WOOHOO!! I JUST ADDED “THEATER ACTOR” TO MY CREDITS

Ngo Okafor in his first stage production

Ngo Okafor in his first stage production

I received a message on FaceBook from Ashley Bell. Ashley Bell is Yale University graduate and the founder of Divaria Productions here in  NYC. Divaria Productions is an Opera Production Company. Divaria Productions produced a Spanish zarzuela, La Dolorosa, in honor of International Women’s Day on Saturday March 8 at 7:30 pm in collaboration with a company in Spain, la Riojalirica. There was singing in Spanish but there was also dialogue mostly in English.  The director of the show was looking for someone to play Padre Lucas, a priest. And that’s where I came in.

The show was presented at the piece in Old St Patrick’s Cathedral in Soho, a beautiful church with a history of immigration. I was so excited to be in this production because for my entire career as an actor, all my work was in film and TV. I had always thought about doing work on stage because all the great actors had done it and continue to do so. I was a bit nervous because besides the stage work that I had done in theater class, I had never been on stage.
The Cast of La DolorosaThe stage is very different from film or TV. The audience is live and you only have one shot to get it right. You can’t yell cut and start over. You don’t have several takes to get it right. You only have one shot!! This is the reason why rehearsal is so important. We rehearsed for an entire week, in a freezing church, in order to make sure that there weren’t any mistakes. On Saturday, it was go time. When it was show time, I wasn’t nervous because no one was going to punch me in the face. This is one of several great tools that boxing has given me. After fighting large grown men in front of huge crowds, for many years, very little scares me. No matter how bad I may screw up on stage, no one is going to punch me in the face.
The audience loved the show. It was sad because once the show was over, it was done…FOR EVER!! You can’t go back and see it ever again. It was so much fun and I look forward to doing it again. I would like to thank Ashley Bell and Anton, our director for giving me the opportuinity to be in a stage production.
Stay tuned for more

NELSON MANDELA DIES AT 95: ANTI-APARTHEID LEADER AND ICON OF SOUTH AFRICA

Nelson Mandela on Day After Release

(CNN) – Nelson Mandela, the revered statesman who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead South Africa out of decades of apartheid, has died, South African President Jacob Zuma announced late Thursday. Mandela was 95.

“He is now resting. He is now at peace,” Zuma said. “Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father.”

“What made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human,” the president said in his late-night address. “We saw in him what we seek in ourselves.”

Mandela will have a state funeral. Zuma ordered all flags in the nation to be flown at half-staff from Friday through that funeral.

Mandela, a former president, battled health issues in recent months, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations.

With advancing age and bouts of illness, Mandela retreated to a quiet life at his boyhood home in the nation’s Eastern Cape Province, where he said he was most at peace.

Despite rare public appearances, he held a special place in the consciousness of the nation and the world.

MIAMI HEAT DEFEATS SAN ANTONIO SPURS TO WIN 2013 NBA FINALS

lebron-wade-hug-win nba title by Ngo OkaforLEBRON James had that look in his eyes again, as the Santonio Spurs dared him to beat them with jump shots. Lebron responded by knocking down big shot after big shot. The Spurs fought hard, but could not overcome the power and athleticism of Lebron, Dwayne Wade and THE MIAMI HEAT! The Miami Heat went on to beat the San Antonio Spurs, to win back-to-back  NBA championships.

Playing at home on Thursday at the American Airlines Arena, the Heat claimed the final game to win the series 4-3.

LeBron James with 37 points in addition to his 12 rebounds, was the team’s highest scorer, while teammate Dwyane Wade added 23 points and 10 rebounds to the total.

Tim Duncan scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Spurs while Kawhi Leonard added 19 points and 16 rebounds.

lebron james by ngo okaforJames was named the most valuable player of the NBA final series, a distinction he also claimed in last year’s competition.

This is the team’s third NBA title after winning the championship in 2006 and 2012.

In 2012, the Miami Heat, who were the Eastern Conference champions, beat the Western Conference champions the Oklahoma City Thunder 4-1.

NGO OKAFOR’S NEW ARTICLE IN WELL AND GOOD

Ngo Okafor in Well And GoodNigerian-born Okafor got into boxing at 31, an age that’s often closer to retirement for others used to the ring. But within three years, he became a two-time heavyweight champion, winning back-to-back Golden Gloves in 2008 and 2009.

His chiseled physique also led him to a career in modeling, and you’ve probably seen his muscled body inMen’s Health or V Magazine.

Now, Okafor uses his knowledge of fitness and boxing with celebrity (and regular) clients at Peak Performancepersonal-training studio in the Flatiron, where he may have you switch from squats and lunges to jab and upper-cut combos.

Hey -
Didn’t know if Ingo saw this hit today – just in case not – voila…

Nice press!

WANETTA GIBSON: CHARGED AND ORDERED TO PAY 2.6 MILLION DOLLARS

Wanetta Gibson image pictureThe woman whose false rape accusation sent a high school football star to prison has been ordered to pay a $2.6 million judgement in connection to the case, NBC 4 Los Angeles reports.

