MANTI TE’O: IS THE NOTRE DAME LINEBACKER CRAZY OR JUST SEEKING ATTENTION?

I walked in to my apartment yesterday after a long day of work, plopped down on the couch and turned on the TV. My TV was on CNN and Anderson Cooper 360 was on. The story that he was talking about the Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o, who is supposed to be drafted in the first round to the NFL. As I watched, the story got more and more bizzare. Manti Te’o said Wednesday he was the victim of a “sick joke” that had him and legions of fans believing in a “girlfriend” who may never have existed.

Te’o was the subject of an inspirational story in which he overcame the deaths of his real-life grandmother and his girlfriend as his team marched toward the BCS National Championship Game.

Te’o, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, released a statement and Notre Dame held a news conference Wednesday night after the sports website Deadspin published an article that called the girlfriend story a hoax.

Last September and October, Te’o told interviewers the losses of the women, who reportedly died within hours of each other, inspired him to honor them with sterling play on the field.

“I miss ‘em, but I know that I’ll see them again one day,” he told ESPN.

That and other media reports led to a gripping human interest story of determination. The girlfriend was identified as Lennay Kekua, who had supposedly died of leukemia.

Jack Swarbrick, director of athletics at Notre Dame, told reporters that Te’o was the victim of an elaborate hoax. “And he will carry that with him for a while,” Swarbrick said. Investigators don’t know how many people may have participated in the hoax, he said.

Notre Dame said the relationship between Te’o and the supposed girlfriend involved online and lengthy telephone communication.

As part of the hoax, several meetings were set up, including in Hawaii, but Kekua never showed, Swarbrick said. The linebacker grew up in Hawaii.

Te’o's father, Brian, told the South Bend (Indiana) Tribune last fall that his son did have the opportunity to meet Kekua.

“They started out as just friends,” Brian Te’o said, according to the newspaper. “Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there. But within the last year, they became a couple.”

Media reports indicate the parents never met Kekua.

According to Swarbrick, Te’o in early December received a call from a woman claiming to be his girlfriend and telling him she was not dead. Those calls continued but Te’o did not answer, Swarbrick said.

Te’o's grandmother did in fact die in September, according to Deadspin, but there is no Social Security Administration record of the death of the athlete’s supposed girlfriend, described as a Stanford University student.

Stanford University’s registrar’s office told CNN that it has never had a student registered by Kekua’s name or an alternative spelling.

“Outside of a few Twitter and Instagram accounts, there’s no online evidence that Lennay Kekua ever existed,” Deadspin contends. “There was no Lennay Kekua.”

According to the website, Kekua, 22, had reportedly been in a serious auto accident in California and was later diagnosed with leukemia.

Photographs showing a young woman identified as Kekua in online tributes and news reports actually are photos from social media accounts of a 22-year-old California woman who is not named Lennay Kekua and does not have leukemia, according to Deadspin. The woman never met Te’o, it said.

Your opinion: What do you think?

After Notre Dame upset No. 10 Michigan State on September 15, Te’o told ABC about his late grandmother and girlfriend.

“They were with me. I couldn’t do it without them,” Te’o said. “I couldn’t do it without the support of my family and my girlfriend’s family.”

“I’m so happy that I had a chance to honor my grandma and my family and my girlfriend,” Te’o said. “That’s what it’s all about, family.”

Timothy Burke, co-author of the Deadspin article, told Miami sports radio host Dan Le Batard, “We got an e-mail last week saying something isn’t right” with the girlfriend story.

Te’o said Wednesday he “developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.”

In his statement reported by ESPN, the star said, “To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone’s sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.

“It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother’s death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life.”

Manti Te’o previously told reporters he and his girlfriend would spend hours speaking on the phone.

Notre Dame said it hired an independent investigative firm to look into the situation.

Swarbrick said the independent investigation found that the perpetrators were involved in “online chatter” indicating that it was a hoax, and Te’o was a victim.

“I will refer you to the documentary ‘Catfish,’” the athletic director said.

