DANA JACOBSON: TELLS OF SEX ABUSE AND MOLESTATION AS A CHILD

Just days after the jury handed down aguilty verdict on 45 of the 48 chargesagainst former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, a former ESPN anchor has been emboldened to speak for the first time about sexual abuse that she suffered in her youth.

In a post to her personal blog, Jacobson writes, “I was molested as a child.” She goes on to write about the abuse she suffered from a babysitter and expressed solidarity with the victims of Sandusky and all sexual predators.

Like the young men who bravely took the stand in the Sandusky trial, I was molested as a child. That’s still not easy for me to say, let alone write and share publicly, but if we’ve learned anything from the Sandusky scandal it’s that the time for silence is over. As I heard one Sandusky victim put it, it’s time to “find my voice.”

Even as jurors began deliberating in the trial of Sandusky, there were more young men coming forward to allege sexual abuse by the former Penn State assistant football coach. Not only did an adopted son of Sandusky’s release a statement through a lawyer recounting abuse, but Travis Weaver told NBC of abuse he claims took place several years ago.

Applauding Weaver for going public with his NBC interview, Barbara Dorris, Outreach Director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), released a statement saying that “We hope his courage will inspire others who are suffering because of child sex crimes.”

Jacobson references Weaver’s choice to speak out several times as she addresses the facts and ramifications of the abuse she suffered. She also expresses her anger that Sandusky was free to commit crimes despite their being several chances for him to be stopped sooner.

Maybe that’s why I’m so sickened and angry by what unfolded in the Sandusky case. People knew. One mother spoke out. Mike McQueary was an eye witness. At the very least, we know alleged abuse was reported within the Penn State football administration and Athletic Department. Still it continued.

After a decade of work with ESPN, Jacobson left the sports media monolith in April after her contract expired. Prior to writing about her abuse, Jacobson had written six posts on her blog since leaving ESPN on topics ranging from gardening to the suicide of NFL icon Junior Seau.

JERRY SANDUSKY FOUND GUILTY ON SEX ABUSE CHARGES

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars after a jury convicted him on 45 of 48 counts related to sexual abuse of boys, ending a painful chapter for victims and the entire university.

But the ordeal is not over, as Sandusky’s defense team announced plans to appeal despite the mountain of convictions against his client.

“If you win on one of the appeal issues, everything probably falls,” attorney Joe Amendola said. “So all we have to do is convince an appellate court that one of the issues that we will raise is worthy of a reversal. … It doesn’t matter, it could be 100 counts, and it would still all come back if an appeal is granted.”

His co-counsel, Karl Rominger, cited questionable court decisions during the trial as grounds for appeal.

“The judge was very fair to us on many levels, but there were a lot of unique legal issues where he made rulings that could be overturned, not because they were, per se, wrong, but because the law in the area was so unclear,” Rominger said.

He said “substantial constitutional questions” surrounded the prosecution’s ability to use an accuser’s claims based on hearsay alone. “All the convictions could come back on that ruling alone,” Rominger said.

The attorney said Saturday that Sandusky has been placed on what is commonly known as suicide watch for his own safety. He is being held in protective custody, in an area separate from other inmates, as he awaits sentencing.

JOHN TRAVOLTA SEXUAL BATTERY LAWSUIT DROPPED!

John Travolta is as cool as the other side of the pillow right now. All the sexual battery charges against him have been dropped. Find out more…..

The remaining plaintiff in the sexual battery lawsuit against John Travolta fired his lawyer, but the case could continue with another lawyer and another court, two lawyers told CNN on Thursday.

Gloria Allred confirmed Thursday that the plaintiff known as John Doe #2 has hired her to represent him and possibly file a new legal action against the actor.

“We believe that the lawsuit should be filed in another court and, therefore, the lawsuit that was on file was dismissed without prejudice,” she told CNN. “We will be conferring with our client regarding what will happen next in this case.”

