CHRIS BROWN AND FRANK OCEAN FIGHT: POLICE INVOLVED

20130129-085642.jpgA day after a parking lot altercation
that has both sides pointing fingers and Frank Ocean asking for charges to be filed against Chris Brown, Breezy’s attorney is reportedly eager to have his client talk to investigators.

Odd Future crooner Ocean has already spoken to cops and is “desirous of prosecution in this incident,”
according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s spokesman, who said Brown has been named as a suspect in a battery report.

On Monday, TMZ, which early on quoted an unnamed source saying Brown was not involved in the brawl, reported that law enforcement sources told them that Brown’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, has been in touch. Famed Los Angeles attorney Geragos, who has handled cases for everyone from Michael Jackson and Winona Ryder to accused murderer Scott Peterson, reportedly told police that Brown is “ready, willing and able” to give them an account of the fight, because Geragos said his client was not involved.

Unnamed sources told the site that Geragos’ team have a surveillance tape of the end of the scuffle that shows that Brown did not throw any punches. TMZ reported that the tape also clears Ocean, who does not appear to throw punches either. The fighting appears to be between the singer’s respective crews. The video, however, only captures the end of the fight and is not conclusive, because it started in the parking lot of a Los Angeles recording studio where there were no cameras.

The altercation ended up in the lobby of the studio, where it was caught on camera. TMZ said Brown’s account is “radically different” from that of an unnamed witness who claimed that the singer threw the first punch. That witness told TMZ that Brown started the fight after Ocean dissed him in front of his crew and refused to shake Breezy’s hand. The source added that Frank laughed at the dis, while Brown was so angered he “coldcocked Ocean and started an all-out war.”

Once the fight moved to the lobby, sources said it demolished the studio, as the brawlers “managed to break almost everything in the room and scare all of the staff members” before the receptionist called 911. The Sheriff’s spokesman said officials do not believe the incident rises to the level of an assault and could just be a “minor scuffle over a parking spot.”

If Brown is implicated or charged, it could have serious implications on his five-year probation from his 2009 assault on on-again, off-again girlfriend Rihanna.

Brown has one more year of probation left to serve from the highly publicized 2009 incident, but this new brawl with Ocean could land him in hot water again. Neither Brown nor Ocean has issued a formal statement on the matter, though both have taken to social media to update their followers, with Ocean tweeting that he “got jumped” by Chris and a couple guys.”

On Monday, Brown Instagrammed that he was trying to focus on his work, “not negativity,” before posting a drawing of Jesus on the cross with the caption: “Painting the way I feel today. Focus on what matters!”

Both Brown and Ocean are Grammy nominees, and though the show had to shuffle its lineup in 2009 after Brown’s assault on Rihanna, sources at CBS and the Recording Academy told Entertainment Weekly that as of right now the fight should not affect the February 10 show’s scheduled performances. Neither Brown nor Ocean have been officially announced as Grammy performers, but Ocean did tweet that an injury to his finger as a result of the fight means “I can’t play w/two hands at the Grammys.”

COCA COLA STEPS INTO TO THE RING TO HELP FIGHT OBESITY IN AMERICA

It’s a statistic we’ve been hearing far too often — and for far too long. Two-thirds of American adults are either overweight or obese — and the problem is only getting worse.

Even Coca-Cola, the world’s largest beverage company, is now calling obesity “the issue of this generation.”

The world’s most valuable brand took the last seat at a crowded table Monday, when it launched an ad campaign aimed at “reinforcing its efforts to work together with American communities, business and government leaders to find meaningful solutions to the complex challenge of obesity.”

The first commercial of the campaign, a two-minute video called “Coming Together,” begins with a voice-over: “For over 125 years, we’ve been bringing people together. Today, we’d like people to come together on something that concerns all of us: obesity.” The spots are scheduled to run on television, including CNN, beginning this week.

Coca-Cola points out in the video it offers 180 low- and no-calorie beverages out of more than 650 beverage products.

Coke has come under increased fire over the past year as a predominant target of an anti-obesity crusade, led in large part by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, also known as the CSPI.

Appearing on CNN’s “Sanjay Gupta MD” in October, Michael Jacobson, executive director of the CSPI, conceded that sugar and soda consumption are, in fact, on the decline.

“But,” he said, “the scientific community has … reached a consensus that soft drinks are the one food or beverage that’s been demonstrated to cause weight gain and obesity. And if we’re going to deal with this obesity epidemic, that’s the place to start.”

The CSPI came out swinging in October, introducing “The Real Bears,” — “an animated short film that encourages Americans to pour out their sodas.” It stars “The Real Bears,” which resemble the iconic Coca-Cola polar bears.