“Catfish” is no longer simply a river dweller, but rather a verb defined as “to pretend to be someone you’re not online by posting false information, such as someone else’s pictures, on social media sites usually with the intention of getting someone to fall in love with you,” according to an MTV show of the same name.

Swarbrick said he met with Te’o's family two days before Notre Dame played in the January 7 championship game and lost to Alabama. The linebacker is expected to be a first-round pick in the NFL draft this spring.

DIDIER DROGBA, ARRIVES IN SHANGHAI TO JOIN CHINESE FOOTBALL TEAM

Hours after being mobbed by hundreds of cheering fans at the airport upon his arrival, former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba made his official debut with new team Shanghai Shenhua Saturday afternoon and insisted his move was motivated by challenges of helping Chinese football.

“I didn’t come here with the idea of making a lot of money,” said the 34-year-old Ivory Coast football superstar at a press conference, despite local news reports naming him the highest paid player in China who earns more than $300,000 a week.

“I came here because of the completely different challenges from what I’ve seen in Europe before,” he said.

“I am here to win matches and be the champion — I am not here to retire,” he added.

Shortly after scoring the penalty that crowned Chelsea champions of Europe, Drogba signed an undisclosed two-and-a-half-year contract with Shenhua last month. He joins former Chelsea teammate Nicolas Anelka — who made the switch in January with a similar reported annual salary of $15 million — at a once-proud football club now struggling to keep its spot in the Chinese Super League.

“We have a difficult job to do, but we are going to work hard and try to make our fans happy,” said Drogba, before reminding the audience of Chelsea’s gradual ascent. “Maybe it’s going to take time but, believe me, we are going to do everything to achieve it.”

His arrival highlights the spending spree by Chinese football clubs on foreign talent. Supporters argue that Chinese players need to learn from the best and international stars give the sport’s weak following in China a much-needed boost.

“The most important thing is that I come here to help Chinese football,” Drogba said. “I think I have a little bit of experience — I come here to share that experience and some knowledge.”

Critics, however, describe the luring of top players to China as vanity projects by club owners more interested in benefiting their business empires than developing football at the grassroots level in the world’s most populous nation.

Shenhua’s owner, Zhu Jun, is an online gaming tycoon whose deep pockets brought Drogba and Anelka to Shanghai. But his company’s latest product — “Planetside 2″ — was prominently featured on Drogba’s uniform in a huge portrait that adorned the backdrop of the press conference, as fiery scenes from the game splashed on big screens.

“They play for Shanghai Shenhua, but they also serve as marketing vehicles for the parent company,” said Jiang Yi, managing editor of the Chinese edition of Sports Illustrated. “Football-wise, the money is obviously over the top — but if you look at the bigger picture, the money is well spent.”

On the outskirts of Beijing, coach He Hongguang feels even more concerned about the “money as solution” approach to improve Chinese football. Teaching a children’s football summer camp one recent morning, the former professional player said sports officials and club owners are focusing on the wrong thing.

“I think Chinese football is a bit too eager to achieve quick success and get instant benefits,” he said. “Football is not so popular in China like in neighboring South Korea and Japan, because they put great emphasis on training and cultivating young players.”

A tarnished reputation doesn’t help, either, as Chinese football has been dogged by years of corruption and mismanagement.

Since a nationwide crackdown began three years ago, dozens of senior football figures have been convicted of taking bribes and fixing matches, including two former national league chiefs who were both recently sentenced to more than 10 years in prison.

“There were some problems,” said Drogba. “The fact that they put it in the frontline — it’s because they want to stop it — so it’s good for football.”

And his mere presence in Shanghai appears to have already brought good fortune to Shenhua. With Drogba watching from the sidelines, the team beat archrival Beijing Guo’an 3-1 in a home game on a rainy Saturday night — exactly what the nicknamed “Magical Beast” promised fans earlier.

BRAZIL FOOTBALL TEAM REFUSES TO PLAY EAGLES IN NIGERIA DUE TO BOKO HARAM ATTACKS

The activities of terror group, Boko Haram, in northern Nigeria have denied the Super Eagles of a high-profile friendly against Brazil.

