A MIDNIGHT WINTER’S RUN: HOW TO GET LEAN FOR A PHOTO SHOOT OR EVENT

Black male model Ngo Okafor 2013

I have a video and photo shoot today for a new exercise product, which will hit the market soon. We are negotiating terms for me to become the face of the product on TV and other media. I’ve been preparing for the shoot for a few days. I’ve stepped up my ab and cardio regimens for the past few days in order to guarantee that I’m at my leanest at the time of the shoot. I have also cut back on my carbohydrate intake. I feel ready. I will post pictures from the shoot once I get to the set. Stay tuned.

Many male and female models do severe water restriction in order to achieve maximum leanness. Many even take ‘water pills’ or diuretics. I don’t like severe water restriction , because being extremely dehydrated causes me to cramp up. I have never used ‘water pills’ or diuretics either. I choose to train harder. This is why I went out for a 4 mile run last night, a little after midnight.

Weight loss is a highly controversial use of water pills. Water is heavy and can contribute to a puffy or overweight appearance, so removing excess water is one way to shed pounds and look a little trimmer. Celebrities often use techniques to shed water weight before photo shoots and other events for this reason.

Using diuretics in this way is problematic for multiple reasons. They can create electrolyte imbalances because of how they affect sodium and potassium levels, which can cause problems such as muscle cramps and irregular heartbeat. Problems such as dizziness and fainting can happen if dehydration and a drop in blood pressure are too extreme. Lastly, the body naturally will try to replenish its supply of water once diuretic use ends, so weight loss under this method is not sustainable.

Psychologists and psychiatrists are especially concerned about the use of both water pills and laxatives in cases of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Even though these medications are not meant to be taken for an extremely long time even in cases of medical necessity, individuals suffering from these conditions use them over extended periods to keep weight as low as possible. Stopping the use often means working through intense mental and behavioral issues such as distorted body image.

Stay safe and continue to work hard!!

THE DOG ATE MY HOMEWORK: MOST UNUSUAL EXCUSES FOR BEING LATE TO WORK

Ngo Okafor photo shoot at Peak Performance

Early on in my career as a model and actor, I had a reputation for being late. Part of it was cultural (in African culture, extreme lateness is accepted), but most of it was just poor time management. I’m never late now though!!!! Getting ready for work may take a few minutes for some or a few hours for others. No matter how long it takes you to head out the door, there may be some days when it seems as though the clock’s against you. According to a new CareerBuilder study, 26 percent of workers admit to being tardy at least once a month, and 16 percent are late once a week or more.

“Employers understand that every now and again circumstances will arise that are out of a worker’s control and, unfortunately, cause a late arrival to work,” says Rosemary Haefner, vice president of human resources at CareerBuilder. “It escalates to a problem when the behavior becomes repetitive, causing employers to take disciplinary action. More than one-third of hiring managers reported they had to fire someone for being late.”

Excuses, excuses
Hiring managers shared some of the most memorable excuses they’ve heard from employees who were late getting to the office. While 31 percent of workers pointed to traffic as the most common cause for tardiness, some answers were more memorable than a bad commute:

    • Employee dropped her purse into a coin-operated newspaper box and couldn’t retrieve it without change — which was in the purse.

    • Employee accidentally left the apartment with his roommate’s girlfriend’s shoes on and had to go back to change.

    • Employee’s angry wife had frozen his truck keys in a glass of water in the freezer.

    • Employee got a late start because she was putting a raincoat on her concrete duck in her front yard, because rain was expected later that day.

    • Employee’s car wouldn’t start because the device measuring blood-alcohol level showed he was intoxicated.

    • Employee attempted to cut his own hair before work and the clippers stopped working, so he had to wait until the barber shop opened to fix his hair.

    • Employee’s car was attacked by a bear. (Employee had photographic evidence.)

    • Employee drove to her previous employer by mistake.

    • Employee claimed to have delivered a stranger’s baby on the side of the highway.

Avoiding a late arrival

The key to being punctual and avoiding your employer’s frustration is to understand your schedule and be prepared. If you have free time in the evening, take advantage of the extra minutes and prepare your meals, clothes and bag or briefcase then. Likewise, if you need daylight to get moving, set the alarm for an earlier wake-up time to avoid rushing and running late. Also check how the weather may affect your commute, and leave ample time to get to the office. These small steps can get you to work on time and save you from trying to come up with a believable story.

HOW TO GET SEXY MALE MODEL ABS

Ngo okafor Black male model abs

If you treat your abs like an after thought, they will look like an after thought.

Good morning all!! It’s Sunday morning, which means that another week has come to an end and another week is set begin in a few hours. Sunday is a great day to reflect on the week past and plan/get ready for the new week. My Sundays are usually spent researching ideas and articles on varying subject matters and then write about them. Today I’m going to write about how to get sexy male model abs. I don’t have to research this topic because I live it….everyday.

Abs are the key to being successful as a model. It is especially important for someone who has a desire to become a fitness model. Abs are the ultimate measure of fitness. Ripped abs shows that you have put in the work in the gym and you have discipline to eat healthy in order to get lean. In order words, it means that you are in beast mode!!

