to  keep appearing at JCPenney and the majority of stores out there.

50 CENT PARTNERS WITH MANNY PACQUAIO: LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

American rapper 50 Cent has posted a picture  of himself with boxer Manny Pacquiao along with the words ‘Big business moves’  which could impact on his relationship with the Filipino’s rival Floyd  Mayweather.

Rumours about a rift between Mayweather and  50 Cent have been rife ever since Mayweather was released from prison.

Pacquiao’s adivsor, Michael Konz told Boxing  Scene: ’50 Cent and I have been talking now for maybe the last two months. They  approached us with the idea to form a promotional company.

‘Initially it was going to be 50 Cent, Manny  and Floyd. But right now I don’t think Floyd is going to be a part of it. I  explained the idea to Manny.

‘We already have a promotional company, MP  Promotions, and we have already done three separate promotions from Top  Rank…on a small scale. I have to take the blame for that.

‘I’m in charge of it. There is an element  missing there, but I have so much to do with Manny – that I haven’t got that  company to where I want it.

‘I think with 50 Cent, with his entertainment  connections and his popularity there, combining that with Manny’s popularity and  expertise in boxing – we can bring a new flavor to boxing – we can excite some  young boxers and I think we can sign some top quality boxers.

‘I spoke to 50 Cent tonight and confirmed  that we’re going to go forward.

‘Manny is coming here this weekend for other  business, but we’re all excited about it. With 50′s influence in the music  industry – we want to put a different flavor on the shows.’

50 Cent told Power 105.1 there is no problem  between himself and Mayweather and does not think working with Pacquiao will  cause trouble.

‘I think he’ll (Mayweather) go “I wish him  luck”… It’s not like I’m not in communication with him. I texted him and told  him everything.’

Mayweather had set up a promotional company  with 50 Cent, known as TMT (The Money Team).

The company was said in some quarters to have  the possibility to change the boxing scene but it’s website has now been taken  down and the venture looks finished.

Pacquiao, meanwhile, is set to face Juan  Marquez in December and wants to put an end to any doubts regarding his  superiority over his opponent.

Three bouts in eight years have not resolved  the rivalry so they meet again on December 8 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las  Vegas.

$100,000, SIX-FIGURE SALARY: NOT A BIG ‘BAG OF MONEY’ ANYMORE!!!

One hundred thousand dollars. Since the 1980s, the magical “six-figure”  salary has been a benchmark for financial success. Not too long ago, that income  often meant two nice cars in the garage of a large house, fun family vacations  and plenty of money left over to save for retirement and college tuition.

But times have changed. Not only has standard inflation steadily eroded the  real value of a $100,000 income, but the cost, of housing, health insurance and  college tuition have risen dramatically in recent years. Consider the rising  costs of food, energy and the necessities of a middle class life, and that  six-figure luxury quickly turns to six-figure mediocrity.

Less than 20 percent of American households even break the six figures. But  many who earn incomes near the mark find that their prized incomes don’t take  them as far as the hype. Many say that while breaking the $100,000 annual income  mark may still be an impressive milestone, it doesn’t exactly roll out the red  carpet.

Costs eat away at benchmark

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, only 6.03 percent of individual over 18  and only 19.9 percent of households had incomes of $100,000 or more in 2010. In  fact, the median annual household income for 2010 was $50,046, just more than  half of the six-figure benchmark. The overwhelming majority of Americans still  look up to a $100,000 income, but the expectations of what comes with that  income are rapidly slumping.

“Without a doubt, the housing situation is the biggest  thing that eats into our income.” — Brian Neale, investment manager

According to Labor Department statistics, the average inflation rate for 2011  was the worst since 2008, with consumer prices rising 3.1 percent, compared to  an average of 1.6 percent in 2010. Much of this was fueled by energy costs (up  15.2 percent for the year) and food costs (up 3.7 percent for the year). Just to  keep up with standard inflation, a $100,000 salary in 1990 would have to be  $172,103.29 in 2011.

WHITES ARE 22 TIMES WEALTHIER THAN BLACKS….DAMN!!!!