Okorie Okorocha, the lawyer who initially filed the lawsuit in federal court last week, said his second client called him Thursday morning and said he was fired. He later learned Allred had been hired.

The suit, which accused the actor of groping two male massage therapists at hotels in Los Angeles and Atlanta in January, is being dismissed Thursday by Okorocha.

Travolta’s lawyer, Martin Singer, has called the allegations by both men “ridiculous.”

John Doe #1, who said that Travolta sexually harassed him at the Beverly Hills Hotel, hired Allred on Tuesday, just hours after he withdrew from Okorocha’s lawsuit.

Allred said Tuesday that she and John Doe #1 would discuss if a new lawsuit would be filed against Travolta.

“We are in the process of conferring with him regarding the next steps, which he may wish to take,” Allred said.

That dismissal was “without prejudice, which means that he is still legally entitled to file a lawsuit against John Travolta if he chooses,” Allred said.

There was no immediate reaction from Travolta’s lawyer to the latest developments.

John Doe #1 withdrew from the lawsuit after it was learned Travolta was in New York, not Los Angeles, on January 16, the day he had alleged the massage incident took place.

Okorocha told CNN the date should have been January 15, but the mistake would have hampered the chances of John Doe #2 in court. He also said “personality conflicts” with John Doe #1 contributed to the decision.

The lawyer insisted in a CNN interview Tuesday that he would “mop up” in the courtroom with the allegations made by John Doe #2.

Despite losing both clients, Okorocha told CNN Thursday that he still believes they “absolutely have cases” against the actor.

He accused Allred of stealing his clients, which she told CNN was “completely false.”

“Mr. Okorocha’s representations are false, outrageous and defamatory,” Allred said Wednesday. “John Doe 1 and John Doe 2 contacted my offices and neither I nor anyone in my law firm solicited either of these two clients. Both clients first called me and asked me to represent them.”

Allred said after practicing law for 37 years, she does not solicit clients.

“Clients come to me,” Allred said. “John Doe 1 and John Doe 2 called me without my having any contact with them whatsoever prior to their phone calls.”

She demanded that Okorocha retract “his false statements.”

“I value my reputation and will defend it vigorously both publicly and in court,” she said.

Okorocha, reached by Wednesday afternoon, said he had a text message exchange on Tuesday with his client saying he was called by Allred.

“I get the case to national prominence and then someone who only does press conferences and sideshows, and doesn’t actually go to court or do trials, just steps in and says, ‘I’ll take the clients,’” Okorocha said.

Okarocha predicted that Allred would quickly reach a settlement with Travolta that would include an agreement not to disclose its existence.

“I will find out what’s in that settlement and I will get my equitable share of that settlement, because I did the majority of the work to get to where we are,” he said.

Okarocha said there are two more people he represents who may become plaintiffs.

“If Travolta doesn’t take responsibility, I’m going to file those cases,” he said.

CATHOLIC PRIEST ORDERED TO GIVE FIST-BUMPS TO KIDS INSTEAD OF HUGS

This is a sign of the times in which we are living in. Bad apples always ruin the entire batch. A Catholic priest known for hugging children in his Michigan parish will now give fist-bumps instead.

The change came after an anonymous letter sent recently to the Diocese of Grand Rapids chastised the clergyman for the practice, suggesting that it may no longer be appropriate in these times, according to reports.

As a result, the Rev. Bill Langlois of St. Patrick and St. Anthony Parish told parishioners in a recent letter that he will change the way he greets children — “When I would hug the kids, I would say, ‘I am hugging you, you are hugging me and Jesus is hugging us,’” he says — from now on after more than a decade.

“It’s painful, but it’s the world that we live in right now, so we want to do the right thing,” Langlois said.

The letter didn’t allege any wrongdoing, but highlighted that “this family was a little concerned that I was hugging kids,” Langlois told 24 Hour News 8. “The world we live in has changed since 2002,” the statement read. “In our ministry we must respect that change.”