When you walk to into a modeling agency, seeking to become a fitness model, the first thing the agent will ask is for you to take off your shirt. This request is not personal. They are not trying to put you down. The truth is that if you do not have ripped, sexy abs, you cannot work as fitness model. PERIOD!!!

In this blog post today, I will share how I got my abs to become more muscular and ripped. Contrary to what many people may say, you have to treat your abs just as you would treat any other muscle in your body. You have treat your ab muscles just as you would your chest, biceps or triceps. You have to work them hard. Many people do not train their abs until the end of their workouts and then they wonder why their abs do not grow and get ripped. If you treat your abs like an after thought, they will look like an after thought.

I will share one example of my workouts in this blog today. This way, you will get a chance to try this routine without getting overwhelmed by information. When you have tried it, please write back and let me know how you fared with it. I will share more workouts shortly, so stay tuned.

No matter what movement or body part(s) that I’m working on for each day, I begin every workout by doing 20-30 minutes of cardiovascular activity on a treadmill, bike or jumping rope. I then move on to abs, before lifting any weights. To start, I do side planks for 45 seconds on each side and then I do 60 seconds in a regular plank position. After this, I move over and do the weighted rope crunches-leg raises combination. This means that I will do a set of weighted rope crunches and then go over and do a set of leg raises, without resting. The rope crunches work the muscles in the mid to upper region of the abs and leg raises work the lower region of the abs. See the pictures of the exercises below. My goal for working my abs in this routine is to get my ab muscles stronger and make them more dense by using heavy weight on the rope crunches. I would not suggest using heavy weights on leg raises because the lower ab region is weak on most people and may cause abdominal or lower back injury.

The workout is as follows:

Weighted Cable Crunches:

1 Warm up set followed by 4 Sets of 8-10 reps

Leg raises on an incline bench:

1 warm set followed by 4 sets of 10-15 reps

Stretch out your abs and then move on to your movement/body part lift for the day. ENJOY!!!

BLACK WOMEN DON’T WORKOUT BECAUSE OF THEIR HAIR!!!

A friend of mine sent me a link to this article and I had to share it with you. Check it out below. When you know better, you do better.

Here now, a new study chronicled in the scientific journal The Daily Mail, which lays bare womankind’s deepest, darkest, shiniest, most volumizing secret: some women are far more concerned about their hair than about their physique. Ladies. Ladies. You have it backwards.

The shocking findings of the new real survey, out of Wake Forest University: “40 per cent admitted to avoiding exercise because they didn’t want to ruin their hair-dos.” That’s almost half! Most of the women got only half the recommended amount of weekly exercise, and a quarter didn’t exercise at all. I for one am shocked, not to mention appalled. Before I totally blow this thing women do out of the water with knowledge bombs, let’s note the ways in which this is a tricky area for fitness and sex analysts:

1. The survey involved only women. High sexism/ misogyny potential.

2. Only black women were surveyed. High racism potential.

3. Devastatingly high potential for one or the other side in this argument to quote stand up comedians including but not limited to Mo’Nique, Wanda Sykes, Chris Rock, Steve Harvey, and even, in extreme cases, Dane Cook.

Nevertheless, this issue is too important too ignore. It calls, indeed, for some real talk. So where more intellectually timid and/ or wiser (white, male) pundits would bow out of this discussion, citing “a thing” that they “forgot” they have to do, I shall forge ahead. Now. Here is the problem with the common attitude among ladies that they must not mess up their hair by exercising: your hair is less important than your body, when it comes to “looking good.” If you object that “looking good” is a purely subjective measure that cannot be quantified at all across cultures or even across individuals, I will say yes, you are correct. But everyone is, deep down, secretly, interested in whether someone else thinks they look good, and I am someone else, so let’s proceed. If you object that you may care if someone thinks you look good but not if I think you look good, I will say, “Do you see anyone else here? No, it’s just us for now, sorry.” If you object that this issue is “not just about looking good,” I will say that you are lying. If it is not about looking good then hey, fuck your hair, start exercising—at least exercise is good for your health.

In order to determine whether great hair or a great body is more important to looking good, simply try the following thought experiment: Imagine one woman who is bald, with a great body, and another woman who has great hair, and no body. Who is more likely to get a date, or be able to accomplish simple physical tasks requiring at least a basic sort of locomotion? The answer is clear. (The same answer applies for men, by the way.) The good news is that, here in “the real world,” the choice need not always be so drastic. Ladies, you can exercise, have a great body, and men (I do not propose to speak for lesbians, unless the lesbian community would like for me to speak for them, in which case I have many interesting theories) probably won’t even notice your hair, even if it is busted, because they are focused on your body. Or you can neglect exercise, spend a lot of time and money and effort on your hair to make it look great, and men still will not pay attention to your hair, because I just don’t think we really care that much about it, one way or the other.

The choice is clear.