White Americans have 22 times more wealth than blacks — a gap that nearly doubled during the Great Recession.

The median household net worth for whites was $110,729 in 2010, versus $4,995 for blacks, according to recently released Census Bureau figures.

The difference is similarly notable when it comes to Hispanics, who had a median household net worth of $7,424. The ratio between white and Hispanic wealth expanded to 15 to 1.

The gap between the races widened considerably during the recent economic downturn, which whites weathered better than blacks, Hispanics and Asians.

The latter three groups saw their median household net worth fall by roughly 60% between 2005 and 2010, while the median net worth for white households slipped only 23%.

This allowed whites to leap ahead of Asians as the race with the highest median household net worth.

CNN iReport: Are you feeling the drop in net worth?

The racial wealth divide is nothing new. Black and Hispanic Americans have historically had lower incomes, higher unemployment and less education.

That makes it more difficult for these groups to save money and put their capital to work building wealth, said Tatjana Meschede, research director of the Institute on Assets and Social Policy at Brandeis University.

The Great Recession exacerbated the problem. In 2005, the net worth difference wasn’t quite as stark. Whites had 12 times more wealth than blacks and 8 times more than Hispanics.

The main reason blacks and Hispanics did not fare as well during the economic downturn is that home equity makes up more of their wealth than it does for whites. The housing bubble that preceded the collapse pushed up homeownership rates among blacks and Hispanics, who relied more heavily on high-cost subprime loans to finance their purchases.

As a result, the implosion of the real estate market had a more devastating impact on black and Hispanic communities.

Asians, meanwhile, are more concentrated on the West Coast, which was hit harder by the mortgage meltdown. And the arrival of new Asian immigrants in the last decade contributed to the decline in overall wealth, according to Rakesh Kochhar, co-author of the Pew Research Center report on wealth.

Pew found that in 2005, home equity made up nearly two-thirds of the net worth of Hispanics and 59% of blacks, but only 44% of whites.

Blacks and Hispanics are also less likely to have assets in the financial system, such as savings accounts or stocks, Kochhar said.

And these groups also suffer from far higher unemployment rates than whites, whose unemployment rate is 7.4%, below the national average. Blacks, on the other hand, have a 13.6% unemployment rate and Hispanics, 11%.

LESBIAN AND GAY SUPPORTERS OF BARACK OBAMA RAISE INSANE AMOUNTS OF MONEY

This just in…if you show me love, I will show you love right back!! This is the reason for the INSANE amounts of money raise by the Lesbian Gay and Transgender for Brack Obama’s presidential campaign.

After President Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage, a group organizing a fundraiser on his behalf suddenly had to find a bigger venue. The event, featuring the pop singer Pink, is one of two LGBT-organized fundraisers Obama is expected to attend on the West Coast on Wednesday.

A CNN analysis of President Obama’s biggest fundraisers, known as bundlers, shows that at least 33 — or about one in every 16 bundlers — is openly gay. Together, they have raised at least $8 million for the campaign between January and the end of March.

By contrast, in the same period, bundlers from the television, movie and music industry, some of whom attended a recent high-profile fundraiser hosted by actor George Clooney, raised $6.8 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Interactive: Celebrities back candidates for president

While campaign finance laws require donors to disclose their full names, addresses, occupations and employers, there is no box to check for sexual orientation. Nor does the law require candidates to release information about their bundlers. Under prodding from watchdog groups, presidential campaigns have released bundler data in past elections. Obama’s campaign has released its list. Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s campaign has not.

In CNN’s analysis, only bundlers who have disclosed their orientation in past CNN reporting or in trusted LGBT publications were counted as gay. The Washington Post has reported that as many as one in six bundlers supporting Obama are gay. The Advocate Magazine estimates one in five.

Glancing down the names on the bundlers list released by the Obama campaign for the first quarter, it is easy to find people known for their work on behalf of the LGBT community.

Tim Gill, a software entrepreneur who runs a large Colorado-based foundation that backs gay rights projects, has already contributed $672,800 with his partner Scott Miller to the Obama for America campaign. Fred Eychaner, who owns the Chicago-based Newsweb Corp., has donated $1,220,550 so far.