The Eagles were due to play the former world champions in Nigeria during a FIFA window in September but the recent bombings in some northern states forced the Brazilians to reconsider their proposed visit to Nigeria and sought another African side for the friendly. How embarassing!!!!
The Selacao thus settled for the Bafana Bafana of South Africa, but the match will be played either in Brazil or the USA on September 7. The Nigeria Football Federation however said the Nigeria versus Brazil friendly would still hold as planned. An official of the football body said that the organisers had not given up on bringing the Samba Boys to Nigeria. “The friendly has not been cancelled; the organizers are still hopeful of sorting out a few details in order to bring the Brazilians to Nigeria. It is actually Guinness The Match arrangement and the agent that is putting the match together is confident it will hold,” the NFF official said.
Nigeria is looking to play a high-profile friendly as coach Stephen Keshi continues to strengthen the team ahead of their crucial qualifiers for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2014 World Cup. The bombings in the north have also affected the hosting of league matches in the region. The Nigeria Premier League was forced to suspend the Week 28 match between Jigawa Golden Stars and Ocean Boys indefinitely due to the crisis in Kaduna. Both sides were scheduled to play in Jigawa on Wednesday.
Ocean Boys were forced to return to Abuja on Tuesday when they turned back from their journey to Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State.
The new date for the match has yet to be decided by the NPL.

SHOOTING AT APARTMENT COMPLEX NEAR AUBURN UNIVERSITY, 3 DEAD, 3 WOUNDED

Three people were killed and three others wounded in a shooting during a party at an apartment complex near Auburn University, Alabama authorities said Sunday. Among the dead were two Auburn students who had been on the football team.

A manhunt was underway Sunday for suspected gunman, identified by police as Desmonte Leonard, 22, of  Montgomery, Ala.

The dead were Edward Christian, 20, a football player who was out this season due to injuries; Ladarious Phillips, 20, a former football player; and Demario Pitts, 20, of Auburn.

The shooting happened late Saturday night at the University Heights apartments, a large complex near campus where many of Auburn University’s students and athletes live. Leonard is suspected of pulling a gun after a fight broke out, shooting six before fleeing, Auburn Police Chief Tommy Dawson said at a news conference on Sunday.

When police arrived, Christian was found dead on the sidewalk. Phillips and Pitts were transported to the hospital, where they later died.

Among the three wounded is John Robertson, 20, who is fighting for his life after being shot in the head, Dawson said at a news conference on Sunday afternoon. Xavier Moss, 19, was released from the hospital and Eric Mack, 20, was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police believe Leonard drove away from the scene in a white Chevrolet Caprice, which was later found abandoned.

“I don’t believe it was targeted. It was a fight and someone got carried away,” Dawson said of the shooting. “I don’t like the word random when it comes to shootings, but it was a fight that obviously got out of hand.”

This undated photo provided by the Auburn Police Division shows Desmonte Leonard, 22, of Montgomery, Ala., the suspect wanted for fatally shooting three people, including two former Auburn University football players, and wounding another three people during a party at an apartment complex near the school.

Asked about connections to the football team, Dawson said, “The only connection to the football team is that they are the victims of a brutal shooting. Sometimes the young men get a bad rap, I feel, but they’re the victims today.”

Ladarious Phillips, an Auburn University student and former football player, was among those killed at a shooting near the university.

“This is a sad, sad day for everyone associated with the entire Auburn family. I am devastated by the passing of three young men, including two that I personally knew in Ed Christian and Ladarious Phillips and my heart goes out to their families,” Auburn coach Coach Gene Chizik said in a statement. “My thoughts and prayers are with their families and all of the victims involved in this tragic incident. Nobody should ever have to endure such unimaginable grief, and we will love and support the victims’ families during this terribly difficult time. We have a lot of people on our football team that are hurting right now and we’re going to do everything we can to help them get through this.”

Turquorius Vines, 23, told The Associated Press he was at the pool party Saturday evening with one of his friends, Pitts. He said he and Pitts were approached by two other men who started arguing with them over a woman.

Auburn University student Edward Christian was among those killed at a party near the university on Saturday night. He had played football but was out due to a back injury.