Yes, I understand that hair care for black women is often an expensive and time-consuming proposition, and that its inherent cost and effort make the protection of a hair do a very seductive priority. I am simply proposing here that, if you are the type of person given to seeing hair care and exercise as an either/ or proposition in which one or the other must be chosen, exercise is clearly the proper choice. Of course, a woman might very well say, “Who the hell are you and why the fuck should I care about your opinion, since you appear to be just some random asshole spouting your opinions on the internet, and I’m not sleeping with you or trying to sleep with you or trying to ‘attract’ you in any way whatsoever?” Well, that last part’s not what I heard, but otherwise, that is a justified response. Sure. Fine. That makes sense. You can convince your friends of that. You may even be able to convince yourself. But you will never be able to convince me that hair care should be prioritized over exercise, because I have too much love for womankind in my soul to allow such a myth to flourish. Yes, perhaps I love too much, as did Jesus (and look what happened to him). But I must assert that there is a very strong chance that some of you, ladies, are using your hair as an excuse not to exercise. And in the hardcore heart, there is no room for excuses. (All the room is taken up by love.)

So jump up, run out, and sweat until your hair looks like a god damn mess. It is the right thing you do. If you need me, I will be on the couch. My hair is really short. I’m a man, so it really doesn’t matter.

FIGHT WEIGHT GAIN AND HEART DISEASE BY SLEEPING

Sleeping baby by Ngo Okafor

It’s early monday morning and it’s time to get out there and make the donuts!! The sound of the alarm clock symbolizes the start of another day without sufficient sleep. We all go through it. My mom and dad told me to enjoy sleep as a child because when I grow up, I won’t have the same opportunity to sleep for hours and hours.

That being said, this situation brings up a huge fitness question – Do you want to maintain a healthy weight? Of course you do! If this is your goal, you need to eat healthy foods, exercise regularly and…. get enough sleep; at least 8 hours. Many studies have shown that insufficient sleep can contribute to weight gain, which is why it’s important to treat issues such as sleep apnea and insomnia. While the best dentist can provide you with a custom oral device to treat sleep apnea, insomnia can be a bit tricker to tackle. However, you should explore every option to help you get more rest at night, considering that yet another study has linked sleep deprivation to obesity.

According to research published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the fact that many Americans sleep less than six hours a night may contribute to the large obesity problem in the U.S.

Big issue caused by little sleep Scientists from the Department of Nutritional Sciences and Pennsylvania State University conducted an extensive review of 15 years’ worth of literature to come to their conclusions. They noticed increases in insulin sensitivity and changes in the amount of the hormones ghrelin and leptin in people who were sleep deprived. These hormones regulate appetite, and the changes were associated with people eating more.

“Various investigations, although diverse, indicate an effect of partial sleep deprivation on body weight management,” said lead investigator Sharon M. Nickols-Richardson, M.D., Ph.D. “The intriguing relationship between partial sleep deprivation and excess adiposity makes partial sleep deprivation a factor of interest in body weight regulation, particularly in weight loss.”

The scientists said these findings suggest that sufficient sleep could help people maintain healthy weights.

Keep the pounds off Health magazine states that one of the best ways to maintain your weight is to pay closer attention to calories. Many people do not even realize those bowls of ice cream they eat every night before bed has 600 calories in it, and that simply changing that one aspect of their diets could make a major difference in their health.

Also, it’s a good idea to exercise first thing in the morning, before you can talk yourself out of it. Then the rest of your day is free to do as you please, and you’ll be less likely to come up with a barrage of excuses for why you can’t hit the gym.

THE HYPOCRITICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AFRICANS AND BLACK AMERICANS

Beware of those black Americans. They are a wild bunch of people. They all carry guns. They are lazy. These were all words that I was told over and over, as I prepared to embark on my journey to the United States from Nigeria. Lucky for me, I was 18 years old when I came to America. My personality and character had already formed or else I would have carried these prejudices with me into my new life in America.

Be that as it may, many Africans both in America and in Africa see Black Americans or African-Americans as wild, dangerous, lazy and without culture.

How soon is it forgotten that we as Africans, freely, sold our brothers and sisters into slavery. The “colonizers” came over to Africa with their “magic-like” technology and we, Africans, quickly sold our brothers and sisters to acquire this magic. We sold them for next to nothing, to a people from a strange land, with strange traditions and speaking in an even stranger language. How can we then turn around and expect  our American brothers and sisters who were sold to strangers to now hold on to their culture and belief systems in a strange land? Slavery is designed to break men and thereby breaking apart the black, African, family. It is impossible to hold on to these belief systems when your wife and daughters are raped in front of you and there’s nothing you can do about it. Your manhood destroyed. Your sole purpose in life is just to survive. It is impossible to hold on to these values when you know that the reason your suffering is because your brothers sold you into slavery.

Africans must never forget that our actions caused the current plight of our brothers and sisters. Fostering these prejudices do not make life better for any of us. We have to love one another because we are cut from the same cloth. We are from the same land. When cops beat and kill our brothers, they don’t care if its Travon Martin or Mamadou Diallo. They don’t see the difference between Africans and African-Americans. They see black people. In the very moment that they are beating or killing Africans and African-Americans, all the prejudices and stereotypes that Africans place on black Americans and on us as well. Who’s the dummy now? We are all black people. We are all Africans. The sooner we start to love and help strengthen each other, and get rid of these stereotypes and prejudices, the better off we will all be.

