LAGOS, NIGERIA: BOMB SCARE ON LAGOS BOUND AERO FLGHT

A passenger on board a Lagos bound Aero aircraft suspected to be of a strange character caused a bomb scare at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Friday, after he attempted to disembark from the plane which was at the point of taking off. The passenger’s action rose the suspicion of others on board who thought he had planted a bomb in the plane, a reason he had to struggle to disembark before the plane could take off.

Trouble started when the suspect insisted he must disembark, damning all pleas by hostesses, a development which prompted the captain’s immediate intervention. The captain, Mrs Ebele Okay, according to officials of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), resolved to call for arrest of the odd passenger who was described as haggard looking to douse tension in the plane. The captain, in addition, asked every passenger on board to disembark for a second round of screening as part of measures aimed at restoring the confidence of all passengers already booked for the 3.00 pm flight to Lagos.

The incident resulted in the Lagos bound passengers numbering 150 wasting several hours. The Aero airline was initially booked for departure at 12.00pm, before the flight hour was shifted by the management on weather condition. But while the suspected passenger was arrested for interrogation and screening by security officials, the other passengers stood their ground not to board the plane again. Sensing that the passengers’ action may disrupt the airline’s opreations for the day, a combined team of FAAN officials, police airport security, the anti-bomb unit and the Aero Airline management moved to address the passengers with assurances that proper screening had been conducted on every department of the plane and baggages of every passenger.

Mrs Ebele, who addressed the aggrieved passengers, said what had happened was a normal occurrence at the airport, contending that the resolve by the captain of the Aero plane to call for a more thorough screening of passengers was in order and in the interest of all.

NIGERIAN FUGITIVE IN $45 MILLION MEDICARE SCAM ARRESTED

Damn!! Not again. More negative news for Nigerians. When United Airlines Flight 143 hit Bush Intercontinental’s tarmac at 5:18 a.m., the Lagos overnighter came with a long-sought passenger: a handcuffed Nigerian fugitive who absconded from Houston days after his boss and co-workers were indicted in a $45 million Medicare scam.

The extradition of Godwin Chiedo Nzeocha marked a beguiling chapter in the case of a bogus Houston physical therapy clinic called City Nursing Services and accusations of Medicare fraud, money laundering and luxury living with American tax dollars.

Indictments of multiple characters in the scheme include allegations of using proceeds from the fraud to ship money and vehicles – including 80 18-wheelers – from Houston to Nigeria and stashing cash in Nigerian bank accounts. More than $831,000 sits idle in a Bank of America account in the United States.

Nzeocha’s unusual return to Houston in June punctuates the intricate connections between him and Nigerian associates who have been arrested, convicted, sentenced or sent to prison in a conspiracy to steal from the nation’s largest insurer for the elderly and the disabled.

All are accused of conspiring to pay recruiters to find patients, who also were paid to fill out bogus or blank claims forms submitted to Medicare for treatment never delivered.

After prodding from U.S. prosecutors, Nzeocha was arrested by Nigerian police at the home he shared with his parents in Lagos, having traced him through the address he used when he opened the Nigerian accounts. His attorney, Edmond O’Suji says there’s no proof, despite his name on the account, that they belong to his client.

“He said they’re (accounts) not his,” the defense attorney said.

Pamela Ise, another player who supposedly helped orchestrate phony billing claims, also is a fugitive and believed to be in Nigeria.

Mr. Sam Adebowale, a resident of the area, said that the water destroyed their property because their living rooms were submerged by the flood.

The flooding of the area, which they said started since seven years ago, got worse recently with the diversion of a drainage channel to the area by the Chinese Construction Company, CCECC, during the construction of the LASU-Iba Road. They claimed that they had sent series of letters to the authorities over their plight to no avail.
The neighbouring communities in Ogun State were also affected. Some of  the residents had their properties swept away.

Bello, explained that the officers are readily available to provide relief and solutions to all flooding challenges in each Local Government area of the state.
Lagos urges motorists to be cautious
The Lagos State Government has also appealed to all road users especially motorists to observe and obey road traffic signs and other traffic rules and regulations in the state.