Vines said he punched one of the men, while Pitts hit both of the men over the head with a bottle. Either one or both of the two men then started shooting, he said. He said his friend was shot and killed, while two others also were hit by gunfire. Vines said he had never before seen the men who he had been arguing with.

“It’s like I lost a lung,” Vines said. “I don’t know how I’m going to survive this.”

Mack, the wounded player, is a junior offensive lineman from St. Matthews, S.C. He played in five games last season. Chizik said Mack was expected to make a full recovery.

TERRELL OWENS FIRES LONGTIME AGENT DREW ROSENHAUS

Terrell Owens just keeps finding people to blame for his downward spiral. Everybody cannot be wrong. I have always said that I have a lot of love for Terrell Owens, but there is no smoke without fire.

Owens has severed ties with longtime agent Drew Rosenhaus and hired Jason Woy, a Dallas-based agent who represents current Cowboys Anthony Spencer, Jason Hatcher, Kenyon Coleman and Dan Bailey.

“I am making changes in my life so I can continue my career as a professional football player,” Owens said in a statement on his website. “I have hired Jordan Woy as my new agent.  It was important for me to hire someone who believes in my ability to help an NFL team and believes in me as a person.”

The 38-year-old wide receiver, recently released by the Allen (Texas) Wranglers of the Indoor Football League, still harbors visions of a return to the NFL, where he last played for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2010.

“I love the game of football and I know I can help a team,” Owens’ statement said. “I have had to go through some humbling times, but I am more determined than ever to show a team that I can be a huge asset to them as a player and a team leader in the locker room.”

After his very public release from the Wranglers, it was reported that the team offered Owens a $50 severance package that also included TO being evicted from the home the Wranglers provided him and forced to hand over the keys to a loaner Jeep Cherokee.

Shortly after, Owens demanded a public apology from the Wranglers and $160,000, an amount Owens believes he is owed for four game checks. According to his attorney, Owens was most upset that the team said a missed charity appearance at a local hospital played a role in his release.

Owens claimed the Wranglers privately acknowledged that a team publicist gave him an incorrect date for the visit.

“Our fans are amongst the best in the league and it is impossible to maintain a player when even our fans notice and comment on a player’s lack of effort both on and off the field,” Wranglers owner John Frankel said in a statement at the time of Owens’ release. “We need to do what is best for this team, our fans and this community.”

Owens appears ready to put the episode with the Wranglers behind him and focus on a return to the NFL, where he has played 15 seasons for five teams. For his career, Owens is sixth on the all-time list in receptions (1,078), second in receiving yards (15,934) and tied for second in receiving TDs (153).

“I am in the best shape of my life and preparing daily,” Owens said on his website. “I am looking for a team who will give me that chance and I know I will pay big dividends to them as a player and teammate.”

TERRELL OWEN’S PROBLEMS MOUNT – RELEASED BY INDOOR FOOTBALL TEAM

I have always loved Terrell Owens as a football player. Unfortunately, he is set to self destruct in 5-4-3-2-1.. His gifts as a football player  and two seasons of his highly rated, self-titled  TV show (The T.O. Show), were not enough to slow down his downward spiral. Terrell hasn’t had much success with controlling his emotions and his money. A recent article said that he is broke and now he gets cut by an Indoor Football team. Come on T.O.!! Get it together!!

Read  More..

Terrell Owens’ tenure in the Indoor Football League came to an unceremonious end Tuesday when the Allen Wranglers released the controversial former NFL receiver.

Owens signed with the Wranglers in February, receiving a six-figure salary and an ownership stake in the franchise located about 30 minutes north of Dallas. Owner Jon Frankel said Owens’ ownership stake has been terminated because he violated his contract.

Frankel cited Owens’ refusal to play in two upcoming road games that are critical to the Wranglers’ playoff hopes and Owens’ no-show for a scheduled appearance at a local children’s hospital as the breaking points in the team’s relationship with the receiver.

“Our fans are amongst the best in the league, and it is impossible to maintain a player when even our fans notice and comment on a player’s lack of effort both on and off the field,” Frankel said in a statement released to ESPNDallas.com. “We need to do what is best for this team, our fans and this community.”