He co-hosted a $35,800-per-person LGBT organized fundraiser for Obama in February. Kathy Levinson, the former president and CEO of the Menlo Park, California-based Etrade, gave $202,150. The LA Gay and Lesbian Center Women’s Night named Levinson a “Community Role Model” in 2000. She was instrumental in raising money to stop the anti-same-sex marriage law in California.

Donations made after Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage May 9 won’t be released until mid-June, when the campaign files its second-quarter reports with the Federal Election Commission.

Many LGBT bundlers have maintained a close relationship with the president throughout his first term. A state dinner in March was attended by bundlers Gill; Eychaner; Barry Karas, a former Human Rights Campaign board member; James (Wally) Brewster, senior vice president of General Growth Properties, a real estate investment trust that owns and operates shopping malls; Dana Perlman, a corporate lawyer who has served as co-chair of the Obama/DNC LGBT Leadership Council; Joseph Falk, a Miami mortgage broker and others.

Support for Obama from the LGBT community was challenged after the initial excitement of his first campaign, largely because of what was perceived as his lukewarm support on same-sex marriage. Some say a low point came during the election in 2008, when evangelist pastor Rick Warren asked Obama how he defined marriage and he called it “a union between a man and a woman.” He added: “For me as a Christian, it is a sacred union. God’s in the mix.” He further angered the community by picking Warren to deliver his invocation at the presidential inauguration.

Actor Alan Cumming wrote in 2010, “We keep hearing that Obama is an ally, that DADT [the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy that kept LGBT people from openly serving in the military] will end under his watch, but what do we actually get? Diddly squat.”

Dustin Lance Black, who won a best screenplay Oscar for “Milk,” a movie biography of the gay San Francisco politician Harvey Milk who was gunned down because of his sexual orientation, said last year that he had been an Obama supporter before but might sit out the upcoming election. When President Obama finally signed the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” and “evolved” in his position on marriage by saying he was in favor of it for the LGBT community, both Black and Cumming did more than just say they supported the president. They donated money. They also encouraged others to do the same.

David Mixner, who started one of the first LGBT-themed PACs in the late 1970s, said the community has come a long way in being accepted in electoral politics. “We had some candidates who wouldn’t take our money back then because they didn’t want to be associated with anyone who was gay,” Mixner said. He said he believes that changed with the Clinton administration, which the PAC raised $4 million to support. “Now the community knows how to raise money and contribute on their own and we are more than welcome at the table.”

The LGBT community is such an important part of this president’s re-election effort that the Obama for America campaign hosts a special section for it on its website. It includes a video discussing the president’s support for LGBT issues narrated by actress Jane Lynch, who is openly gay. It also offers Obama merchandise like T-shirts and drink koozies to bring to Gay Pride events this summer.

The president has already attended several LGBT-organized fundraisers, including one in New York hosted by openly gay singer Ricky Martin, the Futuro Fund, and Obama for America LGBT Leadership Council.

Another event in Washington, hosted by Karen K. Dixon and her partner, Dr. Nan Schaffer, was rumored to have raised more than a million dollars for the campaign, although the Obama team won’t comment on the record about fundraising. Tickets for one of the California events were selling so well the campaign had to find a larger venue. There also is great interest in a Chicago fundraiser co-hosted by LGBT bundlers Brewster and Bob Satawake. The couple has already raised $288,663, according to the CNN analysis.

“I think there has always been a strong base of support from LGBT people for the president,” said Michael Cole-Schwartz, spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, whose incoming president Chad Griffin is a bundler. “He earned even more respect from the community — from repealing ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’ to signing the hate crimes law giving the first civil rights protection for us in federal law, to coming out against DOMA,” the Defense of Marriage Act that defines marriage for federal purposes as unions exclusively between a man and a woman. “Now, with his saying he believes in full marriage equality, we have another reason for people in our community to be generous with their time and money.”

It is difficult to know if there are any openly gay bundlers for the Republicans, because Romney has not disclosed his bundler list.

