HOTEL GYM AND HOME WORKOUT: THE JET SETTER GUIDE TO FITNESS

If you’re a businessman or woman, on the go or a frequent vacationer, there’s a good  chance that at some point you’re going to end up away from your gym and on the  hunt for a place to work out. While many assume that every hotel comes equipped  with a gym, this is often not the case. Even some pricey boutique hotels do not  include an exercise room, so it’s important to have a workout backup plan.

This is where hotel workouts come into play: you can use items found in your hotel room as props to help you work out and maintain your  physique while out of town. The key to an effective hotel workout is finding  creative ways to challenge the muscles, all while using your own body weight or  props. For the cardioportion of your hotel workout, options include  stepping up and down on a chair or bench, running stairs located in the hotel,  skipping (outside if you’re not on the bottom floor), or simply going for a  run. For strength training, you’re going to need to put a spin on  traditional exercises to create your hotel workout. Here are some  useful ways to get an effective hotel workout.

Props

To complete your hotel workout, you can use the following  props:

  • 2 2-liter bottles of water obtained at a nearby grocery or convenience  store
  • 2 chairs found in your room

The objective of your hotel  workout is to move through the following exercises as quickly as possible.

Body weight squats with wall squats

Start your hotel workout by holding  one of the water bottles directly out in front of you with your feet  shoulder-width apart. Begin to squat down, keeping your toes pointed  forward and going as low as possible. Complete a total of 30-50 reps, depending  on your fitness level. Then, stand with your back against a wall and  move down into the squat position so that your knees are at a 90-degree  angle. Hold this position for 20-30 seconds.

Push-up sequence

To add more difficulty to regular push-ups, place your  feet on top of the bed while keeping your hands on the floor. Your body should  be on a flat decline. From there, perform push-ups as usual.   Once you’re finished doing 15-20 reps, turn your body while lifting one hand off  the floor so that you are sideways with one arm fully supporting your body.  Maintain this position for 20 seconds. After you’re finished, repeat  the push-ups, only this time place your hands in a triangular position.   Repeat once more on the other side, holding the sideways position to complete  this sequence.

DOUBLE STANDARD: WOMEN MUST WORK HARDER TO LOSE WEIGHT

On The Biggest Loser, more than 60% of the winners have been men. Outside of the show, I’ve heard a lot of women complain that even when they aren’t really “trying,” men seem to have an easier time losing weight. Why?

The answer lies in body composition. Even when obese, men tend to have more muscle mass than women. Women carry approximately 10% more of their bodyweight in fat. Furthermore, several studies have shown that a man’s metabolism is anywhere from 3 to 10% higher than a woman of the same weight and age. That brings us to aphysiological truth: the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism will be and the more calories you will burn, even when resting.

The type of extra weight you’re carrying matters, too. Men tend to have more visceral fat, the kind that accumulates deep in the body, mostly around the organs in their mid-sections. It may not jiggle around, but it can give a guy some added girth or a big gut. Women have more subcutaneous fat, which sits just under the skin (most often in your hips and thighs). This type of fat tends to jiggle and move, and you might even (unhappily) be able to grab hold of it.

While visceral fat is the more dangerous of the two and has been linked to a long list of health issues, a 2009 study at Cairo University showed that it gets metabolized faster than subcutaneous fat. This means that subcutaneous fat is harder to lose, which is just another hurdle for women who are looking to lose weight.

And then there’s the harder-to-pin-down issue of “emotional eating,” and a woman’s greater propensity for it. I can vouch for this from what I’ve seen on The Biggest Loser. On the show, most of the male contestants have become obese because of their off-the-charts portion sizes (and terrifically bad food choices on those big plates,) while the women have found themselves in trouble because they steadily snack or binge to cope with stress, sadness or exhaustion. Could it be that women find it more difficult to curb their cravings and exhibit self-control than men? Perhaps, especially when it comes to food. According to a 2008 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, men are better able to handle self-control over food cravings than women.

With all these factors working against them, it seems that women are at a weight-loss disadvantage, but body composition isn’t destiny — it’s just a minor roadblock. Women need to think smartly about how to make their bodies work for them, for example, by taking advantage of the connection between muscle mass and metabolism, or making note of the triggers for emotional eating and reversing them. These changes — while not always easy — can make a real impact on weight loss over the short- and long-term and help make the gender gap disappear.

WHAT ARE BATH SALTS? THE ZOMBIE BODY EATERS APOCALYPSE?

“Ivory Wave,” “Purple Wave,” Vanilla Sky,” and “Bliss” — all are among the many street names of a so-called designer drug known as “bath salts,” which has sparked thousands of calls to poison centers across the U.S. over the last year.

Citing an “imminent threat to public safety,” the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) made illegal the possession and sale of three of the chemicals commonly used to make bath salts — the synthetic stimulants mephedrone, MDPV, and methylone. The ban, issued in October 2011, is effective for at least a year. During that time, the agency will decide whether a permanent ban is warranted.

WebMD talked about bath salts and other designer drugs with Zane Horowitz, MD, an emergency room physician and medical director of the Oregon Poison Center.

First of all, what are bath salts?

“The presumption is that most bath salts are MDPV, or methylenedioxypyrovalerone, although newer pyrovalerone derivatives are being made by illegal street chemists. Nobody really knows, because there is no way to test for these substances,” Horowitz says.

