NGO OKAFOR STARS OPPOSITE JONAH HILL AND JAMES FRANCO

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE-

NGO OKAFOR STARS OPPOSITE JONAH HILL AND JAMES FRANCO IN “TRUE STORY”, PRODUCED BY BRAD PITT

New York, New York, May 13th, 2013—The star meter for the most downloaded black male model,  Ngo Okafor, continues to skyrocket. Okafor’s body of work as an actor is stacking up at a furious pace. Ngo has just wrapped shooting his part in the feature film, “True Story”, opposite Hollywood heavy hitters Jonah Hill and James Franco. “True Story” is produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment. Ngo Okafor plays the part of Ibrahim, an Ibo (Nigerian language) translator, in the film.

“True Story,” an adaptation of New York Times journalist Michael Finkel’s 2006 memoir of the same name, chronicles Finkel’s discovery that his identity had been stolen by Christian Longo, a fugitive who was placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted list after murdering his family and fleeing to Mexico. Hill is portraying Finkel on screen, with James Franco playing the role of Longo.

Mr. Finkel was banished as a contributing writer for The New York Times in early 2002 for faking much of a magazine cover storyabout the travails of a young African plantation worker, who turned out to be a composite. Seeking redemption, he quickly struck up what proved to be a mutually exploitive relationship — mixing friendship, journalism and some bizarre exploration of shared reality — with one Christian Longo.

Mr. Longo had just murdered his wife and three children in Oregon. And then, improbably, Mr. Longo assumed Mr. Finkel’s identity as he went on the lam outside the United States.

2013 ACADEMY AWARDS: AND THE WINNER GOES TO…

Steven Spielberg had a great day at the Academy Awards nominations, where his Civil War saga “Lincoln” led with 12 nominations.

It was not so great for Kathryn Bigelow, Tom Hooper and Ben Affleck, whose films did well but surprised — dare we say shocked? — Hollywood by failing to score directing nominations for the three filmmakers.

“I just think they made a mistake,” said Alan Arkin, a supporting-actor nominee for Affleck’s Iran hostage-crisis tale “Argo.”

“Lincoln,” ”Argo,” Bigelow’s Osama bin Laden manhunt thriller and Hooper’s Victor Hugo musical “Les Miserables” landed among the nine best-picture contenders Thursday.

Also nominated for the top honor were the old-age love story “Amour”; the independent hit “Beasts of the Southern Wild”; the slave-revenge narrative “Django Unchained”; the shipwreck story “Life of Pi”; and the lost-souls romance “Silver Linings Playbook.”

A mostly predictable bunch. But it’s baffling how Bigelow — the first woman to earn the directing Oscar for her 2009 best-picture winner “The Hurt Locker” — missed out on a nomination for one of last year’s most-acclaimed films.

“Yes, it was a surprise,” Spielberg said of Bigelow. “But I’ve been surprised myself through the years, so I know what it feels like.”

Spielberg was snubbed for a directing slot on 1985′s “The Color Purple,” which earned 11 nominations, including best picture. He also was overlooked for director on 1975′s “Jaws,” another best-picture nominee.

“I never question the choices the academy branches make, because I’ve been in the same place that Kathryn and Ben find themselves today,” said Spielberg, who finally got his Oscar respect in the 1990s with best-picture and director wins for “Schindler’s List” and another directing trophy for “Saving Private Ryan.” ”I’m grateful if I’m nominated, and I’ve never felt anything other than gratitude even when I’m not — gratitude for at least having been able to make the movie. So I never question the choices.”

Especially this time, when “Lincoln” has positioned itself as the film to beat at the Feb. 24 Oscars. Its nominations include best actor for Daniel Day-Lewis for his monumental performance as Abraham Lincoln, supporting actress for Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln and supporting actor for Tommy Lee Jones as abolitionist firebrand Thaddeus Stevens.

Oscar directing contenders usually are identical or at least line up closely with those for the Directors Guild of America Awards. But only Spielberg and “Life of Pi” director Ang Lee made both lists this time.

