MANNY PACQUAIO KNOCKED OUT BY MARQUEZ IN MARQUEZ-PACQUAIO IV

There was one second left in the sixth round of Saturday’s big fight in Vegas  between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao, one of the best boxers  in the world, had been picking apart his old nemesis Marquez with darty punches  that the Mexican, an expert counter-puncher, couldn’t seem to counter. The  Filipino fighter had connected on 94 punches to Marquez’s 52, had broken his  opponent’s nose and dropped him in the previous round. Marquez was bleeding  profusely and having trouble breathing. All three judges had Pacquiao winning  47-46 through five rounds.

Then in the dying moments of round six, the two men started exchanging  furious punches near the ropes. Marquez feinted left and threw one of the most  vicious short rights in recent boxing history, hitting Pacquiao flush in the  face and sending him to the canvas, right in front of Mitt and Ann  Romney’s ringside seats (“I couldn’t believe it, he went down right in front  of me!” Ann said later.) It seemed oddly appropriate: Romney knows all about  clear defeats emerging dramatically after close and tough battles. And Pacquiao  is a politician–a congressman with presidential ambitions in his native Philippines.

There was exaltation from Marquez, all sprinkled with blood, from his  cornermen and from the mostly pro-Marquez crowd at the MGM Grand. But the  obvious end of the match was also chilling because Pacquiao, seemingly  invincible once upon a time, was so slow to revive. His corner put a white wet  towel over him and started massaging his head as his weeping wife Jinkee–whose  name is tattooed on his arm–struggled into the ring and to his side. Eventually  regaining consciousness, Pacquiao said, “I got hit by a punch I didn’t see.” His  eyes were still glazed over.

It felt like the end of Manny Pacquaio. This is the second fight he has lost  this year. Despite his dominance of Marquez through most of the fight, he looked  just slightly more timid than the Pacquiao of old; his legs didn’t move along  with their typical bounce; he had been knocked down in round three, the first  time that had happened in years and an omen for the way the struggling Marquez  would finish the match. One of the smartest men in boxing, Marquez was setting  up his KO.

The punch that ended the fight would bring a resounding conclusion to one of  the bitterest rivalries in sports. Until Saturday, Marquez could claim to have  been cheated by history. Considered the sixth best pound-for-pound boxer in the  world, he fought Pacquiao to a controversial draw in 2004; he then lost a  split-decision (by one point) in their 2008 re-match. Marquez again lost to  Pacquiao in a 2011 controversy. At the conclusion of that fight, when the judges  ruled that Pacquiao had won, the Filipino was greeted by thunderous boos.  Marquez, disgusted, stormed out of the ring, believing he had won. He would  prove he deserved victory by knockout at the end of round six of their fourth  encounter–one of the most exciting in recent years, an instant classic.

It might not have happened. After their 2011 match, Pacquiao was moving onto  younger fighters and bigger paydays, and maybe—just maybe—an eventual superfight  with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

But earlier this year Pacquiao lost a controversial decision to Timothy  Bradley. While Pacquiao lost on the judges’ scorecards, the boxing public  believed he had soundly beaten Bradley—who was wheeled into the post-fight press  conference in a wheelchair. But since Mayweather and Pacquiao’s promoters never  seem able to negotiate their fight for various reasons–most nonsensical–Pacquiao  decided to take on Marquez again. And as the Filipino’s coach Freddie Roach  says, “He walked into a two-inch punch.” Pacquiao hadn’t been knocked out since  1999.

He might retire. He might fight Marquez for a fifth time. But what is clear:  that punch will permanently alter the way Pacquiao is viewed as a boxer,  politician and cross-cultural star.