The video was directed by Alex Bogusky, the man behind the anti-tobacco “Truth” campaign, and features an original song, “Sugar,” by Grammy award-winning artist Jason Mraz.

In response, Coca-Cola issued a statement that read: “This is irresponsible and the usual grandstanding from CSPI. It won’t help anyone understand energy balance, which is key according to recognized experts who’ve studied this issue — a group that doesn’t include CSPI. Enough said.”

In its new campaign, Coca-Cola drives home the sentiment that “beating obesity will take action by all of us, based on one simple, common-sense fact: All calories count, no matter where they come from. … And if you eat and drink more calories than you burn off, you’ll gain weight.”

The reason soda and other sugary drinks have found their way to the forefront of the so-called “war on sugar” is the harmful rate at which they are absorbed, said Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of California, San Francisco, as well as the author of the new book, “Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease.”

“The reason to eat your sugar as whole fruit and not juice (or soda) … is because the fiber helps reduce the rate of absorption from the gut into the bloodstream,” Lustig says. “When you juice it, it’s all going to you and your liver gets overwhelmed and you get sick.”

CSPI, in a statement Monday, said the new Coke ad campaign is “just a damage control exercise, and not a meaningful contribution toward addressing obesity.”

“What the industry is trying to do is forestall sensible policy approaches to reducing sugary drink consumption, including taxes, further exclusion from public facilities, and caps on serving sizes such as the measure proposed by Mayor (Michael) Bloomberg.”

On September 13, Bloomberg, the New York mayor, won health board approval of a proposal to ban the sale of sugary drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces in restaurants and other venues.

In an exclusive interview with Gupta after the board’s approval of the ban, Bloomberg stressed the importance of portion control.

“I can tell you — and I think I speak for almost everybody — if it’s in front of me, I eat it,” said Bloomberg. “I love Cheez-Its. If you put a 2-pound box of Cheez-Its in front of me, I’d probably eat them all. That’s not very good for you. But if you eat (almost) anything in moderation, there’s no harm.”

Jacobson told Gupta that the occasional soda could, of course, be a part of a healthy diet. “We don’t want to wipe out soft drinks,” he said. “But we would like to see soft drinks return to the dietary role they played in the ’50s, which was occasionally, and small portions, (as a) special treat. Now, people are guzzling huge containers of soda every day of their lives, practically.”

This is something even Coca-Cola can agree is a bad idea. The company is in the middle of a roll-out of smaller, portion-controlled sizes of its most popular drinks, and promises to have them in about 90% of the country by the end of the year.

“We’ve never been more committed to doing our part to help address the issue of obesity,” Coca-Cola spokesman Ben Scheidler said in an e-mail, adding that “2013 is going to be a landmark year in terms of expanding partnerships and efforts to educate consumers about energy balance.”

But perhaps most important is a move Coca-Cola has already made: the decision to add the calorie counts to the front of their bottles and cans, to make it even easier for consumers to make informed decisions.

5 FOODS THAT HELP YOU FIGHT THE FLU

You’ve stocked up on cold and flu medicine and have enough hand sanitizer and tissues to last for decades, but have you considered how your diet affects your health? Most people opt for orange juice and chicken noodle soup when they feel the sniffles coming on, but those aren’t the only foods that can help fend off disease. Vitamins A, C and E as well as other nutrients are important in boosting immunity and are found in a variety of foods like carrots, almonds and bell peppers.

The key to staying healthy, advises Eric Plasker, DC, author of The 100 Year Lifestyle, is to make healthy foods part of your daily life. “It’s important not to be crisis-motivated: Don’t wait until you’re sick and use foods as drugs,” Dr. Plasker says. “They need to be a regular part of your diet.” Sheana Brighton, RD, LDN, a clinical dietitian at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, Illinois, stresses including a variety of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet because they contain phytochemicals, which are thought to have health-protective qualities. She says, “They may have similar effects as antioxidants. They boost the immune system, provide anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial properties, and promote cell repair.”

Below, check out 10 flu-fighting foods that boost your immunity, help fight infection and more. Plus, we’ve also included tasty recipes that contain each of these super ingredients, so you can start battling the season’s worst colds tonight.

1. Red Bell Peppers

Savvy flu-fighters always increase vitamin C intake when they feel illness coming on, and with good reason: It not only helps fight off illness, but can decrease the severity and duration of symptoms. But chugging OJ isn’t your only option; tasty and versatile, red bell peppers contain twice as much immune-enhancing vitamin C as oranges and work in a variety of dishes. Try one of these recipes: Sausage and Pepper Pies or Chicken with Peppers & Cauliflower.