He urged them to ensure that their windscreen wipers were in proper working order and that their tyres were also in good condition before embarking on any journey.
Opeifa reaffirmed the commitment of the state government to safety of lives and property and  implored all drivers to avail themselves the opportunity of attending any of the five driving institutes established by the government for re-certification and also to enhance professionalism.
The commissioner noted that officials of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would be on hand to assist motorists, while the personnel of Vehicle Inspection office (VIO) had been directed to intensify efforts and ensure non road worthy vehicles were not on the roads.

HOW DO YOU KNOW THE PLANE YOU ARE BOARDING IS SAFE?

Read this before you get on that flight. There’s a lot that you do not know about the airline your’re flying.

(CNN) – Beyond a vague familiarity with the world’s major airlines, most travelers know little about the hundreds of carriers transporting passengers across the globe. Sunday’s deadly air crash in Nigeria raises questions about the safety of international airlines. So how do passengers find safety information?

There are several things travelers should look for to gauge an airline’s safety, according to Bill Voss, CEO of the Flight Safety Foundation, an international nonprofit organization.

In short, you’re looking for a Category 1 ranking from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and registration with theInternational Air Transport Association, an international trade group. Membership with a major airline alliance helps, and you likely want to avoid airlines banned by the European Union.

The Federal Aviation Administration looks at international aviation regulators. The FAA program assesses the safety standards of the civil aviation authorities of countries with airlines operating in the United States.

“We look at the ability of the aviation authority in the country to administer its aviation community in accordance with international regulations. We don’t look at individual airlines,” said FAA spokesman Les Dorr.

Countries with aviation authorities that meet standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization receive a Category 1 ranking. Those that don’t receive a Category 2 designation.

Nigeria, the site of the crash that killed more than 160 people, has a Category 1 ranking.

Twenty-five nations, nearly a quarter of those assessed, hold a Category 2 ranking, including the Philippines, Bangladesh, Barbados, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, Indonesia and Israel.

The International Civil Aviation Organization, the U.N. agency that defines international standards, also focuses oversight on regulators rather than airlines. The agency has conducted mandatory safety audits of the civil aviation authorities of member countries since 1999. Most countries publish the audits, but it’s not mandatory, “and the ones that you really want to see are the ones that don’t publish,” Voss said.

Despite occasional catastrophic crashes, airline accident rates have seen “massive improvements” in the last few decades, he said.

The global accident rate for commercial air service fluctuated between 3.9 and 4.6 accidents per million departures between 2005 and 2010, according to International Civil Aviation Organization. The agency’s 2011 figures have not been released. In 2010, the global rate was four accidents per million departures.

Africa had the highest regional accident rate in 2010 of 16.8, four times the global average, but Africa accounts for the lowest percentage of global traffic volume. North America’s accident rate, 3.3 per million departures, was below the world average in 2010. The region had the highest number of accidents — 35 — but no fatalities. Europe also had an accident rate of 3.3 per million departures with 24 accidents, two of which included fatalities.

The trade group International Air Transport Association does its own safety audits on air carriers. The organization’s registry is searchable by airline. All of the association’s more than 240 member airlines must meet audit standards to maintain membership.

“(Airlines) who are IATA member carriers actually have a far better safety rate than the industry standard,” Voss said.

Dana Air, the Nigerian carrier involved in Sunday’s crash, does not appear on the registry. Voss said the carrier may have chosen not to be audited or may not have passed.

The cause of Sunday’s accident in Nigeria is still unknown.

The European Union’s “black list” provides another safety benchmark.

The EU takes a more aggressive approach to screening individual carriers and has banned more than 280 airlines from 25 nations from operating within the EU since 2006. African, Indonesian and Philippine airlines figure prominently on the EU’s banned list, as do carriers in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The EU also has a list of carriers subject to operational restrictions. No Nigerian airlines appear on either list.