Owens, who was not required to play in all of the Wranglers’ road games, released a statement through his publicist late Tuesday night. “I appreciate the opportunity that Mr. Frankel gave me and wish the Allen Wranglers all the best moving forward,” he said.

The statement called the manner in which Owens was released “unfortunate.” It said Owens played all games according to his contract and that his legal team is addressing details of the Wranglers’ news release but that Owens’ representatives could not comment beyond that. It also said Owens is focused on returning to the NFL.

The 38-year-old Owens, whose tenures with the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys all ended acrimoniously, had hoped that playing for the Wranglers could help him get back in the NFL. He received no interest from NFL teams last season despite ranking second all-time in receiving yards (15,934), fourth in touchdowns (156) and sixth in catches (1,078).

Wranglers general manager and former Cowboys great Drew Pearson believes Owens could still play in the NFL, if his performance was the only indicator.

“It’s very difficult to get back into the NFL, especially at that age,” Pearson told the “Ben & Skin Show” on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM on Wednesday morning. “To me, there’s no question he could play in the NFL. When I see these receivers that are playing, there is no question Terrell could still play in the NFL. But it’s not what happens between the lines with Terrell, unfortunately. It’s how he handles things outside the lines.”

Owens played one season each for the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals after being released by the Cowboys after the 2008 season despite being one year into a four-year, $34 million contract extension. He caught 72 passes for 983 yards and nine touchdowns for the Bengals in 2010.

After Owens recovered from knee surgery to repair a torn ACL he suffered after the 2010 season, agent Drew Rosenhaus organized a nationally televised workout to prove his client was healthy. No scouts attended the workout.

Owens caught 35 passes for 420 yards and 10 touchdowns in eight games for the Wranglers.

“It’s disappointing and unfortunate,” Frankel said of releasing Owens, “but [he] could no longer be tolerated by the Wrangler organization.”

BRIAN BANKS TO GET ANOTHER CHANCE TO MAKE HIS NFL DREAMS COME TRUE

Brian Banks was exonerated last week on a decade-old rape conviction was looking ahead Thursday to try to relaunch a dream taken from him because of prison time he served in the case, the chance to play in the National Football League. Brian was a football standout at Long Beach Polytechnic High School and had been offered a scholarship to play at the University of Southern California when he was accused of rape. Watch this emotional video here:

Fearing a potentially long sentence, he followed the advice of his attorney and pleaded no contest to assaulting a classmate. But he maintained his innocence throughout nearly six years of imprisonment, subsequent probation and registration as a sex offender. And, according to the California Innocence Project, the woman later admitted that Banks had not kidnapped or raped her during a consensual encounter. A judge in California tossed out his conviction last week.

It didn’t take long for NFL teams to start contacting Banks with tryout invitations, according to news reports, with six in line to work him out.

First among them was the Seattle Seahawks, coached by Pete Carroll, the same man who offered that scholarship to Banks a decade ago, according to a report in the Seattle Times.

“I feel very confident in getting that tryout and producing on the field,” Banks said. “I’ve been working extremely hard for this opportunity.”

Banks was a linebacker in high school, and his team won a state championship when he was a junior, according to the Seattle Times report.

A Super Bowl championship is obviously a long way away, but the 6-foot-2, 245-pound Banks told ESPN’s Rick Reilly he has been working out since October and is confident he’s ready to take the first step in the NFL.

“I’ll make ‘em happy,” ESPN quotes him as saying. “After all I’ve been through these last 10 years, I can still do some things that will impress you.”

BRIAN BANKS, CALIFORNIA BLACK MALE’S RAPE CONVICTION THROWN OUT

I’m so tired of seeing stories like these. We say that we live in a color blind world, but that is so far from the truth. A girl falsely accused this black man of rape and he got sent to prison for a crime he did not commit. While in prison, his accuser was awarded an over $1 million civil settlement. How crazy is this?! Read more

(CNN) — Brian Banks was on “Cloud 10″ Friday, the first full day of the rest of his life, after he was exonerated of a rape he did not commit.