2. Carrots

Jennifer Zartarian, ND, Wellness and Research Coordinator at Long Island College Hospital in New York City, says yellow and orange veggies, like carrots, contain beta-carotene. This compound is converted to vitamin A in the body, which helps increase T-cells and boost immunity. Carrots are great in side dishes. Try one of these recipes: Roasted Ginger Carrots or Mashed Carrots & Rutabaga.

3. Almonds

This popular nut is a good source of vitamin E, which is a disease-fighting antioxidant. Grab a handful for your midafternoon snack or use them to flavor main dishes. Try one of these recipes: Wasabi Almond Catfish with Roasted Baby Squash or Paprika-Almond Chicken Breasts.

4. Sweet Potatoes

Like carrots, sweet potatoes are an orange-colored food that contains beta carotene, which is converted to vitamin A in the body and has been shown to help fight respiratory infections. Use sweet potatoes in soups, salads and side dishes. Try one of these recipes: Mexican Pork & Sweet Potato Stew or Ham and Sweet Potato Salad.

5. Chicken Soup

No surprise that this common cold remedy made our list, but do you know why moms having been ladling it out for years? Chicken soup does a body good because of the healthy veggies in the broth (like carrots). It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties, which may help decrease mucus production and throat swelling. But one of the main benefits of this winter staple may just be how it makes us feel. “It’s a comfort food that makes the soul feel good, and what’s good for the soul is good for the body,” says Dr. Plasker. “It also temporarily raises your body temperature, which can help you fight infection.” Try one of these recipes: Chicken Noodle Soup or Spring Vegetable & Chicken Stew.

MANNY PACQUAIO KNOCKED OUT BY MARQUEZ IN MARQUEZ-PACQUAIO IV

There was one second left in the sixth round of Saturday’s big fight in Vegas  between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao, one of the best boxers  in the world, had been picking apart his old nemesis Marquez with darty punches  that the Mexican, an expert counter-puncher, couldn’t seem to counter. The  Filipino fighter had connected on 94 punches to Marquez’s 52, had broken his  opponent’s nose and dropped him in the previous round. Marquez was bleeding  profusely and having trouble breathing. All three judges had Pacquiao winning  47-46 through five rounds.

Then in the dying moments of round six, the two men started exchanging  furious punches near the ropes. Marquez feinted left and threw one of the most  vicious short rights in recent boxing history, hitting Pacquiao flush in the  face and sending him to the canvas, right in front of Mitt and Ann  Romney’s ringside seats (“I couldn’t believe it, he went down right in front  of me!” Ann said later.) It seemed oddly appropriate: Romney knows all about  clear defeats emerging dramatically after close and tough battles. And Pacquiao  is a politician–a congressman with presidential ambitions in his native Philippines.

There was exaltation from Marquez, all sprinkled with blood, from his  cornermen and from the mostly pro-Marquez crowd at the MGM Grand. But the  obvious end of the match was also chilling because Pacquiao, seemingly  invincible once upon a time, was so slow to revive. His corner put a white wet  towel over him and started massaging his head as his weeping wife Jinkee–whose  name is tattooed on his arm–struggled into the ring and to his side. Eventually  regaining consciousness, Pacquiao said, “I got hit by a punch I didn’t see.” His  eyes were still glazed over.

It felt like the end of Manny Pacquaio. This is the second fight he has lost  this year. Despite his dominance of Marquez through most of the fight, he looked  just slightly more timid than the Pacquiao of old; his legs didn’t move along  with their typical bounce; he had been knocked down in round three, the first  time that had happened in years and an omen for the way the struggling Marquez  would finish the match. One of the smartest men in boxing, Marquez was setting  up his KO.

The punch that ended the fight would bring a resounding conclusion to one of  the bitterest rivalries in sports. Until Saturday, Marquez could claim to have  been cheated by history. Considered the sixth best pound-for-pound boxer in the  world, he fought Pacquiao to a controversial draw in 2004; he then lost a  split-decision (by one point) in their 2008 re-match. Marquez again lost to  Pacquiao in a 2011 controversy. At the conclusion of that fight, when the judges  ruled that Pacquiao had won, the Filipino was greeted by thunderous boos.  Marquez, disgusted, stormed out of the ring, believing he had won. He would  prove he deserved victory by knockout at the end of round six of their fourth  encounter–one of the most exciting in recent years, an instant classic.

It might not have happened. After their 2011 match, Pacquiao was moving onto  younger fighters and bigger paydays, and maybe—just maybe—an eventual superfight  with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

But earlier this year Pacquiao lost a controversial decision to Timothy  Bradley. While Pacquiao lost on the judges’ scorecards, the boxing public  believed he had soundly beaten Bradley—who was wheeled into the post-fight press  conference in a wheelchair. But since Mayweather and Pacquiao’s promoters never  seem able to negotiate their fight for various reasons–most nonsensical–Pacquiao  decided to take on Marquez again. And as the Filipino’s coach Freddie Roach  says, “He walked into a two-inch punch.” Pacquiao hadn’t been knocked out since  1999.