Membership in a major alliance, including Star Alliance, SkyTeamand oneworld, can also be considered a reassurance to nervous travelers, Voss said. Member airlines tend to monitor each other, reinforcing high safety standards.

There are no guarantees, but air travel is still much safer than other means of transportation.

“Particularly in the developing world, you have to look at how extraordinarily safe aviation is. Even though an airline might appear a little risky by your Western standards, it could easily be 1,000 times safer than taking the same trip on the road,” Voss said.

LAGOS PLANE CRASH WAS NO ACCIDENT! HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE WE WAKE UP?

I sat on my couch yesterday, glued to the Television, listening and watching all the images as they scrolled across the screen about the plane crash in Lagos, Nigeria. I was desperate to find out details of what happened. I wanted to find out what went wrong. For now, the death toll has been capped at 163 people. 153 on the plane and 10 on the ground. We all know that the body count is bound to rise as the days go by. So sad.

This morning, images of the pasengers and their families were posted on blogs and on facebook. Greedy and hungry bloggers and journalists posted the flight’s manifest before family members were notified. That is terrible, but that is not what this blog is about. As I looked at the pictures the passengers and family members, a feeling of intense sadness came over me. Many families are ravaged by the pain of the loss of their loved ones. I’m reminded of the pain of my loss. I’m reminded of the finality of death. They are never coming back. Then I get angry.

I put on headphones, turn on my Ipod and start running. As I begin to run, the anger grows and I run faster. I’m angry because all those people didn’t have to die yesterday. We all have a date with death, but it didn’t have to be yesterday. Their deaths could’ve been prevented. That Dana Air plane was not fit to leave the ground. When I was in Nigeria, I flew on two domestic flights from Lagos to Enugu. I flew on Arik Air and I flew on Dana Air. As I sat on those planes, I knew that both of them belonged in the jukyard. The planes looked like rejects from the rest of the world. Planes that would never fly in the UK or in America were purchased by money hungry businessmen and dumped on Nigeria and Nigerians. If you can’t afford to fly private, you have no choice but to fly on these death traps.

They don’t care about us. Everything on these planes are held together with duct tape. The tray tables do not open because they are duct taped to prevent them from falling out. The upholstery is ripped and the foam exposed. The planes are so old are not properly serviced, so we don’t even have a chance of survival. Airline regulators are supposed to inspect and maintain safety standards but either through incompetence or sheer corruption, they ignore their jobs. Pilots and flight attendants work on these planes, knowing that the planes are unfit and safety checks were not passed.

It could have been my brother, my mother, my father, my aunt, on that Dana Air flight yesterday. How many Nigerians have to die before we demand better? Tragedy after tragedy continues to happen in Nigeria and yet we do nothing. We have no other home. Even though some of us live in the UK and in America, these places are not home. How many Nigerians have to die before we demand a better chance to live? When are we going to say enough is enough? Today, tomorrow or never? Are we going to continue to just sit there and take it? When are we going to say “a resounding no” to evil and begin to build a real and better society?

To all the people that lost their lives on Dana Air flight yesterday in Lagos, Nigeria, may your souls rest in peace. To their families, may God give you the strength and fortitude to bear the loss.

UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS (UNILAG) RENAMED MOSHOOD ABIOLA UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS – STUDENTS RIOT

I remember losing several months of studies while in University in Nigeria due to riots and it seems like a big one is brewing in The University of Lagos (UNILAG) this morning. There is news this morning that the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has been named after the winner of the 1993 Presidential election winner, Moshood Abiola, as part of the celebration of “Democracy Day”. President Goodluck Jonathan made this statement as part of his “Democracy Day” speech. This news does not seem to have gone down well with the students and staff of the institution. The news which took most of the university community by surprise has been condemned by the students and staff.

Most of the students have already mobilized themselves and a protest is already on within the campus and if care is not taken may snowball into the adjourning streets of Akoka especially Community road and st Finbarrs College road.

When our corresspondent visited the university this morning, students were being mobilized from their domitories by the student union government in what may turn out to be a huge riot.