Why are they called bath salts?

“It’s confusing. Is this what we put in our bathtubs, like Epsom salts? No. But by marketing them as bath salts and labeling them ‘not for human consumption,’ they have been able to avoid them being specifically enumerated as illegal,” Horowitz says.

What do you experience when you take bath salts?

“Agitation, paranoia, hallucinations, chest pain, suicidality. It’s a very scary stimulant that is out there. We get high blood pressure and increased pulse, but there’s something more, something different that’s causing these other extreme effects. But right now, there’s no test to pick up this drug. The only way we know if someone has taken them is if they tell you they have.

The clinical presentation is similar to mephedrone [a chemical found in other designer drugs], with agitation, psychosis, and stimulatory effects. Both of these agents should be of concern, as severe agitated behavior, like an amphetamine overdose, has occurred.

A second concern is the ongoing suicidality in these patients, even after the stimulatory effects of the drugs have worn off. At least for MDPV, there have been a few highly publicized suicides a few days after their use,” Horowitz says.

Are bath salts illegal?

“You can find them in mini-marts and smoke shops sold as Ivory Wave, Bolivian Bath, and other names,” Horowitz says. “The people who make these things have skirted the laws that make these types of things illegal. While several states have banned the sale of bath salts, ultimately it will have to be a federal law that labels these as a schedule 1 drug, which means it has no medicinal value but a high potential for abuse, and declare them illegal.”

Are bath salts addictive? How are they taken?

“We don’t know if they are addictive. We have not had enough long-term experience with it. Acute toxicity is the main problem. But many stimulants do cause a craving. The people who take them are very creative. They snort it, shoot it, mix it with food and drink,” Horowitz says.

In October 2011, the DEA used its authority to place several of the chemicals used to produce bath salts under their control, and it’s likely that they will permanently illegalize the possession and sale of these chemicals and products that contain them. What impact will that have?

“Pretty much all of these chemicals will end up permanently banned,” Horowitz says. “But it’s easy to say, ‘We’ve banned them.’ It’s something else to police them and make them go away. Cocaine, heroin, [and] marijuana are illegal, but they are all still out there. Designer drugs like bath salts never really go away. How people make them and how they sell them are the only things that change. People will abuse them until there’s a crisis that brings attention to them, then they will disappear and a new drug will come along to fill the void.”

Bath salts are the latest example of designer drugs. Where do you see this trend going?

“That’s right. They are part of a long line of other pills and substances that we call designer drugs. And drug makers will keep creating new combinations at home and in illicit labs,” Horowitz says. “It’s almost impossible to keep up. And the motivation for buying them is always the same: Drugs like these are new and below the radar, unlike named illegal drugs.”

KARMA IS A BEAR: BEAR BREAKS INTO A CAR AND EATS A CONVICTED KILLER

Karma is a bear!!!

A bear ate the corpse of a convicted killer in a wooded area of Canada, according to authorities.

The mauled body of Rory Nelson Wagner, 53, was found in a rural area in southern British Columbia on Wednesday evening, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.

Police believe Wagner was already dead in a 1986 Volkswagen Jetta when the black bear broke into the vehicle, ate some parts of him and dragged the rest of the body away.

“The driver’s window of the vehicle was down and investigators noted numerous muddy animal prints and scratches on the car,” police said.

Officials “discovered the body in the surrounding bush, about 120 meters from the vehicle,” police said.

Drug paraphernalia and a bottle of liquor was found in the car. A coroner is conducting an autopsy and toxicology tests.

Wagner and two other people were charged with the 1993 killing of a man they thought had sexually assaulted a relative, CNN affiliate CTV reported. The man they killed was found not guilty of sexual assault charges, according to the affiliate.

Wagner was convicted for the murder, but he had been on parole.

Conservation officials say the bear was caught, but may be killed to ensure public safety.

YOU WANT IT, YOU GOT IT…FIRST OF MANY VIDEOS IS HERE!!!

I was up again late last night editing this video that I have attached to this post. I edited it on Windows Movie Maker. It’s amazing what great videos can be created using this simple program that comes with every PC. I use it to edit all my videos. The best thing about it is that it is free!! I bought a new FlipHD camera to shoot the videos. It’s crazy what this little camera can do. It shoots full HD.

Last week, a friend of mine, Jay Wright, the Owner of The Wright Fit asked me to come over to his office and test out the new Woodway Curve treadmill. The CURVE  treadmill burns up to 30% more calories than conventional motorized treadmills  because the user is actually powering the running surface, thus engaging more  muscle groups and achieving a superior workout. Research studies have proven  that users are able to reach similar cardiovascular exercise levels and caloric  burn walking on the CURVE treadmill in comparison to running on conventional  motorized units. IT DOES NOT REQUIRE A POWER SOURCE. Talk about going green!

I worked up a ridiculous sweat within the first few minutes of running on the treadmill. I ran on it for 20 minutes and felt as though I had run for 30 minutes. I was drenched. My heart rate was up for several minutes after I stopped running which shows that the upward curvature of the machine, which forces you run up hill, builds muscle.

Look at my shirt at the end of my run. It was hard to talk at the end of the run.