As a fighter, he relied on his speed to create punching angles and then  quickly move out of range of his opponent.  But as he aged, he wasn’t quite  getting out of counter-attacks as much. In training camp, there was talk of  Pacquiao knocking out his sparring partners, but other, quieter stories of  missed training runs and a lack of dedication to his strength and fitness  regime.  To many who know him well, he seemed more interested in Bible  study than the sweet science. There were also uneasy questions from his own  countryman about his dedication to the Philippines’ fervent Catholicism, sensing  a turn toward evangelical “born again” Protestantism. Indeed, there were some  snarky tweets that his defeat may have been the result of not performing what  had seemed to be a pre-fight ritual: kneeling in a corner and making the  Catholic sign of the cross. Pacquiao seems to be writing a different—more  complex—storyline to his life, and it hasn’t been easy to digest by his  countrymen. And the latest loss may shake the faith of his many non-Filipino  fans who have made him a global brand–but one based on winning and  invincibility.

After the fight, Pacquiao readily confessed to over-confidence, believing the  bloodied Marquez to be on his last legs. However, Roach, himself an icon of  perseverance because of his public struggle with Parkinson’s, said that, though  Pacquiao looked careless at times, the end is not nigh. “If I see signs of him  declining, I will tell him to retire. I don’t think this is the end of Manny  Pacquiao, no.” It was simply a mistake. He did not see the punch coming. That  says a lot for Pacquiao’s vision. In Marquez’s view, he had it coming.

50 CENT PARTNERS WITH MANNY PACQUAIO: LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

American rapper 50 Cent has posted a picture  of himself with boxer Manny Pacquiao along with the words ‘Big business moves’  which could impact on his relationship with the Filipino’s rival Floyd  Mayweather.

Rumours about a rift between Mayweather and  50 Cent have been rife ever since Mayweather was released from prison.

Pacquiao’s adivsor, Michael Konz told Boxing  Scene: ’50 Cent and I have been talking now for maybe the last two months. They  approached us with the idea to form a promotional company.

‘Initially it was going to be 50 Cent, Manny  and Floyd. But right now I don’t think Floyd is going to be a part of it. I  explained the idea to Manny.

‘We already have a promotional company, MP  Promotions, and we have already done three separate promotions from Top  Rank…on a small scale. I have to take the blame for that.

‘I’m in charge of it. There is an element  missing there, but I have so much to do with Manny – that I haven’t got that  company to where I want it.

‘I think with 50 Cent, with his entertainment  connections and his popularity there, combining that with Manny’s popularity and  expertise in boxing – we can bring a new flavor to boxing – we can excite some  young boxers and I think we can sign some top quality boxers.

‘I spoke to 50 Cent tonight and confirmed  that we’re going to go forward.

‘Manny is coming here this weekend for other  business, but we’re all excited about it. With 50′s influence in the music  industry – we want to put a different flavor on the shows.’

50 Cent told Power 105.1 there is no problem  between himself and Mayweather and does not think working with Pacquiao will  cause trouble.

Sports links: American Olympic swimmer Conor Dwyer with 50 CentSports links: American Olympic swimmer Conor Dwyer with  50 Cent

‘I think he’ll (Mayweather) go “I wish him  luck”… It’s not like I’m not in communication with him. I texted him and told  him everything.’

Mayweather had set up a promotional company  with 50 Cent, known as TMT (The Money Team).

The company was said in some quarters to have  the possibility to change the boxing scene but it’s website has now been taken  down and the venture looks finished.

Pacquiao, meanwhile, is set to face Juan  Marquez in December and wants to put an end to any doubts regarding his  superiority over his opponent.

Three bouts in eight years have not resolved  the rivalry so they meet again on December 8 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las  Vegas.

MANNY PACQUAIO: GOD TOLD ME TO RETIRE…BUT NOT YET

This kind of statement will not make any promoter or any investor or endorser feel good about an athlete. Statements such as this will make promoters such as Bob Aram and endorsers like Nike rethink their position on backing Manny Pacquaio. I believe that this was the reason why Timothy Bradley was granted the win in his bout with former champion Manny Pacquaio. The problem here is that it does not make business sense to back an athlete whose decision to go on or retire is based on “what God tells him”. Like St. Augustine’s prayer “God make me chaste – but not yet,” Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao’s personal conversation with God may not lead to his retirement anytime soon.