HOME WITH MY PARENTS FOR THANKSGIVING

image

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU AND YOURS. I came home to visit my parents in Salisbury, Maryland, for thanksgiving. I haven’t seen my parents in nearly 4 months, so its good to see and hang out with them. My mom has been cooking up a storm! I have to make sure not to over eat.

My parents are getting older, which is sad for me because I want them to live forever. I believe that this is every child’s fantasy, but it won’t come true. We will all die someday. For this reason, it is important to spend as much time as possible with them.

Even though there isn’t a damn thing to do in Salisbury, I like coming out here. It’s very quiet and it gives me a chance to reset my batteries. I get to workout, sleep and write. These are my favorite things to do. What are yours?

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL

I also checked up on the stats for my film, “A Dog Named Gary” and found out that the views had gone over 700!! That is great number for a little film that I wrote and made. It would not have reached this number if it were not for your support.

I would like to use this forum and opportunity to thank you for watching “A Dog Named Gary” and giving it so many views. Every view counts, so continue to spread the word. If you haven’t seen it, here it again. I hope you enjoy it>>>>

BRANDING AND TATTOOS: READ THE HISTORY OF TATTOOS FOR BLACK PEOPLE AND DECIDE WHETHER IT IS ART

When we were made slaves in America, many plantation owners branded our forefathers the same way they branded their pigs and cattle. The purpose was to identify the slave as being a White man’s merchandise. If the slave became a “runaway,”  he would be brought back to the plantation that had been branded on his flesh and beaten until the whip lashes on his back became lifelong scars themselves. Whether we realize it or not, being “tatted up” or branded is nothing new for Black people in America. Have we forgotten our history? A I watch the Olympics in London, I see large keloids, where fraternity logos were branded on young, black atheletes’ bodies .

Many believe that when something has been tattooed into your skin, it says that you are willing to die in support of it. Tattoos are signs. Signs are symbols. It’s time to move beyond signs and symbols and get to the real thing. Family is the most important thing and that is what we should want to die for. Our men still leave their in record numbers. This must change if we are to move forward. In other words, if you have the love of Jesus tattooed in your heart there’s no need to have his name tattooed on your bicep. It won’t make you love him more.

One of the many tragedies of slavery is that we, as a people, lost our own identity. It left us with nothing of substance to pass onto the next generation. Since then, every passing generation has tried to find a way to let the world know “Hey! I am here!” Our young people subject their bodies to becoming canvases for symbolism, because the substance on the inside was not passed down as it should have been. For when the substance of knowledge takes root on the inside, there is no longer the need for the symbols (tattoos) on the outside. I hope I’m making sense.

I hear people criticize tattoo-wearing youngsters all the time, but seldom do we ask “why?” Well, consider these points.

This generation is the greatest generation we’ve ever produced. They are also the most ignored. One of their biggest complaints is that parents and other adults DO NOT LISTEN. A visible tattoo gets the attention of an adult who might normally pay you no mind. It’s difficult to ignore when your child comes home with “Tired of Being Broke” tattooed across his neck. You wouldn’t listen when he tried to tell you from his mouth so he made his neck (the only one that he has) a billboard for what he is trying to say to a world that just won’t listen. A tattoo can sometimes be a cry for attention.

A tattoo can also be a cry for acceptance rooted in the desire to fit in. It has become somewhat of a “rite of passage” in the hood. Having a tattoo has become symbolic of independence, rebellion, and one’s arrival into his or her “own.” It is a sign of one’s ability to endure pain. I can go on and on about the myriad reasons why Black folks “tat up.” But most important, in my opinion, is how we respond.

I am not passing judgment on people who have tattoos. Just because you see a youngster with a tattoo, that doesn’t mean he wants to rob you. It may be that he has no knowledge of himself and needs to be taught. It may be that he feels this is the best way he knows how to express himself at this time in his life. You’ll never know unless you engage him. And when he or she meets someone who is willing to look past those tats and show love anyway, you’ll see their good nature jump out so far beyond those tattoos that it may startle you.

To my young brothers and sisters:  Well, our bodies are the true house of God and deserve even more respect than a building with His name on it. If you are not a member of “Cash Money Billionaire”, tattooing “Cash Money Billionaire” on your body doesn’t make you a billionaire, it makes you a follower. Strive to become a leader. Don’t settle for a tattoo, go out and make it happen. Your desire to be great will never be manifested through the acquisition of tattoos. It will be manifested through the acquisition and application of knowledge, wisdom and understanding. The more substance you have on the inside, the less symbols you will need on the outside.

CHURCH REFUSES TO MARRY BLACK COUPLE, CHARLES AND TE’ANDREA WILSON, IN MISSISSIPPI

WLBT.com – Jackson, MS

Hurt. Devastated. Crushed.