The Directors Guild also nominated Affleck, Bigelow and Hooper, but the Oscars handed its other three slots to David O. Russell for “Silver Linings Playbook” and two real longshots: veteran Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke for “Amour” and newcomer Benh Zeitlin, who made his feature debut with “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”

Zeitlin, whose low-budget, dream-like film about a wild child in Louisiana’s flooded backwoods won the top honor at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, said he never expected to be competing “alongside the greatest filmmakers alive.”

“I’m completely freaking out,” Zeitlin said. “Those guys taught me how to make films. The VHS pile that was on the VCR when I was born was past Spielberg movies, and that’s why I started wanting to do this, was watching them thousands and thousands of times.”

Other nominees were caught off guard over how the category shook out.

“I would be lying if I didn’t say I was surprised,” Russell, a past nominee for “The Fighter,” said about Bigelow.

Lee, who won the directing Oscar for “Brokeback Mountain,” agreed that there were surprises — but pleasant ones, particularly for Zeitlin’s inclusion.

“Newcomers, veterans, a European,” Lee said. “It’s great company, and it’s an honor to line up with them, and encouraging because there is a newcomer.”

Colleagues of snubbed filmmakers were not so happy.

“That put a damper on my enthusiasm,” ”Argo” co-star Arkin said of Affleck, an A-lister who’s arguably proving himself a better director than actor. “I thought his work was the work of an old master, not somebody with just two films under his belt. I thought it was an extraordinary piece of directing.”

“I would have loved him to have been recognized in this,” Hugh Jackman, a best-actor nominee as Hugo’s tragic hero Jean Valjean for “Les Miserables,” said of director Hooper. “But no one will be able to take away the achievement, nor really that the eight nominations that ‘Les Miz’ has are more shared with him than with anyone.”

Composer Alexandre Desplat, who wrote the music for “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Argo” and earned a best-score nomination for the latter, said he was puzzled over Affleck and Bigelow’s exclusion.

“I think they both deserved to be nominated,” Desplat said. “Unfortunately, I don’t decide.”

“Zero Dark Thirty” has had backlash in Washington, where some lawmakers say it falsely suggests that torture produced a tip that led the U.S. military to Bin Laden. It’s hard to imagine that affecting the film’s Oscar nominations, though, given Hollywood’s history of playing loose with facts in depicting true-life stories.

The academy’s directing snubs virtually take “Argo,” ”Les Miserables” and “Zero Dark Thirty” out of the best-picture race, since a movie almost never wins the top prize if the filmmaker is not nominated. It can happen — 1989′s “Driving Miss Daisy” did it — but a directing nomination usually goes hand-in-hand with a best-picture win.

The nominations held other surprises. “Amour” won the top prize at last May’s Cannes Film Festival but mainly was considered a favorite for the foreign-language Oscar. It wound up with five nominations, the same number as “Zero Dark Thirty,” which came in with expectations of emerging as a top contender.

Along with best-picture, director and foreign-language film, “Amour” picked up nominations for Haneke’s screenplay and best actress for Emmanuelle Riva as an ailing, elderly woman tended by her husband.

“It’s the last stage of my life, so this nomination is a gift to me, a dream I could never had imagined,” Riva said. “Michael’s talent is to make the film real. … That’s why it touched the world. We are all little, fragile people on this earth, sometimes nasty, sometimes generous.”

Riva is part of a multi-generational spread: At 85, Riva is the oldest best-actress nominee ever, while 9-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis is the youngest ever for her role as the spirited bayou girl in “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”

Spielberg matched his personal Oscar best as “Lincoln” tied the 12 nominations that “Schindler’s List” received.

Two of Spielberg’s stars could join the Oscar super-elite. Both Day-Lewis and Field have won two Oscars already. A third would put them in rare company with previous triple winners Ingrid Bergman, Walter Brennan, Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep. Katharine Hepburn holds the record with four acting Oscars.

A best-picture win would be Spielberg’s second, while another directing win would be his third, a feat achieved only by Frank Capra and William Wyler, who each earned three directing Oscars, and John Ford, who received four.

“Lincoln” also was the ninth best-picture nominee Spielberg has directed, moving him into a tie for second-place with Ford. Only Wyler directed more best-picture nominees, with 13.

