RYAN LOCHTE BEATS MICHAEL PHELPS TO WIN FIRST USA GOLD MEDAL

Ryan Lochte captured the United States’ first gold medal of the 2012 Olympic Games on Saturday, soundly defeating rival swimming great Michael Phelps in a highly anticipated men’s 400-meter individual medley, while China blazed past its rivals throughout the day to secure a Games-best four gold medals.

Brazil’s Thiago Pereira secured silver in the individual medley, while Phelps did not medal, coming in fourth place. Japan’s Kosuke Hagina won bronze.

“I put the work in,” Lochte said Saturday after the race. “I’m just going out there and having fun, and doing what I do best.”

Both men had made it through qualifying heats to the final — Phelps only by a whisker.

His subpar performance put the former champion in lane 8 rather than in the preferred middle lanes, where there’s less chance of disruption from other swimmers’ waves.

Lochte was in lane 3.

The 27-year-old Phelps, who already has 14 gold medals from previous Games, had been looking to add to his pot of Olympic gold, and will get another shot when he likely faces Lochte in the 200-meter individual medley, as well as the 200-meter and 100-meter butterfly.

But the Games’ attention quickly shifted on Saturday to Lochte’s dominating performance.

“I know it’s my time and I’m ready,” he said after his win.

MICHAEL PHELPS BEATS RYAN LOCHTE IN FINAL 200M DUEL

It may have been Michael Phelps’s 27th birthday, but it was the sellout crowd of 14,335 at Omaha’s CenturyLink Center that got a treat on Saturday. In another head-to-head race with Ryan Lochte that delivered suspense and goosebumps?are there two other athletes anywhere who so reliably deliver on their hype??Phelps won the Olympic trials 200-meter individual medley, touching the wall in a world’s best time of 1:54.84, nine one-hundredths of a second ahead of Lochte and nearly four seconds ahead of third-place Conor Dwyer. For those keeping score at home, that gives Phelps two close wins to Lochte’s one in their three head-to-head matchups here so far.

“It feels good to be back on that side,” said Phelps, who finished second when Lochte set the world record in the 200 IM at the World Championships in Shanghai last summer. “But I’m sure that’s not going to be the end of us going back and forth.”

As gutty as Phelps’ win was, there’s no question Lochte had the more impressive performance of the night. In the space of an hour he won the 200 backstroke, holding off a hard-charging Tyler Clary to win by less than half a second; he nearly beat Phelps in the 200 IM, and he qualified 6th for the finals of the 100 butterfly, an event he rarely contests. Even Phelps, who has had his share of overloaded schedules over the years, was impressed. “He’s tough,” he said. “You saw that tonight. He got up and raced three very challenging races and did them well.”

But not without cost. “Tonight was probably the most pain I’ve endured in a swimming competition,” said Lochte. “Going back-to-back-to-back was definitely hard, but I was up for the challenge. It’s something I’ve been training for the last four years so I knew I was able to do it.”

A significant part of Lochte’s training has been weight work, both the Strongman version, where he flips tractor tires, heaves beer kegs in the air and whips heavy ropes, and more traditional power circuits that include squats and Olympic lifts like cleans and snatches and jerks. “Basically everything is designed to make him a better jumper because jumping is highly correlated to better starts, better walls and a great streamlined dolphin kick,” says Matt Delancey, Lochte’s strength coach at Florida.

Lochte, who has no peers aside from Phelps as an underwater kicker, has made a signature of the third wall in 200 meter races. That’s where he explodes off the wall and dolphin kicks underwater for about 15 meters, usually popping up ahead of the field if he wasn’t there already. In the 200 backstroke, the third wall is where he caught Clary, who had been leading at the first two turns.

“I think underwaters are all about pain tolerance,” says Delancey. “Think about holding your breath; it doesn’t feel good. You have to have a real huge lung capacity and you have to have a real considerable pain tolerance to swim, hold your breath that long underwater and then come up and still swim fast. That’s something Ryan has a lot of, the ability to endure. Of all the athletes I’ve ever seen or trained, Ryan is number one in pain tolerance.”

The 200 IM, coming so quickly after the 200 back, had to hurt. Showing no mercy for his still recovering rival, Phelps set a punishing pace in the butterfly leg. “I kind of used Ryan having the 200 back before,” said Phelps, looking not the least bit remorseful. “I set the pace early. I know the 200 back longcourse is really tough race, and it takes a lot out of your legs. I wanted to try to jump on it the first 100 and see what happened, but I think our backstroke we let off a little bit. We were playing the cat-and-mouse game again. The last lap we raced like crazy.”

Just like the 200 freestyle race earlier this week, the two matched strokes the whole way. Though Phelps led throughout, it was never by much: his cushion was .02 after the backstroke, .26 after the breaststroke and just .09 in the end, the closest men’s 200 IM finish in trials history. “I think you’re going to see some more races like that over the next few weeks,” said Phelps. “We kind of seem to like to play with each other, if one person goes, the other one goes.

