HOTEL GYM AND HOME WORKOUT: THE JET SETTER GUIDE TO FITNESS

If you’re a businessman or woman, on the go or a frequent vacationer, there’s a good  chance that at some point you’re going to end up away from your gym and on the  hunt for a place to work out. While many assume that every hotel comes equipped  with a gym, this is often not the case. Even some pricey boutique hotels do not  include an exercise room, so it’s important to have a workout backup plan.

This is where hotel workouts come into play: you can use items found in your hotel room as props to help you work out and maintain your  physique while out of town. The key to an effective hotel workout is finding  creative ways to challenge the muscles, all while using your own body weight or  props. For the cardioportion of your hotel workout, options include  stepping up and down on a chair or bench, running stairs located in the hotel,  skipping (outside if you’re not on the bottom floor), or simply going for a  run. For strength training, you’re going to need to put a spin on  traditional exercises to create your hotel workout. Here are some  useful ways to get an effective hotel workout.

Props

To complete your hotel workout, you can use the following  props:

  • 2 2-liter bottles of water obtained at a nearby grocery or convenience  store
  • 2 chairs found in your room

The objective of your hotel  workout is to move through the following exercises as quickly as possible.

Body weight squats with wall squats

Start your hotel workout by holding  one of the water bottles directly out in front of you with your feet  shoulder-width apart. Begin to squat down, keeping your toes pointed  forward and going as low as possible. Complete a total of 30-50 reps, depending  on your fitness level. Then, stand with your back against a wall and  move down into the squat position so that your knees are at a 90-degree  angle. Hold this position for 20-30 seconds.

Push-up sequence

To add more difficulty to regular push-ups, place your  feet on top of the bed while keeping your hands on the floor. Your body should  be on a flat decline. From there, perform push-ups as usual.   Once you’re finished doing 15-20 reps, turn your body while lifting one hand off  the floor so that you are sideways with one arm fully supporting your body.  Maintain this position for 20 seconds. After you’re finished, repeat  the push-ups, only this time place your hands in a triangular position.   Repeat once more on the other side, holding the sideways position to complete  this sequence.

LIGHTNING STRIKES HOME AND KILLS TWO IN LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY

An elderly man and his granddaughter died after a bolt of lightning started a fire in a house in Louisville, Kentucky, on Thursday evening, officials said.

The lightning came from powerful storms that struck the area, causing auto accidents, flooding viaducts and stranding cars.

The 911 call from the people inside the house came in around 6:45 p.m., said Vince Luney, communications supervisor for EMA Metrosafe, a public safety agency. Amid a flurry of other emergency calls, firefighters were dispatched to the scene and arrived within minutes.

The elderly man was bedridden and his granddaughter was trying to get him out of the house, said Gregory Frederick, the Louisville fire chief.

It took “about 10 or 15 minutes to actually locate them because of the severity of the fire,” he said. “We had to knock some of the fire down to get firefighters in there to effect the rescue. The fire had a pretty good head start on us.”

Between them, the 30 firefighters on the scene pulled the two people out of the house.

“Those boys were brave — the flames were going, they were running straight to it, back up a bit, and run again,” Billy Ray Garrett, a resident of the neighborhood told CNN affiliate WAVE. “If anybody died in that house, it ain’t because of anything they could do, they were trying, they were fighting.”

The elderly man died of his injuries at the scene, according to Frederick, and the woman was declared dead at a Louisville hospital. Several family members were present at the time and were notified, he said.

Firefighters are investigating the blaze and are treating lightning as the preliminary cause.

“Lightning struck an 80-foot-tall tree, hit about 40 feet up, and it entered a phone wire that came in through the rear of the house,” Frederick said. Melted wire suggested the phone line had carried the lightning’s charge into the basement of the house, he added.

Fire crews reported smoke in the basement upon arrival.

“It was like having a blow torch coming out the side of the house,” Garrett said. “It was running all the way up the side of the other house, it was all coming through the bottom window, like a massive torch.”

The house is still standing, according to Frederick.

“It’s got pretty severe damage to the basement and the first floor,” he said. “It’s an older, probably 1940s-era house, so the fire traveled (through) sealed spaces and moved into other areas of the house.”

Severe thunderstorms that pushed through the area included winds that topped more than 60 mph, according to the National Weather Service. The storms knocked out power in thousands of homes across Kentucky.

The roof of Louisville’s Crowne Plaza Hotel was partially torn off, sending debris onto vehicles in the parking lot below, officials said. No injuries were reported to EMA Metrosafe.

“We probably made somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 other runs” to deal with problems caused by the storm, Frederick said. A multitude of those requests came within 20 to 30 minutes, he added.

In nearby Oldham County, a man on a boat on the Ohio River was struck by lightning, said Don Dahl, the North Oldham deputy assistant fire chief.

The young man was in speedboat with about four other people when the storms rolled in from the Indiana side of the river, Dahl said.

The man appeared to have taken a direct hit from lightning and was “hurting pretty bad,” according to Dahl.

The emergency services got the man onto land and into a waiting ambulance, which took him to a Louisville hospital, he said.

The man’s latest condition was not immediately available. He was taken to the hospital with “unknown injuries,” said Jason Smiser, Oldham County dispatcher.

HOME RAPID HIV TEST APPREOVED IN THE UNITED STATES

The first ever over-the-counter rapid HIV test has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Users of the OraQuick In-Home HIV Test swab their upper and lower gums with the included test pad device and place it into a vial of solution.  Much like a pregnancy test, one line shows up if the test is negative, two lines means a positive test. Test results take about 20 minutes.