He might retire. He might fight Marquez for a fifth time. But what is clear:  that punch will permanently alter the way Pacquiao is viewed as a boxer,  politician and cross-cultural star.

As a fighter, he relied on his speed to create punching angles and then  quickly move out of range of his opponent.  But as he aged, he wasn’t quite  getting out of counter-attacks as much. In training camp, there was talk of  Pacquiao knocking out his sparring partners, but other, quieter stories of  missed training runs and a lack of dedication to his strength and fitness  regime.  To many who know him well, he seemed more interested in Bible  study than the sweet science. There were also uneasy questions from his own  countryman about his dedication to the Philippines’ fervent Catholicism, sensing  a turn toward evangelical “born again” Protestantism. Indeed, there were some  snarky tweets that his defeat may have been the result of not performing what  had seemed to be a pre-fight ritual: kneeling in a corner and making the  Catholic sign of the cross. Pacquiao seems to be writing a different—more  complex—storyline to his life, and it hasn’t been easy to digest by his  countrymen. And the latest loss may shake the faith of his many non-Filipino  fans who have made him a global brand–but one based on winning and  invincibility.

After the fight, Pacquiao readily confessed to over-confidence, believing the  bloodied Marquez to be on his last legs. However, Roach, himself an icon of  perseverance because of his public struggle with Parkinson’s, said that, though  Pacquiao looked careless at times, the end is not nigh. “If I see signs of him  declining, I will tell him to retire. I don’t think this is the end of Manny  Pacquiao, no.” It was simply a mistake. He did not see the punch coming. That  says a lot for Pacquiao’s vision. In Marquez’s view, he had it coming.

SERGIO MARTINEZ BEATS CHAVEZ AFTER ESCAPING A WILD 12TH ROUND

After a year of trying to get Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to fight him, Sergio Martinez finally got his wish. And he certainly took advantage of the opportunity.

Martinez justified his reputation as one of the top-three pound-for-pound fighters in the world in the eyes of many, as he defeated Chavez and claimed the WBC middleweight belt Saturday night.

Martinez dominated the early and middle parts of the fight, but that didn’t stop both fighters from a furious finish. Chavez started gaining momentum in the 11th round, and he even scored a knockdown in the 12th.

However, Martinez was saved by the bell. He won via unanimous decision, winning the coveted middleweight belt.

It was an exciting fight, and the finish was one of the best in recent memory. Both fighters put forth a tremendous effort, but Chavez couldn’t get the knockout he needed at the end.

Martinez had everything to lose in this fight. Had he not been able to secure the middleweight title, it’s possible the 37-year-old would have slowly faded into boxing irrelevance as the sport looked toward younger contenders to challenge Chavez.

It’s what makes this win so impressive. He wasn’t just fighting Chavez; he was fighting off the inevitability of eventually sacrificing his place among boxing’s elite as well. To a certain extent, his reputation was on the line.

For Chavez, this is certainly a setback, but likely just a temporary one. He’s still a big draw. He’s still considered one of the elite middleweights around. He’ll be back.

Still, you can’t help but wonder if this will only embolden those fans that whisper that Chavez is overrated, that he is only such a huge draw because he is the son of the greatest Mexican fighter of all time.

On this night, the Chavez name couldn’t save him. And for one more fight, Martinez quieted the talk that he was slowing down and his time among the elite was drawing to a close.

Martinez has the belt he probably deserved to hold much sooner. He won’t go gently into the night, at least not yet.

MARLEN ESPARZA: FIRST AMERICAN FEMALE BOXER TO WIN OLYMPIC BOXING MATCH

Marlen Esparza’s CoverGirl smile lit up the room as she posed for pictures with family and friends and embraced her newest confidante, BALCO founder Victor Conte.

Esparza, a 110-pound boxer, was savoring every moment of what was a historic day for the once-mighty U.S. boxing team, which is now a mess. Esparza, though, became the first woman in U.S. boxing history to win an Olympic match and now is assured of winning a medal.

“I feel really good about it, but in the U.S. if it’s not a gold it’s not good enough,” Esparza said. “I’ll be happy whatever I get from this point. In my mind I am really dying for a gold medal.”

To advance to the gold-medal match, Esparza will have to defeat three-time world champion Cancan Ren of China. At the very least Esparza will take home bronze in the year women’s boxing made its Olympic debut.

The 23-year-old, who was national Golden Gloves champion at 17, will retire after the Olympics and pursue an education. Esparza was a high school valedictorian in her hometown of Houston and has capitalized on her achievements in the ring and her wholesome looks to score endorsement deals with Nike, Coca-Cola and CoverGirl.