“Today, it started to sink in a little more,” Banks told CNN’s Ashleigh Banfield. “I am overwhelmed. I feel great.”

At age 17, fearing a potentially long sentence, the college football prospect followed the advice of his attorney and pleaded no contest to assaulting a Long Beach, California, high school classmate in 2002.

Banks maintained his innocence throughout nearly six years of imprisonment, subsequent probation and registration as a sex offender.

The case took an incredible twist when the alleged victim sent a Facebook friend request to Banks in early 2011.

According to the California Innocence Project, the woman later admitted that Banks had not kidnapped or raped her during a consensual encounter at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, where Banks was a middle linebacker with a scholarship offer from the University of Southern California.

An emotional Banks, 26, lowered his head and fought back tears Thursday when prosecutors said they were moving to have the conviction dismissed.

“We do not believe Mr. Banks did the crime he pled guilty to,” Deputy District Attorney Brentford Ferreira said after court. “Justice has been served.”

A judge concurred and tossed the conviction.

Rape conviction overturned

“I was overcome with relief but reminded of the pain and suffering I went through in prison and parole,” Banks said. “All the false accusations against me.”

Banks put bitterness aside, though, expressing no interest in taking legal action against the woman who recanted.

“For me, I just want to be positive. I want to be in a better position than what I was yesterday,” Banks said. “The only way that can happen is by eliminating any negative ill will or feelings toward anyone.”

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Friday that it is not currently involved in any investigation of the woman.

“Our standard is beyond a reasonable doubt,” spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said, referring further questions to Long Beach police.

Police spokeswoman Lisa Massacani said Friday that there was no current investigation.

According to CNN Los Angeles affiliate KTLA, the accuser won a $1.5 million settlement in a civil suit against the Long Beach Unified School District. She claimed that the school’s lax security provided an unsafe environment that led to the alleged rape.

It was not clear whether the school district will try to recoup any of the settlement. A message seeking comment was not immediately returned.

The California Innocence Project took up Banks’ case and went to court on his behalf, saying he and the woman never had sexual intercourse. The alleged victim expressed concern about having to return money she received in the civil suit, the group said.

The group’s director, Justin Brooks, said the Banks case is not uncommon. “Plea bargains have become the 95% solution.”

“Brian has learned that anger is going to eat you up,” Brooks said. “If we hadn’t gotten that recantation, Brian would have gone through this the rest of his life.”

Although he did not have the opportunity to play college football, Banks maintains a dream of playing for the National Football League.

“I’m hoping to draw the attention of some team that takes interest in my story, takes interest in my hard work and gives me an opportunity,” he told KTLA.

CHELSEA READY TO LET DIDIER DROGBA LEAVE: NO LOYALTY

There is truly no loyalty in pro sports. Didier Drogba, the man who helped Chelsea win the League Championship, is leaving Chelsea. This is a culmination of so much disrespect to Drogba by the team. Even though Didier is 34, he has continued to be a dominant force in football. He is the first African player to score against Brazil in world cup in addition to several spectacular goals. Yet Chelsea tried to relegat him to the bench.

Chelsea and Didier Drogba will announce the striker’s departure in the next few days, with both sides reconciled to the fact that a parting of the ways after Saturday’s victorious Champions League final is now inevitable.

Drogba’s role in the club’s win on penalties over Bayern Munich did fuel speculation that he might stay, but in reality the decision was made some time ago that he would not sign a new contract when his existing deal runs out. The club do not see the logic of giving the Ivorian the two-year deal he wants and being a free agent will be lucrative for Drogba, with the possibility of following Nicolas Anelka to the Chinese super league.

There were quotes attributed to Drogba last night to the effect that he was prepared for a “leap into the unknown” but the player denied, through the club, that they were his words. In the same report, from France Football magazine, it was claimed that Drogba had told his Chelsea team-mates that he was leaving the club during their open-top bus tour of west London on Sunday afternoon.

Nevertheless, a formal announcement is expected in the next few days, with the parting on amicable terms. After eight years with Chelsea there could hardly have been a more remarkable finale to his time than the winning penalty in the Champions League final.