“I think Steven is a full-fledged genius. I think he has transformed the motion-picture industry more than once, and he’s constantly pushing the envelope and changing,” Field said. “He stands alone. And he has the most profound respect, and he’s a scholar of John Ford and William Wyler and many others. … He’s a scholar of all of this because he’s so endlessly curious.”

SHARING IS CARING!! THANK YOU FOR WATCHING “A DOG NAMED GARY”

Sharing is caring. This old saying is true in every sense of the word. Thanks to all of you, who have taken the time to watch “A Dog Named Gary”. I know that you are extremely busy, so we truly appreciate you doing it. Thanks to you, our film now has  about 600 views, in just a few short days. The reason why the success of this film is so important is that it shows that anyone can do this. Anyone of us, regular folks, can make movies. If I can d it, you can do it too!!

You don’t need millions of dollars. You don’t need to wait to be cast in  someone else’s movie. You can make your own movie. Tyler Perry, who is a huge role model for me, did it.  He started out by producing and starring in his own plays and then moved on to making and starring in his own films. We can all do it. If you can tell a story and have no problems with working hard, you can make your own films. So, thank you again for watching “A Dog Named Gary”. Gary thank you also.

I PRESENT “A DOG NAMED GARY”: THE FIRST FILM THAT I WROTE, PRODUCED AND ACTED IN

I’m excited to present to you my first film – “A Dog Named Gary”. I would like to thank my co-star, Gary, my dog, who was the real star of this film. He was great. With his amazing energy and attitude, Gary is perfect for film.

Even though it was hard work making this film happen, I had so much fun doing it. We spent several days shooting and editing. As a writer, this film finally gave me the validation that I had been looking for my entire life. My father is a great writer. I held my father to such high standards that I never thought that I would ever be able to compare to him. I found my voice though. I’ve learned that we are both great in our own right. Our writing styles are different and it’s OK.

I’ve always believed that the only way to truly control my career is to create the type of the work I want to do. I would like to thank Kevin Swish and Mo Nowlin for helping me make this project a reality. Kevin wrote the screenplay for “A Dog Named Gary” and Mo directed and edited the film. These are two young guys on the rise. Extremely talented!!

Please enjoy our film. The flood gates have now been kicked open. There will be many more films to come. Stay tuned.

NIGERIAN FILM MARKETERS BAN GHANA’S GHOLLYWOOD MOVIE DISTRIBUTION IN NIGERIA

SPECULATIONS are rife that the once harmonious relationship between the Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood and its counterpart, Ghana’s Ghollywood,is currently under threat as the movie marketers under the aegis of Film, Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (FVPMAN) has placed embargo  on Ghanaian films with effect from the end of this month.
The association has also resolved to halt the distribution of films produced by non-professionals. It insists that if such film(s) must be distributed at all, its right of ownership should be transferred to its members on negotiation.
The  FVPMAN chairman, Onitsha branch, Mr. Uzo Godson Nwosu who confirmed this development to HVP, said this position was taken after the association’s general meeting last weekend in Onitsha.
According to him, the decision became necessary following the position taken by their Ghanaian counterparts who have banned the distribution of Nigerian films in their country long time ago.
His words, “starting from the first week of August, no Ghanaian film will be allowed to enter the Nigerian market again. We have resolved that no Ghanaian film will be distributed within our controlled market. Our Ghanaian counterparts have long stopped distributing our films in their country, and given this development, we have no choice than to reciprocate the gesture.” FVPMAN boss stated.
Nwosu who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Guinks Investment said any of  their members who failed  to compile with this new order will either  be prosecuted or have his goods confiscated by the association.
The marketer said the association is finalising plans to storm Ghana any moment from now, particularly to confront those local  television stations who are illegally airing Nigerian films without obtaining permission from the right owners.
Also, given the problem associated with “second tier market”(where a producer is compelled to observe a three-month  grace before releasing his film into the market in a large quality), Nwosu said the association has decided to reversed the trend.
Film owners, according to him, are now free to release their films into the market without necessarily observing the mandatory  three months grace before doing so.
They will also be required  to obtain censors’ board and copy right commission’s documents in addition to registering the film with the sum of N10,000 with the FVPMAN.
“In order to move the association forward, we have resolved to address the problem of second tier market.” FVPMAN boss further stated.

