USA OLYMPIC TEAM UNIFORMS MADE IN CHINA: WHAT HAPPENED TO ‘MADE IN THE USA’

The U.S. Olympic Committee is defending sponsor Ralph Lauren’s uniforms for the opening ceremonies at the London Games after it was revealed that American athletes will be wearing clothing manufactured in China.

The controversy erupted this week after reports emerged that the clothing unveiled by the American design company sport “Made in China” labels, generating heated criticism from lawmakers and human rights activists.

“Unlike most Olympic teams around the world, the U.S. Olympic Team is privately funded and we’re grateful for the support of our sponsors,” USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky said in a statement released Thursday.

“We’re proud of our partnership with Ralph Lauren, an iconic American company, and excited to watch America’s finest athletes compete at the upcoming Games in London.”

Rep. Steve Israel, D-New York, said there was still enough time for the uniforms to be made in the United States.

“There are companies and people waiting to make those uniforms, and we can have the job done and the uniforms shipped in time for the Olympics,” he told CNN.

Shoppers pledge to ‘buy American’

A majority of clothing is produced overseas, but it is a myth that American manufacturers can’t do the job locally, he said.

“We’re not asking (Ralph Lauren) to do this simply out of American patriotism, although this is a matter of pride. We’re asking them to do it as a matter of economic strategy,” Israel said.

Dara Torres, a former American Olympic swimmer who won 12 medals in a span of 20 years, said the uniforms looked great but would be even better if they were produced domestically.

“Wearing the U.S. uniform, going out there to represent the United States, it would be nice if it was actually made in the United States,” she said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, told reporters Thursday that “the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves.”

“I think they should be embarrassed. I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again,” he said.

Kenya athletics brand has ambitions to take on Nike

“If they have to wear nothing but a singlet that says USA on it, painted by hand, then that’s what they should wear.”

Ralph Lauren and the USOC were bombarded on Facebook and Twitter by hundreds who demanded the fashion design company manufacture new uniforms in the United States.

Actress and human rights advocate Mia Farrow took to Twitter to call on the designer to explain its actions: “please will you tell us why the US Olympic uniforms are made in China? Why not made in the USA?”

Farrow, known for her advocacy on behalf on children, also called on the designer to heed Reid’s call. “Burn them & start all over. How bout it?” she tweeted.

At least one current Olympic athlete also raised questions about the uniforms.

“Our Ralph Lauren outfits for the Olympic opening ceremonies were made in China. So, um, thanks China,” tweeted distance runner Nick Symmonds, who represents the best hope for the United States to medal in the men’s 800-meters since the 1992 Games in Barcelona.

Sandusky, the USOC spokesman, also took to Twitter later in the day to defend the uniforms, describing the criticism as nonsense.

High-end designers create uniforms for masses

“All this talk about Olympic uniforms made in China is non sense. Polo RL is an American company that supports American athletes,” he tweeted.

Ralph Lauren did not respond to a CNN request for comment, though the designer — in a statement posted online — called it a “privilege to be the outfitter of Team USA for the 2012 Olympic Games.”

“The Olympic Games are the ultimate tradition of international competition, sportsmanship, and personal excellence,” the designer said on the company’s corporate website.

The USOC is no stranger to controversy over its sponsorships, with questions being raised over why it opted last year to extend BP’s sponsorship through the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, following the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010.

It was also questioned as early as the 2002 during the Winter Games in Salt Lake City about why American athletes donned berets made by Roots, a Canadian company.

Ralph Lauren has designed uniforms for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver and the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, and both times portions of the clothing were manufactured in China, according to previous CNN reports.

The revelations about the 2012 uniforms, first reported Wednesday night by ABC News, come at a critical time as the United States grapples with a struggling economy that has hit the American textile industry hard.

JUST MARRIED AND DIGGING OUT OF DEBT

These newlyweds are deeply in love — and deeply in debt. Now that they’ve tied the knot, they’re trying to get their finances in order so that they can start their lives together debt-free.

Thomas & Meredith Brown

Married: June 12, 2011

Debt at marriage: $40,000
Debt now: $20,000

Thomas and Meredith Brown, 26 and 24, were already in debt when they decided to get hitched last year, so they had to take out an $8,000 loan to afford the wedding.

Everything, including the tuxedo rental, the caterer, the decorations and the fabric for her wedding dress — which her mother-in-law made for her — was paid for with borrowed money.

Now, one year after their nuptials, they’ve managed to pay that loan off — thanks to the money they received from wedding guests. They also paid back a $15,000 car loan. But they are still left with $20,000 in student loans.