But Ed Carey, the chancellor of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids, told ABC News that this was not the first time the church has received correspondence about Langlois’ hugging little ones — in fact it has been an “ongoing discussion” within the diocese.
“From time to time, on a fairly regular basis, people would write and say, ‘You know, I understand what he’s doing. I think that it’s perfect innocent, however the appearance may not be good for him and it may be sending, for some children, the wrong message,’” Carey told ABC.

HOSNI MUBARAK, EGYPT’S EX-PRESIDENT, SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON

Cairo (CNN) — The Cairo courtroom erupted in chaos Saturday after an Egyptian judge convicted former President Hosni Mubarak, but acquitted six of his aides, for the killing of protesters during last year’s pro-democracy uprising.

The judge handed Mubarak, 84, a life sentence.

It appeared the entire gallery of men dressed in suits began shouting and stood on their chairs chanting that the decision wasn’t harsh enough. Fists flew and at least one man suffered a bleeding gash to his chin.

“We want honesty!” they shouted. “Revolution til victory!”

Other Mubarak opponents headed to Tahrir Square, the center of last year’s protests, shouting, “Illegitimate! Illegitimate!” They also chanted for Mubarak’s execution.

The echoing cheers outside the police academy where the trial was held turned to angry shouts as people heard that all of Mubarak’s senior advisers and his two sons were acquitted.

The mostly anti-Mubarak crowd threw rocks at police, smashed cars, and cursed the ruling military council.

Mubarak was immediately transferred to a prison in southern Cairo to serve his life sentence, a prosecutor said, a final fall from grace for a man who ruled the nation with an iron fist for nearly three decades.

“Mubarak arrived to Tura prison by helicopter, and will be admitted to a hospital in prison,” said Adel Saeed, a spokesman for the prosecutor. A spokesman for the Interior Ministry said Mubarak refused to leave the helicopter on arrival at the prison.

About 840 people died and more than 6,000 others were injured in last year’s 18-day uprising, according to Amnesty International.

Arab leaders: Where are they now?

The sentence delivered by Judge Ahmed Refaat was the final chapter of Mubarak’s iron rule of Egypt that ended in February 2011.

Handing down the verdict before a packed courtroom, the judge praised the revolution, saying it offered people relief after living “in 30 years of dark without any hope.”

He found Mubarak guilty of the killings, but cleared him of corruption and misappropriation of funds.

The judge also convicted former Interior Minister Habib El Adly of ordering security forces to kill protesters and sentenced him to life in prison.

The courtroom melee erupted after the judge cleared six of Mubarak’s aides, primarily security officials, in connection with the killings. Authorities removed Mubarak and the judge from the courtroom amid the outburst.

The judge also cleared Mubarak’s sons, Gamal and Alaa, of corruption and using their father’s political power for profit.

“The verdicts are insults to the Egyptian people and the judicial system. It’s a festival of innocent verdicts to El Adly’s aides who killed and tortured free citizens for years,” said Rami Shath, a member of the Egyptian Revolution Alliance.

The trial has been a spectacle few Egyptians thought they would see. Images broadcast worldwide showed the 84-year-old former leader wheeled into the court on a hospital gurney and locked in a defendant’s cage.

The verdict follows Friday’s expiration of a notorious emergency law that was in effect since shortly after Mubarak came to power in October 1981 and gave police sweeping powers. It comes ahead of a polarizing mid-June runoff in the presidential election that pits the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi against the more secularist Ahmed Shafiq, a former official in Mubarak’s regime.

Analysts in Egypt say the verdict may not help Shafiq and may strengthen Morsi’s chances, given his position as an opposition figure.

The Muslim Brotherhood said it is not happy with Saturday’s verdict and may call for a retrial. Shafiq’s side did not immediately comment on the outcome.