SEE YA LATER ALLIGATOR(S)

Ohhhh yes!!! Just like everything else, the fun in the sun must coome to an end. I’m leaving the land of crocodiles and alligators this morning. As you can see, I took the picture to the left in the shower, a few minutes ago. Hee hee!!!

After a long three weeks of ripping and running in Nigeria and then in London, I needed to relax and enjoy myself. I did that. This weekend I was part of a surprise birthday, a surprise engagement, with a little working out mixed in. I’m running out to the airport to jump on the plane, heading back to NYC.

I hope you guys continue to enjoy your weekend. I, for sure will continue to enjoy mine when I get to NYC.

THREE DAYS, THREE CITIES

I’m writing today’s blog post from the balcony of my hotel room in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The pictures in this blog were taken a few minutes ago. Yes, that’s the balcony of my hotel room. I was playing around with the self timer on my phone. I didn’t even know that my phone had this capability. I also took a picture to show the view from my room. Go Android!!! My eyes in these pictures show the lack of sleep. It’s beutiful out here. The sun shine here is a lot like it is in Nigeria. It shines through unobstructed as opposed to how it is in NYC where the massive buildings block out the sun. It’s cooler than Nigeria right now, but in the summer, it gets hotter in Fort Lauderdale than it does in Nigeria. The part of Fort Lauderdale that I’m in is really beautiful. Many people come here to retire because of the mild weather and it’s inexpensive.

I was extremely exhausted from all my travelling over the past few days. By this morning, I had woken up in three cities in three days; London, New York City and now Fort Lauderdale.  I came into town because Chin, a very good friend of mine, wanted to surprise his girlfriend, Lauren, whose birthday it is today. Even though I knew I would be tired, I wanted to be there for my friend. I also wanted to see his girlfriend’s face when we did the surprise. I love to experience human emotion.  In order not to ruin the surprise,  I couldn’t post exactly where I was traveling to, in my morning post yesterday. Everybody receives social media updates to the cell phones, so I if had posted where I was going, she would’ve found out and it would have ruined the surprise.

It was so funny to see her face. When they arrived at the hotel, Chin told Lauren that he was angry because they had to pick up their travel guide and drive thirty minutes to attend a mandatory welcome event. He then pulled up to the front of the hotel to pick up the “travel agent” and then I walked out. For a few seconds she just looked at me like she didn’t know who I was. It was so funny because later on she told me that at that moment, she was thinking, “the travel agent looks a lot like Ngo” and then Kindra came out from behind me and then she got it. Lauren looked so confused and then we all started cracking up. I love surprises!!

Today I’m going to write more than one post. I have to run out and search the resort for a gym. Fort Lauderdale has a lot of older people, so they do not readily advertise gyms. They advertise tennis, golf and ether types of activities for old people. I will write again after I find a gym and workout. I have already found the pool, so I will hang at the pool after my workout.

Stay tuned for more.

NEAR TRAGEDY IN FRONT OF MY EYES IN LAGOS

Today started unlike many others on our second visit to Nigeria. We didn’t have to wake up extremely early in order to run to several meetings. We started slowly. We took care of our laundry and then went out to get gasoline. We planned to go to the gym after filling up the tank. We were at a an intersection, waiting for cars to pass, so that we could get on the road to the gym, when I looked up and saw man being run over by the rear four wheels of a 16-wheeler.

It happened so fast that I didn’t think that it was real. I said to Maduka “oh shit, that dude just got run over by that truck”. Maduka didn’t see it and looked confused. We stopped the car and jumped out. The guy was on the ground, writhing in pain. A couple people had gathered. The driver of the 16 wheeler tried to run away but was caught. My instinct was to dial 911, but reality kicked in and I realized where I was. We waved down a taxi and begged him to take the man to the hospital. The driver reluctantly agreed. I know that we should not have moved him, but I knew that the truck only ran over his hips and legs, so the chance of head and spinal trauma were minimal.