The Republican candidate has, however, voiced his opposition to civil unions and supports a federal amendment to the U.S. Constitution to deny same-sex couples the right to marry.

But some gay Republicans say Romney is not totally close minded on LGBT issues. “On gay issues, where Romney stands is not as black and white as it seems,” said R. Clarke Cooper, executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans, an organization for gay and lesbian Republicans. “One thing he has been consistent on, as governor and as a candidate for president, is he has spoken in broad terms about ending discrimination in the workplace. He has said there is no room for it.”

Cooper said the Log Cabin Republicans haven’t decided yet if they will endorse Romney. That announcement will come sometime this fall. He does believe, though, that there are gay donors to Romney’s campaign. They just might not be as outspoken.

“We joke that at Pride (festivals), the question we most often ask other Republicans we see there is, ‘Are you out?’ Meaning ‘out’ about your politics yet.”

TERRELL OWEN’S PROBLEMS MOUNT – RELEASED BY INDOOR FOOTBALL TEAM

I have always loved Terrell Owens as a football player. Unfortunately, he is set to self destruct in 5-4-3-2-1.. His gifts as a football player  and two seasons of his highly rated, self-titled  TV show (The T.O. Show), were not enough to slow down his downward spiral. Terrell hasn’t had much success with controlling his emotions and his money. A recent article said that he is broke and now he gets cut by an Indoor Football team. Come on T.O.!! Get it together!!

Read  More..

Terrell Owens’ tenure in the Indoor Football League came to an unceremonious end Tuesday when the Allen Wranglers released the controversial former NFL receiver.

Owens signed with the Wranglers in February, receiving a six-figure salary and an ownership stake in the franchise located about 30 minutes north of Dallas. Owner Jon Frankel said Owens’ ownership stake has been terminated because he violated his contract.

Frankel cited Owens’ refusal to play in two upcoming road games that are critical to the Wranglers’ playoff hopes and Owens’ no-show for a scheduled appearance at a local children’s hospital as the breaking points in the team’s relationship with the receiver.

“Our fans are amongst the best in the league, and it is impossible to maintain a player when even our fans notice and comment on a player’s lack of effort both on and off the field,” Frankel said in a statement released to ESPNDallas.com. “We need to do what is best for this team, our fans and this community.”

Owens, who was not required to play in all of the Wranglers’ road games, released a statement through his publicist late Tuesday night. “I appreciate the opportunity that Mr. Frankel gave me and wish the Allen Wranglers all the best moving forward,” he said.

The statement called the manner in which Owens was released “unfortunate.” It said Owens played all games according to his contract and that his legal team is addressing details of the Wranglers’ news release but that Owens’ representatives could not comment beyond that. It also said Owens is focused on returning to the NFL.

The 38-year-old Owens, whose tenures with the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys all ended acrimoniously, had hoped that playing for the Wranglers could help him get back in the NFL. He received no interest from NFL teams last season despite ranking second all-time in receiving yards (15,934), fourth in touchdowns (156) and sixth in catches (1,078).

Wranglers general manager and former Cowboys great Drew Pearson believes Owens could still play in the NFL, if his performance was the only indicator.

“It’s very difficult to get back into the NFL, especially at that age,” Pearson told the “Ben & Skin Show” on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM on Wednesday morning. “To me, there’s no question he could play in the NFL. When I see these receivers that are playing, there is no question Terrell could still play in the NFL. But it’s not what happens between the lines with Terrell, unfortunately. It’s how he handles things outside the lines.”

Owens played one season each for the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals after being released by the Cowboys after the 2008 season despite being one year into a four-year, $34 million contract extension. He caught 72 passes for 983 yards and nine touchdowns for the Bengals in 2010.

After Owens recovered from knee surgery to repair a torn ACL he suffered after the 2010 season, agent Drew Rosenhaus organized a nationally televised workout to prove his client was healthy. No scouts attended the workout.

Owens caught 35 passes for 420 yards and 10 touchdowns in eight games for the Wranglers.