A positive reading does not mean a definite human immunodeficiency virus, but that additional testing should be scheduled with a health professional.  However, the FDA also cautions that a negative test result “does not mean that an individual is definitely not infected with HIV, particularly when exposure may have been within the previous three months.”

The FDA approved another in-home test in 1996, however those samples needed to sent away to a lab for results.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about 1.2 million people in the United States are currently living with HIV, but about one in five don’t know they’re infected.

“Knowing your status is an important factor in the effort to prevent the spread of HIV,” said Dr. Karen Midthun, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. “The availability of a home-use HIV test kit provides another option for individuals to get tested so that they can seek medical care, if appropriate.”

In clinical trials the OraQuick performed at 99.98% for test specificity–the percentage of results that will be negative when HIV is not present. This means that one false positive would be expected out of every 5,000 test results in uninfected individuals. A version of this test has been used by trained technicians in clinical settings since 2004.

OraSure Technologies, the manufacturer of the OraQuick In-Home HIV Test will have a consumer support center that is available via phone and will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The center will provide users with information about HIV/AIDS, the proper method for administering the test and guidance on what to do once results have been obtained.

Douglas Michels, President and Chief Executive Officer of OraSure says the approval represents a major breakthrough in HIV testing. “For the first time ever, individuals will have access to an in-home oral test that will empower them to learn their HIV status in the comfort of their home and obtain referral to care if needed. This new in-home rapid test – the same test doctors have used for years – will help individuals at risk for HIV who otherwise may not test in a professional or clinical setting.”

Orasure expects the kit to be available in stores and online in early October. The professional version of the kit sells in clinics for $17.50 but Michels believes the home kit will cost a little more. He says the price will be set by retailers. More than 30,000 stores will carry the test when it launches, he adds.

DANGEROUS FOODS – DON’T EAT THESE AT HOME

This gorgeous weather triggers so many thoughts and emotions. It could make you daydream about weekend beach getaways, lolling around in a hammock, fresh produce – hey, isn’t rhubarb in season? A fresh pie sounds just delicious – and wouldn’t it be so much prettier if you included a few of those lovely leaves? Don’t do it, unless you’re planning on making this your last meal.
Rhubarb leaves are poisonous, raw or cooked (they contain a not-good-for-you substance – oxalic acid). The stalk isn’t toxic, although it’s crazy tart if it’s not cooked and somehow sweetened up. Here are a couple of other ingredients to avoid – or at least moderate your consumption of – this season.
Nutmeg Ever since the Cinnamon Challenge kicked off, I’ve taken the precaution of investigating all the spices in my cabinet. (Not that I’m planning to start my own Spice Challenge; it’s just so I’m prepared if things get crazy at a party.) Nutmeg contains myristicin, a substance that can cause hallucinations, convulsions, vomiting and, in more extreme cases, circulatory collapse. You’d have to eat a lot of nutmeg – at least one whole seed, and generally more – for anything bad to happen. Still, please avoid any kind of spice powder eating competitions.

Cherry Pits Also in the category of all-natural ingredients that aren’t good for you, particularly in large quantities: cherry pits. Eating them can produce cyanide poisoning; so can peach, plum and apricot pits. Before you swear off all the great summer fruits, note that the pits have to be chewed up to release the toxins – and you’d have to chew a lot of pits before you hit a dangerous level. Still, just spit the pits.

Or, if you’re enterprising, save them. According to Michigan Cherry Pit Recyclers, cherry pits burn hotter than wood pellets and leave almost no ash. Plus, it’s cheap fuel – at least if you’ve been eating a lot of cherries.

Sichuan Peppercorns Is it just me or are there a ton of Sichuan restaurants opening up around the country? (Special shout out here to the excellent new Mission Chinese Food in Manhattan.) Is there a downside to this? Only if you believe that a signature ingredient in the cooking—Sichuan peppercorns, which provoke a wonderfully tingly mouth-numbing sensation—may be toxic. A ban of the dried berries, which ended in 2005, was only because it was potentially harmful to citrus plants, not people.

Here’s what the terrific website Serious Eats had to say on the subject: “Like some other habit-forming items, Sichuan peppercorns are actually toxic when ingested in large quantities.” But Dr. Andrew Weil thinks otherwise: “Their toxicity appears to be minimal.”

Pine Nuts To me this has all the trappings of a horror story. Out of nowhere, my Food & Wine colleague Kristin Donnelly started experiencing everything she ate and drank as bitter and medicinal. Scary! Eventually, after extensive time spent Googling symptoms, Kristin determined her predicament was caused by pine nuts she’d had in a salad. The phenomenon now has a name: Pine Mouth (the fancier name is Pine Nut Mouth).

Kristin used nuts imported from China; however, USDA scientists tested the DNA of 45 sample pine nuts and couldn’t get a definitive source for Pine Mouth, which means I can’t offer you one either. I just hope it doesn’t stop you from making pesto this season.

KADUNA STUDENTS FORCED TO GO ON HOLIDAY BECAUSE OF ATTACKS

God help Nigeria!! How are our youth supposed to get a good education if they cannot be left to study in peace? This picture shows students of a Kaduna Secondary school forced to go holiday because of the Boko Haram attacks on institutions of higher learning in Kaduna.

This is terrible. What are these kids to do with themselves now? Their poor parents now have to come up with creative ways to occupy these kids’ time. As we all know, the idle mind is the devil’s workshop. I hope that all this crap ends soon. I hope that all this bloodshed ends soon.