Pacquiao said in a radio interview on Monday he had a dream in which God had told him to hang up his gloves, fueling speculation he may back out of a long-anticipated fight with American Floyd Mayweather.

“I will not stay long in boxing because He said: ‘You have done enough. You have made yourself famous but this is harmful’,” he told Manila’s DZMM radio.

However, his team say retirement is still a long way off.

“A few years ago the pressure for him to retire was coming from his mother,” Pacquiao’s business manager Eric Pineda told CNN. “But recently he dreamt that God told him to retire but there’s nothing definite about his retirement either this year or next year.

“This year it’s out of the question,” Pineda said. “And I’m not even sure about next year either.”

He said a Mayweather fight would be up to the Mayweather camp, but that Pacquiao was more than ready to meet him in the ring.

“Manny is a fighter and there is still the desire,” Pineda said. “He really wants this thing with Mayweather to happen.

“He doesn’t want to retire leaving unanswered questions.”

Pacquiao, 33, has a 54-3 win-loss record with two draws and plans to pit his World Boxing Organization welterweight crown against undefeated American Timothy Bradley in Las Vegas on June 9.

Boxing fans have long sought a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao. The pair were in negotiations for a fight to be held later this year but talks fell through. The 34-year-old American boxer has won all 42 of his professional fights, 26 by knockout.

Manny is a fighter and there is still the desire eric pineda

“People are clamoring for this fight — and it will probably be bigger than the Ali/Frazier fight. Manny still wants to prove to himself that he can beat Mayweather,” Pineda added.

Pacquiao also has an ongoing defamation suit against Mayweather, claiming the American fighter has insinuated that his success is the result of performance-enhancing drugs.

Pacquiao is the first boxer in the sport’s history to have won world titles in eight weight divisions and recently launched a successful political career after being elected to the Philippine House of Representatives in June 2010.

Formerly a heavy gambler and late-night party-goer, Philippines media reported in February that Pacquiao had renewed his commitment to his faith, shutting down a restaurant and bar he owned, selling shares in a casino and nightclub and selling his cockfighting gamecocks.

Floyd Mayweather has overtaken Tiger Woods at the top of Forbes magazine’s list of the 100 highest-paid sports personalities over the past year.

Boxer Mayweather, currently serving a three-month jail sentence for domestic assault, made $85m (£54.25m) – a figure bolstered by promoting his own fights.

Woods had topped the Forbes list since 2001 but saw a drop in his earnings of $16m (£10.21m) from the previous year and was down by half from his peak in 2009.

He has suffered a tail off in endorsements since then as a result of being embroiled in a sex scandal.

Miami Heat star LeBron James ranks fourth at $53m (£33.84m), the highest of 13 basketball players and on the list. Swiss tennis star Roger Federer was fifth at $52.7m (£33.64m).

MANNY PACQUAIO GETS ROBBED IN A SPLIT DECISION AGAINST TIMOTHY BRADLEY

I’ve seen a lot of things in boxing, but last night’s fight between Manny Pacquaio and Timothy Bradley was by far the one of the greatest robberies of all time. I have attached a copy of the scorecard to this post. How could they do this? This is why MMA is kicking boxing’s ass. Check out the scorecard below…

After 12 rounds of Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley, it seemed as though everyone in the world had witnessed Pacquiao’s 55th victory.

Then, the three judges at ringside got their say:

  • Judge Jerry Roth:  Pacquiao 115-113 Bradley
  • Judge C.J. Ross: Pacquiao 113-115 Bradley
  • Judge Duane Ford: Pacquiao 113-115 Bradley

In one of the most shocking upsets in boxing history, Bradley defeated Pacquiao by split decision to take the WBO welterweight title.

Official Pacquiao-Bradley Scorecards

This should be the greatest night of Bradley’s life. A night where fans applaud his gutsy performance, against one of boxing’s greatest fighters of all time.

Instead, his career-defining moment will forever be tarnished by controversy.