Those are words an African-American couple used to describe how they felt when they were forced to change the venue of their wedding because of their race.

“Because of the fact that we were black, some of the members of the congregation had got upset and decided that no black couple would ever be married at that church,” Charles Wilson told CNN on Sunday night.

“All we wanted to do in the eyes of God was to be man and wife in a church that we thought we felt loved. What was wrong with that?”

Charles and Te’Andrea Wilson had planned to marry this month at the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs in Mississippi, but were asked at the last minute to move.

Their pastor, Stan Weatherford, made the request on behalf of some congregants who didn’t want to see the couple married there, according to CNN affiliate WLBT. He performed the ceremony at a nearby church.

“This was, had not, had never been done here before so it was setting a new (precedent) and there were those who reacted to that,” Weatherford told WLBT.

“I didn’t want to have a controversy within the church, and I didn’t want a controversy to affect the wedding of Charles and Te’ Andrea. I wanted to make sure their wedding day was a special day,” he reportedly said.

On Sunday, some church members reacted to news of the wedding with surprise, many hadn’t known what happened to the Wilsons until they heard about it on the news, and offered apologies.

“I would say I’m sorry this happened and would you forgive the people who caused it? Because we’re gonna try to,” Bob Mack told WLBT.

Talking about the group that opposed the wedding he said: “We hope we can straighten them out, you know, get them to understand what Christianity is all about because they have some misconceptions about it.”

But for Charles and Te’Andrea Wilson, support from the church now might be too little, too late.

“I had dreams of having my wedding the way I wanted it, and I also dreamed of having it at the church and unfortunately, it didn’t happen,” Te’Andrea Wilson told CNN.

Her husband said if there was a time to “step up and be Christ-like,” it was before their wedding. Hindsight is 20/20.

“If it was such a minority of people, why didn’t the majority stand up and say, ‘in God’s house we don’t do this?’” said Charles Wilson.

GABRIELLE DOUGLAS, BLACK FEMALE GYMNAST SET TO FLY HIGH IN LONDON 2012 OLYMPICS

Aptly nicknamed “Flying Squirrel,” 16-year-old gymnast Gabrielle Douglas defies gravity, a feat that might make Olympic history at this summer’s games.

If the young athlete qualifies at the U.S. Olympic trials on June 28 through July 1, she will join the ranks of other African-American Olympic gymnasts, including Dominique Dawes and Betty Okino, who won, along with their U.S. teammates, the Olympic Team Bronze medal in 1992, and Tasha Schwikert, who joined Dawes on the U.S. team in 2000. Douglas aims to win an individual medal in the sport, which would make her the first black woman to do so since Dawes’ bronze-medal win in 1996.

Already a gold-medal favorite, Douglas almost won her first all-around national title this month at the USA gymnastics national championships in St. Louis, but received a one-point deduction after an unexpected fall.

“I don’t know where my head was,” Douglas told the LA Times in a recent interview, “just getting ahead of myself, all the fans, all the noise. I had expectations, you know?”

Eager to reinstate her winning reputation, Douglas continues to train with her renowned coach Liang Chow, who says the gymnast has made “astounding” improvements.

JOHN OROZCO, BLACK MALE GYMNAST READY TO GRAB GOLD AT LONDON 2012 OLYMPICS

John Orozco won his first medal in gymnastics when he was 9. But he didn’t hold onto that medal for long, giving it to another boy in the competition who was in tears after being teased for a bad performance.

“He walked over to the kid that they were making fun of, and he said, ‘Here you go,’ and he took his medal off and put it around the kid and said, ‘One day you’ll be better than I am. Don’t cry,’ ” says his mother, Damaris Orozco, who still gets choked up recalling that gesture.

“That’s John. That’s what he does. It’s who he is.”

That same Puerto Rican boy from the Bronx is now 19 and has made it all the way to the London Olympics. His heart is set on winning a gold medal — this one for his country. He may be the best hope for a U.S. gold medal in gymnastics in 2012.

Damaris Orozco says that she and her husband, William, are thrilled but not surprised their son made the Olympic team. “When that little boy told us when he was 10 years old, ‘I want to go to 2012,’ we believed him.”

John Orozco started down the path to the Olympics when he was 7. His father, who was a sanitation worker, saw a flier offering free gymnastics classes and signed him up. Orozco has never looked back.

“The minute I stepped foot in the gym I just loved it. I knew it was what I wanted to do for a long time,” Orozco says.

His Olympic dream was inspired by the Hamm brothers at the 2004 Olympics.

By the time he was 14, he was fully committed to getting to the Games. “I said I really want to have that one day — to put the gold medal around my neck, waving to the crowd, knowing that all my hard work has paid off and my dream has come true,” he said.

Gymnastics wasn’t a popular pursuit for a kid from the Bronx, and he hasn’t forgotten the ridicule from schoolmates teasing him for “leaping around in ladies’ tights.”

“The minute I stepped foot in the gym I just loved it,” says John Orozco, who trained five or six days a week growing up.