We gently picked him up and placed him in the back seat of the taxi. I ran over and grabbed some money from Maduka and gave it to the taxi driver. The money could pay for the man’s medical bill or at least pay the driver.

It was traumatizing. My body was shaking for a little while. We got ourselves together and headed to the gym. All the while, I was hoping that the man would survive. I hope that our fast action saved his life.

FOR NAIJA, MAKE UNA DEY GIVE O!!

No need to adjust eyes. The title above is not a typo or an error in grammar. The above title boys and girls, is the Nigerian Pidgin language. “For Naija, make una dey give o”, means “In Nigeria, you must continue to give”. I say this because many people come to Nigeria from the United States or Europe and forget where they are. When I first got to Nigeria, people would salute me or as it is called here in Nigeria, hail me, everywhere I would go. Initially, I thought that my PR company had done such an amazing job that due to their hard work, all of these people knew me. Every where I went, it was a salute and “Good Morning sir”, “Good afternoon sir”, “My chief” and so on. Boy was I wrong!!!

They were hailing me strictly because they wanted me to give them money. Many Nigerians after being abroad for a long time, come home and forget where they are. Life is difficult for a lot of people in Nigeria. We must never forget that. The people actually need this money. And how much money are we talking about? Let me give you a couple of examples. The security guards at the hotel or at the entrance of the gym, are all grossly under paid. They work hard in the hot sun and have a wife and probably kids at home. If you were to give them 200 Naira, that is less than $1.50!!  They will be so grateful to you and your life will run so much more smoothly. Every tiny little bit helps. Their wife and kids will be grateful for it and it costs you nothing.  They will continue to give you good energy by hailing you and you give a couple of dollars. Everybody is happy.

Some people come over and feel that they have to change the system. They refuse to give and then they wonder why it takes them so long to receive basic services. The wheels must always be greased. We must continue to take care of each other because the government will not. So, until then , For Naija, make una dey give 0!!!!

GOD HELP NIGERIA

I got back to Lagos yesterday evening from Enugu and what a relief that was. I had a great time in Enugu. I had all kinds of mixed feelings while I was there. It had been 19 years since I left home.  Too many years!! I went to all the places of my youth. I felt happiness. I felt sadness. I remembered young love. I remembered young heartbreak. I remembered my youth.

I wanted to stay longer in Enugu, but I had to get back to Lagos to continue shooting scenes for my documentary, “Three Rounds”. We quickly packed our things and headed to the airport. When I got to the airport, I found out that there was no power in the entire airport. Due to the fact that the power was out, the security scanning machine was down. Yes, I said “MACHINE”, as in only one!! I couldn’t believe it. The line to go through security quickly built up and tempers were flaring.

In order to move the line along, security officials would quickly glance at bags without searching them thoroughly. They didn’t even use the chemical detecting swabs to check for explosives. I couldn’t believe it. Any psychopath could have concealed a gun, or a knife or a bomb in their bag(s) and checked them onto the flight. Scarier even, they could have carried it onto the plane where they could have hijacked the plane.

No one knows when an air tragedy will happen. It does seem as though  all the opportunities are in place for this to happen in Nigeria, but God continues to save the people in Nigeria. The problem could begin with the security or lack there of and move on the fact that planes flown in Nigeria would not be allowed to fly in The United States of Europe. It will be a tragedy of catastrophic proportions because systems are not in place to handle an unfortunate event such as that. God help Nigeria

I had this on my mind or the entire flight. Every bump or shake in the air made me think about the plane going down. I thought to myself, “Am I ready to die? Have I done all I was put on earth to do?”. A part of me was ready. A part of me was ready to die. None of us is going to live forever and everyday could be our last. We have to accept that and live everyday as though it is our last. God Help Nigeria!

10 WEDDINGS AND ONE LAST CRY FOR HELP

I attended a wedding yesterday in Enugu in which my brother,Maduka, was the best man. I am friends with the groom’s family as well. The wedding itself was really cute and quite interesting at the same time. The church on the other hand was like being in sauna. The only thing missing was my towel and the smell of eucalyptus. The fans were doing a good job of cooling the church, but then the power went out. Damn you NEPA!!!! I was sweating my ass off. I had a traditional outfit on and was baking in it.