Lochte’s decision to swim the 100 fly was surprising, especially given what else was on his plate Saturday evening. But it’s a boon to the crowd that will flock here Sunday night. The Phelps-Lochte showdown will continue for one more night. Though he qualified 6th, 1.12 seconds behind Phelps, the two-time Olympic champ and current world record holder, Lochte isn’t swimming the finals tomorrow as a lark. “I’m going up there to win it,” he said. “My legs will be a little bit rested and hopefully I can put a better show than I did tonight.”

WE ALL SAY WE WILL DO IT, THIS DAD ACTUALLY BEATS HIS DAUGHTER’S ATTACKER TO DEATH

SHINER, Texas — A father beat to death with his hands a man who tried molesting his 4-year-old daughter after the little girl was heard screaming on the family’s rural Texas ranch, authorities said Monday.

Lavaca County Sheriff Micah Harmon said the father, whose name has not been released, is unlikely to be arrested for Saturday’s killing and that no evidence so far has led investigators to doubt his story.

“There doesn’t appear to be any reason other than what he told us,” Harmon said.

Harmon said the victim was a 47-year-old man from Gonazles with no apparent prior criminal history. His name continued to be withheld Monday because authorities still hadn’t tracked down any of his family.

The victim was an “acquaintance” of the father who had come to help care for some horses, Harmon said. He did not know how long the two men may have known each other. The girl was taken to a hospital to be examined and has since been released, Harmon said.

The father called police late Saturday afternoon and told them he attacked a man caught trying to sexually assault his daughter, Harmon said. The alleged attack happened near a barn where some horses were being kept.

“In the course of trying to get her away from him, and protect her, he struck the subject several times in the head and the subject died,” Harmon said.

Harmon said a grand jury will decide what, if any, charges the father will face.

The victim’s body was sent to the Travis County medical examiner for an autopsy.

The ranch near Shiner is about 130 miles east of Houston. Killings are rare in rural Lavaca County: Harmon said his office has only investigated six since in his eight years as sheriff.

LEBRON JAMES SCORES 45 POINTS TO BEAT DOWN THE BOSTON CELTICS

For all those Lebron James haters, prepare to eat his shorts. As I write this, reports are that Lebron James is in the locker room reading a fiction novel while all the reporters who had marked him for dead, have no choice but to patiently wait. I love it!!!

BOSTON – No one can say LeBron James retreated from the moment this time.

James turned in one of the Heat’s all-time greatest postseason performances Thursday night in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals, scoring 45 points in Miami’s 98-79 victory. Now, it comes down to one game for a ticket to the NBA Finals, and the Heat has homecourt advantage. Game 7 of the series is Saturday at AmericanAirlines Arena.

The Heat entered Game 6 losers of 15 of its previous 16 games at TD Garden but, fueled by a virtuosic show from James, Miami took an early lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Considering the circumstances, it might have been James’ best postseason performance of his career. Wade’s 46 points against Boston in the 2010 playoffs is the franchise postseason record.

“We’re not going to celebrate about this win,” James said. “It’s a one-game series now and it’s in our building.”

In 2010, James and his Cleveland Cavaliers trailed 3-2 against the Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals and James wilted from the moment in Boston. Not this time. James averaged a point a minute, going 19 of 26 from the field in 45 minutes. He played every minute of the first three quarters before watching from the bench in the final minutes.

“I just wanted to try to lead my team the best I could,” said James, who also had 15 rebounds and five assists. “I’m glad we were able to get this win a force Game 7.”

Led by James’ brilliance, the Heat shot 48.7 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from three-point range. The Heat led by double figures throughout the second half and its largest lead was 25 points. The Heat out-rebounded the Celtics 44-34.

Once again, Dwyane Wade wasn’t himself to begin the game but once again he played well in the fourth quarter. Wade started Game 6 with four points in the first half and was 1 of 6 from the field in the first quarter. But, while he might playing with an injured knee, he still had enough left in reserve to give the Heat a boost in crunch time.

Wade finished with 17 points on 6 of 17 from the field and scored eight in the final period. Wade and James were the only players to score in double digits for the Heat but Mario Chalmers contributed nine important points on three three-pointers. The Heat was 7 of 16 from three-pointer range, with James adding two and Shane Battier delivering a pair as well.

James had 30 points in the first half and the Heat led by 13 points to begin the third and fourth quarters. It was a postseason high for James in a first half and it matched the most by any player in a half this season. Monta Ellis of Golden State did it against Oklahoma City in February.

Wade had a hand in the Heat’s first seven points of the fourth quarter. He scored four straight points to begin the period and then whipped a difficult pass to Battier in the corner, who swished his second three-pointer of the game to give the Heat an 18 points.

Chalmers drained a wide open three-pointer with 5:56 left in the third quarter to give the Heat a 15-point lead. It was Chalmers’ third three-pointer of the game, giving the Heat five three-pointers on its first 11 attempts.

James made the Heat’s sixth three-pointer less than two minutes later to put the Heat ahead 72-59.

Wade, who struggled early in first halves throughout the series, began the game 0 of 4. For the series, Wade is shooting 30 percent (7 of 23) in first quarters. Meanwhile, James was phenomenal. He started the game with 14 points in the first quarter, shooting 6 of 7 from the field to go along with three rebounds and an assist.

He made 11 straight shots between misses on his first and final attempts of the half. Chris Bosh came off the bench to contribute seven points, six rebounds and three blocks in his second game back from injury.