“Marlen is a very gifted individual athlete,” Conte told the Daily News after Esparza defeated Venezuela’s Karlha Magliocco, 24-16, in the quarterfinals. “She has the ‘it’ factor. The first time I met her I was very impressed with her attitude. She has the D-W-I-T… do whatever it takes. No matter what it takes she believes in herself.”

MARLEN7S_2_WEB

Esparza began working with Conte in January and credits him with improving her training and fitness. Their relationship is unsettling to the IOC because of Conte’s notorious past with former Olympic champions.

Conte’s most famous Olympic client was Marion Jones, who won five gold medals in Sydney but had them all stripped by the IOC after Jones pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators and admitted that she had taken the undetectable designer steroid “the clear” from September 2000 to July 2001.

Conte is back at the Olympics for the first time since pleading guilty seven years ago to one count of conspiracy to distribute steroids and one count of laundering a portion of a check and spending four months in a federal prison. Since the BALCO scandal, Conte has been an outspoken advocate for more effective testing. And Esparza is two wins from giving Conte another Olympic champion.

“It’s a really enjoyable experience,” Conte told The News.

Esparza admitted being nervous entering the ring at ExCel Arena in East London because she had never fought in front of 10,000 people.

“I thought it would freak me out more than it did,” said Esparza, who proved to be the quicker and smarter fighter, counter-punching her way to the semifinals.

CHRIS BROWN AND DRAKE OFFERED 1 MILLION DOLLARS BY PROMOTER TO FIGHT EACH OTHER

A celebrity boxing promoter is hoping to capitalize on the alleged nightclub brawl between singer Chris Brown and rapper Drake by offering them $1 million each to take their beef to the ring.

The promoter, Damon Feldman, also says he is asking singer Rihanna to be a ring girl at the bout, but acknowledged she’ll likely pass.

Feldman says he has the financial backing of businessman Alki David and that he’ll donate $1 million to a charity that helps abused women if the fight takes place.

The fight, he said, would feature three minute-long rounds with the participants donning oversized gloves and protective head gear.

Feldman is no stranger to publicity. He has put on fights featuring ex-baseball outfielder Jose Canseco, Lindsay Lohan’s dad Michael and Rodney King.

Feldman says he has not received a response from either Drake or Brown.

And while Drake tweeted about his dry cleaning, and Brown about a helpful stewardess, neither made mention of the offer on their Twitter pages.

Meanwhile, police continue their investigation into the bottle-throwing melee allegedly between Drake and Brown and their entourages that took place at the New York City club W.i.P on June 14.

Brown was partying with friends in the VIP section of the South Village club, while the Drake and his friends were nearby, according to statements from reps for both artists.

Brown has said he was a victim in the incident, and Drake’s representatives have said he “did not engage in any activity which resulted in injury.”

The squabble left Brown with a nasty gash on his chin and fueled Internet rumors that it started because of an argument about Rihanna, the sizzling songstress that both men have dated.

CHRIS BROWN SUFFERS BRUTAL ATTACK FROM DRAKE’S CAMP

A rep reports said that Chris Brown was brutally attacked at a nightclub. Chris Brown posted a picture of his injuries from the attack.

Shortly after Drake broke his silence about the Big Apple brawl between his camp and Chris Brown’s, insisting he was on his way out of the NYC nightclub at the time of the incident, Brown released a statement also proclaiming his innocence in the matter.Chris Brown suffered a nasty cut on his chin during what his rep called a “brutal attack” at the club.

Brown, his model girlfriend Karrueche Tran and other friends “sustained several injuries,” Brown rep Jeff Raymond said. “Chris and his party are cooperating with New York authorities who are pursuing this incident further.”

A New York Police spokesman confirmed the department was investigating the incident.

Brown did not name names, but he did post a photo of his injury — which appeared to be a half-inch gash on the left corner of his chin — on his Instagram account.

What happened in the VIP section of the South Village club W.i.P. is unclear.

While Drake was there, his rep denied online reports that it was a clash between members of his entourage and Brown’s crew.

Rihanna on Chris Brown: I’m going to do what I want

“Drake did not participate in any wrongdoing of any kind last night at W.i.P.,” his rep said in a statement to CNN. “He was on his way out of the club when the altercation began. He did not engage in any activity which resulted in injury to person or damage to property.”

Meek Mill, another rapper named in the online reports, also distanced himself from the brawl. While Mill’s rep declined comment to CNN, the artist tweeted “It wasn’t me.”

Brown, in a tweet of his own Thursday afternoon, appeared to support Meek Mill’s claim.

“Me and @MeekMill ain’t on that bulls**t. Real respect Real….”