There were 10 couples getting married at the same time. The couples were lined up shoulder to shoulder on the alter and the priest went down the line, and had the couples say their vows. This is where the fun began for me. I borrowed a pen from a lady in the pew behind me and started writing this blog.

The grooms spoke in such low tones. Their voices shook as they said the vows that every adult has heard a thousand times – “I Mister X take you (insert girl’s name here), to be my lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, from this day forward, to love and to cherish, until DEATH DO US PART(scary music plays here)!!!!

The men’s lives flash before their eyes. The extremely happily and not-so-blushing bride on the other hand, spoke loudly and with supreme confidence. They could have shouted it from the mountains. It was as if they were saying  ”I GOTCHO ASS NOW!!! The men wept on the inside. And then with a sly smile, the best man stepped forward to present the cutest, tiniest, little handcuffs to the couple. The grooms cringed and the brides smiled even wider, I REALLY GOTCHO ASS NOW!!!!

The grooms’ knees buckled and the brides’ chests rose. It’s too late to make a run for it. Then the grooms let out one massive, internal cry for help. it’s all over for me…..

NGO HITS MUSHIN, LAGOS, TO SHED LIGHT ON THE KIDS

Yesterday was one of those days that I liken to jumping out of a plane at 20,000 feet and believing that your parachute will open. It started out with my brother, Maduka and I driving around Victoria Island, Lagos, searching for a gym to get a workout in. Yesterday was good friday and many businesses in Lagos were closed. It took nearly an hour for us to find an open gym. After driving around endlessly and wasting a ton of gas, we finally found a gym in Lekki Beach. We paid our day fee and went to work.

Due to the fact that it took so long to find a gym, we ran late to get to our location to shoot the kids in Mushin, Lagos. Mushin is one of the toughest ghettos in Lagos and many people are terrified to go there. Many people’s lives flash before their eyes as they drive past Mushin, praying that their car doesn’t break down. This is where many of the fighters that have now become my  friends, live and train. I wanted to hang out with them, talk to them and find out what they needed done in order to become the best that they can be. I want to shoot these conversations and share them with the world.

When we got to Mushin, the whole neighborhood was waiting for us. It felt like a scene out of a movie. The guys who ordinarily would have given us a hard time were fans of ours. We were going to put their area on the map. We had our “hood pass”. These guys would fight to keep us safe because if anything were to happen to us, their stories would not be heard. There was a mob everywhere we went. Everybody waved and chanted “champ” to me as we walked through the sometimes broken down buildings. I felt at home here.

Even though we were running late, instead of being stressed, somehow I knew that it would all work out. It truly did. We got great footage!! As a matter of fact, great doesn’t even begin to describe the footage we got. We were given unprecedented access to the boxers’ lives and families. They spoke candidly and freely about their plight. They trusted me completely. It was amazing. No one has ever shot footage like this here. I was so happy.

It was a huge day also because I was officially the director. I have been directing the shoot for the entire process of shooting the “Three Rounds” documentary, but yesterday, I chose the shots, set up the shots, and I sometimes worked the camera.  It was so cool!! I never thought that I could do it, but just like most things in my life, I learn by the sink-or-swim rule. I continue to grow. We must continue to grow people.

IT WILL ALWAYS COME BACK TO YOU

Life always comes full circle, if we trust in it and allow it to happen. Most of the time, we get anxious because we don’t believe that it will work out for us. As long as we remember that what’s meant for us is already waiting for us, our lives will be that much easier. Last night, I was a judge in the Martini Male Model Search in Lagos. I’ve never judged a model search before and had a blast with my co-judges. The guys in the competition were actually quite good. I think that some of them have a chance of working internationally. They were all so young and thin, which is good thing for modeling. The norm for models is to be able to fit a 40R jacket. I’m not the norm. I’m what would be called a specialty model because depending on the cut, I usually can’t fit a 40R jacket. I am also a bit taller than most models.