Drogba’s most likely option is Shanghai Shenhua, although that is by no means certain. The Chinese club have emerged as one of the biggest payers in world football, signing Anelka from Chelsea in January on a two-year deal worth £220,000 a week, and they have long been the favourites to sign his former team-mate.

While the Chinese super league club’s capacity to pay is not in doubt, they are struggling this season in 12th position in a 16-team league after 11 games.

Yesterday, Anelka expressed his first doubts about staying there, having been appointed “player coach” after the dismissal of the manager, Jean Tigana. In effect, he is working under Jean-Florent Ikwange, the acting head coach.

Anelka’s comments, translated from Chinese, suggested frustration at club politics: “If there is still no one to support me and [they] continue to play little tricks behind my back, then I will quickly decide whether or not to retire. This will be decided on what happens in the next few weeks.”

The decision on Roberto Di Matteo’s future is unlikely to be made by the end of the week. The interim Chelsea manager, having delivered the Champions League and the FA Cup, is playing at the BMW PGA Championship pro-am golf event at Wentworth tomorrow.

The Chelsea chief executive, Ron Gourlay, said: “Now we have to sit down over the next week or two, or however long it takes, because we’ve got to do what is right for the football club.”

DIDIER DROGBA’S HEART KEY TO CHELSEA’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE VICTORY

If anyone deserved a Champions League winner’s medal it had to be Didier Drogba and, in leading Chelsea to victory over Bayern Munich in the final of Europe’s elite club competition, he had earned it.

After all the heartache and agony of defeats in one previous final, three semi-finals, one quarter-final and two last-16 rounds, the Ivory Coast striker clinically scored the decisive spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out at the Allianz Arena to famously erase all those previous scars.

The red card against Manchester United in the 2008 final , the tirade into the television camera after a controversial defeat by Barcelona, as well as a penalty shoot-out loss to Liverpool, Drogba’s pain on the Champions League stage has been hard to enough to watch let alone endure.

Drogba’s highs and lows during his Chelsea career

  • 2004-05: Drogba’s 16 goals help Chelsea win their first top-flight title in 50 years. He also scores the winner in the League Cup final.
  • 2006-07: Becomes the first Chelsea player since Kerry Dixon to reach 30 goals in a season, including two in the League Cup final win over Arsenal and the winner in the FA Cup final against Manchester United. He is named African player of the year.
  • 2007-08: Expresses a desire to leave Chelsea following the departure of Jose Mourinho, but later says he regrets the comments. Becomes leading scorer in League Cup finals with consolation goal in Chelsea’s loss to Tottenham. Involved in controversy over alleged elbow on Man Utd’s Nemanja Vidic and accusations of diving by then Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez. Sent off in the Champions League final, which Chelsea lose on penalties to Man Utd.
  • 2008-09: Banned for three matches for throwing a coin into a section of Burnley fans during a Carling Cup defeat. Labels referee Tom Henning Ovrebo a “disgrace” during a foul-mouthed tirade to TV cameras after his side’s Champions League exit at the hands of Barcelona. Scores his sixth goal in major cup final as Chelsea beat Liverpool to win the FA Cup.
  • 2009-10: Wins Golden Boot for his 29 goals that help Chelsea win the Premier League.
  • 2010-11: Drogba contracts malaria, but makes full recovery. Named in Time magazine’s 100 most influential people for role in peace process in Ivory Coast.
  • 2011-12: Scores his seventh goal at Wembley in FA Cup semi-final win and becomes first player to score in four FA Cup finals in win over Liverpool. Scores equaliser and winning penalty in the shoot-out as Chelsea beat Bayern Munich to win the Champions League.

Despite being a player who has consistently delivered for Chelsea, as his nine goals in nine finals are a testament to, the glory of lifting the trophy of Europe’s top competition had always eluded him in a manner where it just did not seem to be.

Drogba, though, maintained the faith. And, on a glorious night in Munich, his crusade reached a successful end.

Accused of being an “actor” by some because of his theatrics, this time he put in a performance more in keeping with the power and poise which has made him such a feared opponent for defences.

