SERGIO MARTINEZ BEATS CHAVEZ AFTER ESCAPING A WILD 12TH ROUND

After a year of trying to get Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to fight him, Sergio Martinez finally got his wish. And he certainly took advantage of the opportunity.

Martinez justified his reputation as one of the top-three pound-for-pound fighters in the world in the eyes of many, as he defeated Chavez and claimed the WBC middleweight belt Saturday night.

Martinez dominated the early and middle parts of the fight, but that didn’t stop both fighters from a furious finish. Chavez started gaining momentum in the 11th round, and he even scored a knockdown in the 12th.

However, Martinez was saved by the bell. He won via unanimous decision, winning the coveted middleweight belt.

It was an exciting fight, and the finish was one of the best in recent memory. Both fighters put forth a tremendous effort, but Chavez couldn’t get the knockout he needed at the end.

Martinez had everything to lose in this fight. Had he not been able to secure the middleweight title, it’s possible the 37-year-old would have slowly faded into boxing irrelevance as the sport looked toward younger contenders to challenge Chavez.

It’s what makes this win so impressive. He wasn’t just fighting Chavez; he was fighting off the inevitability of eventually sacrificing his place among boxing’s elite as well. To a certain extent, his reputation was on the line.

For Chavez, this is certainly a setback, but likely just a temporary one. He’s still a big draw. He’s still considered one of the elite middleweights around. He’ll be back.

Still, you can’t help but wonder if this will only embolden those fans that whisper that Chavez is overrated, that he is only such a huge draw because he is the son of the greatest Mexican fighter of all time.

On this night, the Chavez name couldn’t save him. And for one more fight, Martinez quieted the talk that he was slowing down and his time among the elite was drawing to a close.

Martinez has the belt he probably deserved to hold much sooner. He won’t go gently into the night, at least not yet.

CUBA GOODING JR.: PUSHES BARTENDER, ASSAULT CHARGES AGAINST HIM DROPPED

A New Orleans bartender who accused Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. of pushing her has dropped all charges against him, bar management said Wednesday.

The unnamed female bartender told police Gooding stopped by the Old Absinthe House in the French Quarter in the early hours of Tuesday with a group of people. She said Gooding soon became angry with other patrons who recognized him and wanted to take pictures with him.

The bartender told police she asked Gooding to calm down, at which point he allegedly pushed her away. Another employee called 911 and told Gooding to leave, and as he left, he pushed the bartender again, police said.

Police said Gooding was presumed to be intoxicated, and a misdemeanor battery warrant was issued for his arrest.

Gooding and his attorney met with police Wednesday and was given a court summons, police said, but later in the day the bar’s management said the bartender chose to drop all charges.

“While we will continue to investigate this matter internally, we are hopeful that this will put an end to the matter and allow everyone to get back to enjoying all that our great city has to offer!” a statement from the management read.

Gooding is starring in the upcoming movie “The Butler,” filming in New Orleans. He won an Academy Award in 1997 for best supporting actor in the film “Jerry Maguire” and starred in this year’s “Red Tails,” about the Tuskegee Airmen.

WALTER SZULC Jr: VIDEO OF KAYAKER FOLLOWED BY GREAT WHITE SHARK ON CAPE COD BEACH!!

A first-time kayaker had a close encounter with a great white shark off the coast of Massachusetts over the weekend.

Sunbathers first spotted the shark following two kayakers on Saturday afternoon off Nauset Beach, the Cape Cod Times reported, and yelled to the men offshore.

One of the kayakers saw the shark and quickly paddled in, while it took the other one, Walter Szulc Jr., of Manchester, N.H., a little while longer to notice the dorsal fin just feet away from him.

“There were hundreds of people on the beach, and they were all at the edge, yelling paddle paddle, paddle!” Dave Alexander told the NBC News affiliate in Boston, WHDH.com.

Szulc said when he looked behind him, the shark “was pretty much right there.”

“It was good-sized, it had a fin sticking out, so I just turned and paddled,” he told WHDH.com. It was the first time Szulc had kayaked.

Since June 30, three sharks have been seen plying the waters off Cape Cod for food, the Cape Cod Times reported. The large number of seals in the area is believed to be drawing the sharks.

Orleans Harbormaster Dawson Farber said he and his team went out in a boat to confirm the sighting – he noted the shark was an estimated 12 to 14 feet long — and they had all bathers get out of the water. The beach was also closed.

An increased number of great white sharks in are being reported in Cape Cod. NBC’s Anne Thompson reports.

“Everyone was very relaxed and the shark put on quite a show moving back and forth out in front of the beach, but it was done in a very orderly fashion,” Farber told ABC News.

Witness Debbie Sutton said Szulc “started booking it.”

“You could see the darkness of it,” she told WHDH.com. “It was longer than the kayak … it was crazy big.”

Not all beachgoers were scared by the great white. Some even got into the water at the beach later in the day.

“Everyone wanted to see it,” Karen O’Connell of Medfield told the Cape Cod Times. “There were people running toward it.”

The last shark attack on a human in the area was in 1936, when a man was killed swimming near Mattapoisett, the newspaper reported.

In central California on Saturday, a shark lifted up a man’s kayak, throwing him into the water. The man was rescued by a boater, but the shark bit the kayak, damaging it, according to NBCBayArea.com. In May, two kayakers escaped a great white in California, though the shark gouged one of the kayaks, leaving a 20-inch long and 22-inch wide hole, local media reported.

A kayaker was fishing off the waters of Capitola Beach, Calif., when his boat was overturned by what some witnesses say was a great white shark. KSBW’s Margot Dunphy reports.

In 2011, there were 75 unprovoked shark attacks on humans, with 35 percent of those happening in U.S. waters, according to the International Shark Attack File. That number was down from 81 in 2010.

The total number of unprovoked global shark attacks has grown since 1900, the group said, noting that did not necessarily mean there was an increase in the rate of attacks, but that people were spending more time in the water, increasing the chances for interactions between the two.

JAIL AFFECTING MAYWEATHER’S HEALTH? WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS?

FLOYB MAYWEATHER BY NGO OKAFOR

FLOYD MAYWEATHER BY NGO OKAFOR

There is a report out today, that Floyd Maweather’s lawyers are fighting to ease the manner in which he serves out his prison sentence. Lawyers for Floyd Mayweather Jr. say that he is getting out of shape in solitary confinement and may never fight again if he’s not released from the cramped Las Vegas jail cell.

My argument is that although I believe that if you do the crime, you have to do the time, but in this case, I have to agree with his lawyers. Floyd is a celebrity and cannot be put in general population for safety reasons. Therefore he can’t get to workout like the other guys can. His career depends on him staying in shape. This is how he feeds his children. His livelihood and that of his family is in jeopardy if he is not able to maintain his intense workout routine.

Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton had the same problem, but did not serve any jail time. They could not be placed in the general population area of the California jail due to their celebrity. In their case, they did not spend time in jail. Linsay should have been thrown in jail several times by now, for violating her probation. She even drank with an ankle bracelet on. Clearly, the threat of jail time has not detered Lindsay Lohan from inhaling insane amounts of cocaine or injesting ungodly amounts of alcohol. Why should Floyd Mayweather go to jail if they do not?

Why is there a double standard? Is it because he is a man? Is it because he’s black? I don’t know. Floyd Mayweather makes a hell of a lot more money than Lindsay Lohan and definitely contributes more to the community than Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton. For these reasons and more, Floyd Mayweather Jr. should get the same treatment or even better.

What are your thoughts on this issue?