To whittle away at this remaining debt, the Browns have put together a budget — and they’ve cut back.

While they used to spend around $75 a night on dates — going to nice dinners, ballets, musicals and movies — they now look for free, or at least cheap, ways to have fun like going on picnics or volunteering.

“I think it’s more fun when we go on a date for next to nothing, because we both get really excited that we didn’t spend the $75 we would have otherwise,” said Meredith.

While the couple has had the occasional disagreement about how much money should be going toward debt versus the family emergency fund, they said that overall, dealing with their finances together has brought them closer together.

“I think it has absolutely strengthened our relationship,” said Meredith. “We know many couples who don’t discuss finances and we know couples who were very much in debt and are now having very serious problems, so talking about it and paying it back together makes me feel very secure and excited about what we will be able to do in the future because we are living more frugally now.”

GEORGE ZIMMERMAN BACK IN JAIL AFTER BOND WAS REVOKED AFTER LYING ABOUT FINANCES

Sanford, Florida (CNN) — George Zimmerman was booked into jail Sunday after surrendering to authorities before an afternoon deadline, the Seminole County sheriff said.

Zimmerman met two members of the sheriff’s office in a business parking lot about 1:25 p.m. Sunday and was taken into custody, Sheriff Donald Eslinger told reporters.

Zimmerman was required to return to central Florida and turn himself in after a judge revoked his bail Friday, saying Zimmerman misled the court about his finances.

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, is accused of shooting unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in a gated community in Sanford in February. Zimmerman argues he acted in self-defense.

Eslinger said Zimmerman, who will be housed in administrative confinement, was “quiet and cooperative.”

Video from the jail showed Zimmerman exiting a white minivan, wearing handcuffs, jeans and a white button-down shirt, escorted by authorities.

“While out on bond, Mr. Zimmerman has been living in a secure, undisclosed location as there are significant threats against his life,” his attorneys said Sunday on the official website for his defense.

Asked how his client spent the weekend, attorney Mark O’Mara told reporters, “travel.”

He said Zimmerman was worried about coming out of hiding, “but I think he also realizes the judge’s concerns.”

O’Mara said he will be filing a motion Monday asking Lester for a new bond hearing to revisit Zimmerman’s status and allow the defense to “explain why what happened seems to have happened.”

THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL

“I believe that love that is true and real creates a respit from death. All cowardice comes from not loving or not loving well, which is the same thing. And when the man who is brave and true looks death sqaurely in the face, like some Rhino hunters I know or Belmonte, who is  truly brave, it is because they love with sufficient passion to push death out of their minds until it returns as it does to all men. And then you must make make really good love again”

The quote above is from the film ‘Midnight in Paris’ by Woody Allen. I came home early yesterday evening because I injured my right hand while sparring yesterday. I sprained the knuckle on the middle finger of my right hand as I threw a punch. I felt it happen, but continued for a few more rounds and even did a few rounds of drills. The fact that it happened to my middle finger made me happy because it meant that I landed the punch correctly.  When I was finished and pulled my right glove off, my knuckle had swelled up to more than twice it’s normal size. This injury is very painful, but quite common for fighters. It’s hurts like hell to open my hand and typing this blog is extremely difficult, but I have to suck it up in order to remain consistent with my blog.

This leads me to the topic of my post today. My blog today is about consistency. Come what may, the key to success in any field is consistency. Due to the fact that my hand was injured yesterday, I decided to make it a movie night. I chose ‘Midnight in Paris’ by Woody Allen. I’m usually not an Owen Wilson fan, but he was perfect for this role. Watching him in this film made me feel as though I was watching a younger, better looking Woody Allen with all the characteristic neurosis to boot. Great casting! If there were a picture next to the definition of consistency in the dictionary, Woody Allen’s would be it. When you watch a Woody Allen film, you are guaranteed an amazing story, a great cast and beautiful shots in each and every scene. He can shoot a film in London, on a dark, dreary winter day, and make it look beautiful. I have seen several Allen films and I’m yet to be disappointed. THAT MY DEAR FRIENDS, IS CONSISTENCY. I had visited Paris a few years ago and was not a big fan, but the color Woody Allen created with ’Midnight in Paris’ was so beautiful that I wanted to go back Paris.

I work hard to maintain a similar level of consistency with everything I do, be it blogging, staying in shape as a male model and for life in general, and boxing. This is the only way to truly be the best. STAY CONSISTENT MY FRIENDS!!!