Brown is on probation for another two years, until 2014, the result of his guilty plea to assaulting Rihanna on the eve of the 2009 Grammy Awards.

MANNY PACQUAIO GETS ROBBED IN A SPLIT DECISION AGAINST TIMOTHY BRADLEY

I’ve seen a lot of things in boxing, but last night’s fight between Manny Pacquaio and Timothy Bradley was by far the one of the greatest robberies of all time. I have attached a copy of the scorecard to this post. How could they do this? This is why MMA is kicking boxing’s ass. Check out the scorecard below…

After 12 rounds of Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley, it seemed as though everyone in the world had witnessed Pacquiao’s 55th victory.

Then, the three judges at ringside got their say:

  • Judge Jerry Roth:  Pacquiao 115-113 Bradley
  • Judge C.J. Ross: Pacquiao 113-115 Bradley
  • Judge Duane Ford: Pacquiao 113-115 Bradley

In one of the most shocking upsets in boxing history, Bradley defeated Pacquiao by split decision to take the WBO welterweight title.

Official Pacquiao-Bradley Scorecards

This should be the greatest night of Bradley’s life. A night where fans applaud his gutsy performance, against one of boxing’s greatest fighters of all time.

Instead, his career-defining moment will forever be tarnished by controversy.

How could judges give rounds to Bradley where he was out-punched and out-worked? How can so many people see a fight one way and have those who ultimately matter see it completely the opposite?

Unfortunately, this is nothing new. Welcome to the sport of boxing.

The sport has lost credibility with fans largely due to contentious decisions. Fights are subjective, where one “qualified” official decides who controls the action and based on a historical point system who is declared the winner.

But, it seems, each judge has his or her own interpretation of what a winning fighter looks like. What is effective aggression? How does someone show ring generalship? One judge seeing a fighter “running” is another judge’s “defensive counter puncher.”

We know boxing isn’t perfect; the judging system will probably always be flawed. But, decisions like Pacquiao-Bradley are unacceptable.

So, where does this leave these two fighters?

Both men fight under the Top Rank umbrella. With Bob Arum promoting the two boxers, negotiations should be quick and painless. The rematch should take place in November.

Hopefully, we get a boxing classic. A rematch for the ages.  It’s the least the fight can do to make up for what their first encounter produced…

A black eye to the entire sport.

MANNY PACQUAIO IS BORN AGAIN. WILL HE STILL BE RUTHLESS IN THE RING?

HOLLYWOOD — I came to ask a different kind of question, because virtually every other one about Manny Pacquiao has been answered.

Since Pacquiao rose to prominence — most point to his 2008 win over Oscar De La Hoya as the fight that elevated the Filipino puncher to superstar status — he has been covered backward and forward, by blogs and newspapers, magazines and television shows. We know about his days as a stringy 98-pounder who put rocks in his pockets just to make the 105-pound minimum. We know about his partnership with Freddie Roach, who molded a raw bundle of power into a polished champion. We know about his political ambitions, which include a stop in the Filipino Congress and possibly a run for Governor of his province next year.

We know it all. When you are making $25-plus million per fight and routinely registering over 1 million pay-per-view buys, you get more complete coverage than a presidential candidate does.

But there is a new twist to Pacquiao. He has undergone a religious awakening these last eight months, morphing from, as he described himself to me, “an immoral man” into a deeply religious one. He has gone from a man who indulged in heavy drinking, gambling and womanizing to a committed one who has eliminated every vice from his life.

Good for him, I thought to myself a couple of weeks ago. I won’t delve too deep into Pacquiao’s personal issues here — pick up this week’s Sports Illustrated for more on that — but it was clear his life had spun out of control. Too many athletes have been sucked in by the trappings of celebrity only to find themselves broke and alone later in life, and by cleaning up his act, by trading the bottle for Bible study, Pacquiao may have avoided a similar fate.

But a question lingered: With a showdown with unbeaten Timothy Bradley on Saturday, (9 p.m. ET, HBO PPV) would a kinder, gentler Pacquiao be the same killer in the ring?

The short answer: Yes.

Sitting with Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, at the front desk of his Wild Card gym last week — a desk Roach still sits at every day and collects $5 fees from anyone interested in using the facility — I learned that Roach had the same question. I learned that when Roach initially heard of Pacquiao’s transformation, when he started hearing Pacquiao whisper about not wanting to hurt people, when he started seeing his fighter order his entourage to memorize Bible verses, he thought Pacquiao should quit. Boxing is a violent sport, Roach reasoned, and if you don’t have a taste for violence anymore, you should get out.

But what Roach has seen from Pacquiao this camp has surprised him. The religious transformation hasn’t hurt Pacquiao’s boxing; if anything, it has improved it. Roach says Pacquiao is a fresher fighter when he comes to the gym. Freed from the mental toll taken by a strained marriage, he is more focused.

