‘GEORGE JEFFERSON’, SHERMAN HELMSLEY DIES AT 74

Sherman Hemsley, who played the brash George Jefferson on “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons,” died Tuesday at 74, his booking agent said.

Hemsley played Jefferson, a wisecracking owner of a dry cleaning business, on “All In the Family” from 1973 until 1975, when the spinoff “The Jeffersons” began an 11-season run on CBS.

Police in El Paso, Texas, where Hemsley lived, said there was no evidence of foul play. The cause of death will be determined through an autopsy, according to a news release.

For the first few years on “All in the Family,” George Jefferson was not seen, only referred to by his wife, Louise, played by the late Isabel Sanford.

He told Archive of American Television in 2003 that he was told by the show’s producers that Jefferson should be “pompous and feisty.”

Jefferson was every bit as big a bigot as his neighbor, Archie Bunker, played by Carroll O’Connor. Jefferson often referred to white people as “honkies.”

He was also mean and condescending to his neighbors, his son Lionel and, when he moved to a ritzy apartment on Manhattan’s East Side, to his maid. But his character was still wildly popular with TV audiences.

“By me loving Louise and Archie loving (his wife) Edith, you got away with being goofy and stupid,” he said in 2003. “Because people said at least he loved something.”

It made Jefferson human, he said.

One of his former co-stars said she was shocked to hear he had died.

“I thought Sherman was doing very well,” said Marla Gibbs, who played feisty maid Florence Johnston on the “The Jeffersons.” “I am saddened to hear that Sherman has made his transition. We were trying to come up with a new show that we could participate in, but of course, that cannot happen now.

“Sherman was one of the most generous co-stars I have ever worked with. He happily set me up so that I could slam him, and I did the same for him. I shall miss him deeply.”

Hemsley said he drew on his experiences as a young man to develop Jefferson’s celebrated strut, which he did during filming as a joke.

“The way we walked in South Philly, you think you bad,” he said. “You gotta be important.

“We had done about seven or eight takes (on the ‘Jeffersons’ set) … and then we started clowning around,” he said of the walk. “That’s the one they kept.”

Hemsley also played Deacon Ernest Frye in the sitcom “Amen.”

“With the passing of Sherman Hemsley, the world loses one of its most unique comedic talents, and a lovely man,” Norman Lear, the creator of “All in the Family,” said in a statement.

In 2001, Lear told Larry King that he discovered Hemsley doing the Broadway play “Purlie.”

He remembered him “singing and dancing, and (Hemsley) was one of the most unique actors on the stage.”

In 1990, he released an album, “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head,” and two years later another, entitled “Dance.”

“I had the pleasure of working with him on ‘House of Payne,’ ” said producer and director Tyler Perry. “He brought laughter and joy to millions. My childhood would have been a lot sadder without him. Thanks for the joy, thanks for your talent and thanks for your life. I celebrate it in all of its beauty. God bless you, Mr. Hemsley.”

Hemsley was nominated for an Emmy in 1985 but lost to Bill Cosby.

SHOULD GEORGE ZIMMERMAN’S WIFE BE CHARGED WITH LYING?

I believe that if a person break’s the law, they should be treated like everyone else and charged with the crime. George Zimmerman’s wife was arrested Tuesday afternoon for allegedly lying at his bond hearing about the couple’s finances. Lying under oath is a crime. I’m not a lawyer, I’m justa dumb jock….hahaaa, but I think she should be charged. What do you think should happen in this situation?

Shellie N. Zimmerman, 25, faces a perjury charge, according to Jackie Barnard, spokeswoman for the State Attorney’s office for the Fourth Judicial District of Florida. She met conditions for a $1,000 bond and was released Tuesday afternoon, according to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.

At her husband’s April 20 bond hearing, Shellie Zimmerman was asked whether the couple had financial means to assist in the defense.

“Uhm, not — not that I’m aware of,” she replied, according to a probable cause affidavit filed Monday.

She also testified under oath she was not aware of how much had been raised from a website soliciting cash for George Zimmerman’s defense in the February shooting death of Trayvon Martin, 17, in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman said he acted in self-defense. Prosecutors alleged that George Zimmerman, 28, actually had about $135,000.

According to the affidavit, prepared by an investigator with the State Attorney’s office, the Zimmermans discussed finances via phone before the April 20 bond hearing.

Those talks included the transfer of money from George Zimmerman’s account to accounts of his sister and wife, according to the affidavit.

Records show $47,000 was transferred from George Zimmerman’s account to his sister’s account from April 16 and 17, authorities allege. Shellie Zimmerman transferred more than $74,000 from her husband’s account to her account from April 16 to April 19, the affidavit states.

George Zimmerman asked his wife in jail calls to “pay off all the bills,” including an American Express bill and a Sam’s Club card, prosecutors allege.

On April 24, after his release on bond, Shellie Zimmerman transferred more than $85,500 from her account back to George Zimmerman’s account, according to the affidavit.

Shellie Zimmerman will be arraigned July 31.

GEORGE ZIMMERMAN BACK IN JAIL AFTER BOND WAS REVOKED AFTER LYING ABOUT FINANCES

Sanford, Florida (CNN) — George Zimmerman was booked into jail Sunday after surrendering to authorities before an afternoon deadline, the Seminole County sheriff said.

Zimmerman met two members of the sheriff’s office in a business parking lot about 1:25 p.m. Sunday and was taken into custody, Sheriff Donald Eslinger told reporters.

Zimmerman was required to return to central Florida and turn himself in after a judge revoked his bail Friday, saying Zimmerman misled the court about his finances.

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, is accused of shooting unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in a gated community in Sanford in February. Zimmerman argues he acted in self-defense.

Eslinger said Zimmerman, who will be housed in administrative confinement, was “quiet and cooperative.”

Video from the jail showed Zimmerman exiting a white minivan, wearing handcuffs, jeans and a white button-down shirt, escorted by authorities.

“While out on bond, Mr. Zimmerman has been living in a secure, undisclosed location as there are significant threats against his life,” his attorneys said Sunday on the official website for his defense.

Asked how his client spent the weekend, attorney Mark O’Mara told reporters, “travel.”

He said Zimmerman was worried about coming out of hiding, “but I think he also realizes the judge’s concerns.”

O’Mara said he will be filing a motion Monday asking Lester for a new bond hearing to revisit Zimmerman’s status and allow the defense to “explain why what happened seems to have happened.”

AFTER RED TAILS, GEORGE LUCAS DOES SOMETHING AWESOME….AGAIN

Just when you thought that George Lucas had done it all. He does it all over again. George Lucas is master of proving people wrong. He did it with Star Wars, which was so far ahead of it’s time that film bosses believed that it will fail. It did not. He then decided to make a film about the Tuskegee Airmen with an all black cast. Once again, the film suits told him that films with all black casts do not make money. George made the film with his own money and it made tons of money. You go George!!!!

Now George Lucas is ruffling feathers once again. George Lucas has long wanted to build a massive studio complex on his posh property near San Francisco, but has been foiled by his Marin County neighbors for 25 years, even as subdivisions have gone up around him. Now he’s fighting fire with fire, giving up on his dream and instead building low-income housing on the property. We know — it’s pretty sweet. In the exquisitely titled article, “George Lucas Does Something Likeable For a Change,” Peter Hall nails it: “If there’s one thing rich people will hate more than having movie magic made in their backyard, it’s poor people moving in.”