There was so much press there. Lagos is really making power moves when it comes to events and fashion. Don’t sleep on Nigeria people!!! My PR team and I were running around trying to get press confirmations from certain outlets without much luck. It all came back to us though because all the press were at the model search last night. That goes to show that IT WILL ALWAYS COME BACK TO YOU..

STAND IN THE PATH OF TRAFFIC

Location or more specifically, positioning is truly everything. In order to meet the right contacts in the field that you would like to conquer, it is imperative to network at the places where the key players in that particular field hang out. When my brother told me how much the hotel he booked would cost, I nearly lost it. Shortly after I got to the hotel, I quickly realized why it was so important to stay at the hotel he selected. Not only was it the most beautiful hotel in Lago, every body hangs out in the lounge of my hotel. The restaurant is always packed with major players in the Nigerian entertainment and media industries. The number of contacts that we have made here are priceless. Sometimes, when I just come down to grab a drink or go to the gym, I meet someone that turns out to be the director of this major media outlet or the Managing Director of that Television or cable network. You have to be in it to win it.

I was recently told the story of an insurance salesman who set up spies in all service industries. He even had spies in the airline business. His look outs would inform him of when a wealthy person would be flying on a particular airline to London in addition to what seat number they would be in. The salesman would then purchase a seat on the same flight next to them. He would get on the plane and then chat them up. Many times on international flights, strangers bond over fear of death especially when there is a bit of turbulence. The saleman would bond with the wealthy individual and then sell them insurance. When the plane lands, the salesman would have closed the deal. He then turns right back around, gets on the next flight and returns home. Mission accomplished!!

You have to stand in the path of traffic in order to catch fish!! That is the only way to make things happen for yourself.

A STRANGER IN NEW YORK

Today started out extremely early. I woke up today so happy that I’m home. Every where I go, I get so much love. All the media outlets have opened their doors to me. It got me thinking about my life and business in the United States. This would never happen in the States. The US is where I call home and yet I’m treated like A STRANGER IN NEW YORK. Since I’ve been in Lagos, the norm for me has been doing press all day, being engaged in meetings until late at night and then waking quite early in the morning. Today, I had to be at the National Television Authority (NTA) in Lagos at 7am. I had to hustle to make sure I got there on time in order to meet and chat with the host  before the show began. We had a bit of a problem getting the crew together because they all live on the mainland in Lagos and ran a bit late. We did make it though! I’m now waiting to do another interview on NTA for a show called Contact at 3pm.

I have to say that being back home has confirmed to me that I’m not insane. I have always been an out of the box thinker. While in the US, I always believed that an actor/model with the body of work that I do, should be able to do a presentation to Advertising agencies, much like a production company would. The advertising agencies produce TV commercials and photo shoots for brands across the world. The idea that I had come with, was to present my work to the agencies, thereby doing most of the homework for them. I produced a marketing reel which consisted of images and videos of my work that would be shown in a conference room style setting. All they have to do is take a look at the work that I’ve done and then match me up with brands they represent. Sounds like a no brainer right? WRONG!!!!! They didn’t see it that way. They would rather do things the same old way and go through modeling or talent agencies.

Nigerian agencies on the other hand agree with me. The biggest Advertising Agency in West Africa, Insight Grey Communications agreed with my idea. They set up a meeting with my team and myself to present the Ngo Brand to their advertising team. Insight Grey Communications represent brands such as Samsung, Pepsi, Lucozade, MTN (the largest telecommunications network in Africa), Cadbury Brands etc. They set up a meeting with my team in their large conference room and every single account manager was in the room. We then played my marketing DVD, which was follwed by a short speech by me and then we did a Q & A session afterwards.  THEY TOTALLY GOT IT!!! They were so happy that I came in because it made their work easier. They already know me, so when a brand match occurs, they just have to lock it down. This is one less step for them to have to take. FORWARD THINKING PEOPLE!!

As I always say, you must think outside the box in order to survive in this business. There is not other way!!