“His focus is very good,” Roach said. “We don’t have days where he comes in tired, because he has no nightlife whatsoever, besides the Bible study. He is very focused on the fight. He and God are very close right now and he is just a better athlete, with no distractions.”

Said his promoter, Bob Arum, “From somebody who has visited the training camp a few times, the difference in Manny’s face is so apparent. He’s not as tired as he was and he’s not as worn as he was. There is a glow in his face. I think this religious awakening has been all good on his part. I am a little prejudiced because I am religious myself but I believe when young athletes find religion it will greatly enhance their careers.”

But what about the violence of boxing? How can someone so committed to the Bible reconcile its teachings with a sport where you are trying to inflict as much damage as possible?

“I look at boxing as a sport,” said Pacquiao’s pastor, Jeric Soriano. “It’s his platform. It has made him who he is. I tell him, ‘Be the most excellent you can be.’ Just as long as he is following the rules, go for it. As far as hurting people, that’s the sport. You’re allowed to punch each other out. We don’t hurt people outside the ring. We help people. We don’t cut people down or speak ugly of them. But in the ring, what he is doing is fine.”

There is one thing that concerns Roach, and it has nothing to do with Pacquiao’s religion. In recent fights, Pacquiao has experienced leg cramps that have hindered his mobility. After the last fight, with Juan Manuel Marquez, Roach suggested Pacquiao see doctors at UCLA to determine what was causing the problem. Pacquiao chose to go a different route.

“I went to his people and said, ‘Let’s take him to a real doctor,’” Roach said. “They told me they had it covered. I still don’t know what they did. The problem is he never haves the cramps during training. It’s only during a fight. Maybe it’s mental, maybe it’s something else. But I would have addressed the issue differently than how he did it.”

Roach admits Pacquiao has slowed some. To keep him fresh he has cut his sparring rounds and replaced Pacquiao’s longtime sparring partners with new ones because the relationships had become too friendly. “We’ve got two Russians now,” Roach said. “And they don’t speak English.”

Roach calls Bradley a good fighter but doesn’t think he is in Pacquiao’s league. “I have been watching Bradley a lot and he doesn’t rely very much on counterpunching,” Roach said. “He is very offensive. He comes to fight, which will make it a good fight for everybody. We have the game plan set after watching many, many tapes of Bradley. Manny should have a very good fight on Saturday.”

NICKI MINAJ AND FUNKMASTER FLEX FIGHT OVER SUMMER JAM FIASCO

Summer Jam 2012 has come and gone, but the drama surrounding Nicki Minaj and YMCMB’s canceled performance at the annual concert is still the talk of the town. On Monday night (June 4) Minaj decided to put an end to the hearsay by calling into Funkmaster Flex’s show on New York City’s Hot 97 radio station, where they hashed out their beef publicly. Would it have been too much to ask for some input from the actual offender, Peter Rosenberg?

During their heated discussion, which opened with Flex admitting that they’d already been arguing for an hour, Nicki Minaj was adamant in insisting that Rosenberg chose the wrong time and place to voice his negative opinions. “It’s not about his opinion, because I have opinions about DJs on Hot 97 and I have opinions on Hot 97,” she said. “But when it’s about us uniting people [for] your show, I wouldn’t dare come on your stage and say something negative about Hot 97, leading up to that concert.”

“My fans at Summer Jam didn’t appreciate his comments, nor did my fans who were watching the livestream appreciate his comments,” she added. “This is streaming to the world. Nicki Minaj opened up that stream to show to kids in London and Paris, it was hosted on my website and those requests came from your station, I posted the links.”

Flex countered that Nicki was overreacting when she listened to Lil Wayne and pulled out of the show and he accused her of riling up fans on Twitter before dealing with the issue internally, but she wasn’t having any of it, maintaining that what Weezy says goes.

“I don’t go against the president of my label. Before I had New York radio, I had Wayne,” she said, emphatically. “I will never go against Wayne. I can’t believe after all these years he’s still teaching me. After a man goes on stage and disrespects me and tries to rile people up, I still was going on that stage and shame on me. Lil Wayne gave me a valuable lesson in self worth. He tweeted before he called me, and when I spoke to him he said, ‘Nick, we ain’t doing that show.”

Minaj explained that the attack felt extra vindictive since she was the only woman on the roster (note: but not because she was the only woman on the roster), and plenty of yelling and screaming ensued (usually punctuated by Minaj repeating Flex’s name slowly, in an effort to calm him down).

One final issue that she needed to address was Flex’s earlier rant, in which he made questionable remarks about her music sales. “When you give stats to the world, people listen to you, and it’s important that people know Nicki Minaj is actually out here selling records, singles and making money for Universal,” she said, rattling off the sales she’s banked with Pink Friday and Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, topping it off with my favorite line, “I Get Money.”

