FOR POWER OUTPUT, TECHNIQUE WILL DESTROY SIZE ANY DAY!

While I was sweating my butt off in a spin class at Fly Wheel Sports in NYC on Saturday, I looked up at the screen and saw that a girl in the class was pushing her power output dangerously close to my max power output. I couldn’t allow that to happen because men have more muscle and are generally heavier and stronger than women, so men should produce more power….right??……WRONG!!!

I was chatting with a male trainer at Peak Performance and he believes that group fitness classes should utilize heart-rate monitors in order to make sure that participants in the classes are working hard. I told him that each bike at Flywheel has a digital display which measures the total power output acheived by each participant in the class. The digital meter pushes everyone in the class to work hard to improve their final power output number. The male trainer countered this point by saying that men and heavier people are supposed to generate more power.

I contemplated this conversation for a quite a while. I later attended the Peak Performance Trainers’ and family party at a Bowling alley in NYC,  where the trainer’s point was put to the test. At the Bowling party, I created a different kind of competition. Once I discovered that the speed of the bowling ball could be measured, it was on!!! The competition shifted from hitting pins, making strikes and spares, to who could throw the bowling ball the fastest. It was so much fun!!!

But, back to the point at hand. The trainer, with whom I had the power conversation, got in on the competition and so did the biggest trainer at the gym (Peak Performance NYC). The trainer in question weighed about 175 lbs and the biggest trainer weighed about 245lbs. At the end of the competition, the 175lb trainer was able to throw the bowling ball faster than the 245lb trainer. Even though there was an astounding 70lb difference between the two guys, the lighter trainer was able to generate more power becasue he had better technique.

I believe that technique will destroy size any day. What are thoughts on this conversation? Feel free to share your ideas and thoughts here or on Facebook.

JON JONES UFC LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION ARRESTED IN NYC

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones had two female passengers riding  with him when he struck a utility pole in the early hours of May 19 in upstate  New York, according to the accident report released by the Binghamton Police  Department on Wednesday.

Jones, 24, pled guilty on Tuesday to driving while intoxicated and will be  sentenced on June 19. His license has been suspended indefinitely.

Michelle L. Vojtisek and Cara Johnson, both 25, sustained cuts, bruises and  swelling from the collision and were transported to Wilson Hospital for  treatment, according to the report. Both air bags had been deployed during the  crash.

Johnson, who was in the front passenger seat, attended Union-Endicott High  with Jones, according to online records.

An uninjured Jones had “slurred speech and glassy bloodshot eyes,” smelled of  alcohol and was unsteady on his feet when asked to step out of his vehicle,  wrote the arresting officer.

The fighter “politely refused” multiple requests to take sobriety and  breathalyzer tests at the scene and after he was arrested and taken into  custody, said Binghamton Police Dept. Captain John Chapman. Toxicology tests  were not conducted, as there were no serious injuries, said Chapman.

The front of Jones’ 2012 black Bentley sustained heavy damage, said the  report.

“There were no skids marks at the scene,” wrote the arresting officer. “It  appeared as though Jones was attempting a turn north onto Helen [St.] and  miscalculated his turn.”

From Sports Illustrated

Jones, who lives in Ithaca with his fiancée, Jessie Moses, and their two  young daughters, Leah and Carmen, was also cited seven months earlier in  Albuquerque, N.M. — where he trains for fights — for driving with a suspended  license. That charge was dismissed in March for failure to prosecute. Jones’s  New York license was active at the time of his May arrest.

Jones was also involved in documented multi-vehicle accidents in January 2011  in New Mexico and in New York in December 2008 and January 2009. Jones was not  found at fault for any of the accidents, but was cited for “unsafe passing” in  the January 2009 collision with his fiancée and newborn daughter in the car with  him. None of the accidents involved alcohol consumption, according to the  reports.

Jones, the youngest champion in UFC history and one of its highest-paid  athletes, is scheduled to defend his title for the fourth time against former  UFC and Pride champion Dan Henderson at UFC 151 on Sept. 1 in Las Vegas.

MTV WANTS YOU TO LOSE YOUR VIRGINITY IN NEW REALITY SHOW

I thought that this was a joke or prank when I first saw this, but it is NOT!! This is crazy! Do you think MTV has gone too far? Read on:

DO YOU WANT TO TAKE THINGS TO THE NEXT LEVEL? LIKE, ARE YOU READY TO HAND OVER YOUR V CARD? OR DO YOU HAVE A FRIEND WHO IS READY TO LOSE IT?

Young adulthood is a time for exploration. New relationships, fresh experiences and sexual firsts…

Now MTV is looking to frankly capture that journey in a new series called My First…We’re looking for adults who are ready to go all the way. Let MTV come along on your journey… as you try to lose your virginity! (Note: We will be filming whether or not you accomplish this goal… but NOT the act itself. Duh.)

If you are 18 years or older and are willing to candidly allow MTV to accompany you on the journey toward “losing it,” please send us an email.

MTV can and undoubtedly will hide behind the fact that 18 year-olds are legal adults, but you can prey on adults just as easily as you can prey on children, especially young adults conditioned by pop culture outlets like MTV to believe celebrity and narcissism are virtues.

And the bait here is celebrity. Debase yourselves for our cameras and we’ll make you a star! This isn’t about love or finding love or even losing your innocence to someone you love. This is about the lie that…

Young adulthood is a time for exploration. New relationships, fresh experiences and sexual firsts…

I seem to remember when we were the kind of culture that protected young people from the indignities of loveless sex and did everything in our power to educate about the financial, emotional, and medical pitfalls of leading with your sexuality over your heart.

What MTV is doing might be legal but it’s still a sleazy exploitation of some of our most vulnerable citizens. And the dangling of celebrity and a camera from a swanky studio lot is no different than dangling candy and a camera from your open raincoat.

If you want to debase yourselves, it’s a free country. To entice others, however, is an act of evil.

Since this posting, MTV has pulled the plug on the Virginity show.