He scored with a bullet header to equalise against Bayern before converting the crucial penalty for Chelsea’s victory.

The man himself put the success down to divine intervention.

“It was [fate],” said the 34-year-old, whose penalty to clinch Chelsea’s victory may be his last kick for the Stamford Bridge outfit. “I believe a lot in destiny. I pray a lot. It was written a long time ago. God is wonderful. This team is amazing.

“I’m very happy. Life is fantastic.”

Drogba started out on the Champions League road by scoring on his debut in the competition for Marseille in a 4-2 defeat at Real Madrid in September 2003.

Seventy-five appearances and 39 goals later and he could look at the Champions League winners’ medal adorned around his neck with a sense of fulfilment and achievement that he had conquered the peaks both on the European and domestic stage.

A tribute to Drogba’s determination and resolve, he was a periphery figure seemingly on his way out of Chelsea under former boss Andre Villas-Boas during the first half of the season.

But, as has so consistently been the case during nearly eight years with the Blues, he came to their rescue when the club needed him most.

“Didier Drogba has been the best centre forward of his type, certainly in the Premier League, for the past eight years,” former Manchester United defender and Sunderland manager Steve Bruce told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It could be his last appearance but I sincerely hope it isn’t because he’s still got something to offer, as we’ve seen. He is a big player for the big occasion.

“If they’re going to replace him, how are they going to replace him?

“He has been quite fantastic, year in and year out.

“It’s quite fitting that he got the equaliser and it’s quite fitting that he got the penalty if he is going to bow out.

“When you’re sitting in a dressing before a big cup final, you can turn round to him and know he’s going to show up and be the big player that he is.

“And that’s what makes the great players.

“He dives over and falls over at times but when the big trophies are there he can certainly produce.”

While there is plenty to admire about Drogba’s qualities on the pitch, it is a tribute to the 2006 and 2009 African Footballer of the Year that he uses his fame to try to bring peace to his native Ivory Coast.

He is one of the 11 members of Ivory Coast’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission and, although his team-mate Frank Lampard was talking about his value to Chelsea, he also summed up what he means to so many.

“He is a hero,” Lampard said.

This is the cutest video ever. This video clearly shows how important it is, for fathers to stay present in their daughter’s lives.

De Graafschap midfielder Rogier Meijer, whose Dutch soccer squad was relegated from the Eredivisie following a 1-1 draw with FC Den Bosch on Sunday. But shining a light in the gloom was his daughter, who made her way onto the pitch to console her dad in the most adorable way possible. Thank heaven, for little girls.

TIM TEBOW TO NEW YORK, NOT ABOUT WINNING, BUT ABOUT MONEY

That didn’t take long. NFLShop.com is already selling Tim Tebow Jets jerseys online for $84.99. Tebow’s No. 15 Broncos jersey has been one of the NFL’s best-sellers the past two seasons. Look for sales of his new Jets jersey to take off as he plays in the country’s largest media market.

Tim Tebow hasn’t even picked a number and his jersey is selling like crazy!! It’s been estimated that Tim Tebow sold between 4 and 5 million jerseys while in Denver. If we do some quick mathematics, even if the Jets make a profit of $25 per jersey, they will make $100,000,000 by selling 4 million jerseys in just one year. That my friends is what it’s all about.  That is more money than Tim Tebow will ever make in his entire career as a football player!!

So called sports specialists have been going on and on about how bad the idea to bring Tim Tebow to the New York Jets is, but none of them have talked about money. Many owners are in football for the money and perks of being an owner of a professional sports team. Many of these teams lose money, so when a business savvy owner sees an opportunity to actually make a massive return on their investment, you better believe that they will jump on it. It’s very simple. The New York Jets are planning a press conference for Tim Tebow, the backup quaterback. No one does a press conference for a back up quaterback if they are not planning to make a boat load of money from them. The press conference will spike the sales of the jerseys. At the press conference, Tim Tebow will select a number and hold up his New York Jets jersey and firestorm of sales will begin.

It’s all about the money people!!!