GENDER DOUBLE STANDARD WHEN TEACHERS SEXUALLY ABUSE BOYS

When male teachers sext or have sex with their students, nobody laughs. When female teachers do this, the titters don’t stop. Fictional examples: Skins, Big Love, and many more. Real-life example: this wink-wink blog post about Gabriela Compton, a 21-year-old (former) middle-school teacher’s aide in Phoenix, Arizona.

Compton sent a 14-year-old boy at her school a picture of herself topless. He sexted back a photo of a penis he’d found on the Internet. A few sexts later, Compton found herself accused of having sex with the boy in the back of her van. A 13-year-old went to the police and said he’d sexted with Compton, too, and she reportedly admitted to that and the sex, too. She was charged with three counts of sexual abuse, three counts of sexual abuse with a minor, and one other related count. Altogether the charges carried a maximum sentence of 39 years in prison. In March, she pled guilty to the sexual abuse counts—and got a sentence of lifetime probation. She’ll have to register as a sex offender, but she won’t go to prison.

As law professor and sentencing guru Doug Berman points out, it is not really possible to imagine a male teacher getting off so lightly for having sex with a 14-year-old girl. Is Compton’s light sentence typical? Can it be justified?

The answer to the first question is mostly no: Compton’s wrist slap is in important ways an outlier. My colleague Will Saletan has been here before me. A teacher named Beth Geisel pled guilty to molesting a student in 2006, prompting CNN’s Nancy Grace to ask: “Why is it, when a man rapes a little girl, he goes to jail, which I’m all for, by the way, but when a woman rapes a boy, she had a breakdown?” Saletan pointed out a 1991 study that found little difference in the likelihood that male and female sex offenders would go to prison. And he updated the numbers with his own informal survey of 37 inmates who’d recently been sentenced. What was different was how long they would remain incarcerated: Will found that the men were in prison for an average of 11 years, while the women were there for less than two. But the women were also far less likely to have molested multiple children or to have molested kids under the age of 16. That is where Compton is in unusual and unfortunate territory. Since she was accused of having sex with a 14-year-old and sexting him and a 13-year-old, she’s not a Notes on a Scandal gal having sex with an older teen. She was doing something ickier.

Is her sentence of probation nonetheless justified because women molesting boys is just different than men molesting girls? There are salient differences between men and women when it comes to sex offenses. For starters, men are far more likely to commit sexual assault than women are, accounting for 96 percent of the total. They are also rearrested much more frequently.

The women who perpetrate this misconduct not surprisingly have serious problems. Like the men, they have poor coping skills and trouble showing empathy. This report by the Center for Sex Offender Management breaks female sex offenders into three types, based on clinical observations. The first group were coerced by men into abusing children, even their own. The second were themselves victims of incest or other sexual abuse—this kind of history is far more likely for women sex offenders than for men, and the women in this category also tend to victimize young children in their own families. The third type, labeled “teacher/lover,” sounds more like Gabriela Compton. They were “often struggling with peer relationships, seemed to regress and perceive themselves as having romantic or sexually mentoring ‘relationships’ with under-aged adolescent victims of their sexual preference, and, therefore, did not consider their acts to be criminal in nature.”

All the joking assumes that 13- and 14-year-old boys just want to have sex, but the law provides that it is in fact criminal behavior for an adult, male or female. Saletan has written about how the age of consent varies by time and place. The research on the cognitive ability and psychosocial maturity of teenagers shows (not surprisingly) that both tend to rise as they get older. Did the student who sent Compton Internet photos of a penis understand what he was getting into? What about the 13-year-old who went to the cops—does that suggest that something was off here, and that it makes sense to view the pairing of a young teenager and an adult as a crime, no matter who is which gender?

I’d rather the law err on the side of caution and uniformity here. And I can’t really get my mind around probation for a woman who was facing nearly four decades in prison, even if it is probation for life that includes sex-offender registration. Thirteen-year-old boys should be shielded from predatory adults the same way girls are. If they don’t think they want the shield, well, maybe they don’t know what’s good for them.