How could judges give rounds to Bradley where he was out-punched and out-worked? How can so many people see a fight one way and have those who ultimately matter see it completely the opposite?

Unfortunately, this is nothing new. Welcome to the sport of boxing.

The sport has lost credibility with fans largely due to contentious decisions. Fights are subjective, where one “qualified” official decides who controls the action and based on a historical point system who is declared the winner.

But, it seems, each judge has his or her own interpretation of what a winning fighter looks like. What is effective aggression? How does someone show ring generalship? One judge seeing a fighter “running” is another judge’s “defensive counter puncher.”

We know boxing isn’t perfect; the judging system will probably always be flawed. But, decisions like Pacquiao-Bradley are unacceptable.

So, where does this leave these two fighters?

Both men fight under the Top Rank umbrella. With Bob Arum promoting the two boxers, negotiations should be quick and painless. The rematch should take place in November.

Hopefully, we get a boxing classic. A rematch for the ages.  It’s the least the fight can do to make up for what their first encounter produced…

A black eye to the entire sport.

THE FIGHT’S ON! GAME 7 HEAT vs CELTICS AND PACQUIAO vs BRADLEY @ BOUNCE DOWNTOWN NYC

It’s on tonite!! I’m listening to Rick Ross and getting ready to head to Bounce Downtown NYC to watch two match-ups tonight. It’s going to be a night filled with intensity and testosterone. First, it will be game 7 of the eastern conference finals between Lebron James’ Miami Heat and Paul Pierce’s Boston Celtics. As you know, Lebron single handedly  destroyed the Boston Celtics in game 6 and dropped 45 points on them. The Boston Celtics are not going to take that lying down, so it will be an explosion.

This will be followed the Welterweight title fight between Timothy Bradley and Manny Pacquiao. Tiomothy Bradley looked hungry and strong last night at the weigh-in in Las Vegas. Manny looked a bit softer and insecure while looking at Bradley’s ridiculously ripped abs. It’s going to be an explosion as well. Both guys come to fight and there will be fireworks when they meet in the middle!! Somebody is getting knocked out!!!!!!

Where are you watching the fight?

MANNY PACQUAIO IS BORN AGAIN. WILL HE STILL BE RUTHLESS IN THE RING?

HOLLYWOOD — I came to ask a different kind of question, because virtually every other one about Manny Pacquiao has been answered.

Since Pacquiao rose to prominence — most point to his 2008 win over Oscar De La Hoya as the fight that elevated the Filipino puncher to superstar status — he has been covered backward and forward, by blogs and newspapers, magazines and television shows. We know about his days as a stringy 98-pounder who put rocks in his pockets just to make the 105-pound minimum. We know about his partnership with Freddie Roach, who molded a raw bundle of power into a polished champion. We know about his political ambitions, which include a stop in the Filipino Congress and possibly a run for Governor of his province next year.

We know it all. When you are making $25-plus million per fight and routinely registering over 1 million pay-per-view buys, you get more complete coverage than a presidential candidate does.

But there is a new twist to Pacquiao. He has undergone a religious awakening these last eight months, morphing from, as he described himself to me, “an immoral man” into a deeply religious one. He has gone from a man who indulged in heavy drinking, gambling and womanizing to a committed one who has eliminated every vice from his life.

Good for him, I thought to myself a couple of weeks ago. I won’t delve too deep into Pacquiao’s personal issues here — pick up this week’s Sports Illustrated for more on that — but it was clear his life had spun out of control. Too many athletes have been sucked in by the trappings of celebrity only to find themselves broke and alone later in life, and by cleaning up his act, by trading the bottle for Bible study, Pacquiao may have avoided a similar fate.

But a question lingered: With a showdown with unbeaten Timothy Bradley on Saturday, (9 p.m. ET, HBO PPV) would a kinder, gentler Pacquiao be the same killer in the ring?

The short answer: Yes.