It’d be a lie to say that things ended on a completely rosy note, but it seems like Minaj might’ve had the upper hand here. Flex admitted that Rosenberg could’ve picked a better time to criticize Minaj and she still stuck by Wayne’s decision to pull her out of the show. (“This is my hometown, I wanted to come on stage for my fans, my barbz, my babies.”)

When Flex made one last joking attempt to get an apology out of her, you can probably guess the tone of her response: “Excuse Me?” No radio station that allowed someone to disrespect me is getting an apology.”

KEVIN COSTNER AND STEPHEN BALDWIN GET READY TO FIGHT

When I first saw the caption that mentioned a fight between hollywood heavyweight Kevin Kostner, and Stephen Baldwin, I thought that they were going to engage in a fist fight. Why, I wondered, but I quickly found out that Stephen Balswin claims that he got hustled. It’s about to get serious.

(CNN) — Lawyers for Kevin Costner and Stephen Baldwin began choosing jurors Monday to decide a legal dispute between the two actors stemming from the 2010 Gulf oil spill.

Baldwin and a New Orleans businessman say Costner and others tricked them into selling their stock in a company that made oil spill cleanup machines the same week BP placed a $52 million order for the technology.

The judge has ordered both actors to attend each day of the trial, which is being heard in a federal court in New Orleans.

The oil separation technology was developed in the 1990s by a company created by Costner, but Baldwin became involved while in New Orleans to produce a documentary about the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico in May 2010.

Baldwin and Spyridon Contogouris decided to sell their stock soon after getting it because of differences with other shareholders, according to the lawsuit. They signed an agreement to sell their shares to Patrick Smith, who then transferred them to a company partly owned by Costner, on June 11, 2010.

BP announced on June 15, 2010, it would lease 32 machines from the company.

If Smith and Costner had told them BP was placing a huge order, they would not have sold, the suit said. The 10% of the company that Baldwin sold for $500,000 should have been worth $3.8 million, while the 28% stake sold by Contogouris for $1.4 million was worth $10.6 million, the suit said.

Lawyers for Costner and Smith contend Baldwin and Contogouris sold their stock “with eyes wide open, to get out of a soured business relationship and to invest in other ventures.”

They knew that BP might place the order, a defense filing said. It was widely reported in the news and Costner testified about it to Congress two days before the stock sale.

Contrary to trying to trick Baldwin into selling his shares, Costner was “dumbfounded,” “flabbergasted” and “furious” when he learned Baldwin and Contogouris had sold out “because it enabled plaintiffs to cash out their interests” before the company had earned any money, the defense filing said.

Costner and Baldwin are both on the list of witnesses expected to testify.

JUSTIN BIEBER ACCOMPANIES MAYWEATHER TO VICTORY OVER COTTO

Floyd Mayweather is the ultimate businessman. He had not just 50 Cent accompany him to the ring, but he also had Justin Bieber with him on the way to the ring. The move is so genius because tomorrow, all the Justin Bieber fans who usually would not watch Floyd Mayweather fighting would google Floyd. They will all watch his videosof Floyd Mayweather. They would look at images of Floyd Mayweather. They will then get to know him. They would say “Who is this Floyd Mayweather character, who is our star, justin Bieber”. Advantage Floyd. WINNING!!!!!

It was so interesting to watch Justin walking to the ring with Floyd. He was so scared. He looked like he was going to throw up. Time froze for a second as this thought entered my head. Floyd Mayweather walks clamly through a situation that would terrify many men. The walk to the ring would make many men vomit. The energy was intense. Many men were scared.

Floyd Mayweather is a much larger draw than Manny Pacquiao. I don’t think that he should split the purse 50-50.

Floyd Mayweather is guaranteed $32 million for this fight with Miguel Cotto. Cotto came to fight. He bloddied up Floyd, but Floyd maintained his composure and won.

Exciting Fight!!!

MY FIGHT MATTERS, DOES YOURS?

Nobody is perfect. I strive to get there someday. I know that if I strive for perfection, I’ll get very close to greatness. I’ve learned that by putting one foot in front of the other and working hard consistently, I’ll be able to make my dreams come true.

Everyday, I fight to become a better person, leave my mark on this world, and leave this world better than I found it. What are you fighting for?

In everyday life, true fights materialize.

No championship belts, no grand prize – just the reason you rise and strive to overcome.

It’s not about what battles you’ve won – it’s what you stand for.

It’s sacrificing your comfort and carrying on for a cause, it’s for self-satisfaction and not the applause, it’s tearing down walls.

It’s what you exercise your might for, we all should have something to fight for.

And my fight matters – does yours?