“They just didn’t understand everything that went into gymnastics. All the work, all the hours, all the blood, sweat and tears.” Besides, he jokes, “Look at me. I’m 5-foot-5, 5-foot-4. Can you imagine me being a basketball player?”

To get the level of coaching her son required, his mother drove him to and from a gym in Chappaqua, New York, an hour away, often twice a day. By 9, he was training four hours daily five and often six days a week.

“When he needed it, we’d give him a day off, but he usually didn’t want to take a day off,” his former coach Carl Schrade says.

Schrade often trained Orozco for free since there wasn’t money to pay for coaching. “With a gymnast like that, you don’t think twice about it,” Schrade says.

Schrade started having big dreams for Orozco by the time the boy was 10. It’s rare to find the perfect balance of strength and grace in a boy, Schrade says, but on top of all that, you need discipline and drive, and he says Orozco had both.

I don’t even have any words to describe this picture. Let’s start from her house. Are all the mirrors shattered in her house? Moving beyond the house, where are her friends? Can they not tell her ridiculous she looks in that thing. Maybe they lied and told her that she looks hot! Sometimes you just look, shake your head and just wonder what the world is coming to.

I worked on my chest today in addition to abs. I’ve been working on doing abs and cardio everyday. I think its working. I will share images soon. Stay tuned.

MITT ROMNEY’S SMART MOVE BY SPEAKING TO THE NAACP

It’s a safe bet that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney will not garner many votes from African-Americans in November.

Not only is he running against the first black president, Barack Obama, the GOP has done such a lousy job of cultivating black voters over the past 40 years that it has pretty much given Democrats an easy path to winning 90% and more of black voters.

Yet despite the long odds, Romney’s decision to speak to at the NAACP national convention in Houston next month is a smart move, and one that could be beneficial to his candidacy and the future prospects of the party.

Let’s face it, the Republican Party is as white as it could be. Sure, the party can boast of the electoral wins of Reps. Allen West and Tim Scott, both African-American; Indian-American Govs. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Nikki Haley of South Carolina; and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and Gov. Susana Martinez of New Mexico, both Hispanic. But the GOP gets virtually nothing from black folks, and Hispanics predominantly vote for Democrats.

And with minorities in America quickly becoming the majority, the GOP had better figure out real soon that relying on white voters to win local, state and national elections ain’t the smartest electoral strategy.

Most of the GOP’s outreach to minority groups is targeted at Latinos. Anything that targets black folks is cursory at best, and frankly, that is really the GOP’s fault.

Any number of white Republicans — Doug Hoye, who now works for Rep. Eric Cantor; former Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman; Ari Fleischer, former press secretary for President George W. Bush — have told me personally that they have prodded the party to expand its messaging to appeal to African-Americans.

Yet it seems the GOP is deathly afraid of reaching out to black folks. I’ve even said that it seems like the GOP is scared of black people. That has ticked off some conservatives, but it’s real.

I’ve had a difficult time getting white Republicans in Congress to come on my TV One cable network Sunday morning news show, “Washington Watch.” We’ve had an open invitation for the last three years for every member of the GOP’s House and Senate caucuses to come on the show, but only Reps. Tom Price of Georgia, Pete Olson of Texas and Steve King of Iowa have accepted the offer.

You would think a backbencher who never gets called by a network would be willing to get some face time on the only one-hour Sunday morning news show targeting African-Americans on a black cable network, but GOP press secretaries have been pretty awful at even returning e-mails and phone calls.

By making the effort to attend the NAACP, Romney will have an opportunity, finally, to present an agenda that will be of interest to African-Americans.

Now I’m sure there will be some who will say, “A black agenda should be an American agenda.” But let’s be real: Politicians appeal to constituencies all of the time. What you say to socially conservative evangelicals isn’t the same thing you tell Latino elected officials, and we know that speaking to women’s organizations isn’t the same as talking a LGBT group.

The reality is that when issues such as mandatory minimum sentences are discussed, that affects African-Americans in a different way than the rest of the country.

If the issue is HIV/AIDS, there is no doubt a general message is vital, but when the rise today is among African-Americans, then a different focus is necessary.

The nation’s housing crisis, of course, is a general issue. But 53% of black wealth was erased between 2005 and 2009 due to the housing foreclosure crisis, according to an analysis of government data by Pew Research, and with the Census Bureau reporting this week that whites have 22 times the wealth of blacks, how to close that gap is worthy of a discussion.

As a major education advocate, I support every form of education — public, private, charter, magnet, home school, online, vouchers, you name it. Romney should be willing to specifically address what he plans on doing about education, especially as it relates to African-Americans. The high school dropout rate in the nation is way too high for African-Americans, and that should be on the table.

With GOP state legislatures adopting onerous voter suppression laws, Romney better understand that protecting the right to vote is mandatory among African-Americans.

Bottom line, Romney has a lot of material to work with when he comes to the NAACP, and Republicans need to understand that speaking on issues that black folks care about, and offering substantive policies and not just happy talk, can lead to success.