JUST ANOTHER DAY

I woke up this morning, moving a bit slowly. No real reason, just have a lot on mind. I’m working on my plans for Nigeria. I have to make sure that everything is in place before I leave in a few short weeks. I am also in the middle of editing my documentary. We are cutting a reel of the footage fom Nigeria. I intend to do a small screening here in NYC, of the footage, before I head to Nigeria as well. Heavy is the crown, but I will not have it any other way. I’m happy to have a bunch of stuff in the fire. It keeps me sharp. It keeps me alive.

This will be an extremely short blog post because I have a very full day today and I have to run out in 20 minutes. Bear with me. One thing that I have learned in this very busy period is to use the calendar on my Android phone. In the past, I would rely on my brain to set all my schedules, but when you have so much going on, it’s easy to forget a meeting here or a call there. It’s like having your own little assistant. The schedule alarm rings to alert you of a meeting, this way, you can focus on the bigger picture, instead of constantly trying to figure out your to-do list and whether you’ve forgotten anything.  It’s free. You pay the bill for the phone anyway, so you might as well use all the functions on it.

I’ll have a much longer blog for you tomorrow. I’m heading out to my editor’s studio in a few minutes to finish up work on the Nigeria footage. I will have a copy of the footage available for you to view within the next couple of days. Stay tuned for that.

GREETINGS FROM THE TRENCHES

It’s been quite a few days since I wrote in my blog. If you are in America, I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving.

As you might have noticed, I haven’t written a blog post in a while. This is so because the past two weeks have been the busiest in a very long time. I had been putting in 18 hour days. It’s difficult to get the mind settled for long enough to write when there is so much going on. It was difficult to wind down enough in order to get some sleep, let alone write a blog.

I was working on setting up a kickstarter.com page. Kickstarter as I mentioned in a previous post is a website designed to help filmmakers raise funds to complete their projects. People usually have a graphics and media department that handles things such as this. Being that I don’t have such a department, I have to do all the set up myself. I did all the writting and graphic design for the page. Take a look at the image to the left, I designed that. It is the poster for the film. I usually love writting, graphic design and video editing, but there was just so much of it. I got it done though. Noone wants to listen to excuses, they just want to know that you delivered. It literarily felt like I was in a trench while I was doing much of this work because I rarely saw the light of day. It is all done though!!

Another major thing that took up much of my time was working on finalizing contract issues with a PR company in Nigeria. In my experience, much of business lives and dies in the contract. You have to go through every word, every line and every paragraph with a fine tooth comb. It’s always best to have a lawyer take a look at all your contracts before you sign. Contracts are usually written to cover the interests of the other party, so you must make sure that you are covered before signing. This was a rigorous process, but thankfully, We were able to get it done. It is signed now and we are ready to move forward with the trip to Nigeria.

So now the page is done, please check it out and give. Please help support my project and help make this film come true. Thank you

KICKSTART YOUR LIFE!!

It’s friiiiiday!!!!!  The weekend is here and I’m extremely excited. I’m excited not because I’m going to be resting, but because offices will be closed. This way, I can focus on my own projects without receiving any calls. I shot a video yesterday which will run as an introduction to my trailer. The video will run on kickstarter.com. I have to edit the video and get it ready for the web.

Kickstarter.com is a website designed to help filmmakers raise funds to produce their projects. Websites such as kickstater.com are a blessing to independent filmmakers because these filmmakers don’t have bottomless pockets with which to make their films. When you have a story to tell, you just want to get it out. You want to share it with the world. At first, my project was denied by the website. Being the type of person who never takes ‘no’ for an answer, I pushed back and finally, my project got accepted. I was very happy when that happened because  filmmakers need all the help they can getin order to raise the money needed to produce their projects. Kickstarter.com and other fund raising websites take the fundraising global. Everyone in the world can look at projects and have an opportunity to donate to projects they like. It’s a win-win for both sides. The filmmaker gets to acquire the funds needed to make their film and the donor gets to do a great thing.

This video will help kickstart the process of completing the documentary. The money I raise will go a long way to raise awareness and help rebuild the amateur boxing program in Nigeria. Film is the most effective medium to tell stories especially inspirational such as this one. Please keep an eye out my kickstarter page.

Have a great weekend.