Sitting with Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, at the front desk of his Wild Card gym last week — a desk Roach still sits at every day and collects $5 fees from anyone interested in using the facility — I learned that Roach had the same question. I learned that when Roach initially heard of Pacquiao’s transformation, when he started hearing Pacquiao whisper about not wanting to hurt people, when he started seeing his fighter order his entourage to memorize Bible verses, he thought Pacquiao should quit. Boxing is a violent sport, Roach reasoned, and if you don’t have a taste for violence anymore, you should get out.

But what Roach has seen from Pacquiao this camp has surprised him. The religious transformation hasn’t hurt Pacquiao’s boxing; if anything, it has improved it. Roach says Pacquiao is a fresher fighter when he comes to the gym. Freed from the mental toll taken by a strained marriage, he is more focused.

“His focus is very good,” Roach said. “We don’t have days where he comes in tired, because he has no nightlife whatsoever, besides the Bible study. He is very focused on the fight. He and God are very close right now and he is just a better athlete, with no distractions.”

Said his promoter, Bob Arum, “From somebody who has visited the training camp a few times, the difference in Manny’s face is so apparent. He’s not as tired as he was and he’s not as worn as he was. There is a glow in his face. I think this religious awakening has been all good on his part. I am a little prejudiced because I am religious myself but I believe when young athletes find religion it will greatly enhance their careers.”

But what about the violence of boxing? How can someone so committed to the Bible reconcile its teachings with a sport where you are trying to inflict as much damage as possible?

“I look at boxing as a sport,” said Pacquiao’s pastor, Jeric Soriano. “It’s his platform. It has made him who he is. I tell him, ‘Be the most excellent you can be.’ Just as long as he is following the rules, go for it. As far as hurting people, that’s the sport. You’re allowed to punch each other out. We don’t hurt people outside the ring. We help people. We don’t cut people down or speak ugly of them. But in the ring, what he is doing is fine.”

There is one thing that concerns Roach, and it has nothing to do with Pacquiao’s religion. In recent fights, Pacquiao has experienced leg cramps that have hindered his mobility. After the last fight, with Juan Manuel Marquez, Roach suggested Pacquiao see doctors at UCLA to determine what was causing the problem. Pacquiao chose to go a different route.

“I went to his people and said, ‘Let’s take him to a real doctor,’” Roach said. “They told me they had it covered. I still don’t know what they did. The problem is he never haves the cramps during training. It’s only during a fight. Maybe it’s mental, maybe it’s something else. But I would have addressed the issue differently than how he did it.”

Roach admits Pacquiao has slowed some. To keep him fresh he has cut his sparring rounds and replaced Pacquiao’s longtime sparring partners with new ones because the relationships had become too friendly. “We’ve got two Russians now,” Roach said. “And they don’t speak English.”

Roach calls Bradley a good fighter but doesn’t think he is in Pacquiao’s league. “I have been watching Bradley a lot and he doesn’t rely very much on counterpunching,” Roach said. “He is very offensive. He comes to fight, which will make it a good fight for everybody. We have the game plan set after watching many, many tapes of Bradley. Manny should have a very good fight on Saturday.”

MANNY PACQUIAO, WORLD CHAMPION BOXER, REBUKES OBAMA’S SUPPORT FOR GAY MARRIAGE

I think that there is a problem when a man concerns themselves with what another man is doing in the bedroom. I have always been a fan of world champion boxer Manny Pacquaio. I think Manny is a great fighter. He has risen through several weight classes, winning world championship belts, all the way up. His fast, hard punching, forward marching style is always entertaining to watch. I disagree with Manny Pacquiao on this. The foundation of Christaian belief and indeed any belief at all, is to love thy neighbor.

If you missed it, Pacquiao told the National Conservative Examiner that he doesn’t agree with the president. He then cited Leviticus 20:13, telling the publication that “if a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads”

Many Christians feel the same way about same sex marriage that Manny feels, but that does not go along with love thy neighbor. I was raised very strict catholic and read the Bible extensively. As far as I can remember, I don’t remember anywhere in the Bible where Jesus talks about gay people or his lack of support for it.

I think there’s a problem when another man begins to concern themselves with what another man does in the bedroom.