When Mike Huckabee was governor of Arkansas, he enjoyed black support at the polls above 40%, and the same for Ohio Sen. George Voinovich. But that only happens when you don’t run from African-Americans, and instead engage them, dialogue with them and work with them.

The GOP should be thinking of the long term and not the short term. Sure, in the interim, it’s not going to result in a huge bloc of votes, but the only way the GOP can break the Democrats’ lock on the black vote is to go after it.

But Mitt, just do me one favor when you speak to the NAACP: Please don’t come with that “Party of Lincoln” crap. The GOP of today ain’t the GOP of the 1800s. Black folks rewarded Republicans for decades based on Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, and Richard Nixon erased that with the implementation of the “Southern strategy,” which was all about alienating black voters and appealing to white voters.

I say it’s time to emancipate the GOP from its hostility toward African-Americans. Speaking to the NAACP is a step, but that must be followed by many other outreach efforts large and small.

But it’s a start. And I’ll be right there in my hometown of Houston, Mitt, to see if you offering empty platitudes or a real blueprint for change that black folks could realistically consider.

FATHERS DAY WEEKEND NUTRITION TIPS: 5 SECRETS TO GET YOU RIPPED!

To all the active fathers out there, thank you for keeping the values of true manhood strong. I hope you noticed that I said “Active” fathers, not just fathers. Any idiot can have an orgasm and become a dad, but it takes a man to be an active father. This your weekend. Live it up. Continue to stay strong by taking better care of yourself. Nutrition is key!!

What if the entire world critiqued your diet? Maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad thing—recent reports have suggested that more than one-third of Americans are overweight. That’s where the new app “The Eatery” comes in: Snap a photo of your food, label it, rate it on a “fit-to-fat” scale, then wait for others around the world to rate it, too.

The new app has brought to light some surprising stats: New Yorkers are big-time coffee drinkers, while the Japanese are big on fish. What else can you learn from diets around the world? Here are five secrets.

1. Slow Down
Ever seen a Spanish restaurant packed with people enjoying dinner at 2 a.m.? Sure, Spaniards eat later, but they also eat slower, says Samantha Heller, M.S., registered dietitian. And they’re on to something: Guys who ate fast packed on 4.2 pounds in eight years compared to 1.5 pounds from slower eaters, according to a Japanese study.

2. Make Your Meal Social
Eating together is a daily social occasion in many European countries, says Heller. Read: No chowing down by yourself. Studies have shown that families who eat together are healthier, and a recent review of 68 reports on the subject found that frequent family meals meant a lower body mass index in children.

3. Go Sweet
When it comes to potatoes, that is. The people of the small Okinawa Island  are thought to have the longest lives of anyone in the world. Why? Partly because of their diet, says Heller. While they eat plenty of fish and vegetables, a key ingredient seems to be sweet potatoes. They’re packed with the antioxidant glutathione, which is shown to boost the health of your immune system and protect against diseases like Alzheimer’s, cancer, and heart attacks.

4. Buy Smart

The southern Italian Mediterranean diet is famed, but reaping the most benefits starts with choosing the right ingredients.  When it comes to fish, go small: sardines and Atlantic mackerel both tend to be richer in omega-3 fatty acids, and lower in contaminants, says Tim Fitzgerald, M.S., marine scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund. And not all olive oil is healthy. Stick with oils packaged in dark bottles, since light and heat are olive oil’s enemies. (

5. Add Turmeric
It’s the magic ingredient in most Indian food, says Heller. Curcumin—a compound in turmeric—is packed with anti-inflammatory and possible anti-carcinogenic properties,” she adds. Your move: Sprinkle half a tablespoon on a fish or chicken dish to add plenty of flavor and big health benefits.

HUMAN CLONING IS UPON US: BABY’S DNA CONSTRUCTED BEFORE BIRTH

Mom gave a blood sample. Dad spit. The entire genome of their fetus was born.

Researchers at the University of Washington have, for the first time, done a near-total genome sequence of a fetus in this way.  Scientists published the results of this study in the journal Science Translational Medicine, suggesting that thousands of genetic diseases could be detected in children while they are still in the fetal stage.

Everyone has two copies of the human genome: One inherited from their biological mother and one from the biological father. With technology that’s being used for genetic sequencing these days, it’s not possible to say which variants on the chromosome you inherited from which parent.

Scientists also sequenced the cell-free component of the mother’s blood – called the plasma – where about 10% of the DNA circulating is from the child, and the other 90% is from the mother. That introduces some difficulty, since it’s hard to tell exactly what comes from the child.

Currently at least some component of diagnosis for genetic disorders in certain circumstances is done using technologies such as amniocentesis, which involves taking a sample of the fluid in the sac that surrounds the fetus in the womb – the mother has to have a needle inserted into her uterus, which is a lot more complicated than a simple blood test and carries some health risks.

“This might reduce the need to do invasive testing for fetuses,” said Jay Shendure, associate professor of genome sciences at the University of Washington.

The focus of the study was the genome of a fetus whose mother’s blood sample was taken at 18 weeks. The analysis of her blood, the father’s saliva and the plasma contributed to a nearly full picture of the fetus’s genome.  This model showed that the fetus had 39 mutations that it had not inherited from either parent.