“It’s disappointing and unfortunate,” Frankel said of releasing Owens, “but [he] could no longer be tolerated by the Wrangler organization.”

IT’S NOT HOW MUCH YOU MAKE, IT’S HOW MUCH YOU SAVE: 5 WAYS TO SAVE MORE MONEY

Like so many things in life, setting money aside as savings is a habit that needs to be developed. If you want to see your nest egg grow, you need to do what you can to encourage a savings habit. Setting money aside needs to become a way of life, instead of some sort of burden. If you are having trouble getting into the habit of saving, you should try these 5 ways to keep you motivated:

1. Set Achievable Savings Goals

One of the biggest issues is that you may not have a goal. You just have an idea that you need to save money, but there is no true purpose for your money. It’s hard to stay motivated when you have no clear idea of what the money is for. So it is much easier just to spend it.

Instead of pointlessly saving, create achievable savings goals that give purpose to your money. Whether you want to save $5,000 in the next six months for a vacation, or whether you want to save up five months of expenses by the end of the year for your emergency fund, having a realistic goal gives you something to work toward — and progress you can see.

2. Reward Yourself for Reaching Small Milestones

Depending on the length of your goal, you can reward yourself at certain milestones. This helps you track your progress, and also helps keep you motivated to continue saving. These rewards should be fun things that you might not normally do, but that are still small and within reason. It might be a day off (if you can take a personal day at work), a picnic in the park, dinner at a nicer restaurant than usual, or some other enjoyable activity. Just don’t blow all your savings while enjoying your small reward.

3. Automate Your Savings

One of the easiest ways to get into the habit of saving is to set up some automatic method of moving your money around. Whether you have money from your paycheck automatically deposited into a savings account (including a retirement account), or whether you do an automatic transfer each month, automatically having your savings moved around can help you adjust your lifestyle to what you end up as “take home” pay. Soon you won’t miss the money, but it will still grow and work for you.

4. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

Always denying yourself the small treats you enjoy, and focusing on penny pinching, can bring you to hate saving. While you can cut back on some of those small expenses that eventually add up, you might actually feel better about saving if you focus on cutting back on the big expenses. Forgoing the big TV is an one time thing that can save you $700 to $2,000. And you can still get good entertainment on your current TV, or use the Internet. You will probably find that you will get over the TV pretty quickly and move on. However, constantly telling yourself that you can’t get that delicious $2 bagel you love can start to create resentful feelings toward saving. It’s a daily litany of denial that can start to make saving a chore.

5. Look for High Yield Accounts

One of the most depressing things about savings is how slowly the money grows. You can increase your satisfaction with savings by looking for high yield accounts. While yields are still generally low, you can still do better than the less than 1% offered by a traditional savings account. You can also look for alternative products like money market accounts and funds, high-yield CDs and bonds. However, be aware that some of these options may not be FDIC-insured, and come with greater risk.

Bottom line: Setting aside money for the future is important, but you need to find ways to keep yourself motivated. Do any of these things work for you? What keeps you motivated to save?

MAYWEATHER IS GUARANTEED TO MAKE A RECORD $32 MILLION TO FIGHT COTTO-HIGHEST PURSE EVER

Las Vegas—

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is guaranteed a purse of at least $32 million, the Nevada State Athletic Commission reported Friday, a record guarantee tally for the unbeaten five-division champion who’ll fight Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Mayweather’s pay, based on his cut of advance pay-per-view sales, will go higher when total pay-per-view buys are tallied. HBO is charging $69.95 for the bout, a World Boxing Assn. super-welterweight title defense for Cotto (37-2, 30 KOs).

Fight promoter Richard Schaefer said this week that the bout could generate more than 1.5 million buys.

The prior Nevada record for a fighter’s guaranteed purse was $30 million, accomplished three times by Mike Tyson in both of his fights against Evander Holyfield and another against Frank Bruno.

The combined guaranteed purses of Mayweather and Cotto, who’ll get $8 million, fell $1 million short of Nevada’s total purse record, still held by Tyson and Holyfield in their June 1997 rematch at the MGM Grand, when Holyfield earned $11 million.