Wanetta Gibson (pictured) was ordered by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge on Friday to pay a $1.5 million, plus an additional $1.1 million in fees. Gibson was an acquaintance of Brian Banks at Long Beach Polytechnic High School when she accused him of raping her in a school stairwell. Gibson then sued the Long Beach Unified School District, claiming the school was not safe; she won a $750,000 settlement.

Gibson’s false accusation sent Banks to prison for five years, stripping him of his football scholarship to the University of Southern California. After Banks was released from prison, Gibson sent him a Facebook message saying “Let’s let bygones be bygones.” Thinking the message was odd, Banks worked with a private investigator to set up a meeting with Gibson. It was during their meeting where she admitted, on hidden camera, that she lied about the rape.

With the help of California’s Innocence Project, a judge overturned Banks’ conviction on May 24, 2012.

Since then, Banks had been on a mission to play in the NFL. He tried out for a number of teams, but did not make the cut. However, NFL coaches told him to keep trying. He eventually spent some time with the Las Vegas Locos of the United Football League, until the Atlanta Falcons signed him this spring.

NGO OKAFOR IN NEW ELLE MAGAZINE ARTICLE: A BOD FOR SIN

Ngo Okafor in Elle MagazineBlack male model, Ngo Okafor has just been featured in Elle Magazine for living out one of his life’s many passions…FITNESS!! READ MORE

For five days straight, ELLE editor Justine Harman puts herself  at the mercy of professional fitness concierge service, SIN Workouts, to  experience the lifestyle of the rich and flawless.

Day 3: TKO with Ngo

After yesterday’s double workout I wake up not exactly in pain but feeling an  allover tightness, like I could already be one size smaller. (Is that even  possible?)

One of the things I mentioned in my initial consultation with my  fitness concierge, S.I.N.’s Vanessa Martin—the woman who is cheerfully leading  me into new circles of hell this week—is that I like to box. Growing up watching fights on TV with my dad,  a former welterweight fighter, I learned to love the rhythmic sounds of pad work  and the squeak of high tops on canvas.

And, as  I’ve found out through dozens of group classes at Gotham Gym in the West  Village, there’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of connecting a solid jab.  As it turns out, one of the benefits to having a Vanessa of my very own is that  she has unrivaled access to the best facilities in the city—including some, like Peak  Performance, that are usually only open to clients who buy pricey personal  training packages. “There’s no other training facility that even scratches  the surface of what Peak offers,” she says. “The staff is completely comprised  of career trainers—no actors looking for part time gigs to make money.” Plus,  Vanessa is friends with the manager. “I know she will personally take care of my  clients when I’m not there.” I’m beginning to get the hang of this V.I.P thing:  Basically, all I have to do is show up and sweat.

Peak, a 10,000 square foot loft space in Chelsea, looks exactly the way I imagine the Miami Heat’s training room would: spacious, full of high-tech machinery including vibrating Power Plate platforms and speed-enhancing Woodway Force treadmills. It’s also equipped with private bathrooms the size of my apartment. This time around, Vanessa will not be working out by my side, though she does meet me upon arrival to quickly introduce me to my trainer, Ngo, then vanishes behind mammoth steel elevator doors.

The hulking and handsome Ngo escorts me into a private studio, wraps my  hands, and asks me what kind of music I like. For the next hour, to the sounds  of Drake, Kanye, and Hova, we alternate between gym class calisthenics (squats,  lunges, push-ups, and burpies) and increasingly difficult boxing combinations.  At one point, when I think I’ve completely maxed out, Ngo makes me punch him  backwards, across the room and into a corner. The blood is ferociously pumping  in my ears and my shoulders are so tired I think they might collapse; but every  time I connect with his pads, a hint of a smile betrays Ngo’s steely stare. As  we stretch afterwards on parallel mats, I ask him about the Peak clientele. He  explains that it’s a mix of professional athletes, stay-at-home hotties, and  actors. As if on cue, Kyle MacLachlan strolls by in a baby-blue  bandana.

After a hot shower and another round of Malin + Goetz goodies (those guys have the specialty fitness  market on lock), I treat myself to lunch (a protein shake at Peak’s well-stocked  juice bar) and check my email. Like clockwork, a note from Vanessa pops up:  “How was Peak? Feeling good? See you tomorrow at Uplift Studios for the 9:30  a.m. class.” Here we go again.

WORKOUT GET HAPPY: EXERCISE CAN FIGHT OFF DEPRESSION

Ngo okafor Black male model abs

Ngo okafor Black male model abs

Break a sweat, beat the blues. Physical activity fights off depression, finds new research from Belgium.

In a study at Ghent University, the longer participants sat around doing nothing, the more their moods tended to become negative and self-judgmental. Why? Because during periods of rest, people spend more time thinking (and analyzing) themselves, which is a recipe for depression flare-ups, says study coauthor Igor Marchetti.

But exercise may fend off depression by balancing the transfer of hormones between the endocrine and nervous systems, Marchetti says. “Additionally, studies have found regular physical activity seems to improve self-esteem, self-confidence, and mood—all conditions that are protective factors for depression.”

And it doesn’t take much time to see the effects. In a study at the University of Texas, 28 percent of depressed people who worked out on a treadmill or stationary bike for 30 to 45 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week eliminated their symptoms. When another group exercised 2 to 3 times a week for just 20 to 30 minutes, 16 percent saw symptoms disappear.