To confirm, researchers looked at the baby’s umbilical cord blood after it was born. In comparing the constructed DNA (from mom & dad’s samples) and this cord sample,  researchers found five additional mutations that hadn’t come from the mother or the father.  On the whole, the baby’s artificially constructed genome using material from the parents was more than 98% accurate.

Researchers repeated the procedure on a different couple. This time the mother was only eight weeks pregnant when she donated her sample, and the father submitted a blood sample, which was processed in the same way that the other father’s saliva was. This resulted in a fetal genome sequence that was 92% accurate.

“We could have brought it higher just by sequencing her plasma more deeply,” said Jacob Kitzman, lead study author and graduate research fellow at the University of Washington.

There are also parts of the genome that technology available today just cannot measure very well, Kitzman says, so that’s partly why there’s not a 100% accuracy here.

Is gender selection of a fetus ethical?

Eight weeks are, however, well before mothers are able to get amniocentesis, which is often used at around 16 weeks.

It took more than a month to get the results from the sequencing, which is a lot longer than would be ideal in a clinical situation, Kitzman noted. In order to become more widespread, the technique would have to be easier to administer, quicker and less expensive.

So how much does this cost? Right now, in the ballpark of $50,000, Shendure says – and while that seems like a lot, keep in mind that this whole process involved sequencing the genomes of the mother and the father, separately analyzing the plasma and then double-checking the result with a sequence from the child’s umbilical cord.

The price tag for sequencing has dropped by 10,000 fold in the last five years, Shendure says, so he expects this fetal genome technique will also become less expensive over time.

In the long-term, the technique may even help garner new insights about genetic diseases, but more immediately it would be restricted to identifying the genetic disorders that we already understand, he said.

“Whether this is the sort of thing we would do on a widespread basis for all pregnancies, that’s an open question and a complex one,” he said.

The complexity comes, of course, from the ethical issues that arise concerning parents who would selectively abort fetuses that are predestined for certain conditions.

The technology worries medical ethicist Harriet Washington, who fears parents could use genome sequencing to predict and selectively abort children that don’t meet certain standards – not just for diseases, but for things like hair and eye color.

“If we don’t look at the dangers, if we adopt this Pollyanna attitude and only look at the benefits, then it’s really easy to end up in a situation where we are blindsided,” Washington said.

Perhaps one day, even intelligence scores or skills could be forecasted, creating a situation akin the movie “Gattaca” where babies are basically custom-created to suit the needs of parents who can afford the technology.

What do you think about all this? Share your thoughts in the comments.

WHO IS CNN’S DON LEMON?

You would think that I would have been used to seeing black people on TV by now. The truth is that every time I see a black person…well more specifically, a black man on TV, I look a bit closer. Many people may not understand this, but black men are always portrayed in such a negative light in the media. This constant negative portrayal continues to drive the gap between relationships between black and white people. It makes white people fear me and look at me as aggressive and threatening.

I feel an instant sense of pride when I see positive images of black men on TV. My pride grows even more so when the black man on TV is well spoken, sharply dressed and good-looking. So, you can I imagine my swelling of my pride whenever I see Don Lemon on CNN. He is very well spoken, always impeccably dressed, and good looking. He represents black men all over the world, very well. I wanted to know more about this man, so I did my research. I dug up some great stuff. I found that not only is he all the attributes that I mentioned above, he is also fearless. Get to know more about Don Lemon below:

 Early life

Don Lemon was born on March 1, 1966 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He majored in broadcast journalism at Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, New York, and also attended Louisiana State University.

While in college, Lemon worked as a news assistant at WNYW (TV 5 in New York City). He has also reported as a weekend anchor for WCAU (TV 10 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania); anchor and investigative reporter for KTVI (TV 2 in St. Louis); and anchor for WBRC (TV 6 in Birmingham, Alabama).

He reported for NBC News’ New York City operations, including working as a correspondent for Today and NBC Nightly News and an anchor on Weekend Today and MSNBC. In August 2003 he began at NBC O&O station WMAQ-TV (5 in Chicago), and was a reporter and the 5 p.m. local news co-anchor.

Lemon joined CNN in September 2006. Lemon has been outspoken in his work at CNN, criticizing the state of cable news and questioning the network publicly.

Personal life

During an on-air interview with members of Bishop Eddie Long’s congregation on September 25, 2010, Lemon said that he was a victim of sex abuse as a child, and that it wasn’t until he was thirty that he told his mother about it.

In his memoir, Transparent, released in May 2011, Lemon acknowledges publicly that he is gay and discusses colorism in the black community, racism, homophobia, and the sexual abuse that he suffered as a child.Lemon lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

Honors and awards

Lemon won an Emmy Award for a special report on the real estate market in Chicago. He received an Edward R. Murrow Award for his coverage of the capture of the D.C. area sniper, and a number of other awards for reports on Hurricane Katrina, and the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

Lemon was voted as one of the 150 most influential African-Americans by Ebony magazine in 2009.
